The Lamp Post*throws confetti and colored ribbons to celebrate starting the RP wheeeeeee*
(Btw, I'm going to make a charrie or two under my usual CB name/post on the RP thread very soon…I'm sort of busy because I have too many hobbies and activities and like all of them too much to quit one.)
(responding to your comment on page 7) I agree with you about Elizabeth George Speare's books 🙂 I've read Sign of the Beaver, the Bronze Bow, and Calico Captive, but not the Witch of Blackbird Pond…what is it about? Oh yes, try Scott O'Dell! As a note, there's very little character interaction in Island of the Blue Dolphins tho, which is mostly about survival. (Also I looked and I think Mari Hanes has only written two historical fiction books, one about Pocahontas and the other about her son, so I'm unsure how much there will be to check out…) I think I've heard about The Eagle of the Ninth before…it sounds interesting 🙂
Yes, you're right…there are practically no limits to fantasy and yet everyone seems to write within the limits set by all the contemporary popular books. It seems like if everyone keeps building off of other books in fantasy, there will inevitably be…a lot of cliches. Or maybe we have hit the limit for fantasy…I think I'll write something as an experiment later…
Hm…I really like deep, personal, honest poetry but sometimes describing it can be tricky, especially because a lot of poetry leans towards the abstract side. And I sort of like how abstract it is. Sometimes I struggle enjoying poems with too clear of a meaning or shallow of a topic. But not too hard to understand, because then it won't be meaningful to me. Happy feelings…I'll try that…
I like a Midsummer Night's dream 🙂 I haven't read many plays, but I think the concept of it is pretty unique (although a little cOnFuSiNg to tell who likes who and who doesn't like who and what's this person's name again??) I've flipped through R and J before…I really didn't like the humor, but the story itself was written quite eloquently. Shakespeare writes good poetry…
Thank you 🙂 yes, it is paying off…
😀 Our friendship means a lot to me too!!! Before this thread started, I didn't know that many people who shared the same interests as I did, so I was really struggling socially…you are such a kind, talented friend and it's just wonderful being able to talk with you about things I usually don't get the chance to talk about <333
-
AmethystParticipantthe Silver SeaI love your post on the RP XD Alabaster looks like a great charrie! I'll probably be creating a fox charrie as well (as soon as I can get the time…)
Actually, I've never read Calico Captive (how did that happen?) TheWofBP is about a girl who's grown up in Barbados with her grandfather, but he dies and she goes to stay with her aunt in a Puritan town in colonial America. It's very well-written and completely pulls you into it 🙂 I looked for Mari Hanes and only found her autobiography :/ That might be good, though.
A limit for fantasy??? I don't think so, though… older fantasy is much more varied, so if we built off of that instead, we could probably come up with more innovative stuff. At least more fun than what's popular right now, anyway… also, I'm fairly certain that most publishing houses want to keep publishing the same sort of books because they sell, but there might be authors writing much better stories and just not getting published or not being widely known. (And although it gets boring to read about academies, it's actually kind of fun to write about them… :^})
Ack yes, Shakespeare is kind of hard to understand, especially in the beginning of the plays. He just pops you into the middle of the action and it's like wAiT a second what's happening– Yes, his poetry is lovely 😀
That's great!!
I don't have many friends either, and it really is so nice to be able to chat with you! Tysm, you're a wonderful friend too <3

JellyfishI'm working on my RP post, but I'm a perfectionist so it's taking a long time :/ just wanted to let you know that I will post, when I finish writing it. And I'm trying to finish asap, because people are probably waiting to start :/
Also I'm starting school on Monday eek–
-
AmethystParticipantDon't worry, take your time 🙂 And from what I've read of yours, you're a super good writer, so I'm sure it'll be great 🙂
Nooooooo not already?!???? *sends positivitea and optional hugs* :/ Good luck, I hope it goes wonderfully.

