Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

We don't seem

We don't seem to have a music thread. I seek to remedy this.

For talking about, um, music! Songs! Artists! Whatever. Perhaps snippets of lyrics or something.

Three points:

1. Just bought the 5th anniversary Wicked soundtrack, mostly for the German+unidentified language (I think Japanese...?) bonus songs. Gutes tun/No Good Deed in German is ammmaaaaaaazing.

2. Recently downloaded a full show video thing of the pre-Broadway LM trials. Ursula's deleted four-line song=teh current obsession. "Now at last my plan is on its way to its delectable conclusion/Only one more sunset and then finally I'll own the little beast/Soon I'll have my brother just exactly where I want him/And I'll be unstoppable as long as I have this!" <3.

Interestingly enough it's the same tune as Prince Eric's "I can hear her laughter in the ripple of the waves against the shoreline/I can see her smiling in the moonlight as it settles on the sand/I can feel her waiting just beyond the pale horizon/Singing out her melody too lovely to withstand..."

Which makes the current obsession a reprise of Her Voice, oddly. Wish it hadn't been axed.

3. Singing in German must be really hard. Those were some impressive consonants in Gutes tun and Solang ich dich han.

Well, yes, assuming one could speak German then it probably would be fairly simple...

I think soon I'm going to look up Faith Prince or Heidi Blickenstaff singing the part of Ursula, just to see how they sound...

And yes, the Mary Poppins costumes are very pretty. I'll have to look at the LK ones...

The other cool bit with the LM scenery was that... thing... that Ursula was flying around in. Or... sailing... Or whatever. Do you know what I'm talking about...?

Heidi was good, but she had this weird... It almost sounded like the slightest of southern accents and it was ferociously distracting. She has an amazing voice and she's a fantastic belter, but the accent thingy was annoying.

Faith Prince was extremely different from SRS so the change was kind of jarring and I didn't like her much at first, but after I got used to it I changed my mind. She sings everything way different from SRS, who tended to almost downplay everything (with the strange result that it suddenly became much more interesting), where FP goes completely the opposite and over-exaggerates everything, also with good results.

*gets to see the nat. tour of MP in Denver in March* *is very excited*

Ah, the Ursula bubble. Presumably they came up with it because the costume would get in the way if the actress were to walk on and off like usual. It's rather big, and (for those who've never been a techie) there's always a lot of running back and forth and scenery moving going on quietly backstage. You don't want someone with big costumes (like the tentacles) walking around. So... you put them in a bubble, naturally, and then just roll them on when they have a scene. *shrug*

@ TNO (umlaut): Ah. I see.

*quietly walks over to disneyonbroadway site*

...Drat. Nothing on LM. They had your MP stuff, though.

Also, sometime very soon I am going to look up Aida like you suggested...

@ Falmiriel: Our reasoning, I think, is that musicals include, well, music, and if that explanation isn't sufficient... we CBers, as I am sure you know, have a habit of going off on tangents, etc.

And no, although I have somewhere heard of him, I do not really know who John Denver is or listen to him. Er... Who is he exactly? *bambie eyes*

There's a bit of an LM dry spell right now; it's off Broadway, but the tour doesn't start till September after the MP tour ends, so...

If you have iTunes though, you could (ask to) subscribe to the Disney on Broadway podcasts. They're fun and they're free, so...

So the MP tour is in summer 2010?

Our computer has iTunes, yes... Is an actual iPod required? *is not getting one until Christmas*

*has 11,000 words* *is too lazy to note this in the Inkwell where it belongs*

Oh yes, and I looked up the lyrics to "My Strongest Suit" because I recalled you saying it was a good song. Very... very odd. Slightly catchy... but in a weird sort of way. What exactly is the idea, may I ask?

I accidentally hit "preview," I hope ths doesn't come up twice...

The MP tour is now. It'll be in Denver in March when I get to see it, and then it ends in August. The LM tour starts in September.

