Sharp light illuminates the stairway, reflecting off of the white tile and metal railings. The chipped stairs turn sharply, slowly spiraling upwards. A rhythmic beating sound grows stronger; they are footsteps of a girl climbing the stairway; her black hair in it’s tight fishtail braid seems even darker in the unnatural lighting. She’s wearing a dark jacket over a midnight-blue knee length dress with dark sneakers meant to muffle her footfalls, but the sound still echoes through the empty space. Finally, she reaches a closed door and flings it open, stepping out into the cool night air. The door swings shut behind her, and the world of gleaming white tile and artificial light is left behind. Out here, on the roof of the building, the stars glimmer so close to the girl’s face that she reaches out, as if she thinks she can skim the sky with her fingertips. The only light up here is from the low burning stars, but it seems so much brighter than the harsh brightness from the stairway. Up here, it’s beautifully ethereal, and the girl seems to blend into the sky, one with the swirling stars.

Lazy clouds drift across a bright azure sky, casting light shadows on the grass. The park is mostly silent, a large expanse of grass only interrupted by a single paved path lined with benches. Trees are scattered across the space, and from them birds chirp to one another and nestle into the safest boughs of their wooden homes, and squirrels leap from branch to branch while playing a never ending game of tag. They stop and find shelter when they hear someone approaching. A girl is coasting on her bike on the paved path, stirring the leaves around her. Her long straight hair is dark brown with yellow ends, as if she decided to dip her hair in sunlight. She’s wearing a t-shirt and shorts, as well as having several expertly weaved friendship bracelets lining her arms. Her helmet is an array of colors, and the bike itself is a light orange. She pedals faster, and as the wind whips through her hair, her brown eyes are shining with traces of gold as she laughs. Long after the girl turns the corner and is hidden from view, her laugh carries on the wind.

Sunlight glances off of the metal of the fire escape, providing a small warmth to the chilly day. Down below at the height of autumn, leaves are red and orange enough to be fire consuming the branches of the trees. Dead brown leaves drained of their color clatter in the rush of chilly wind. A figure is sitting cross legged on the fire escape several stories up. They have pale skin, very light brown eyes, and shoulder-length hair that balances on the border of blonde and brown. They’re wearing a worn down jean jacket and leggings, with a band t-shirt beneath the jacket. Their black combat boots are a sharp contrast to the bright yellow cat ear headband on their head. Out of the open window behind them, a cat jumps down from the windowsill and pads over to where the figure is sitting. The cat is golden and long-haired with wide amber eyes. It jumps into the person’s lap, settles down, and they lift a hand to stroke the cat’s back. It seems that both of them are content to sit there for as long as they need, and in the autumn sunlight, both pairs of eyes seem poured of molten gold.

Early morning sunlight filters through the branches of the trees, leaves upturned towards the warmth. The forest is in full bloom, green sprouts shooting into the air and petals cautiously unfurling themselves to the world. A young girl is kneeling under the large branches of an oak tree, fingers braiding long pieces of grass together. Her auburn hair is loosely plaited down her back, a woven flower-and-grass crown circling her head. Her green eyes match the color of the clovers spreading out like a blanket underneath her. She is wearing a simple shirt and skirt, and a few stray flower petals have landed on her shoulders and in her hair. Her hand hovers near the ground, and she searches the growth for something. Finally, she smiles and plucks something from the lining of clovers and grass. A four-leafed clover. She tucks it behind one ear and returns to her work. As she reaches for another stalk of grass, the clover catches in the sunlight and looks carved of emeralds in the glow, and it is clear this is where she belongs.

Stained glass windows stretch from the high ceiling to the marble floor, casting a rainbow of colors across the grand room. Massive pillars support the roof and line the path through the room, up the small flight of gold-veined stairs. At the top, a round dais supports a huge stone-carved throne made of pink-tinged rock, polished to near perfection. The young woman sitting on the throne is tall and pale, with unnaturally pale, almost white, hair, which is pulled into a braid over one shoulder. She is not wearing a dress; rather, she is wearing leather boots and a plain shirt and pants, both of them a dark color that looks so out of place in the airy throne room. Several knives hang sheathed at her belt. A sterling silver circlet winds around her head in an intricate pattern. A sturdy sword lays across her lap. Her head is tilted up as if she can see the sky through the heavy rock, her hand hovering over the hilt of her sword. Suddenly, she snaps out her reverie and stands with a confident air only royalty can conjure. She looks forward to the open doors that lead outside, and to the battles that she will fight. She is ready.