LyricParticipanthelloooo
racing the clock...Tysm!!! <3
My goal is to post tonight (with some Fern Wolf lore I thought of mixed in…hope that's ok? Normally I'd confirm ideas with you, but right now because I'm already really behind on the RP and don't know when you'd respond, I'm just implementing those ideas right now?) once this comment posts (so I don't double-post). I gave myself a due date to post three hours from now. If I don't post by then, it means I got severe writer's block or couldn't access the computer.
Okay…so about plot…I think it'd be a good idea for Moondrop to make the "worrying discovery" I mentioned in the outline (which is the prophecy you wrote 😀 ) Even though it seems like it makes more sense for a prophecy to be found in the forest, I'm sure we could make it so the prophecy originated in the forest and somehow got to the tundra. If I was posting the prophecy discovery, I just don't know when I would get to it…I'm trying to see how I can balance schoolwork & RP this year, though…
-
AmethystParticipanthiii
Dr Livingstone I presume?Yes, that's fine! It looks like extremely good lore 😀 The whole part is so good too – I love the atmosphere and the writing and everything really :))
Will do! Maybe Moondrop could find it on the foraging expedition that's being planned; it would fit in nicely that way. And if you'd like, perhaps Moondrop could create an "official" Fern Wolf charrie, who obviously wouldn't control any main Fern Wolf action but who could just keep things going with the other Fern Wolves? Just an idea 🙂
-
AmethystParticipantAslan's HowOoh and I've got another historical fiction rec! I just finished reading The Second Mrs. Gioconda by E.L. Kongisburg, and it's very good – the main character doesn't act in accordance to the times, which is a bit irritating, but it's well-written, completely CB-appropriate, and super fun and absorbing. The whole theme is how Leonardo da Vinci came to paint the Mona Lisa, and I love the explanation the author came up with 🙂 She also wrote A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver, about Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, which is fairly good as well. Just thought I'd mention them, since I did enjoy them 🙂

LyricParticipant:???
hi!Thank you 😀
That's a wonderful idea! I'm really inactive on CB right now, but trying to get active again 🙁 Don't worry if you advance the plot a bit without me (and feel free to make a post as Celandine if you need her to make an announcement or something important like that)
Those sound good; I'll check them out sometime (sometime as in when I have time…sigh…)
And–I'm sorry I keep disappearing 🙁 I was working on an RP post this weekend and I was almost finished before school started again :/ I'm really hoping to finish soon though!!

hello hello :DGreat, I'll do that!

Great! I haven't really had much time to post on the RP either, but I'm thinking of writing some stuff as Amethyst today… Good luck with everything, I hope school lightens up :[ And don't worry about not replying here, take as long as you need <3

GlasswaterLyric!! Same, I've been missing you so much :[ I've been doing all right, though… basically much busier than usual with school, which is taking up way more time than I'd thought it would. I'm almost done with my next post on the Magic Wolf RP, though, so it should be appearing soon! How've you been?

LyricParticipantditto
...somewhere...Yeah, I'm busy too; schoolwork takes fOrEvEr to finish :/
I've been very stressed out lately (which is relatively good in my case, but other than that, I think I'm doing okay…I really wish I had the time and energy and motivation (which often depends on energy) to work on the RP though 🙁
Irivia is a wonderful name! 🙂 I think for story purposes we could just pretend that Celandine was mentoring her in the past to be the new leader, and now Irivia's starting to take on more pack responsibilities? That would explain the change in leadership, and make it a sort of co-leadership?

Happy Early Thanksgiving!hello! 😀
I'm doing better–a little bit more active on CB now (yay!) I do have a lot of time-consuming assignments coming up though (including a three page comic. I'm not good at drawing people and even worse at drawing them in certain poses, so I'm really worried about it). How are you doing?
-
AmethystParticipant>:>
November goes so fast!!Yayy! *throws confetti (I wonder how much confetti is scattered throughout this thread, actually…)* Oh dear :/ To be honest, I'm not good at drawing people either… perhaps you could go very cartoon and basically do stick figues? I'm doing better too – still not too great on free time, but my life has become a bit less crazy, which is good. I've been writing tons of stuff, ofc, though that's also been a bit more irregular than usual. Life in general has been shockingly uneventful… Also, even more shockingly, I'm practically out of reading material >:0 I wish some of my favorite authors would get out more books, though unfortunately the ones like C.S. Lewis can't :/ Are you currently reading/writing anything? Good luck on the comic <3
Origami says <puufa>, which I'm sure means something very deep in captcha language~

