Labyrinth Tunnels End?

Chatterbox:

Labyrinth Tunnels End?

Labyrinth Tunnels End?

If you're new here, start at the first labyrinth post. All the labyrinth posts live on the Power of Claw page.

Four of us stand at the four corners of the chamber. We count down, 1, 2, 3, and click our combination locks into place at the same time:

C-R-Y.

L-I-N-E.

J-U-P-I-T-E-R.

Z-E-N-I-T-H.

The door rumbles and then shifts a little bit inward, giving way. We've solved the last riddles! We've finally earned whatever is behind this heavy wooden door. I'm standing right in front of it, and I push, putting the whole weight of my body into it—and the door gives way...

...to an empty room with no exit? Everyone stands in the doorway, looking blankly around at the room. Have we just traveled three weeks, solving puzzle after puzzle, for this? I mean, it's a beautiful chamber, with a little bit of sunlight trickling down. It could use a little less drill noise—the drills just won't let up. But otherwise, I could imagine camping here quite happily, I guess?

The old badger seems to be the only one excited about this development. He trots past me, dumping the rest of his green stones into his mouth and swallowing. "THE FINAL ROOM! THE BARK! THE LETTERS ON THE BARK!"

He snatches it away from me, crosses off four more letters, and hands it back.

I look down at it. Seventeen letters are crossed off. Eleven letters remain. Uhh...

"Don't you see?" the old badger says, pointing at the bark.

"No," I say, "and while we're talking about confusing things, how come you can suddenly talk?"

"Those Vailiria stones, the little green ones, they're the only things that restore my power of speech. Each stone only gives me one minute of speech. I've been saving them for this last chamber, so I couldn't be much help to you earlier. I just swallowed the last of them, so we should be able to talk for another...fifteen minutes at best."

"How did you lose your power of speech?" Silverpaw chimes in.

"It was taken from me by a...powerful...creature long ago, when I was the Guardian of the Power of Claw."

We look around at each other. Of course! We had wondered about this, but it didn't seem possible for a retired Guardian to outlive his successor. But I suppose the most recent Guardian died so young, and this badger was very, very old...

"So...is this where the Power of Claw was originally kept?"

"Of course. This was the Claw Outpost, built around the same time as all the other outposts. Except I was much more ambitious than your average guardian. I wasn't satisfied with building a crummy little shack on top of a mountain or something. I wanted a truly secure Outpost."

"You built this?" I asked.

"Well, I had help. This was back when humans and animals had treaties and alliances. You might've read about those times in your Sprocketville textbooks, unless B.I.G. has started censoring them. It actually brought a tear to my dry old badger eye when I saw you with Little Crow for the first time—it's not often that you see animals and humans working together anymore." He sighs.

I'm touched but unsure how to respond. Like an idiot, I bite my lip.

"Anyway, I got human engineers, beavers, moles, and all sorts of diggers and builders to help me build these tunnels and their gates and doors and locks. The animals didn't need much convincing. The humans did. I told them we'd use the area as a bunker in case of war or natural disaster. No matter what treaties we had signed, a human couldn't know about the Powers. But of course that's gone out the proverbial window now."

"I can't believe you built all this..."

"Believe it! Well, I didn't engineer those locks, and I didn't carve those riddles. That's why I couldn't help you with them. They were done by a human—a prodigy named Martin Sheepshank. He was only twelve at the time, and he was already light years ahead of the other humans. He could actually speak to the animals, you know, long before anyone else could."

"Martin Sheepshank? Do you mean Dr. Sheepshank?"

"Ha! I'd be shocked if he hadn't earned a PhD by now."

"I studied under him at a place called Cypher Labs! And if you're saying he could talk to animals all those years ago, he must've invented the Cyph..."

"You're distracting yourself from the point, Charlene! You're distracting EVERYONE!"

"It's Charlie."

"I'm sorry, my throat is getting a bit *cough* rusty. Now look at the letters that remain—the nine letters that remain."

"No, silly, there are eleven letters left," Little Crow says, fluttering onto my shoulder.

"Little Crow?! You're back! Where did you..."

"NO TIME FOR THE BIRD!" the old badger interrupted. "The BARK. The nine letters—nine unique letters, two repeated. Seventeen have left. Nine remain. *cough* *cough* The LETTERS!"

