The Poetry Challenge!

The Poetry Challenge!

Welcome, wonderful poets of the CB! With Bluebirds Regular Poetry thread, and Booksy's Poetry Contest, I was just thinking how much I like to click on those threads and just read through everyone's poetry that I haven't seen yet. But sometimes there is no new poetry to read, which is depressing. Thus The Poetry Challenge was born.

I'm sure you're all dying to know what this Poetry Challenge is. Hang in there a second, I'm getting to that. The basic idea of this is that we exercise our poem writing muscles, practice, improve, and at the end we have a beautiful Poetry Gallery to scroll through. It's a bit of a game, a bit of a prompt, and a bit of a competition all in one.

The rules are simple. We will write as much poetry as we can in the course of one week, and post it here. One poem a day for a week, although you can do more if you feel inspired. I will start by posting a theme, a prompt, or a technique, or any combination of those, and the rest of you will have to write a poem that corresponds with those things each day of the week. Then we can all vote for the most inspiring poem, and that person will become the next 'announcer'. The fun part is, the announcer can play too! Feel free to illustrate your poems and post those, too!

GUIDLINES:

No voting for yourself.

Please don't choose a category just because it's one you'd like (although don't choose a category you don't like either).

You can drop out at any time.

Be kind and respectful (obviously).

The categories must be pretty wide ranged since so many poems will be written from them.

Have fun!

~

To start off the first round, the theme is.............

SUMMER!

Whether you write about the beach, the pool, or the hot sun, summer is here and in full fling!

The optional prompt is: Warlike Arts (This is completely random. Jeopardy is on the Tv and I saw those two words and typed them down on the spot).

Nugget says gven. Given? I've given the gift of this wonderful Poetry Challenge to the world.

I wrote this yesterday. I'm thinking I might actually try to do a poem a day, it might help me exercise my "poet's muscles".

On-the-spot writing:

Too Many Rereads

I have one book

Only one

So I read it

And it is amazing

And then I reread it

Reread?

Reread!

Reread;

Reread:

Reread&what?

Reread/why?

There's just no point

After 6six rereads in a row

The book

Becomes

Empty

[                           ]

That

Is what the book

Feels like

To me

---

I might write a sequel to this tomorrow.

empty holes can't be filled

with concrete; soil erodes underneath

our feet, blowing dust away with memories

eventually we all forget; let's not

waste our minds once set in stone

we promise we'll never forget but

promises are empty,

I don't know if I should extend this. . . thoughts?

I think that would work great as a longer poem! But I love it as it is, too.

Also, thank you for the compliment on my poem! (I still haven't managed to write any more poetry haha. I don't know if I will be able to.)

Here's one for two days ago, inspired by this line from one of my old poems, /know that insignificance is our downfall/.

downfall

i have been told that my problems are

insignificant in the eyes of the universe, i

am a fleck of gold dust, a

remnant of the cosmos and the

aftermath of an explosion, one skeleton out of

seven billion, words drifting out into

space and forgotten over time

i am small, and i know that;

i will be gone,

the fates will cute my string

in my millisecond lifetime i will love what

is insignificant, i will not let the

wildflowers go unnoticed, not a single

starry night will pass me by

i am insignificant but this will not be my downfall

And for yesterday: I tried to follow the empty theme, I promise, but I got so sidetracked and wrote a really long poem. The full thing will be posted on the other poetry thread, here's just the first part, which kind of follows the theme, I guess...

characters

i. bound by electrical tape, century-old

ink in her veins, xylem turned

black like her dollar-store lipstick, she

is the absence of

color and every corroded tombstone

she tastes like metal and

spits out blood, she is the feeling of

an empty parking lots, an empty overpass,

an empty soul

CD shards in darkened alleyways

she will take a life before eighteen

This poem is for the punctuation theme.

Fine Print

Lottery

I spend $$ & $$ & $$ & $$ & $$

But still

My chance of winning is about

0.000000005%

But

Somehow

¿¿¿¿HOW????

I win

The information simply says

If your number is 8-9-17-8-9-17

You've won

But then

I see

(the fine print)

(To be paid out in 50 pieces of $500 each. Not including tax. May not count for people of certain races.)

What?

{reread{Not including people of certain races}reread}

I suppose I won't get any money then

I hate (the fine print)

Yeah, you can definitely join! The deadline for this round is tomorrow, though, so maybe consider waiting for the next round?

Well, this isn't my best poetry (I don't really like it XD) but... anyway, here it is. I'll definitely join the next round!

Empty.

Empty words

Empty faces

Empty consolations

And hands

Reaching and reaching and reaching and spinning

Flailing and rolling and ugh  - ugh - ugh -

STOP

No

Run

Scream

Hide

But who is it screaming?

Hear the sound

But

Feel disconnected

I am watching

No longer inside of my body

My soul

Is gone

Leaving only an empty shell.

They cannot bring me back

They try,

Their words

And tears

And pity, attempts at laughter

Scribbling through the darkness

Tiny flashes of light

Gone in a moment.

The petals fall,

disintegrate

All that's there to remember.

They think I’ll survive

Chin

Up

Move

On -

But they will never

Can never understand

Life

Is empty

Without

You.