LyricParticipant:D
Happy Thanksgiving!Hi Amethyst!
Lol I'll count later but for now here's mOrE cOnFetTi to celebrate you winning the Poetry Contest a week ago!
*throws poem-shaped confetti—however poems are shaped…maybe a collection of blobs in an hourglass inside of a transparent sphere?*
Congrats! I think your poem is really inspiringly challenging/questioning (in a good way) and rhythmic!
I did try stick figures, but it turned that because I had already done a storyboard not using stick figures, the version with stick figures looked like a downgrade so I ended up just drawing over the storyboard. Thanks for the suggestion though 😀 it helped
Oh no, you're out of reading material?! Oh dear…I wish I had some reading recommendations for you but I haven't been reading many fiction books.
Right now I'm reading through a book of daily writing prompts and a book of daily reading prompts and flipping through a really disorganized pile of Faces magazines occasionally, but other than that I haven't really been reading. I do have a ton of things on my reading list but I'm hesitant to borrow the from the library because I have the suspicion I won't get around to reading them. Also–I'm a pickier reader than I used to be XD
Besides the RP (going to post soon btw), I'm working on revising the plot of my novel, but I probably won't type it out for a while because I'm planning to finish a short story I started in the summer first, whenever I get around to that. How about you?
Nya's reply to Origami: <emdpi>. Sounds suspiciously like a type of Thanksgiving pie, but one can never tell…
-
AmethystParticipantAww, thanks so much!! <3 I really loved yours as well – the imagery was spectacular/so poetic, and the idea of nebulae and galaxies feel innately like poetry for some reason 😀
Oh good! Congrats for finishing it *some more confetti, in the shape of stick figures*
Ooh, I love writing prompts for some reason… I'm constantly taking too many books out of the library and then scrambling to finish them all 😛 On the other hand, I just love the feeling of having tOo MaNy books to read. I think I probably am too, to be honest – it's often rather hard to find good books.
I was thinking of doing something for the November novel writing challenge, but when November starts I'm almost always in the middle of something else and too invested to start something else… anyway, I've been writing the ski lodge and the RP and various Kyngdom things (lol "too invested to start something else" but, well…) and a romcom, though not a very conventional one as it's written in third person and past tense and the heroine has more personality and gumption than most romcom heroines (or I hope so :P) Good luck with the novel and the short story!
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving, btw! Did you do anything special (if you'd like to share)?
<iouuu> I owe you? Or just a Hedgehog Sound?

the Dawn TreaderHi Amethyst!! 😀 How are you doing?
Thank you <3 I’m officially finished with school for 2024, so things are getting better 🙂 And very unexpectedly, I didn’t have any final projects, just tests. It’s the projects that really stress me out. Tests…not so much. So I’m very relieved.
Tysm! 😀
The confetti count is 12 😀 I guess we both love throwing confetti XD
I think that writing prompts are really helpful to get exposed to new ideas, maybe? Too many books sounds wonderful, honestly 😀 I agree! It’s so hard to find good books. I usually look for interesting titles first, then glance at the cover because sometimes you can tell something about the quality or the genre from the cover (although I’ve been wondering what would happen if someone purposely published a book with no cover art. There are probably already books with no cover art out there, though). After that if I’m interested enough I read the jacket cover, and then usually dislike it for one reason or another. Rarely, if I like the plot, I flip through to make sure the writing style doesn’t have any of my pet peeves (e.g. too much telling and too little showing or too much exposition and etc.)
NaNoWriMo? (I think that’s the writing challenge you were talking about?) Ooh, a romcom? That’s good that you’re giving the heroine some more depth 😀 Thank you!
Yes, I did! My great-uncle came to visit, so that was cool, and we went to a modern art museum where I took way too many photos of abstract art pieces lol. How was your Thanksgiving?
Hm, I don’t know… I just watched a few videos on hedgehog sounds and I’m rather surprised because I thought they’d sound more like mice for some reason…
Are you doing anything for the holidays/Christmas? I'm going camping, then doing a white elephant exchange with my extended family, visiting friends, probably watching My Little Pony (apparently I haven't grown out of it? not sure how. And now I feel like a 7 or 8-year-old again XD), and probably baking and writing and reading.
-
AmethystParticipantthe Beavers' houseHi!!! I'm doing pretty well – also on vacation, and making the most of it 🙂 Although now the thing that's taking up most of my time is present-making…
Yay, that's so great :DD
Very impressive :0 On the other hand, I suppose it makes the thread more colorful? *refrains from throwing more confetti*
Yep, that's basically my procedure too! Looking for books is so difficult :/ I also tend to stick to authors I know are good, but then I finish reading the books they've written (even if there's more than one) and end up without reading material again. I have seen a few older books with little/no cover art – basically the cover is just a plain color with (if you're lucky) the title on it. It's interesting… and yeah, I often decide based on the cover, despite the saying "You can't tell a book by its cover" lol – I feel like increasingly one actually can. I think publishing houses are designing covers to reflect the mood/content of the book so that people will want to read it as soon as they pull it out of a bookshelf or see it in a bookstore (or, in my case, not want to read it :|)
Yes, I was talking about novel writing 🙂 Most of my reading right now is made up of romcoms because they seem to make up the most innocent/happy/interesting portion of the teen books I can find, which is kind of depressing… though I lately started reading a series called The Vanderbeekers, which is targeted more towards middle schoolers, and it's very sweet and fairly interesting; and on the romcom front, I've almost finished one called Dungeons and Drama, which is much better than I thought it would be from the cover and has very nice charries 🙂 I saw that you were reading Pride and Prejudice – it's fairly high on my reading list right now, and this summer I was reading other Jane Austen books, like Emma. Anyway, book tangent, sorry 😛
Ooh, nice! My Thanksgiving was fairly peaceful, just staying at home and having a nice dinner. For Christmas, I'm seeing some of my extended family and some semi-friends who live nearby, so it should be fun 🙂 And yep, reading and writing are very high on the list of Things To Do 😀 I've never seen My Little Pony, but for some reason I've been listening to a song called "Mi burrito sabanero" by Juana, which is basically for very little children – I never heard it when I was the appropriate age, but now I'm listening avidly…
Oh my gosh, I didn't actually know that hedgehogs made sounds at all, that's amazing :0