No, you can listen to podcasts on a computer just like music. Ditto for the video podcasts.

Basically, Amneris (who sings MSS) is an incredibly vain, self-centered and rather oblivious princess. In Egypt, even though most of the actors who play her are blonde. Funny, that. Anyway, MSS introduces her.

Don't worry, though, she grows up (a lot) in the end after her life crashes around her (fiancé of nine years dumps her for a slave, her father is revealed to have been poisoned by said fiancé's psychotically ambitious father, said fiancé and said slave (really more of a friend... thing... by this point) are going to be buried alive, etc. etc. etc.) so she gets major Character Development. Yes. It's really Better Than It Sounds. Though, again... WTH Casting Agency as to the choices for Aida and Amneris in the upcoming movie... *gets down on knees and prays for Adam Pascal to do Radames again*

Long tours... when did MP start?

Then I will ask my parents.

Almost 19k now...

Ohh. That makes sense. Definitely. I think I was kind of confused because I was thinking SRS-->Ursula, SRS-->Amneris, Ursula is evil, therefore it stands to reason that Amneris is evil, so why is she singing about clothes? Which is probably not very effective thinking on my part. Ah well. ...Anyway it actually it sounds very interesting, plot-wise.

Beyonce is Aida... *recalls your previous rants on this subject* And whom did they cast as Amneris?

Radames being... *random guess* the fiance?

True... musicals do include music, so I guess I shouldn't complain Laughing

John Denver is this singer from like the 70s. He sang "Take Me Home, Country Roads" (you know, the song from that Miyazaki film, Whisper of the Heart... long story), "Sunshine On My Shoulders", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", and a bunch of other songs, but those are his best-known ones. Look him up; he has some good music.

@Mary:

Actually, SRS was going completely against typecast when she did Ursula, so... *shrug* Usually she's much more of a ditz/blonde housewife/motherly sort of character, which was why there was so much backlash against her being cast as Ursula. The other major complaints were that she was (a) too pretty to be Ursula and (b) absolutely nothing like Pat Carroll. Then again, she's brilliant in basically whatever she does, so the point is pretty much moot. Although she did get a lot of hate from some of the FP, PC, or Cicily Daniels fans.

Anyways, yes, Amneris is not evil by any stretch of the imagination, just... um... Yeah. Oblivious and empty-headed for the first half-ish of the play before she gets better.

Also, side note, while I *loved* Idina Menzel in both Wicked and Rent, she was *horrible* as Amneris, *why* did they cast her for that part?! *shakes head very fast* Her voice was all wrong for MSS and I Know the Truth was just sung and not emotional *at all*, no matter what all her fangirls try to tell you. Just... no.

Christina Aguilera (who, I might add, has never acted before...) is being cast as Amneris for the movie. *cries*

And yes, Radames is the fiancé. He's also a soldier, and he's not too happy about marrying Amneris because the palace makes him feel trapped.

Too pretty to be Ursula? *smirk* Actually though I don't think I've ever seen a picture of her without the wig on... ....*goodsearches image* Oh yes. Now I can see why one would say that, I guess.

She was in Grease... Hm. Never would've guessed.

I haven't watched the disney LM in awhile, but 'tis true that SRS does not sound like Pat Carroll... I like SRS better, personally, though I have nothing against PC.

Who is Cicily Daniels? ...and Idina Menzel? I know her name's familiar... someone who was in Wicked went to the highschool my grandmother taught at... I don't think it was her, but...

Christine Aguilera? I can see why you're distressed. :/

On a slightly random note, today it was suggested that I take Saint Ursula as my Confirmation name in two years.

(November 10, 2009 - 5:59 pm)

Well, since she's still gorgeous with the creepy contour makeup and whatnot, yeah... It works, though, the whole Ursula-as-a-prettyish-diva thing.

