Lillian seemed afraid. Of people, of what they thought, of everything.

As the feast began, and I ate like I'd never eaten before, she seemed to send longing glances towards a group of second years, blushing and mentally degrading herself whenever she said a word that came out wrong.

She shrunk back into her robe at the sight of bread, muttering "allergic" when I raised my eyebrows questioningly.

I wondered what had happened to make her act this way, but there was too much yummy food to think about anything else.

((Lena, I hope this is okay. If not, then everyone can ignore this post.))

((No, it's great. Well, you know what I mean.))

Stop it. Now. I kept telling myself. Everyone's looking at you strangely. I turned to Keira and said the first thing that came into my mind. "Um, how's the food?"

She smiled. "It's good. I'm, um, sorry you can't have it."

I shrugged. "That's okay. I'm used to it by now. I just... wizard school isn't what I thought it would be like."

"What do you mean?"

"I thought wizards had an answer to everything. Like allergies and shyness and being awkward and scared and - " I stopped and stared at one of the many candles illuminating the Great Hall. "I'm scared of candles."

Keira almost laughed, then stopped herself. "Candles? Why?"

"What if someone knocks one over? There could be a fire. Or something like that." I was blushing so hard it felt like my cheeks were on fire.

A sniffing sound interrupted us. I looked over at Albus.

"Poor Albus," Keira said. "I guess he wanted to be in his brother's House."

"Yeah, I guess so," I said.

Soon the feast was over, and it was time to go up to our dormitories. One of the prefects was bustling around, calling, 'First year Hufflepuffs over here! First year Hufflepuffs follow me!'

I ran up to him. Keira and Albus were in line behind him. "Excuse me, what's the new password?"

" 'Cage,' " he said.

I blinked. "Cage?"

He nodded. "Remember that and you'll be fine."

And so I started over to the portrait hole. "Cage!" I said to the picture of an eagle guarding our dormitory.

The eagle wouldn't budge.

"Cage!" I said.

It still didn't.

"Look, move, please!" I said. "Cage!"

Some of the other Hufflepuffs came up behind me. "Cage!" one of them said, and the eagle swung open.

"Cage!" another one said. It swung open again.

I tried again. "Cage!"

It didn't budge. By now Keira and Albus and all the rest of the Hufflepuffs had gone inside, and I was left out, staring stupidly at the eagle. "Cage?"

A few Slytherins walked by, including the Selwyn girl. They giggled at the sight of me, standing outside my dormitory with the eagle refusing to move aside for me.

I was setting down my bags when I noticed that Lillian was nowhere to be found.

"Lillian?" I called, poking my head around a corner. "Has anyone seen Lillian?"

"Who?" one girl said, smirking, but became concerned once my frown deepened. "Wait, you're serious? Well, let's find her."

I searched high and low, peering under beds and behind trunks, even sticking my head up the fireplace, and coming down full of soot.

Wow, I thought, grimacing, it would really be ironic if something happened to her, causing truth in all those fears.

"Password trouble?" I asked tauntingly.

The girl turned very red and mumbled incoherently.

"I guess eagles don't like Mudbloods any more than we do," commented Oliver, managing to sound offhand.

The girl whirled around. She looked angry.

"Why don't you go pick on someone your own size, for once?" she demanded.

"You know..." I said, pretending to mull it over. "As fun as that sounds..." I whipped out my wand and yanked her feet out from under her before she had a chance to defend herself. She hung, dazed, from her ankle. Drusilla snickered behind me.

I flicked my wand again, and the girl began to float down the corridor.

"Where are you taking me?" she asked, squirming furiously.

"To the kitchens," I replied calmly. "We saw you cringing away from your food -- allergies?"

The girl's eyes widened.

"Anyway," I continued, "we figured you looked malnourished. A problem the house-elves will doubtless be overjoyed to correct."

Albus shrank farther and farther into his seat as the feast went on. I wasn't the only one stealing glances and snickering, though. The back of his neck was scarlet.

"Look at him," muttered Oliver, as the main course shifted to desert. I help myself to a chocolate cake.

"He looks like a cherry," commented Xander.

Sally stared in shock at Albus. She had been sure that he would be in Gryfindor. She looked, slack jawed, down the bench at James. He was staring staight ahead, his face impassive and distant.

Before she had recovered from her shock, the feast had begun, and Sally momentarily forgot her surprise in the rush the excellent food always brought. She was too busy filling her stomach with the steaming hot stew and bread to notice anything going on around her.

Presently Lisa whispered softly into Sally's ear. "James has eaten hardly anything!" She exclaimed.

Sally looked down the bench at him again. He was still staring fixedly ahead.

"He must be really upset!" She said.

Sally craned her head to look at Albus sitting at the Hufflepuff table. He looked pretty upset. His nose and cheeks were beet-red and he was sitting alone in a corner of the table, looking down at his sneakers.

Sally felt sorry for him. The only one in his family to be in a different house. And it had been so expected of him to be in Gryfindor. Sally looked witheringly at the group of slytherins laughing at their table. She knew she would feel horrible if she were separated from her family and the laughing stock of a table of slimes.
