The Poetry Challenge!

The Poetry Challenge!

Welcome, wonderful poets of the CB! With Bluebirds Regular Poetry thread, and Booksy's Poetry Contest, I was just thinking how much I like to click on those threads and just read through everyone's poetry that I haven't seen yet. But sometimes there is no new poetry to read, which is depressing. Thus The Poetry Challenge was born.

I'm sure you're all dying to know what this Poetry Challenge is. Hang in there a second, I'm getting to that. The basic idea of this is that we exercise our poem writing muscles, practice, improve, and at the end we have a beautiful Poetry Gallery to scroll through. It's a bit of a game, a bit of a prompt, and a bit of a competition all in one.

The rules are simple. We will write as much poetry as we can in the course of one week, and post it here. One poem a day for a week, although you can do more if you feel inspired. I will start by posting a theme, a prompt, or a technique, or any combination of those, and the rest of you will have to write a poem that corresponds with those things each day of the week. Then we can all vote for the most inspiring poem, and that person will become the next 'announcer'. The fun part is, the announcer can play too! Feel free to illustrate your poems and post those, too!

GUIDLINES:

No voting for yourself.

Please don't choose a category just because it's one you'd like (although don't choose a category you don't like either).

You can drop out at any time.

Be kind and respectful (obviously).

The categories must be pretty wide ranged since so many poems will be written from them.

Have fun!

~

To start off the first round, the theme is.............

SUMMER!

Whether you write about the beach, the pool, or the hot sun, summer is here and in full fling!

The optional prompt is: Warlike Arts (This is completely random. Jeopardy is on the Tv and I saw those two words and typed them down on the spot).

Nugget says gven. Given? I've given the gift of this wonderful Poetry Challenge to the world.

Wow, gosh, I feel so honored! I'm sorry for not checking up on this for awhile! Congrats to Bluebird, Ruby, Epic Fangirl, Leeli, Kitten; your poems were all amazing!

I'll post the new theme and dates in a minute!

Alrighty, for the next round of the poetry challenge. . . the theme is. . . DUN DUN DUN. . . empty! Whether you choose to write about the feeling, do an acrostic with the word, play with puctuation to make a literal hole in your poem, the choice is up to you!

The optional prompt is. . . . again, or more aptly, the prefix "re"  which means again and again. . . or withdrawl, or to move in a backwards motion. . .

And because I love making prompts so much (also because a week is kind of a long time). . .

The other optional prompt is. . . words with the suffix "fall", which I don't think is a real suffix but shhh. . . think rainfall, skyfall, starfall. . . or make up one entirely!

And last but not least, I'd like to include a couple of techniques to try involving. . .

Punctuation!

Try {brackets} /parentheses/ :colons: ;semicolons; [these other things that I don't know the name of] and others!

We'll go from August 4-11 if that's alright with everyone

I think that's it! I can't wait to see all of your poems!

YAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Does a happy dance* Finally!

I'm going to be posting a poems at least twice a week. Don't expect me to post more; I still have to build up confidence in my poetry-writing abilities. But I might post extras if I have inspiration because I love these themes so much! Hooray! Confetti!

Let's see....I'll write & post poems on Sunday and Thursday. And then, like I said, maybe extras.

Alright, here's mine! I think it fits best with the 're' Theme. I'm torn between the titles 'Rewind' and 'Take me Back'.

There are

365 days in a year

But you can't relive

A single one.

There are

7 days in a week

But they fly faster now.

There are

24 hours in a day

And they all seem to slip past

Without notice.

No matter how hard I try to

Backtrack

Rewind

I can't go back.

No matter how much I try to

Recreate

Retry

It won't be the same.

I don't need a time machine

To look behind me.

But I do need a

Rewind button

To take me back.

These are really awesome themes, September! I'm excited for this week!

So, here's my first poem for the theme 'empty'. It's kind of depressing...sorry. I guess it's kind of just about how frustrating artist's block (or any type of block) can be if it's pretty much all you do.

orange paint

"what they don't understand is that i don't

live to create, i create to live"

far beneath my skull bones is a

bathtub where i go to

think and

breathe and smell citrus from old

shampoo bottles

some days i float in

soapy water and

everything smells like clementines

but when it seeps through the

drain and the faucet starts

to rust i begin to go insane

how many tears do i have to cry to

fill up my bathtub

i'm here on this earth for one purpose

and that's to make art

i'm crazy if i'm not

improving and i'm afraid of a

tub that will never fill up

"i'm addicted to the pencil in

my hand and

the smell of

orange paint"

I wrote this yesterday and didn't get to post it:

Everyone feels it one time or another.

Many don't realize the

Poison

They're drinking as they feed

It.

Nothing can bring you back you

Ever wither while that

Sinking feeling

Stirs.

__________

In case you didn't get it, It's an acrostic. Nugget says yrbk. Yes, I am back, but I was never gone.

I'm back! Since I missed a couple days, I'll post the poems I wrote separately.

untitled:

you were my heartfall

my starfall, my skyfall,

my waves come crashing down on

us all,

you were my blackfall,

my margin call, my have all,

once upon a time we all

fall

~~~~~
Would love critique and title suggestions for this!