My current SRS-related obsession is The Last 5 Years, which is unbelievably sad, and she gets to use her vibrato a lot. *shakes head* I Know the Truth was bad enough, but Still Hurting and See I'm Smiling... Especially the end of See I'm Smiling, with that vibrato... *sobsobsobsob*

Cicily Daniels was, I believe, SRS's understudy. She put rather too much gospel-y sounding stuff into it for my liking, but she's got a decent fanbase.

Idina Menzel was Maureen in the movie Ren, and also the original Elphaba. She has both a decent fanbase (me included) and a rabid fanbase, which is unfortunate (the rabid part). She was like the third or fourth Amneris and she, um, didn't fit the role. At all. She *squeaked* throughout My Strongest Suit. Squeaked! And I'm fairly certain the almost-but-not-quite screaming during the high bits of I Know the Truth were her trying to belt the same way she did as Elphaba, the problem being that Amneris is quite literally *nothing* like Elphie and Aida (the play) is written in an *entirely* different style from Wicked, so the funky belting thingy she was doing does. not. work. for Amneris. /rant

As far as the... less-than-desirable casting for the upcoming Aida movie... You do *not* cast someone who has never acted before (regardless of how many people love her voice) for a part as subtly complex and dynamic as Amneris. It takes very careful handling to keep the transition from self-centered airhead to powerful, competent and aware leader of a country, especially since Amneris isn't even the main character. SRS pulled it off because she's an experienced actress with an amazing voice and amazing talent. Idina at least managed to make the change smooth and believable, even if her voice was horrendously unsuited for the role. Someone who's only qualification is having a nice voice? Not so much.

I have similar concerns for Beyonce's portrayal of Aida (and fingers crossed that they end up casting someone else (though Heather Headley would probably be too much to ask) because it isn't finalized yet...). Again, the character will have to be handled carefully to avoid coming off as overly arrogant and thus making her increasing guilt at her own selfishness and her selflessness towards both Amneris and Nubia itself seem out-of-character and/or awkward. Or, in the opposite direction, making her extremely selfless from the get-go, making her selfishness concerning Radames seem out-of-character and/or awkward.

Radames, too, needs to be properly casted, because he makes a complete 180 through the play, going from arrogant, king-of-the-world soldier set to marry the princess to a man willing to betray his country, his father, and fiancée/princess/best friend to be with a slave, optimally with as little weirdness as possible. This is why I pray for Adam Pascal, who is love. His voice is ammaaaazing and he has pretty hair and eyes.

Personally, so far as "ideal casts" are concerned, I'd go for the OBC for the movie, all the way. Never mind that they're all about ten years older at this point, between Disney's makeup artists and their talent as actors they could pull it off no problem.

*pant pant*

Saint Ursula. X)

Random TL5Y rambling:

1. Sherie Rene Scott was insanely good in this. She's officially my hero.

2. Norbert Leo Butz was *also* insanely good in this. His range... *shakes head* And he can pull of a falsetto without sounding ridiculous.

3. I love The Schmuel Song. NLB's hilarious fake accent for Schmuel and the clock were both amusing and wonderful. Especially all the phlegm he was throwing all over the place. And the ending... so sweet. "And shouldn't I want the world to see/The brilliant girl who inspires me?"

4. Climbing Uphill. Just... Climbing Uphill. WORD. That song is EPIC. The almost celtic-y internal monologue thing is love.

5. I'm Still Hurting and See I'm Smiling are probably the saddest songs I have heard in my entire life. No exaggeration. See I'm Smiling especially with it's using the same lines as I Can Do Better Than That from ~four years before ("You, and you, and nothing but you...") so bitterly and especially especially when one figures out that No One Needs to Know chronologically was probably *right before* this scene (the timeline's all convoluted and hard to follow, but in a good way that leads to quite a few Fridge Logic tears).

6. I love the vaguely jazzy piano throughout the piece. And the violin/cello stuff. And... basically, I love the music. It's wonderful.

