Video Games

This thread is all about video games. Here are some games that everyone on the CB should totally play.

There is an excellent indie gamemaker called thatgamecompany. Yes, not any sort of typo. It is called, lowercase letters and all, thatgamecompany. They make the most beautiful video games I've ever seen, and focus on provoking emotional responses in the player rather than game mechanics. One is called Flower. In the game, you're the wind, and it's your job to breathe life into the world by collecting flower petals.

In another of their games, Journey, you play a figure walking through the desert who looks like he or she is made of cloth. That game also looks really beautiful.

There's another video game called Katamari Damacy which was a great hit and spawned many sequels. I've just played the second in the series, We Love Katamari. In the games, the King of All Cosmos destroys the stars by accident and send his son, the Prince, to Earth so he can roll up stuff on Earth into clumpy balls (katamaris) so he can turn them into stars and repair the sky.

In Katamari Forever, the King gets hit by a metor and loses his memory, so the RoboKing takes his place.

So those are a few games you guys should play. They may just shake the way you look at video games.

Has anyone been to a video game exhibit? I went to one called The Art of Video Games at the Smithsonian, which, among others, featured Flower, and it was a great exhibit. The Museum of Modern Art has 14 video games (one of which is Katamari Damacy) displayed in their Applied Design exhibition, which is going on until January 20, 2014. I hope to see that exhibit.

Does anyone else play video games? If you don't you really should. They are an excellent art form and can be used to express a wide range of subjects and ideas. I might take a game design class sometime this fall.

Anyone up to talk about games a little further?

I have two favorite game series:

Pokemon- Who doesn't love the Pokemon games? The new ones look awful, but Pokemon Black and White was amazing. I even wrote a fanfiction about it.

Professor Layton- This is a series of puzzle games. In terms of plotline, the first one is good, the second one is better, the third one is epic (beside the love square concept, as opposed to a love triangle), and the rest slowly decline in plotline. But they still all have great puzzles!

I play assorted other games, but these two are definitely the best.

@Joe

Yeah, that's my primary way of playing video games.  It's seemed to work well this far.

I also need to play Portal.  It seems so fun.

Lastly, if you wait until the PS4 comes out, PS3 prices should fall because it's now the less-fancy version.
