Hal,

Please find enclosed a piece of  paper that was recovered a few days ago by a Resistance operative. It appears to be some kind of journal entry, and the handwriting matches Catastrophe's. It mentions something about a "Locked Door" and an energy crystal - my best guess is that the "Locked Door" is the code name for the project on Bleak Peak. The mention of magicians summoning lightning matches with the frequent thunderstorms seen around the peak. No idea what the crystal is, or if this has to do with any of the Army's maneuvers around the Decoy Forest. File it with the others.

All best,

Lamont

Fifteenth attempt to open the "Locked Door". Started as usual - magicians summoned lightning storm, lightning struck - the door was unlocked for a second, then closed again. Magicians said that crystal may be drained of energy - harvest another?

Hal,

Another journal entry from Bleak Peak. The handwriting is the same as last time. I have no clue what he's talking about. You know the drill.

All best,

Lamont

Nineteenth attempt to open the "Locked Door". Again the door was unlocked for a moment, but this time someone escaped - a man, quite old, with a dirty brown cloak and a twisted old cane. Troops were sent to find and dispose of the escaped man, but they came back empty-handed. I'm putting out a warrant for his capture - if he talks, the plan may well be ruined. Had a meeting with Yearwood. The origin of the energy crystal appears to be quarries far to the west that are operated by moles - when they saw our operative, they threw stone and rock. Maybe take the place by force? Still unsure as to how the crystal will be transported.

Hal,

Here is Report 655-18-3, concerning the mysterious void near the Decoy Forest. We're going to try again with another agent tomorrow, but Quintin wouldn't leave until I promised him you would make copies and send them to all Resistance agents, and you know how Quintin gets when he's cross.

All best,

Lamont

Report 655-18-3

as told by Quintin (the snake) to Lamont (the badger)

After traveling all morning, I arrived at the mysterious sinkhole. There was already a crowd and several stalls selling food. I slithered to the edge of the abyss. It was about a hundred feet in diameter. The bottom could not be seen. I saw a young girl throw a stone into the sinkhole. It never hit the bottom - or, if it did, it was so quiet I could not hear it. I asked one of the stall owners what had happened. A transcript of my conversation is printed below.

Me: Were you here when this sinkhole appeared?

Stall Owner: No.

Me: You there in the blue dress, were you here?

Woman Waiting in Line: No, and move! You've cut in line!

Me: You?

Man, Also Waiting in Line: Nope! Now scram, or I'll knock you into the Grasplands!

Me: Now, threats are hardly necessary. I am a special opera-

Little Boy: Argh! A talking snake! Get it! Kill it!

(There are sounds of a scuffle and mumbled profanities. The recording stops here.)

I returned late that night, battered, weary, but unbeaten, knowing I had lived to die another day.

Signed

Quintin (the snake)

and

Hal,

Here's Report 655-18-3 (attempt #2). Make sure it's on the desk of every agent by tomorrow.

All best,

Lamont

Report 655-18-3

Written by Fiona (the fox)

I arrived at dawn this morning, hoping to beat the crowds. The area has been closed off with soldiers from Catastrophe's Army guarding it. I couldn't get a close look at the mysterious sinkhole, but I can tell you the following things. You can't see the bottom of the sinkhole, but the shadows aren't quite black - more like a very dark blue. There was a strange kind of silent rushing noise that seemed to be coming from the sinkhole - the soldiers had to raise their voices to hear each other. One of the soldiers talked into a walkie-talkie. I heard something about "dangerous consequences" and "trying to warn him". I had to leave when the soldiers saw me.

WHAT WE KNOW:

There is a sinkhole near the Decoy Forest.

Catastrophe's Army is now heavily guarding the area.

WHAT WE DON'T KNOW:

WHY to either of the above.

If this has anything to do with the Bleak Peak experiments.