Anvard, ArchenlandHappy early New Year!
Hope you enjoyed/are enjoying your vacation! Yep, present-making does take a tremendous amount of time. What did you make this year? I knitted a coaster for my mom and made a wall hanging decoration (turns out it's quite frustrating to tie dozens of knots in sewing thread. never doing that again lol) for Rora (she's probably not on the CB anymore, btw 🙁 ), but I had no idea what to make for my dad. I'm really terrible at brainstorming presents to give people *sighs*
I heard you were doing a spaced out present-opening! How was it?
Lol yes 😀
I also do that, but up until about now I hadn't found any authors who wrote books I liked and was mostly just rereading the books on my shelf. Oh yes, definitely!
I've never really read YA because I was strongly encouraged to read classics instead (which is what got me to reading Pride and Prejudice). Oh, I've read The Vanderbeekers before! I agree. Huh, that does seem like the type of book to get judged by its cover.
I finished P&P (abbreviation lol). It was wonderful. (I'm up for discussing it in length if you're interested 😀 ) I'm definitely going to read more by Jane Austen–probably starting with Sense & Sensibility because I already watched the (1995 probably?) movie and want to see if it's true to the book.
Ooh that's a good song (which will probably be in my head for the rest of today haha)! I listen to a lot of songs that are below my age level 😀 There's this one album of songs for babies 1-34 months old that perplexes me because it talks about topics that babies probably wouldn't understand (unless everyone does understand difficult topics as babies, and just don't verbally communicate them, which is an interesting idea.)
Me neither 😮
I started reading one of C.S. Lewis's nonfiction books today. It's very different from the CoN, but still written really well. Nonfiction has been growing on me–I used to really dislike it because I found most of the children's nonfiction I read to be shallow and uninteresting (probably because it can't be too deep or complicated or wordy), but now I'm finding it very interesting.
Oh, and a note for @Admins: my location is fictional.
-
AmethystParticipant:^)
TerebinthiaHappy two days until New Year's! Actually happy New Year's Eve now, I started writing this yesterday.
Yes, I'm enjoying it – likewise 🙂 This year my sister and I made a quote calender for my mom (an illustrated quote for each month), and I made a mini-notebook also for my mom and a bird calender for my dad (a picture of a bird for each month – I think birds are the things I'm best at drawing). The calenders are kind of classics, so luckily I didn't have to think too much about new things; I'm also not great at thinking of ideas for presents… your ideas are really great! And oh my gosh I can't believe that I didn't remember to say happy holidays to Rora too – I really miss her on the CB 🙁
The present opening has been pretty fun! Not at all conventional, but it makes Christmas last longer. A lot of the presents had barely appeared by Christmas Eve, and most of Christmas was spent talking to family, so we decided to leave most of the presents for the next few days. It's almost impossible to stop once you've started, though 😛
I honestly think classics are better, at least in general. Whoa, it's amazing that we've both read The Vanderbeekers!! (Also, it feels like some books get enormous amounts of attention while others barely get any, even though they might be better and actually better liked by audiences…) Ooh yay, I'm glad it was good 😀 I haven't actually read it yet, but as soon as I do I'll most definitely be up for in-depth discussion :DD (Also possibly live reaction as I go reading it)
I also watched a S&S (abbreviations fOrEvEr :P) movie without watching the book (I don't think it was the 1995 one, though), so yep 🙂
It is very sticky, as in it sticks easily in one's mind… It is a question: what do babies actually understand, and what are their thought processes like before they can talk? Anyway, my music tastes are currently slightly older pop from different countries (the US, Latin countries, Britain), though I don't tend to listen to very modern pop/music. If you ever want Latin pop recs, I'm probably the person to ask >:D Music for younger kids/babies can be really nice too, though – the other day I was listening to "We're Going to Be Friends" by The White Stripes, and it's so calming (though I'm not actually sure if it's for kids or just about kids, and oh dear there are way too many parentheses in this comment).
Ooh, that's great! I was reading some of his essays this summer, and they're interesting – his nonfiction writing style was fairly different from his CofN writing style, but I feel like you can tell that it's the same person. What's the book you're reading about?
My reading is mostly made up of fiction, but once in a while I try a nonfiction book too, and I agree that they can be really good reading; a few weeks (or maybe more like two months – I'm losing track of time helpp) ago I read a book written by a museum guard who worked at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, talking about all his memories from his life there. I posted about it on the CB, so maybe you saw it… if not, be warned that it isn't completely CB-appropriate (though it's nothing awful, just a bit crass in parts) :/
And my location is fictional too! Also, I hope that it hasn't already been used – I can't remember :<

