((Romance is fine. I usually don't put much into my stories either, but it seems to fit in this one just fine. :) ))

Adri was lost in her thoughts, thinking about the journey that lay ahead. After seeing her silent for so long, Keegan pulled back to ride beside her.

"So, Adrainna, are you looking forward to seeing Scotland?"

"Hmm?" Adri looked up at him, startled, "Oh, right, Scotland." she blushed, "Yes, very much so. I've never been there, have you?"

"Once, I believe, but I was very young then." Keegan's blue eyes looked distant. "I hear you are quite good with a sword, Adrianna." He said, abrubtly changing the subject.

"Yes, I suppose so. Oh, and "Adri" is fine. No need to call me by my full name."

"Sure, Adri it is. Anyhow, would you be up for practice later?"

"Keegan!" Braeden called from the front of the line, motioned for him to come." Keegan dipped his head, his blond hair bouncing into his eyes. Sweeping it aside he said, "Well, we'll have to talk later. Farewell, Adri." He smiled as he rode up toward Braeden. Adri sighed.

"All right. Time to make camp." Braeden announced at midmorning as they came to the edge of a forest. "We'll set up inside the trees so we're hidden and start again at nightfall." After finding a sutable spot to rest, Adri handed out dried strips of meat and slices of bread. While she was untacking her horse, Keegan came over again.

"Please, let me help."

"No, no, that's fine Keegan, I'm not tired at all." she said, but yawned as she did.

"Please, Adri, go get some sleep."

"Thanks, Keegan." she smiled gratefully. See you in the morning. Well, evening, I guess."

"See you." he laughed.

Seven days later, Adri and the others were over Scotland's border. Braeden pulled his horse to a halt at dawn and dismounted. "A good week's work. We'll stop a little early today, get a long sleep, and make it to Cesan's village tomorrow."
Adri broke in here. "His castle is half a mile from the village, and we can stop at McGruver's tavern. We're traders, come to see if Cesan has extra grain, as there's a shortage in the south."
Damien spoke up. "Why go into town at all? We can stay in the woods just as well, and a lot more inconspicuously."
Braeden sighed and nodded to Adri. They had argued it out more than once, and Adri, as usual on matters of strategy, had been victorious every time. "Because we would be seen, would have to be seen. We may have to ask questions. We will have to watch Cesan, find out what his habits are. We won't be able to stay invisible, not if we're going to find anything useful. And if we're seen lurking around, someone will get suspicious. Cesan will be on his guard. Maybe a search, and we'll be lucky if we aren't caught. Our best chance is to be open, say 'Here we are! Nothing to be afraid of!' And if we have an identity, it'll be case closed. People with a label - traders from the south. No one will get inquisitive, because there's nothing to be inquisitive about." She wrinkled her nose. "And we'd best pretend we're married. There probably aren't two female traders in the whole of Scotland. One of you lucky ducks will get to stay single. We'll have to get three rooms this way, which will give us one for you, one for Brenna and me, and one for, well, any questionable activities we may have."
No one said anything, although there were a few sighs. Braeden took over again. "All right, let's get some sleep. Damien, first watch. Brenna, second. I'll take third. Keegan, get wood and water. Adri, you - as always - are cook." After trying to eat Brenna's cooking one evening and Damien's the next, Braeden had settled the role of camp cook on Adri, just as she had predicted. An hour later, sand was thrown on the fire, and everyone but Damien was asleep. He yawned, waiting for his watch to be over.

((If anyone ever had a week that just about killed them, I did this last week. And, by the looks of it, this next one won't be a whole lot better. Hence my delay.
Anywho, it's high time for the dragons to enter. Here are my ideas for getting them to join up with our luverly Assassins. a) Big argument - maybe between Damien and Brenna. Noise alerts the dragons, who are nearby or flying overhead, and all our luverly Assassins get themselves captured. b) Dragons are sneaking around and capture the Assassins. c) The old story of "they-find-an-injured-______-and-heal-it-and-it-helps-them-forever." d) The half-million things I haven't thought of. Help yourself to any of those, or continue the plotline and let me introduce our fiery friends.
Cheers,
lavendershy))

((Lol. My weeks have been killer lately. I understand :) As to the dragons, I think I'll go with b. So, forward march!))

