I paused, one

I paused, one

I paused, one paw raised, and sniffed the air. Strange scents drifted into my nostrils, some harsh and metallic; others sickeningly sweet. My windswept pelt gleamed a dazzling silver in the pale light of the moon. Dew sparkled softly in the tangled web of grass, and I closed my eyes, listening. I was close to B.I.G.'s headquaters atop the Peak, spying for F.A.F.A. I breathed deeply, feeling the tingling sensation of shifting into a smaller form. My wolfish frame shrunk, my sliver furs compacting and cascading over my new foxlike body. My tail lengthened and bushed out, my muzzle narrowing and pupils becoming more cat-like. I shivered slightly, the warmth and comfort of my wolf furs gone, the wind whistling sharply around my ears and penetrating my skin until I was chilled to the bone. The headquaters of B.I.G., giant labratories that were tall, dark, and imposing. I shuddered, thinking about the bad things that happened to animals in the bowels of this beastly building. I set off at a brisk pace, moving in the shadows and staying near the treeline. Guards patrolled the entrances and walked atop the walls, eyes sharp and alert. Movement a the edge of the treeline caught my eye. A songbird hopped along the edge of the bushes, pretending to eat the berries of a bush but keeping one eye trained on B.I.G. He flitted futher out into the open, and my blood curdled in my chest. What is he doing?! I was frozen, rooted to the spot. I could not breathe, I could not utter a sound. My heart stilled in my chest as the little bird hopped right next to a guard, mere feet from his polished boots. The guard was looking in the other direction and hadn't noticed the bird yet. I screamed inwardly as his head began to turn and broke cover, sprinting toward the helpless bird, my legs stretching out to their full length beneath me. My blood roared in my ears, and I panted as I drew ever closer. There was a shout and something went thunk. A tranquilizer dart imbedded itself into my silver pelt, my mind barely registering the pain. I collapsed, sending a desperate mind-message to my confidant before darkness began to cross my vision. The last thing I saw was the seemingly helpess songbird, a smug grin contorting his features.
