Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Writing+Art Contest!

Writing+Art Contest!

Credit to Rose bud for the original idea (felt the need to do that)

I was digging through Pudding's Place when I found Rose bud's "Writing/Art Contest!" and thought it was a really good idea! So, I'm gonna make one.

http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/puddingsplace/node/263703?page=... (Link to the original contest)

Here's how it works:

1. sign up as either an artist or an author.

2. on the 10th (or possibly sooner, whatever) I will assign each CBer a partner. There will be one author and one artist in each group.

3. There will be groups of two rounds. The groups will be judged on both partners' abilities. In the first semi-round, the author will post a short story. (Try to keep the stories under 1000 words) Then, the artist will draw a picture from the story. For the second semi-round, the partners will switch, with the artist posting a picture first, and the author writing a story for the picture.

Rules:

You can request other CBers as your partner.

We won't start until we have perfect two-person teams.

I will periodically post lists of all the authors, artists, and requested teams that we have.

Well, that's it! I'll post anything I've forgotten later, and make sure to ask me if you have any questions.

Hi, I'm excited to read your story! Do you have any ideas for what you're going to write about? I can probably manage most things, so you can do whatever you want with this.

Here is my story. I hope it's okay if I submit it now. I used some characters I created to write this story. It is 475 words long. enjoy!

~~~
June walked through the Day of the Dead festival, looking around. Everywhere, there were stalls set up, selling things like candles, candy, flowers-- was that a tamales stand? No, she remined herself. She was here to find her brother, August, before it got dark. Even though he was two minutes and thirty-six seconds older than her, June still worried about him. She knew that in his mind, August was probably building the spaceship that would successfully put a human on Mars.
She looked up from her old, worn out purple converse. She had arrived at Gloome's Graveyard. Most of the year, it was dark, damp, and, well, gloomy. But on November first, it was full of life-- or as full of life as a graveyard could be. June didn't celebrate the Day of the Dead, but every year she went to the graveyard to look at the alters. It always smelled like freshly baked rolls and marigolds, and the feeling of happiness and sorrow managed to get along, at least for a few hours.
She walked in the black gates, which were wide open tonight, and tugged nervously at the bottom of her favorite blue sweater, looking for August. Then she saw him. He was standing with his back turned to her, but it was definetly him. She knew from his black hoodie, with the hood up. It took her a moment to realize why he was here.
 April. He was standing in front of April's grave.
August and June had had a ten year old little sister named April. She had brown hair, piercing blue eyes, and could make anyone laugh.
And then she got sick...
June rushed to her brother's side. "August! Wow." August had decorated April's grave with four little candles, a picture of the three of them at the beach, sunflowers, and a Snickers bar. April's favorite.
"I thought you didn't believe in ghost stories," June said.
"I don't," said August, in his quiet voice, "But I was getting desperate." He looked down at the grave. "I know it's not much, but..."
"It's enough," June finished confidently. "And I think April would've liked it."
August looked up at her and smiled sadly, sheepishly, his green-blue eyes shining in the light from the candles. "They say that on the Day of the Dead, all our dead loved ones return. I guess I was hoping to see her again, just one last time, and say goodbye. Tell her I was sorry."
"She'll always be with us," June whispered. She took one long glance at the navy blue sky, covered in stars. "It's getting late, Aug. Let's go home."
Slowly and sadly, they turned to walk away. Then, June heard something.
"June? August?"
June spun around, almost hitting August in the face with her long blonde hair. She would know that voice anywhere.
"April?"
Here is a sketch! What do you think of it? I might do it digitally for the final thing so that it can be in color.
You did a nice job of dropping in visual details but would you mind giving a more detailed description of the three characters? Thank you!
Yes, I'm sorry! I was really trying to work details into the story. I hope it's not cheating to give an explanation of them to you. One thing I will say is that you did a really good job drawing them with all the details you did have.
Basically, August and June are twins, so any description I've already added to June also works for August, and any description I've added to August will also work for June (other than the short hair for August and the long hair for June, and the outfits they're wearing). I know this kind of makes no sense considering they aren't identical twins, but, I hope this helps with them. August is wearing his black hoodie with the hood up, just like you drew it (you drew it so well!) and some simple blue jeans. June is wearing a navy blue sweater and black leggings.
As for April, she has sort of and in-between hair length. Her hair goes down to her shoulders. She has bright blue eyes. Since she has kind of a ghostly presence, I guess you could just give her a simple white dress? I hope this is enough description on her. If not, let me know and I will help.
One last thing I forgot to mention: they all have pale-ish skin.
I really hope this helps. I was trying to put in details but I sort of struggled with description, sorry! If you need any other details or anything else that will help you draw this easier, let me know. Also, I added the color of what they are wearing in case you want to do it digitally like you said. Thanks so much!!
I just realized you might want to make June's sweater light blue if you are making a background because the sky is navy blue, but do what you want. You're an awesome artist.
Wow, yeah, that's really strong!
I'm impressed by how easily you conveyed so much information and emotion without it feeling heavy-handed; nice job!
