Musicals! Yay musicals!

Musicals! Yay musicals!

Musicals! Yay musicals! We had a thread for these a while ago but it's long dead now so here's a shiny new one! Yay! /peppiness

At the moment I'm listening to the 2005 revival cast recording of Sweeney Todd... Patti LuPone is amazing... And the score is cool, 'cause it's just a handful of instruments as opposed to a full orchestra, which makes for an interesting change.

I'm also a fan of Disney's The Little Mermaid (because Sherie Rene Scott is amaaaaaazing... Well, everyone was but SRS especially....), and Aida (again, SRS, amazing... but a definite WTH Casting Agency with Disney's plans to make a movie with *Beyoncé* and *Christina Aguilera*... Ugh...).

And also Wicked (Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth and a mechanical dragon head... h'm...), Les Miserables (as a matter of course...), The Phantom of the Opera (Erik/Christine FTW. Raoul's just an annoying git, quite frankly), Cats (especially the filmed stage cast with Elaine Page, goodness yes...).

Oh, and Rent, of course. I love Rent. And Adam Pascal, I love Adam Pascal... Hopefully Disney'll recast him as Radames in their Aida movie. I might forgive them for their... poor... casting choices for Aida and Amneris if they got AP to do Radames again.

And Spamalot, because Monty Python + music is a wonderful combination. They didn't win Best Musical for nothing, you know.

I've also recently become mildly obsessed with some of the songs from The Music Man (namely, all of the Harold Hill songs, especially Ya Got Trouble...).

Off Broadway, I lovelovelove A Very Potter Musical. It's amazing. Especially Snape ("Ten points from Griffindor!"), Draco ("I want Hermione Granger! ...And a rocket ship.") and Voldy ("You think killing people will make them like you, but it doesn't. It just makes people dead").

H'm, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Danny Elfman is a genius (and he's doing the soundtrack for Alice in Wonderland! SQUEE! Do you have ANY idea how AWESOME that movie's going to be? Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, Johnny Depp, HBC, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Timothy Spall!? *squeesqueesquee*).

/overuse of the word amazing.

And what does everyone else think on the subject?

Hmm... Timothy Spall is ugly. Sorry, it's too late at night for this.

Perhaps, but he's a really good actor.

I'd probably rant/rave/etc. some more but it's 4:30 and I haven't eaten in, um, ten hours.

Clair, you can watch musicals on youtube. I did that with A Very Potter Musical, which, by the way was... "Totally Awsome". Bellatrix was not very good but Voldy, and Quirrel, and Harry, and Ron, and Malfoy (love Malfoy) as well as everyone else, where really good.

YouTube is a wonderful thing. So is Vuze, which I have just recently discovered and I *finally* got the 1998 version of Cats on my computer *happydance* and also AVPM, because YouTube takes a long time to load with our new ISP for some reason...

Anyway, yeah, AVPM!Bella was annoying. She had like one funny line ("He is your pawn, and you are his queen!") and the rest was... eh... I cracked up when Molly killed her, though. And Snape. Snape's death was funny... ("I'll show you... Watch very carefully... [sits up] ...[dies]")

Yeah, i ran around quoting it ("quirrel" and the Voldy tap song and "totally awsome" and talking like Snape and singing the Cho chang song and singing the winny pig that's in Canada Ginny song and just random stuff). But nobody got it since I was like the one one in the world to have seen it!

Ahh! Zack Ephron!  run!!!!!  It's on Mars so we need need Rumblroar!!! Also it was funny when *repeats entire darn musical*

Cats, is a very special musical to me since that was the very first musical I ever  saw. My mom and dad's first date was to see that and they bought the CD. Vuze has the 1998 version of it?

"I'm as happy as a squirrel/ when I'm with profesor quirrel!"

Youtube is the best.

Yes, Vuze has the 1998 version of Cats. *happydance* I've been watching it basically nonstop.

Vuze also has AVPM, incidentally. Basically it's what you see on YouTube minus the load time... Which makes it awesome.

J'adore musicals! The only one I've ever seen on Broadway is Wicked, which was amazing! I loved the dragon and the bubble that Glinda floats down in.

I do like The Music Man and Rent. I love White Christmas, and I love Funny Face, but I don't know if that counts as a musical... I love...My Fair Lady, and Holiday Inn, and more that my brain can't think of right now, because I am tired, and there is chocolate zucchini cake in the kitchen that is calling to me...

@ JFB: Wow, you've seen old musicals with Bing Crosby in them? My mom loves them, so I've seen just about all of them.....

I love Wicked, and A Very Potter Musical, umm.... I've seen HSM, and hated it and er.... I've seen that comercal with Cocoa Puffs at the Opera? You know - "I sing to you, upon this stage" "No Cocoa Puffs, to make me crazed" "A story of this, this box right here...." "COCOA PUFFS! Oh dear oh dear...." You pour the milk, as you can see "Mmmmm so chocolatey" "Look at it now" "It's crunchy and muchy, the very best stuff!" "I'm going cocooo for cocoa puffs"! Cocoa puffs, part of a good, breakfast!" Yes, as you can see, my knowledge of musical is rather limited.....

525,600 minutes! How do you measure, measure a year?

I love the musical Ragtime. It is an amazing musical, but with some... insulting bits. And sad bits. As every musical should have.

"Look at this. Rocket ship Potter. Star kid Potter. Moon shoes Potter. Traversing the planet with intergalactic travels. . . ." I love Malfoy. "You know who the ugliest girl in school is? I think it's that Hermione Granger. You know, if I could rate her on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the ugliest, 10 the prettiest, I'd give her... an 8. maybe a 9. Possibly a 9.4 since there is always room for improvement."

HARRY: " I'm writing a song for this girl I like. I'll just substitute your name for her name and you tell me if it is good."

"You're tall and fun and pretty
You're really, really skinny
Ginny
I'm the Mickey to your Minnie
You're the Tigger to my Winnie
Ginny
I want to take you to the city
Gonna take you out to dinny
Ginny
You're cuter than a guinea pig
Want to take you up to Winnipeg
That's in Canada!

NO it does not work with your name at all Ginny! Do you think it will make a girl fall in love with me?"

Ginny: " I think it all ready did"

Harry: "Well good! Cuz it's for Cho Chang!"

Omagosh there are T-shirts!!!!! Omagosh omagosh!!!!!  T-shirts with quotes on them from AVPM!!! All of the above and more! I want them so badly!!!

T shirts? Where? I finally am watching AVPM. But I have to go do school now, so I'll come back later with more thoughts on the subject. :)

Draco: And I'll have my rocketship?

Voldy: When the technology is available.

Snape: However, a person can be a Horcrux.

Harry: What's a Horcrux?

Snape: I'm not even going to tell you, Harry, you'll find out soon enough.

Well, I hate Dumbledore. I don't like the guy who does him at all. And he swears, and that's just wrong. I also really hate Ginny, for a lot of reasons. But, Malfoy is awesome! The random rolling on the floor thing...That's just wonderful. And the girl who plays him does such a good job. Oh, and Goyle. "Goyle rules!" yeah. So overall I guess I like it, even though it wasn't what I expected it to be.
My favorite part is probably the song that Draco and Ron sing about Hermione at the Yule Ball. Especially Draco. Does anyone else think Malfoy gets more stage time than Harry does? I think so. But since he's just so much better than Harry (in the musical), I guess that's fine. :)