LyricParticipant:D
Mount PireHappy late New Years!! 😀 *throws number confetti XD*
Ooh wonderful! Do you have a tradition of making calendars…? (btw I was confused on how to spell calendar so I looked up “calender” and it’s actually a word for a cloth/paper pressing machine. I shall be doubly confused from now on lol) That’s cool that you’re the best at drawing birds. Do you like birds? I think the thing I’m best at drawing are zentangles, but that was a while ago and my art skills are rather rusty.
That does sound fun! What presents did you unwrap?
Yes, some books definitely get more attention than others! I momentarily forgot you hadn’t read P&P when I suggested a discussion…no pressure about that, then (and if you want we could discuss other books/things) 😀
Partly related, I’ve always mixed up Jane Austen with Jane Eyre (a few chapters in so far. It’s not at all what I expected—in a good way, though)
I have no idea, because I can’t remember what types of thoughts I had when I was a baby…I barely remember the thoughts I had in 7th grade (about the time I joined CB, I think), actually, which makes me sad.
I don’t usually listen to pop music much either (with the exception of Christian Contemporary Music and T. Swift music that Rora plays sometimes). I live partially under a rock…
Ooh cool 😀 I would be interested in some Latin pop recommendations 😀 I probably won't be able to understand the lyrics, though…I learned some Latin before (which I heard is similar to Spanish?) and have been wanting to learn Spanish for a long time, but I'm sort of obligated to learn Chinese first (mainly so I can understand my family when they talk in Chinese), and can't learn both at the same time :/
(yayyyy parentheses!)
(I use parentheses very heavily. They’re quite convenient 😀 )
It’s about different kinds of love, and rather analytical. I’m also losing track of time :/ I’m not good at remembering numbers (like dates) for a few seconds longer than I need them…with the exception of pi because it’s surprisingly rhythmic. I didn’t see the post (or at least, I don’t remember seeing it…for some reason I've mentioned forgetfulness several times…) but the book seems interesting.
Lastly—I think I will “open” another location in the forest (marketplace) so there can be more conversation opportunities for charries, bc the conversation right now has lulled a bit…unless you have another idea?
Also random thought–capital "A"s look like mountains with snow on the top. I rarely see mountains with snow on the top so I'm not sure where I got that association, but I invented a secret code years ago where a snowflake represented the letter A (from time to time I get a small obsession with secret codes. I've only really used the codes a few times, though…they're mostly just for fun) 😀
-
AmethystParticipant:))
sandhills in CalormenYayyyyy more confetti *throws 2s and 0s and 5s* 😛
Yeah, the calendars are pretty much a tradition – I've been making the bird ones since I was about eight or nine, which explains why I'm so good at drawing birds XD I like watching birds from time to time when I have the chance, and so does my dad; they're also just very colorful and pretty. Ooh, I never knew that calenders existed! Aside from the calendars (not calenders lol) I haven't been drawing very much lately either… unfortunately I have an art course in school, which is partly art history this year but partly drawing, so I should really find the time/inspiration to create more art.
Yes, it was fun 😀 I got a mini notebook and a necklace from my grandparents (who love to give me notebooks and necklaces or other jewelry, for which I'm very grateful to them 🙂 ), a calendar (the thing that tells time, not the machine!) for 2025, the headphones!! which I'm actually using at the moment, and I think those were the main things. I also got to talk to my extended family, which was so nice. How was your Christmas?
I'm always up for discussing books! At the moment I'm rereading The Hobbit (which I hadn't remembered as being so… exciting), and I'm about to start David Copperfield by Charles Dickens for school. TH is the only Middle-Earth Tolkien book I've read, shockingly (I also read Roverandom years ago, but that was written specifically for children), but I like it. I don't think it's one of my favorite books, but he was very good at writing as if he were recording mythology, and he also uses the typical old-fashioned British writer's style that I love. Have you ever read it? If not, I think I'd recommend it – it's definitely a classic for a reason. And whoops, I forgot to say the title of the book about the museum guard (!!); it's called All the Beauty in the World, and it's by Patrick Bringley.
Oh dear :0 Well, if they will both be called Jane… I hope Jane Eyre will be good.
There do seem to be similarities between Latin and Spanish (since I know Spanish, I can partially decipher Latin), but they're also different in a lot of ways. Anyway, as far as Latin pop recs are concerned, I'll try not to completely swamp you… My absolute favorite Latin pop song is "Te regalo" by Carlos Baute; it's extremely lyrical (in which case you should like it, lol >:D) and happy. Carlos Baute in general is one of my favorite singers – some of my other favorites of his are "Amarte bien", "Loquitos de amor", "Me faltas tu", "Colgando en tus manos", "Y ahora que", or for some more typical pop ones, "Muy loco", "La cuenta", "Vivo y muero por ti", and "El chisme". Basically all of his songs are great, but these are some of the ones that I like best 🙂 Otherwise, there's a singer called Fonseca who's in more or less the same style, and has songs like "Te mando flores", "Hace tiempo", and "En vivo y en directo". For single songs (and not Singers In General), I like "Berimbau Metalizado" by Ivete Sangalo (I think it's in Portuguese, so I don't understand it myself, but it sounds nice), "Chas! y aparezco a tu lado" by Operacion Triunfo, "Adelante" by Naiara, and I should really stop… Anyway, if you try any of these and like them, I could translate them for you, or you could probably look for translations online?
It's amazing that you're learning Chinese! What's it like?
(Parentheses forever!!! They're lifesavers and I love them :] )
My memory isn't too splendid either :/ Music can really bring back feelings of a certain time, though, which is one of the reasons I love it – if I listened to a song a lot during a certain time period and then moved on, listening to it again is very evocative.
Oh yes, that would be great! I'm sorry I've been taking so very long to post my parts – I will today or tomorrow, if possible.
You're right, they really do :0 It's so clever to use a snowflake to symbolize them! I've never tried secret codes (actually. I did write an alphabet once, but I never used it), but I love inventing languages 😀 How many secret codes have you invented?
-
AmethystParticipantOh, and also, I wanted to say – I love the abstract art that you posted on the Sketchbook thread! It looks so intriguing and professional~