I don't really appreciate this badger's tone, but I was taught to respect my elders, so I just nod and look back at the bark. Everyone else crowds around, puzzling. Little Crow feels heavier on my shoulder. He must be eating well. He also smells a little funny, and not like a damp cave...

"Can you give us a hint, old badger?" Silverpaw ventures.

"I don't have much spee let," the old badger says, looking frustrated. "Peech lef. *cough* Speek laft."

"I hear what you're saying, badger. Don't worry. We've figured out all the puzzles to this point...we can figure out whatever this means..."

I didn't put an overwhelming amount of confidence behind those words. But since I got everyone into this mess, well, since Little Crow and I got everyone into this mess, I figure it's our responsibility to get everyone out.

Now, what could these eleven, er, nine letters mean?

...I can't read that. My charrie isn't even with all of you...

Random personal fact: I keep hearing music through the walls, really nice music. I think it's coming from my brother's room.

umumumumumu.....

oh! Idea!

i know i am no longer here....i think im in FaFa? But lets just say...

Something in the air squacked. Claaws looked up from sadly grooming her aprintances' fur to see a bat gliding over to her. It was one of the, um, oh yes, Alexander's bats. He landed on Claaws' sholder, painting. "What is it?" Eli struggled under Claaws' masive paw, the black and white fur togeather reminding Claaws of yin and yang. Yin and yang....more like Lunee and Claaws. Without one of them the world would be chaos.  They each balance eachother out. Without one another the world would unbalance and fall. Claaws couldnt even admit it her herself...she missed Lunee. And Ayearth and Sylvia. But most of all Lunee. As younge Powers they were close. Then the war happened and they grew far apart. And as they grew far apart the war worsened. Untill finally it was the death of all of them.

"The...the Labyrinth Tunnles team...they made it past the final lock."

Without that sideafected power killing them all? Well im serprised. Claaws mused quietly. "What has this got to do with me? Are there more possesed ones to imprison?"

"n-no." The bat stampered. "They need help on a riddle..." The bat told Claaws all about the riddle the badger had hiven them. And the green stones.

"Why doent to get him more?" Claaws asked.

"i...there is no more..." The bat shuffled its wings. Claaws sighed internally. Of course things had to go wronge at the last moment. Because thats what always happenes.

"Wait..." She had an idea. "What if those six tunnles..."

"Nine," the bat interupted. Claaws glared at him and the bat shied away. "Sorry, sorry." It whimpered.

"As i was saying, what if those numbers are tunnles? The nine numbers are nine lost tunnles? Maybe they could lead somewhere? Like...maybe...a clue to...to the Angle Wolf...?" Claaws dared to hope.

"no." The bat sqaucked. "It spells something. We dont know what."

Claaws twitched her tail. "Are you shure? There is no mentioned lock key."

The bat thought for a moment. "You are right."

"so maybe there is a small passageway in those tunnles. And maybe that small passageway leads to a clue. Or...maybe another Power." the crow gasped. "Now, what were tou really here for?"

the crow shuffled his wings. "I came to ask the animals at FaFa for more help. With solving this." Then he brightened. "And you did give a pretty stable theory. I will go tell the others. And Charlie. And Silverpaw."

Claaws laughed harshly. The bat stummbled off her shoulder and onto the ground. "you, you know i was there. I heard what they said. The...Power of Darkness?"

Claaws froze. "What about it?"

the crow shuffled his fleshy wings. Like those of a dragon. "Its, been an honor. Talking to you without you killing me." He bowed shepishly and took off back to the tunnles.

who else had heard?

Heard what Eico had said?

Claaws shook out her tail, and Eli spraing up to her paws, catching Claaws offgaurd. "I have found tour weekness, mother. I will make them hate you."

The fox opened her nouth wider to yell to the hidden animals of FaFa, and Claaws knocked her to the ground, knocking the air away also. "Why...stupid fox...needs air...."

Claaws clamped her paw across Eli's mouth. The jaws bit down but she could hardly notice it. She was thinking about the old Eli. Her fiesty little fox. Suddenly the fox went limp under her. Claaws' heart beat faster. How hard was she pushing on the poor thing? She slowly brung her paw away from Eil's mouth. The fox did nothing. Finally she coughed and sat up straight. "Cl-Claaws? Im sorry. I didnt mean-its a dragon-"

"Oh, Eli." Claaws wrapped her tail across Eli's back. "Dont worry. You will always be my aprintance. My Elyuna Fur. We will find this dragon and stop her. You will be back soon enough."

