Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

It's always raining somewhere.

Tears prickle at the words.

They know it's true.

What about all those lost

Half-way 'cross the globe?

What of those disappeared

Lost in time and space?

What about those smiles

Plastered over tired tearstains?

What of the raindrops,

Innocent as can be,

Blamed for the world's

Sadness and catastrophes;

"Huh? Why are you carrying an umbrella?

It's not raining here..."

Aren't you the one who told me?

It's always raining somewhere.

Okay, so this round was really hard to judge. Everyone's poems were so good! I'm serious! And I'm not just saying that to be nice, it's true! I read these poems so many times, because I couldn't decide how to judge them!

But, without further ado, here are the results:

Third place: Jaybells – I love the way you depict rain in your poem, especially the lines 'What of the raindrops,/Innocent as can be,/Blamed for the world's/Sadness and catastrophes;'. The ending to your poem – '"Huh? Why are you carrying an umbrella?/It's not raining here..."/Aren't you the one who told me?/It's always raining somewhere.' - really struck me hardI love how it takes from the first line of the poem, but also seems to be given new meaning after reading the poem through. Amazing Poem!

Second place: Wreeboo – I loved your word choice in your poem, I think it captures rain very well, especially the lines “Rain, in its gray and/Slightly ethereal state”I also love the imagery in lines like “Streetlights casting their/Dusty, comforting glow.” and “When the rain begins/Its trickling path down/My window”. And, this is just a small thing, but I really liked the way you broke up the lines. Great poem!

First place: Periwinkle – I like the way you interpreted the theme, especially how you integrate rain into the story you were telling. I also loved the way you conveyed the speaker's emotion in your poem, especially All I wanted was a chance to say my goodbyes/but the rain washed them all away”. I think the way you paced the poem was also very well done, and I really loved the ending linesThe sun is always shining somewhere,/but that means it's raining somewhere, too.” It was really incredible, and made such an impact on me.Amazing poem!

Honestly, this round could have been judged in other ways too. I seriously think each of these poems were amazing, and I truly loved reading them.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!! Thank you sososososososo much! I've always felt a little insecure about my poetry, so this really, really meant a lot.

Anway, the next theme shall be... Colors! Can't wait to see the poems you write from that!

blazing azure seeping through the sky

golden threads of braided sunlight

periwinkle lacing the air in a sweeping breeze

cream clouds drifting softly

(the air is unmoving, cold, you wish for the sun again and again)

fractured emeralds of your eyes

gently curling fucshia for your smile

bubbling yellow echoing your laughter

scarlet, the weight of your hand in mine

(no, scarlet is for your screamed words, your anger through tears)

swirling shades, blending and curving lines

(rigid, hard angles)

every vibrant shade singing to me, to us

(curtains of grey fall around me)

a kalidescope, your gaze is the lens

(your gaze leaving mine)

you and I

(where are you?)

hmm. can't decide if i hate it or not... eh, i'll just post it :P

I've always envied those who could see colours.

The world must look so vibrant to you.

It must be filled with glory and wonder,

All just because of a few receptive pads in your eyes;

Because of those you get to see

Everything in life so differently.

I once thought that I'd grasped colour,

When I saw your smile and passion.

Those wonderous, beautiful things.

I was finally to be free of a life lived in greys upon greys.

But now I quite believe that I was just mistaken.

And even now when I hear people admire their colours

I still feel a spark of something black and heavy

And turn back to my plain graphite drawings.

To color a story

Dreams are a haze of purple -

periwinkle, perhaps,

or maybe something deeper.

Indigo, yes, I like that.

A haze of indigo dreams.

Dreaminess, perhaps.

A haze of indigo dreaminess.

Love is pink, of course,

but not the deep pink of a beating heart.

More a light,

baby pink,

that of cherry blossoms.

Cherry-blossom pink first love.

Betrayal is violent red,

fast and furious and sharp,

welling up in your heart

and behind your eyes.

A tangy red slice of betrayal.

Despair is white,

crisp,

and empty.

Or perhaps a light gray.

Or you could say it is darker,

muddier.

Despair washes out all colors,

leaving only a scale of gray.

A haze of indigo dreaminess,

with cherry-blossom pink first love.

