THE ELEMENTI CHRONICLES BOOK I: THE STONE OF SERENITY

Chapter I
___{:}___

The moonlight shone on the Lake's deep, fuchsia waters. Conifer trees fringed it, thickening into foreboding woods. The Lake was the center of the Faimón Forest, and it contained a great amount of magic. Its surface was smooth, undisturbed. All seemed well, yet it was not. A wild cry broke the peaceful silence. A shape tumbled down a path through the trees. Another shape hared after the first, who had a jagged gash down its side. "Tell me where it is and we can save a lot of trouble," the second animal growled. "Never! Never in my life!" the first cried, practically wailing. "Then I guess the information will die with you!" The second figure struck the first, shoving it into the Lake. After a while, its head bobbed up, gasping for air. "We. . . . won't. . . tell you! You'll never. . . find. . . . it. . . " The second animal chuckled quietly to itself. "And who's going to stop me?" It padded silently away into the trees.
__________
Sheena opened her eyes. Squinting through the thick water, she searched for the surface. She couldn't tell which way was which in the murky fuchsia water of the Lake, heavy with magic. It was the one body of water that Aquinas leopards couldn't swim skillfully in. There! A pinpoint of moonlight shone through the water. Sheena kicked strongly towards it, propelling herself through the Lake to that shaft of light. She could feel her breath slipping away. Just as she thought she would black out, her muzzle broke the surface. Sheena gasped for air, the gash Narwhal had given her stinging. She paddled for the shore, tail boosting her forward. The leopard reached the sandy beach and heaved herself up onto it. She shook her royal blue pelt out, shuddering.
Sheena knew that the Knowledge Protector would be proud. She would not reveal the Stone's location to anyone, especially not Narwhal, even if it cost her her life. The Aquai Leopards were the guardians of the Stone of Serenity and were part of the Elementi Leopards, along with the Ignis, Ventus, Aether, and Terra Leopards. Each kept a Stone of Harmony, like the Honesty Stone and the Joy Stone.
Each cult of Leopards selected one of their kind to keep all of said cult's lore, the Knowledge Protector. The tales and secrets of each cult were passed down through generations of Protectors. Sheena was training as the Apprentice Protector for her cult.
In addition to the Leopards in the five cults, there were Leopards that abandoned their birth cult and lived as enemies of the Elementi known as Rogues. Rogues banded together, and Narwhal lead his group, which he called the Rens. Narwhal and his group wanted to get everyone in Leovie who opposed the Stones of Harmony to join him, their goal being to capture the Stones, or destroy them, once and for all. Sheena didn't know what would happen if all balance in Leovie was destroyed, and she didn't really want to find out.
Lying on the shore now, gasping for breath, Sheena recounted the day she'd been selected for Apprenticeship by the Knowledge Protector, Ciel. . . .

Maybe the Aether guy will chase Sheena and track her down and bring her to her father, assuming he will kill her for trespassing. But Sheena blurts out that he's her dad and... and... I don't know. Just an idea.

I decided that continuing this will be my NaNoWriMo project this year. Starting November 1st, expect a new post every day or one huge one each Saturday.

~~

Chapter Six? [Could someone keeping track of chapter numbers please tell me if this is correct? As it is, I'm going to divide and edit down some chapters, because they're longer than a trail of ants from a drop of honey, not that it's relevant]

~~

The scent of pine hung heavy around Sheena, blocking out all other sensations. Her paws stung from pounding over brambles and undergrowth, and her heart was beating hard. Something about her encounter with the Aether had set her fur on end, and it wasn't just because he belonged to a different Element. The dark blue leopard smoothed her fur with a paw, breathing deeply.

But she wasn't safe yet. She was still on Aether land, Narwhal was still loose, and the whole future of the Elementi rested on her shoulders. Sheena knew, with growing dread, that ever since she had gone to the meeting of Elementi, she would never be safe again.

~~

When the sun sank low beyond the horizon, Sheena was once more among sycamores. She breathed in their familiar scent, grateful to be away from the Aether. Not for the first time, she wondered what was happening back home. Were they searching for Xiang's murderer?

It's not my home anymore, she reminded herself. Her peaceful life seemed so far away, so long ago. Her heart ached thinking about it, but she shook off the pain and focused on the task ahead.

Hunger cramps seized her body and her belly rumbled. She hadn't eaten since the previous day, on the Marsh. Distracted by hunger, Sheena went off to catch a fish.

It didn't take her long to find a stream. She sat by the fast-flowing water, waiting patiently for the silver glint of a fish. With practiced claws, she flicked one out of the water, raching out her jaws to catch it. Her jaws snapped shut on its writhing body and she dropped it at her paws. Bending down, she began to eat her catch.

Its rich flavor flooded her mouth, dulling her hunger. In two ravenous bites, the fish was gone. Sheena swiped her tongue over herwhiskers, finally satisfied.

I plan on writing more later today, so stick around!

Scylla, in November, please try to post more than once a week. One HUGE comment once a week may really slow us down. We'd much prefer shorter amounts every day. Or at least maybe break it into thirds and post on three different days of the week? Thank you.

I wasn't really serious about that, and I agree that it would be better if it were distributed. I wouldn't want to give you that much work in one day--the "huge" comment would be about 7,000 words! Is 1,000 per day okay? Or is that still too large? Because I don't need to post all my progress during NaNo in November; I can spread it out a little more.

I guess 1,000 per day is OK. But if everyone who reads CB did that, then there would be a slowdown. But that's unlikely, I think. We always do the best we can, but sometimes other things take priority.

There were also two typos in the last paragraph and second to last paragraph: "raching" is supposed to be "reaching" and "herwhiskers" is "her whiskers." Sorry about that, guys!

I'm walking in circles, guys. I have no idea what to write. I think Sheena will track Narwhal to the lake, find nothing, and go on a quest, but I'm not sure that I want this to be a quest book. The other option is that she finds Narwhal within the next chapter, and something happens between them, but I don't know which to choose.

Honestly, just talking about my uncertainties with you is opening so many new doors. I can't guarantee that I'll post writing tomorrow, because I'll be working on plot timelines (which I won't post). Any consolation or suggestion would be helpful. Thanks, you all.

Hm... How about Sheena goes out of the lepoard's territory entirely. Like, she goes into undiscovered land. And then she finds out something sinester about the cults...

I think I want to keep in inside their boundaries. Or maybe their territory is a huge forest divided into fifths that has no end, but everyone's land is equal. And they're not cults anymore, just Elementi.

Wow, pretty! You made that? Cool! Also, has anyone else noticed that I'm always the last to post on this thread? I post, then nobody else does for several days. It's a bit weird.

It's because I never post here during the week. I made an overly complex web of thoughts that only I can understand of the many plot possibilities. I don't know if it's enough to keep me busy during NaNo.