Damien sighed heavily. It was nearly time for Brenna to take watch. I can't wait to get some sleep, he thought. He closed his eyes as he imagined the tavern they were headed to next. A real bed, a real mattress. Soon he was fast asleep.

* * * * *

Three large dragons flew overhead, cloaked by the evening's lengthening shadows. One, a small female, was a deep purple, darkening to black around her muzzle and wings. Black dagger-like spines crowned her head and ran down her tail. The others were both male. One was a dark emerald, darkening at his wings and spines. The other was a deep navy blue. All three had brilliant red-orange eyes that glowed like a burning ember. As they saw the assassins their eyes sparked and a low growl of anticipation rose in their throats.

"You know, Ron, sometimes it's not so bad. Yes, we have to hide behind rock like stinking rats, but every now and then. . . . You don't see younglings like this often. Not tough yet. And five of them. . . . What luck! Isn't often we get so many to ourselves."
"Think we can take them?" Go figure, Selena thought. The most intimidating of them all, dark-blue Torron, was the most timid.
Berril ((Bur-ILL)) laughed at him, a deep grumble that set the trees below trembling. "Take them? Take them? Take five miserable humans, who have never in their lives so much as given a whiff of fire, who have ears and noses as dull as boulders, who sleep at night, of all things? And you ask if we can take them? We should turn you out on your own, Torron. A rabbit is more like a dragon than you are." Selena chuckled with him, and Torron looked away in a huff. A dragon in a huff is not a pleasant thing, unless you are a fiercer dragon, and Selena and Berril did not mind much.
Most people wouldn't think that something as large as a dragon can be stealthy, but Torron, Berril, and Selena landed twenty feet away from the sleeping Damien, and he hardly twitched. Suddenly Selena whispered something in a his of flame. Berril leaned toward her. "What was that?"
"I said, listen and be quiet. More humans."
"She's right," murmured Torron. "We won't have time to kill them, eat, and get out."
"We could just take them with us to the caves," suggested Selena.
"Not if you make pets of them like the last ones," objected Berril.
"I won't, promise. Bring the gear, too. They may have something interresting."
Berril nodded, spurred to action by the sound of horses' hooves. "Torron and I will take two each. Selena, get the last and the gear. And we've not much time."

((One thing that I just realized: the humans can't be picked up in the dragon's mouths. A sneeze, and poof! Roasted. It'll have to be talons instead of the mouth.))

Adrainna woke with a scream as she felt tight, iron hard bars wrap around her body. Looming above her was a huge dark blue creature with glowing red eyes. A wisp of smoke drifted lazily out of one of its nostril, curling up into canopy of trees above. The bars, she realized, were the talons of the blue beast.

"Hello, youngling." His voice was deep, dark, and smooth. He was covered in scales except for his wings, which were were a soft blue, almost transparent, and probably thirty feet long. Keegan, wiggling and writhing, was held in the beast's other set of talons.

"You- You're a dragon!" Keegan shouted. Cries rang throughout the camp. Adri couldn't move, but, from the sound of it, the others were in the same situation.

"Let go!" With a gasp, she felt the ground drop out from under her as the dragon rocketed into the air.

"I couldn't let go of such a good meal. Sorry." She heard shouts below her. There must be people down there! They could rescue them!

"Help!" she screamed "Someone, help!"

"Now, now. The dragon said. "None of that. Lets get ourselves properly acquainted, shall we? I'm Torron. Me, my brother Berril, and my sister Selena happened to come upon your party while we were hunting. What's your name?"

((Ha ha. Spam-code-thingy says "Nero." Just like the villain in the new Star Trek! Actually, I think it's spelled n-i-r-o, but . . . RaNdOm!

Berril snapped at him, "I said no making pets! You're worse than Selena sometimes, 'Ron. Keep your mouth shut, will you?"

Air rushed past Adri's face, and her braid flapped awkwardly, hair slipping out of it. Keegan sneezed explosively when a few strands stuck to his face, and Adri almost laughed. But no, no, this was no time for losing her head. . . .