"really?" But before Claaws could answer Eli doubled over, scratching her head. She keft long gashes just under her ears. Her white fur got caught in her silver claws, some fluttering down to lay at her back paws. "You will never get her back, mother. There is no way to deafeat me. I am Jaaws. I am the Sideaffect Power of Darkness." Then Eli doubled back over, in a deep sleep.

Claaws hoped she was right about the tunnles. About the tunnles leading to another clue. Clue to the answer to defeat Jaaws.

The ninth page in Myths and Legends.....

Trill studied the page. Why was the badger being weird again?

Trill studied it better, her eyes lit up. "The Giant Ground Sloth?"

Before the badger could respond, purple fire spiked the room once again. Trill thought everyone ducked in time, but a horrendous wolf howl racked the cavern.

"Meela!!!" Charla's voice cried. The fire died away. Trill ran to the wolf's side. Charla was bent over her sister, who was not moving on the ground. Trill held her breath. Looking around the cavern, she spotted a spring. She picked up some water and threw it gently on Meela's face.

Charla was shaking as Meela stirred slightly. Everyone pressed in, holding their breath.

Meela opened her eyes, and everyone sighed in relief. But Charla shook her head.

"Something is wrong." She said. Trill widened her eyes in disbelief.

"I know my sister!" Charla shot back. Trill backed up slightly.

Sure enough, as Meela sat up, she cried. "Who turned out the lights?!?"

Her eyes were focused on a point ahead of them, even though she was talking to them.

Charla and Trill looked at each other.

Meela was blind.

Jaaws~

Deep violet flames arc from my mouth, scattering into a cloud of sinister flame at the floor of the cavern. Killing people just for fun is not what I do. But stirring emotions is.

From the roof of the cavern, I have caused disarray among the travelers. I'm doing this to allow BIG easier access here, assuming they actually make it down. They're digging at an antagonizingly slow speed. Perhaps I should help them? No, I'll let them toil for a little longer.

Now to think about the past events. The mouse had had traces of the stone I once gave to Catastrophe. The stone was made of melted obsidian; a heap of liquid trapped in a solid state forever. I had given it to Catastrophe while doing buisness with him one day. A harmless toy, it had the power to displace memories and add new ones. It was just a small little creation to cause confusion in the camps of the opposing army, but I see that Catastrophe has used it since awakening. Or perhaps there's something I don't know about that stone. Hmm. I need to find Catastrophe. For more reasons than one. I'm done blowing fire around this cave, anyway.

I dive from the top of the cavern and swoop for the floor. Turning at the last moment from sandstone impact, I shoot down the tunnel and head for the entrance to the labrynth itself.

"HAIDES!" I screech. My servant has a job to do.

Thimble~

"Scarlet! Scarlet!" I squeak, searching for my awesome partner. "Oh, there you are."

I sigh with releif; Jaaws hasn't gotten her yet. She's looking at the badger pointing violently at some paper. "Thimble! What is it?"

I'm about to open my mouth when a terrible scream bounces off the walls. A wolf's scream.

"MEELA!" Charla cries. Scarlet and I rush over to see what's wrong. A sinking feeling stirs in my stomach. Had the fire finally gotten someone?

Meela stirs slightly, coming to only when Trill splashes her face with water. As soon as she opens her eyes, I notice something. I saw it all the time back when I was trapped in the labratory at BIG. Her eyes showed no focus; many rodents returned from experimentation with that look in her eyes. My dread was confirmed when Charla whispers in horror, "Meela is blind."

----------

Meela is resting on a cool slab of stone now. Watching her from a distance, I turn back to Scarlet once again. "Scarlet, I think the code is Megatherium. The scientific name for the giant ground sloth!"

A breeze stirs the cavern suddenly, and the entire troop sighs. I think Jaaws has left.

"Did you feel that?" Scarlet asks. She looks much better already.

"Yeah," I answer. I think Jaaws has left. That's good."

"So, Megatherium? I bet that's right!"

"Cool! Let's go tell Charlie!" I scurry off to find Charlie, Scarlet flapping behind.
