Theatre!

Today, I tried out for my school musical, something I haven't done in the two years I've been at this school because of conflicts.  I've wanted to act for some time now, but had kind of accepted that I wasn't going to be able to act (it's so time consuming!).  Now I'm sitting here wondering what I've gotten into.  None of this feels real, it's a bit like a dream come true, but coming true when the dream's just starting to get stale, if you know what I mean.  Anyway, the musical is going to be Cinderella (<3 <3 Rodgers and Hammerstein) and I'm hoping I get some sort of principal role, though that is not likely at all.

Anyway, anyone else here in theatre?  I know you're out there, everybuggy!  What should I expect?  I've never been in a play other than the mandatory ones in elementary school...  What are some things you really enjoy about acting, etc.?

And just one more question, while I'm at it.  I'm in an orchestra, I play violin and piano, am in choir, about to be in a chamber music program, raise guide dogs (which means meetings), and am in various school clubs.  Am I crazy to be doing theatre?

I think it's good to try as many things as you possibly can while you're young. You never know which one(s) may turn into lifelong activities.

...I'm totally listening to R&H's Cinderella right now! (the 1997 version, with Bernadetttte!)

POINT ONE: You are not crazy to be doing theatre. You are never crazy to do theatre (says the theatre major :D).

POINT TWO: Imma theatre major! Yay! Totally trying out for Company next block.

POINT THREE: The best part of acting, I think, is that... well, okay, I have problems with emotional responses offstage. I go through life in a haze of neutrality and indifference... but onstage and in character it's completely different, and the emotions one gets from singing and acting are just... amazing. I don't know. Perhaps I just use the theatre as a crutch to actually feel things like anger and sadness and passion properly, but... yeah. I'm not explaining myself very well right now.

Auditions for Company are in... 21 days. I'm singing Moments in the Woods from Into the Woods and I haven't decided on my monologue yet. Something simpler than Saint Joan, at any rate.

What's your play?

My friend was in a production of Into the Woods a while back.

@ Tiffany W:

How old are you?

You are never too busy to do theatre.  I am in band, chorus, and dance, and I still have time for theatre, even if it's just as tech crew. (yeah...I was upset about that)

I was in a musical for the first time in 2010 and got one of the main parts :D :D :D That included singing. This year I am in drama group, and our first play of the year will be in December.

TNÖ's and SusyQ's posts aren't up yet, but I have very exciting news for you all!

I GOT CALLBACKS!!!  I'm really happy about that. :)  The person in charge of the program (not the director - in fact, I don't really even know what her specific position is) told me she really liked my audition.  Because my schedule conflicts a bit with some of their rehearsals, I'm probably going to get a part as some kind of merchant, but that'll still be fun.

@TNÖ: I think you make perfect sense.  It's really wonderful that theatre can be an, for lack of a better word, escape.  I think that would be fun for me as well - I'm so busy being me all the time, that it would be fun to be someone else and experience the world differently, even if I'm just complaining that people won't buy my cheese. :)  Also, I wish you all the best with theatre at Cornell and hope you get into Company!!  *must. listen. to. Company. soundtrack. now.*  On another note - oh deary me, Bernadette did R&H Cinderella?  I must find that as well!!

Congratulations, Leaf! But don't give up your violin.

Yes she was. In 1997. She was the stepmother and she was the best part of the movie. (With Jason Alexander being second and everyone else being... not good.)
