TA-DA! A Story!

Here is a story I've been working on for a while and I hope you like it. :)

~~~~
Once upon a time, there lived a sad man. No one knew exactly why he was sad, but the rumors were that he had lost someone very dear. A long time ago, He had gone and boarded up inside the old O’ Toole mansion. The very name sent shivers down the bravest child’s spine. The house looked like it had just stepped out of Halloween, with broken shutters and a graveyard in the back. It always seemed to have dark clouds behind it.
Children had dared each other to go to inside and grab something from the top floor. The thing was, after a while, the children would come out pale and cold, and they had a dark red stain on the back of their t-shirt. Their parents would look under the shirts and gasp.
The children were scarred with a clean stab mark in the same spot on every affected child. They would be completely different. Not by looks, necessarily, but by personality, by spirit; the happy child of yesterday was no more. It was like they were taken control of the ghost of melancholy. In more ways than one. They would go out in the dark of night and- and what? What did they do? No one knows.
Parents forbid the children to do anything that involved the old man’s house. Of course, children being children, think of forbidden things as a line, challenging them to cross it. So, no matter how many times they got in trouble, time and time again they would go inside.
One girl was spared the scar. But she remembers everything that happened, and this is her story, so I’ll leave it to her.
I'll put some more in eventully, but for now tell me what you think!
Chapter 14, part 2
~~~

Ophelia peered at the cottage behind her and looked up at the waters above.

If she went into the cottage she might find a clue to where she should look for the other Mer people, but if she went upwards, she might be able to explore and find them faster.

Ophelia decided to just head upwards and try to find Tracy, whom she had near forgotten. As she swam up, she thought about her name.

She knew that when she woke up in the cell, there was no memory of what her name could be. Then she found Tracy, and the mouse named her Raven, because of her shiny black hair. And now Selene had renamed her Ophelia because she had been her helper.

Would she keep getting renamed?

Ophelia reached the top of the chasm, and tried to pin-point a spot where she could sit and rest. There was several pointy objects in the distance. Maybe a village? The one Tracy mentioned? Ophelia decided to go with it and swim. Suddenly, she heard a hiss and felt something dig into her shoulders with searing pain.

“Well, well, well, what have we here?” a croaky voice said in her ear. Ophelia screamed. “An Altering, hmm?” Ophelia squeezed Selene’s scale tight within her hand and winced as the thing dug into her shoulders even deeper.

“You couldn’t stay on your side of the sea, now could you? Just had to come and spy on our little world?” The thing spun her around and Ophelia got a good look at the creature. Scaley and disgustingly covered in what looked and felt like green slime, this creature looked like human and like a fish. It's legs were finned, and it had a dragon-like tail. The face seemed like the thing used to be kind, but something contorted it into a crazed evil mindset. The eyes were near black and wide open. The hands that held Ophelia were webbed and light, paler green than the rest of its body.

“Who...” Ophelia managed to choke out. “Who are you? A-and what do you want?” She squeezed the scale harder.

“Do not ask questions, Altering.” It said with a calm coolness. “We must see how you fare after you lose your last breath of air.” It grinned at her. “You must call me Cetus, for I am a monster, am I not?” He put his head back and laughed. “You are my slave now.” He said when he looked back at her. Ophelia's eyes widened in fear. “You don't like being a prisoner to a monster? Perhaps you will learn not to trespass!” Cetus lashed one of his hands across Ophelia’s left cheek. Heat rose in her face, and she winced in pain. She couldn’t fully feel it though, because the acid was burning her lungs, and she was running out of air. Her head spun and her eyelids became extremely heavy. Cetus growled and chuckled at the same time. “This is evil, Altering. Have you not seen it? The time is coming where dark will cover the light.”

In that instant, Cetus pulled Ophelia toward the pointed objects in the distance at surprising speed. All Ophelia hoped was that Selene would show herself before she lost consciousness.

interesting... *shivers* Cool how you included Cetus from greek mythology to keep up with the Greek themed merfolk.