Dragon IslandHi Amethyst! I hope you're doing well! I've been worrying often that some of the new changes I've been reading about in the news are affecting you in some way–I'm not trying to be nosy or pressure you into replying to this paragraph (if you choose not to reply to this entire paragraph, that's fine!), but I really really hope everything works out for you and your family if the changes are affecting you <333
I agree–birds are colorful and pretty! I can't look up at the sky or in trees without hurting my eyes, so I mostly just watch them on the ground (if I'm outside…I stay inside the house too much) I really enjoy watching animals in general–mostly fish and ants. I didn't know they existed either XD I'm taking a creative writing class in school, but haven't been writing much other than that (I've been doing little freewrites here and there, though. Nonsense literature comes most easily lol).
Ooh those sound nice! Especially the headphones! My family hosted a Christmas brunch, which meant a lot of cleaning and eating and listening to everyone talk while feeling bored/nervous and gift opening, and then went to watch a movie afterward.
How is David Copperfield going? YES the Hobbit! (I've never heard of Roverandom. What is it about?) I read it just once (I used to be scared of the cover because it has Gollum on it) and I agree that it's not a pageturner or anything like that, but it is very charming. I remember Bilbo inventing rhymes about the spiders most clearly–couldn't stop lauhing even though I didn't know what the insults meant. Ooh interesting!
Jane Eyre was good–I skimmed over scenery descriptions and I don't know what else but I enjoyed the parts I read 🙂 I just borrowed Emma and Sense and Sensibility from the library 🙂 hopefully I get a chance to read them.
Eeeeee I'll put them on a playlist and check them out (along with lyrics) Tysm 🙂
Learning Chinese is hard, even though I'm learning the simplified/standard/modern version (traditional is much harder). It's really easy to botch the pronounciation so I'm usually quite hesitant to speak it (making a goal to practice more though). The characters are so fun to write–it's easy to confuse them though, so they need to be practiced a lot too. It was probably a while ago, but how was your experience learning Spanish?
I think I get what you mean–I vividly remember listening to a line of commentary about Beethoven while eating a grapefruit with a spoon (have you ever eaten a grapefruit with a spoon?) It wasn't music, but I think it has the same effect. And also now I associate a certain 10 hour video (one of the ones on loop) I watched while making a play analysis with the play I was analyzing.
I tried to invent a language once, for worldbuilding purposes (easier to come up with names lol). It was very fun–I didn't finish the alphabet though, just a bunch of vocab that slowly got longer and more cacophonic XD I've invented 37–but more like 22 or 23 because a handful are borrowed from elsewhere or just a blend that mainly just serves to overcomplicate (I wrote a very ridiculous and impractical one three years ago that turned a 7-letter word into a 38-letter version, then changed the letters to the code family the A-snowflake belongs to, which is probably one of my easiest code families to remember).
Thank you! 🙂 I assure you it's not professional (third or fourth drawing XD and it's still unfinished because it got pushed to the bottom of my priority list), but thanks anyways 🙂