7. Jason Robert Brown has an excellent sense of rhythm. His lyrics are really (dare I say it?) quirky and interesting, and they convey emotions really well, even without the help of the two excellent actors. Especially in A Miracle Would Happen, Climbing Uphill, Shiksa Goddess, I Can Do Better Than That, and A Summer in Ohio.

*deep breath*

Yes, the girl who went to Cor Jesu (the highschool) played someone whose last name was Morrible (was it Madame Morrible or Mrs. Morrible or something?)... I know this because I was wandering around reading the posters they had up... but still not paying that much attention...

In Aida... exactly who is Aida, for the record? Are she and Amneris sisters or something, or is Aida the slave, I know Amneris is the princess (who Radames was engaged to?)... *has gotten completely mixed up with the characters in all of TNO's (umlaut) OBCR obsessions*

Well, yes, and Beyonce is not even a good singer, and completely overrated...

"On the whole I've been a saint..."

Okay. I looked up the lyrics to See I'm Smiling and Still Hurting and Climbing Uphill. I agree that they are very pretty songs with sad lyrics. (Note that I say this without having more than a vague, vague idea of the plot.) Of course, there was some swearing, but still...

Piecing this together as best I can, SRS played Catherine, who is trying to become a... singer/actress thingy and is married to Jamie, a writer, played by Norbert Leo Butz (why do all these people have such cool names), and there's something wrong with their marriage, and some sort of subplot about Ohio. From what I gather. And it's called The Last Five Years because... um, it's about the past five years of their life...?

Have I got that right?

Madam Morrible, yes.

Aida is the Nubian princess and is captured by Egyptians in the second act of the play. Radames gives her to the Egyptian princess Amneris (to whom he is betrothed) as a gift because he's kind of avoiding her. Aida and Radames proceed to fall in love, which equals a death sentence when they're found out. They're buried alive.

On to The Last 5 Years (and yes, it's 5 and not "five"). Vague plot is that it's Cathy telling her side of the story of her and Jamie's relationship, in reverse chronological order. Simultaneously, Jamie is telling his side of the same story in chronological order. In other words, Cathy's story starts off right after Jamie leaves (with Still Hurting), then we go to Jamie, five years previously, right after his first date with Cathy. The play ends with Cathy right after her and Jamie's first date, and Jamie as he's leaving her for good. The only time the two directly interact on stage is The Next Ten Minutes, when they're married.

Basically, they meet, fall madly in love, get married, and then he becomes really popular with his book and starts to spend more and more time writing and less and less time with her, so they start to grow more and more distant until he decides there's no chance of repairing their marriage like she wants to so he leaves. *cue Still Hurting*. Argh. Although, SH is actually the first song, followed by Shiksa Goddess which is right after Jamie's first date with Cathy.

As to Ohio, that's Cathy's home state and she's determined to never go back... There's a song (I Can Do Better Than That) in which she explains to Jamie early on in their relationship that her friend got married straight out of high school and lives in a "little cute house on a little cute street with a crucifix on the door" and that it was just the "typical facts of a typical life in a town on the eastern shore" and she wanted to do better than that. Specifically, she wants to act, but due to her self-doubt issues (as explained in Climbing Uphill) she doesn't actually get started until Jamie encourages her to in The Schmuel Song.

Anyway, back to my original point, she ends up with a job thingy in Ohio and she's surrounded by these... *ahem* highly eccentric people (and Wayne the snake) and Summer in Ohio (the song) is her writing a letter to Jamie telling him that a) she misses him, b) she bought his newly-published book and c) asking him to come and visit. And there's a bit about how she wants to "state in my next bio: I'm never gonna go back to Ohio..."

Yeah.

Anyway.

Better Than It Sounds, really. It helps that SRS is an amazing belter in a highly belt-happy part.

Madam. Right.

Erm... do they *stay* buried alive?

Judging by your summary, that actually is really, really, really sad... Is there a happy ending? ;)

And is there a reason that it's "5" as opposed to "Five," or it that just because?

Mom says that we can "look into" going to the LM tour in 2010... *tap dances*