She wriggled a little until she could make eye contact with Keegan and see one of the other dragons. This one was purple . . . A purple dragon? That color didn't come into any of the stories Adri had heard. Green, blue, brown, maybe the occasional grey, but purple? She whispered to Keegan, asking him if he knew anything more than she did, but she underestimated the sharpness of dragon ears. Torron answered her instead of her friend. "Oh, yes, purple is very rare. Selena's no ordinary dragon. See, she doesn't have to breathe fire. She was blowing ice when she was hardly out of the egg, and she can do just about anything else, if it's not alive."

"Stone? She can breathe something like molten stone?" Keegan was curious.

"Not too molten, if you get my meaning. Can't be much hotter than fire, or it burns her tongue. But yes."

Berril roared again. "Shut up, Torron! Leave the prisoners alone! Food, not friends!" ((Yes, yes, Finding Nemo ripoff. :P)) The rest of the journey was silent.

Adri didn't really know what she had been expecting as the lair. A cave, probably. Maybe a forest clearing. She certainly hadn't pictured an ice gully. Sure, there were ice fields on the higher mountains, but who had ever heard of a dragon living in them? It was the perfect choice, though. No human could climb in or out. They were trapped.

The dragons knew it and dumped them all together while they clawed out the ice that had slipped into their hollows. Brenna whispered, "You almost have to feel sorry for them, don't you?"

Braeden glared at her. He was in a severly bad mood, having fought with Damien all the way over Damien's sleeping on the watch. "Sorry for them? Did the wind addle your brains?"

Adri broke in. "None of that, Braeden. Snapping isn't going to help us stay alive."

"I just mean that Lucifer will not be happy to have five of his trainee Assissins go missing. And Assassins won't miss three dragons who happen to live right by our route - I bet they have tabs on these ones already."

Braeden, still sour, muttered, "Well, they might have told us," but no one paid any attention to him, because Berril had stalked over.

"Lucifer? You five are of the Guild?"

Braeden growled, "You got that right, lizard boy. And the Guild isn't going to be very happy with you."

Adri winced, waiting for Berril to toast Braeden with a single sigh. But instead he stalked away toward the other dragons and began to hold a low conversation with them. "I'll bet a gold piece they've run into Assassins before and it was not a pleasant thing." No one seemed willing to dispute that.

Sorry! I've had a series of friend issues and fight and such a lot in the past few weeks, due to people being petty and immature and not liking some people and not inviting some people and people seeing a group without them and moms yelling at people and people not going to summer camp because of people (and I found out today that one of my friends is moving, and I don't even know if she knows, but my mom does because they (my mom and her's) work together) and- Well, it's a really long story, but I've been pretty upset and distracted lately. Anyway, I can't wait to get started!!! :D

* * * * *

Berril approached the group cautiously.

"Where are you going? Who is your, er, you know, target?" The dragon looked warily at Braeden.

"Why is it any of your business?" Braeden snapped. Adri glared at him.

"We're heading to Lord Cesan's manor. He's our target." Berril cleared his throat as Adri finished.

"Well, if you can arrange for Lucifer and his men to leave us alone for a while, we'd be willing to give you a ride. Cesan is no friend of ours, anyway. He takes up far to much of the local wildlife, which we have to live on when we can't find better food." He glanced at the group and licked his lips, but quickly looked away, "So, what would you like?"

I'm terribly sorry about all the drama you've had. Yuck. :P And our wireless is down, so I can't work from my laptop anymore for a bit, hence the delay.

*******

Braeden opened his mouth to snap something nasty again, but Adri elbowed him in the stomach and nodded at Berril. "Give us a moment, will you? We need to have ourselves a little confab." The dragon nodded - I could have sworn that was a bow, Adri thought - and turned away. Braeden looked like he was going to snap Adri's head off, but she stared him down. "When was that last time a dragon asked you - politely, too - what you want him to do? Use your head and don't push our luck. We have a ride, Braeden, a fast ride, and the dragons have a grudge to pay off. Win-win situation. What more do you want?"

"An ally whose diet doesn't consist mainly of humans."

Damien, on the sidelines with the others, muttered, "He has a point, you know. . . ."

Brenna broke in. "Look, we have to trust them to some degree - we can't even get out of the gully alone. So you can't just turn your back on them. They have to help us out of here, if nowhere else."

Growling, Braeden subsided. Keegan shook his head. "I don't like it any more than you do, but they're right. You want to try to climb out of here? Go ahead. I'm with you, Adri, I guess."