AmethystParticipantBurnt IslandAww, thank you so much for thinking of that – I'm so lucky to have you as a virtual friend <33 Luckily, we're fine, but I have been kind of worried about everything… Hopefully we won't be affected, but the future looks so murky right now, and it's hard to imagine what's coming. I hope you're doing all right in that respect <3
I love watching fish too 😀
David Copperfield is amazing – Dickens is (was?) splendid at building characters and evoking emotion, even though he doesn't use very elevated vocabulary or anything. I think I'd call his style delightful; he intersperses his darker themes with such a Dickensian style of humor, and he writes as if he were talking to you. Roverandom is about a dog who has adventures, and I seem to remember that it was fairly sweet and magical, though it's been years since I read it.
I hope you enjoy Emma! I'd be happy to have live updates, if you feel like it >:D I've had more time to read for the past few weeks, and I finished Every Soul A Star by Wendy Mass, which I utterly recommend. It's something like Wonder, but a bit more writer-ish, if that makes sense. For older stuff, I've been reading Victor Canning's trilogy of The Runaways over the past few months (I read the first one and then waited for a while before reading the second one, which I'm currently in the middle of). The second one is better than the first, and it's slightly slow but also highly good reading, as well as surprisingly unique. I'm also almost finished with a rereading of TVotDT, which is very much Literature and also so familiar to me because of all the times I've read it…
You're welcome! I hope you like them :))
It's so amazing that Chinese has its own alphabet 🙂 Actually, I wonder how our alphabet looks to a Chinese person who doesn't speak English…? Anyway, I never officially learned Spanish, since my parents are able to speak it and I lived in Mexico for a while; I just picked it up along with English, though when I was very little I decided for some mysterious reason that I wanted to think and speak in English instead of Spanish. Since I live in the US now, my Spanish is unfortunately slipping a bit, so I've been working on it; it comes fairly naturally to me, but that's probably since I hear it often.
I always eat grapefruit with a spoon, actually! It seems so much more sensible :} It's so odd how certain things trigger memories…
Woo, turning a 7-letter word into a 38-letter word sounds like such fun 😛

AmethystGuestNarnia :DDLyric *optional tackle hugs* I’ve missed you so much— How’ve you been? How’s everything going? I’m hoping to see you around again soon <3