Then a tangy red slice of betrayal,

until despair washes out all colors,

leaving only a scale of gray.

a combo of the things i love about myself and things i wish i was. title suggestions and feedback are always welcome! also, @Peri, what's the judging date?

untitled

red is bravery, loud and proud.

red is the color of brand-new bandannas and almost-ancient bricks and lipsticks i’d never wear

(not allowed, but that’s okay. i’d really never want that much attention called to me anyways)

it’s standing up in the face of whatever’s pushing you down and saying, no, shouting

i’ll always get back up.

orange is quiet courage.

orange is the color of new pennies and brandy roses and fires in fireplaces i’m too scared to light

(too dangerous, too hot. the heat is comforting but harsh, and even a candle could make the world burn)

it’s being brave enough to give your friend a hug and tell the world

who cares what you think of me?

yellow is the random acts of kindness that mean everything.

yellow is the color of fairy lights and freesia and evidence of other people’s pain

(often i feel guilty for my luck, and i’ve always been bad at using it to be kind- the words get stuck in my throat, and they never escape)

it’s helping someone you don’t know out and letting them know

you matter, and someone cares about you.

green is ecstasies and dreams and life.

green is the color of tealeaves and grass and long-gone houseplants who were never named

(life is bittersweet and i never really put the effort in before, maybe that’s why my plants always died)

it’s finding yourself and who you are and what you believe in and saying to yourself

you’ve got a lifetime ahead of you, and anything’s possible.

blue is bright, deep, poetic and wise.

blue is the color of the sky and the ocean and the hoodie i wear when i’m occasionally dropped off at school at 7:00 am

(i rather enjoy it- just me and my thoughts in a corner of the playground, no friends or distractions, and the cold air that seeps through is refreshing)

it’s thinking deep thoughts and telling everyone who needs to hear it

you can do this, and i believe in you.

purple is resilient strength, no matter how faded it gets.

purple is the color of overgrown lavender and the sky at sunrise and mountain majesties i’ve always wanted to see

(did you know i’d paint them over and over again, with probably too-watery watercolors when i was four)

it’s always being there when someone needs you, and making sure that the people who matter know

you can talk to me, about anything. always.

Okay! Before I announce the winners, I just want to say that everyone here wrote amazing poems. I hope you guys know that. Now, without further ado, let's all put our hands together for these awesome people!

Honorable Mention to...

WordSong! I loved your poem, it sounded like a writer writing a story or a song. The ending brought me through some sort of bittersweet story, and it was wonderful. The beginning was probably my favorite, because it used a lot of colors I like. I enjoyed the line “dreams are a haze of purple.” Thank you for this great poem!

Third place...

Jaybells! This was a wonderful poem! It was interesting, how the speaker could describe what it must be like to see colors despite the fact that they couldn’t themselves. I liked the lines “those wondrous, beautiful things./I was finally to be free of a life lived in greys upon greys.” It was sad in a good way. Thank you for sharing your poem!

Second place...

Luminescence! What an amazing way of bringing the reader through the rainbow in a voice that hasn’t spoken before. It was a mix of real life things you can see, like talking about things that are actually the colors you mentioned, and imaginary, synesthetic things, like “it’s being brave enough to give your friend a hug and tell the world/who cares what you think of me?” One of my favorite lines was “purple is the color overgrown lavender and the sky at sunrise and mountain majesties I’ve always wanted to see.” This was a wonderful poem, thanks for entering!

First place....

Silver Crystal! Wow, this was a very moving, well-written poem! For one thing, I love the description and the use of the colors. I also think that it’s nice how if you read the poem without the words in parentheses, it seems more upbeat and happy, but the parentheses reveal that life isn’t always as beautiful as we want. The use of that was powerful and well thought out. I like the lines “periwinkle lacing the air in a sweeping breeze/cream clouds drifting softly” and the line “fractured emeralds of your eyes.” Thank you and congrats!

Thanks to everyone who entered!

(May 24, 2021 - 3:41 pm)

Wow, thank you so much Peri!!!! I honestly wasn't sure about that one, I'm so glad you liked it! I've already judged a while ago, but so have Jay and Lumi, so I think I'm just going to judge the next round if that's okay with everyone!

The theme for the next round is fantasy, so a poem about anything fantasy related (dragons, princesses, castles, elves, etc) is perfect! Feel free to play with the prompt, and I don't mind if it seems like a stretch to fit the theme <3
