Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

Plaid

i. Everything has been piled onto

My shoulders

Words of hate, cruelty,

Oppression

Yet I do not bear it alone

ii. Dressed in plaid

Lost amid the storm

A yearning to be heard

From the highest palace towers

Something must be changed

iii. Unity and belonging

Camouflage in battle

Plaid

iv. We trailblaze on

A new frontier

Hold fast, don’t be blown

By the harsh, cold northern winds

Please hold on…

Don’t leave me—

Lost in the tumultuous

Sound of the storm

v. At last, we have found the

Land promised
It was said to have hills of gold

And rivers laden with silver

None of that was true

But what does that matter…?

As long as I’m here

With you

424

do you wear braces

just so I can see you smile

cuz I think I'd wear plaid for you;

don a dress

and go to a party

yeah, I'd sit in the corner for you 425

do you pity me?

I'd hate to think if you do,

but I guess our lines are intertwined now;

I think it's okay

if you pity me now

if you'll learn to love me later

did you hold my hand

just to make me smile

yeah, I think I'd wear plaid for you

and skip the party

cuz I don't see the point of a fancy dress suit 428

Hmm. Maybe some text will top better?

plaid~

once when we were hiking

a couple and their dog

met us on the trail

and said that my dad

looked like a mountain man

because he was wearing plaid

and could he help them please? they asked

since he must be so knowledgeable

I think

that if people looked at me like that

if people followed my every word

if people had so much assurity in everything I said

I think I would wear plaid

every day

if not just to have a bit of confidence

sidenote: "assurity" was just a random word I made up that sounded good but it might be an actual word too?? Idk <-- low self-confidence. Can be solved by wearing plaid apparently.

no but seriously that actually happened my whole family was trying not to laugh the couple seemed so sure in my dad's expertise lol

PLAID.

in america,

the uniform

of the pioneers

carving out

a new land.

in scotland,

the dress

of a culture

oppressed

by monarchs.

plaid, like plain

i chose to

wear plaid

to my first day

of school

don't stick out

i thought.

plaid, like jade

the new girl

with the round glasses

was pretty

like jade

in her plaid.

plaid, like lemonade

thought

it'd be sour

but turned

to be sweet

attention flocked

to me

like birds

of a feather.

plaid, like played

as i realized

she was

the queen

and i

no more

than a worker.

plaid, like evade

as i tried

to be

the quiet nerd

again

to no avail.

the lemonade

turns sour

again.

plaid, like a raid

angry and furious

my spot, not hers

how

can i reclaim

my glory?

plaid, like jaded         plaid, like jaded

too tired    too tired

to do all this  to care about

"popularity"   "popularity"

i just  i just

fade away   give up

again.    again.

plaid, which i   plaid, which i

stopped wearing  started wearing

maybe i  maybe i

could be  could be

the quiet girl  on my throne

again   again.

i'm hoping the formatting still stays the same ;'(

The Red Striped Flannel

(based on "The Red Wheel Barrow" by William C. Williams)

so much depends

upon

a red striped

flannel

hugging a scared

boy

through his tattered

storm.

the world cannot

touch

fabric quite so

loving

holding in its

folds

a blossoming

soul.

*dissolves into tears*

this is so so so so beautiful. the way the lines are broken up is really effective, and the simplicity of the poem makes it hit home harder. it's like you just took the idea of love and protection and something else i can't even define, and presented it to the reader through words - your words don't create distraction or misunderstanding, just pure meaning.  which is very hard to do :/ anyway, i love this poem and i'm so glad you posted it <3

thank you so much! Usually I prefer to write detailed poems with long lines, but the Red Wheelbarrow just hits so hard I figured I'd try to do the same. so I'm glad it resonated with you!

Overlapping

These are the lines of my life

Sadness

Happiness

Overlapping

No one understands when I say it

How the sadness seeps in

It crosses off the other lines

I can't get rid of it

But I can add more

The more I add

The more Happiness

The more Saddness

They start Overlapping

The more the two become mixed together

The more days there are when I can't tell them apart

The days the lines seem to be against me

A thousand different feelings

That everyone else say are just one

Everything is mixed together

Your feelings are new

Every

Single

Day

Happiness

Sadness

Overlapping

Mixed together

Trying to tell them apart

Flannel Jacket

I used to know this boy

He had a flannel jacket and I’ve always liked plaid

And so I envied him

But his jacket couldn’t keep him warm

And his words were sharp and quick and mean

So I don’t sit with him at lunch nowadays

And I don’t know him anymore

I used to know this girl

She had a flannel jacket and I’ve always liked plaid

And so I envied her

But despite the jacket, inside she was cold

And everything she said was made of ice

So I don’t do group projects with her nowadays

And I don’t know her anymore

One day it rained

And I went to the store

I bought a flannel jacket because I’ve always liked plaid

I did not let the cold world make me cold

I kept my words warm and soft as often as I could

And I don’t bother with people who will hurt me nowadays

I’ve got my own flannel jacket