:DHIII AMETHYST!!!!!
*tackle hugs back*
I’ve also missed you!!
I’m doing good–I’ve been busy with school and busy figuring out how to be less busy with school, as usual, but good.:) Other than that, I’ve been reading (mostly too much news but I’m also reading poetry and proverbs in the Bible, a translated French novel called Old Goriot that has too much description but isn’t boring, and a collection of imaginative short stories for school which might not be CB appropriate because of some curse words), dancing around, singing (just for fun–I know close to nothing of proper singing technique), and writing the short story sometimes (I scheduled it in for to-day–I think that’s an older spelling of today–but not sure if it’s going to happen) Oh–also talking at school a lot more, which is probably good for writing too.
When I wrote this (submitting some days afterward, because I thought I had already submitted it) I was taking a break from a schoolwork assignment that’s been very hard–it’s sort of my fault that it’s hard, because I really really wanted to write a news podcast on genetics, but didn’t want to spend hours scrolling through a lot of terminology-ridden infoXD
Hm, I read A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations 2-3 years ago (or is it 4 eek how did that happen), but I don’t remember much character development. I might re-read GE soon.
I managed to read S&S because it fit into the bag I brought to school, but Emma couldn’t fit so I didn’t have a chance to read it:( Oh, I’ve read Every Soul a Star before! I also read Wendy Mass’s two Candymakers books and A Mango Shaped Space.
Probably squiggles and lines and circuits? I didn’t really pick up Chinese, even though my grandparents would speak it all the time, and after a couple years of learning it in school I can write and read it better than speaking it.
Btw, I’m adding a comment instead of replying because I don’t know if replies are appearing or not.
It’s so great CB’s up again, but I’m sad so many of our emoticons were lost…-
AmethystGuesthelloooo :DDDOoh, I looked up Old Goriot, and it looks good! Very Dickens-y :)) I also sing for fun almost constantly, though I too am probably doing it most unprofessionally… Listening to so many songs should justify it, though, shouldn’t it? (I really listen to music much too often *looks innocent* On the other hand, it’s so inspiring and there’s so much good music out there to listen to, so I don’t think I’ll limit myself anytime soon.)
Oh dearXD It sounds like it will turn out fascinating, though! Good luck:)
Yay! It’s on my summer reading list, along with Pride & Prejudice – if you’d still like, I can flood the thread with live reaction to the latter as I read it :p I just finished reading Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass – I didn’t find it quite as good as Every Soul A Star, but it was still enjoyable.
XDSquiggles and lines is probably very true…
I think replies are appearing – most of the ones I’ve tried have shown up – though they have to be submitted twice, once to get the Cloudflare captcha and once to actually submit it. (Speaking of which, I miss Origami :/ I imagine she’d be saying something cryptic like <hrgll> if she were still about, though) And yeah, it’s sad to have our emoticons gone – the emojis give the thread something of a different vibe. I’m super happy to be able to catch up with you, though :DD

AmethystGuestwith headphones on, naturally :PAlso, very off-topic, but I hate those tiny spiders that not only have too many legs, but insist on getting around by jumping instead of moving slowly like an ordinary being >:/

helloooHi Amethyst!!
*scatters/throws confetti and bookmarks and lantana petals because those are fun to throw* It’s our anniversary:D (I can’t believe I missed the exact day…) I’m so glad to have such a kind, talented, and clever friend like you:D
I also listen to music too much XD There’s almost always something stuck in my head so sometimes it’s hard to focus. But I only listen to uplifting music, so there’s not too much harm in that.
Oh, I’d love that! I’ll probably try to re-read it at the same time:)
What did you do this weekend? I had a 4-day weekend for some reason, so I finished the RP posts, worked on my short story again (technically it’s been a year since I started it, but the first couple of drafts somehow ended up having no story or character development so I just abandoned all of them and started on a new one that barely clings to the idea and is also harder to write), went to an event with friends, learned some macramé, played a card game with my family, read, sang, cleaned, jump-roped, blew bubbles, and did sChOoLwOrK (:/)(finals week(s) is almost here…) I wanted to practice some songs on the piano (there’s this video game called Plants vs. Zombies. I don’t play it, and I don’t like the zombie aspects—they’re more silly than scary but they still scare me—but I like everything else about it, including the sheet music) but I ran out of time.
AAA I also don’t like tiny spiders! They’re better than the really big, really fast ones, though *shudders* At least they stay small. I actually saw three or four yesterday while cleaning my room (which usually gets pushed to the base of my priority list, so I’m very happy about that)
