Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Greek cafe

Greek cafe

You are wandering the streets of Greece when you see a cafe. Like all the other cafes. But somehow different.

You enter, and the smiling young woman gives you the menu. "Welcome to the Greek Jewel Cafe," she says. "My name is Hera, after the goddess."

/Rose ice cream/

/Ruby water/

/Jade water/

/Sapphire chocolate cake/

/Meditteranean pastries/

/Sumac scones/

/Croissants tourmaline/

You frown at the many mentions of jewels as you make your order. You realize that your adventure here will not be finished as soon as you finish eating.

I sit at the cozy booth with Scuttles, Avara, and Phoenix, watching as a confused-looking Periwinkle walks in and orders. Darkvine follows soon after, with someone who I assume to be an AE.

When they get their food, Peri and Darkvine come and join us. Darkvine pulls up a chair, as the booth is getting a bit crowded.

"What are you all doing in Greece?" Peri asks.

"Just a vacation," I say. "What about you? Isn't it funny that we're all here together?"

"I'm...not really sure," Peri responds, glancing back at Hera (Agalia?) at the counter. "For some reason I can't remember how I even got to Greece."

"There's definitely something peculiar going on," Scuttles agrees. "I wonder if we can get those two to tell us anything."

I walk into a cafe, feeling a little nervous. Towns, cities and things like that made me edgy, and I was not one to just walk into a cafe. And yet here I was.

Looking around, I was startled to see some CBers all crowded around a table together, and they looked to be in deep descution. I didn't know any of them well, so I glanced away, feeling a bit awkard. But I kept my expression mutual and held my head high as I went to the counter.

"Hello," said the lady there. "I'm Hera. Did you want something off the menu?"

"Yes," I said, though I really didn't. I figited with my bow string that crossed my chest. "Jade water, please."

"That's all?" Hera asked.

"Yes," I say firmly.

"Alright then," Hera said mildly and got my requested drink.

Once I had the cup in my hand, I was unsure of were to go. The CBers were still talking, so I went and took a seat next to a window about four tables away. I took a drink of my jade water and thought.

"We're gonna need all the brains we can get," I say. Which is great timing, because I see Hawkstar. Hawkstar's smart, they can help us. "HEY, HAWKSTAR!" I wave aggressively, then remember to check my volume. "I mean, hey, Hawkstar! Come sit with us!!"

You notice that Hera frowns when you call Hawkstar, but not as if she's disapproving of your tone of voice. More like she's worried about the fact that you're all conferring together.

It's amazing how the beauty of the cafe, the taste of the food, and the thrill of the mystery have taken away your tiredness. There's harmony here, and peace. You've already fallen in love with the place, with its booths and delicate food, and the way a cool breeze enters from the street every time the door is opened. But by now you're absolutely certain: lovely as the cafe is, it's just a front for something else. Probably a place for Kostas and Agalia to meet. And then there are all the mentions of jewels... even the name of the cafe is linked to that: the Greek Jewel Cafe. If this isn't meant to be a cafe, what could it be meant for? You're glad to see that Hawkstar comes towards you. Somehow, the solving of this mystery has become vastly important to you.

i jump at Periwinkle's loud voice. "Hawkstar! come here!"

A bit startled I jump. This is half the reason why I never strayed into cafes.

"Hawkstar!" Peri calls again. "we are trying to figure something out. Come help!"

"Oh sure."

I rise from my chair and drag it over to the CBer table next Peri.

"She is going to help us" Peri informed the rest of the CBers.

Lupine smiled. "All the help we can get."

I look aroud at the gathered CBers. "what is the problem?"

Despite your nervousness, though, you're grateful to the fact that the cafe is pretty peaceful except for the CBers. The most unnerving thing is probably the way Kostas is looking at you and the other CBers, with an expression that you can't even describe. He looks as if he'll probably be going soon, though.

And at least it's mostly just CBers here. The thought of a problem, though, makes you uncertain again. You're generally good at solving problems, but is there a problem with this place? And what sort of a problem? You wish you had come some other day, when maybe you could have the cafe to yourself. It seemed peaceful enough from the outside.

Hera, however, saves you from saying anything else by speaking herself.

For some time Kostas has been looking irritated as one CBer after another enters. He casts several glances at Agalia, who just shrugs and shakes her head. Finally it looks as if his patience is at an end, and he rises as if to go out.

Agalia speaks quickly. "Kostas," she says, "what harm is there in telling them? Maybe they could help us."

For a moment they look at each other, trying to stare each other down. Everyone else in the cafe is breathless, hoping that the mystery will be revealed at last. Then Kostas sighs. "You know my thoughts on it, Agalia," he says. "And you know what everyone else will think, too. But if you want to tell them, I know you will."

"Yes, I will," Hera says, a spark of amusement in her face. She turns to the CBers. "I think I can trust you - and something tells me that if I don't tell you, you'll find out for yourselves anyway. There's a tiny island close to Greece that's a country on its own. Scarcely anyone knows about it. It's called Taryn al Cyper - the Isle of the Cypresses. It's owned at the present moment by tyrants with vast amounts of treasure. In order to help the inhabitants of Cyper, we're smuggling - "

Kostas, who has sat down again, stands up angrily. "For Hermes' sake, Agalia - Hera - don't tell them everything!"

Agalia faces him calmly, her eyes like the summer sea. "It's all right, Kostas. I promise you. Perhaps you've forgotten how you joined our forces?"

"I've forgotten nothing," Kostas says shortly, but he sits down again.

"The best way to undermine a tyrant is to take away his supplies," Hera continues to the CBers. "And so, in order to free Cyper from their reign, we've been smuggling away the treasures of the tyrants and giving them instead to the movements of revolution in Cyper. The cafe is really a meeting place for those who are helping us."

"Well I guess that is why I walked into this cafe" I said slightly suspicus but also releived. "I will help so long as I see it is right too."

I glance at the other CBers waiting for their reactions and response.

"Sure, why not." I say, shrugging. "I'm always up for causing chaos in the name of service."

Despite my casual reaction, I am actually interested in helping these people. But what I said is correct too; there's nothing better than causing chaos and helping people at the same time.

I walk in, noticing all the CBers in the cafe. I notice Agalia explaining the problem as I fill out the online form for sapphire chocolate cake and Jade water. "May I be of assistance as well? I am also a CBer." I ask.

As you eat and wait for Agalia to continue talking, you notice the harmony of the cafe. A few tiles are set into the wall, with a rythm and cadence to the way they look that makes you think they're probably made with the Golden Ratio firmly in mind. There's also a table next to one of the walls, with a board of Go, all set up for a game, on it. And, of course, the food is lovely. You smile. This is about the perfect place for you.
