Hey everyone! <3

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

CBer Book Club!
Hey everyone! <3...

Hey everyone! <3 I know this isn't a very active realm of the CB, but I had a really cool idea. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a book club on the CB! I joined a book club in March, and it's been awesome! I realised that book clubs are super fun when you don't have to do a bunch of school assignment around it and read something like Johnny Tremain or Lord of the Flies. Nothing against classic literature, but my brain can only take so much of the Bard's work.

Anyway, for our book club we could choose what books we want to read, set reading deadlines, and discuss the book on the CB! We could also do small writing challenges and stuff, but I don't want it to be like school. I've been trying to read more during quarintine, and I hope other people are too!

If you are interested in joining, please fill out this sheet. There's no limit, but I hope we can get at least 4 or 5 people. :D

The Land of Stories series is a good one to read if you like fairy tale adaptations. I don't know whether you've read it before or not, but it's about siblings who fall into the fairy tale world/reality

Ok! Our most popular genre was fantasy, followed by realistic fiction and historical fiction. I've picked a book from each of those genres (and I threw in a wildcard!)

For each book, please rank your interest on a scale of 1 (not interested, only if I had to) to 5 (I would LOVE to read this!)

FANTASY ~ Keeper of the Lost Cities (Book 1) by Shannon Messanger

Ok, so I don't really know/read many fantasy books, but I read this a while back and I thought it was good! A lot of people have read this series, so I don't know if this would be a good one to read. If you have a good fantasy book recommendation, please post it!!

This book follows a 12 year old girl named Sophie Foster with telepathic abilities. She meets a mysterious boy named Fitz, who leads her to a fantastical society of elves with magic powers and mythical creatures. This book is reminiscent of Harry Potter, and shares many similar tropes (chosen one, magical world hidden from humans, main character was hidden in the real world, magic school). This book is quite long, but not very challenging to read.

HISTORICAL FICTION ~ The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

I believe AW recommended this book, and I love this book too! I don't really remember what happens, but I will do my best to recap.

This book follows 10 year old Ada and her brother, as they are sent away from London to escape World War II. They are sent to live with a woman named Susan Smith, who live in the countryside. Ada has clubfoot, a condition that gives her a walking handicap. This book is all about friendship, family, and perserverance. I think people who enjoyed Esperanza Rising or Inside Out & Back Again would like reading this book.

REALISTIC FICTION ~ The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart

I've never heard of this book before Cynthia recommended it, but it looks really good! This blurb is going to be based off the goodreads description.

This book follows a young girl, Coyote, and her father, Rodeo, as they go on a cross country adventure in a schoolbus. Coyote lost her mom and two sisters in a car crash. Coyote devises a plan to trick her dad into travelling 3,600 miles back to their old home in Washington so she can uncover a memory box she buried with her family. Along the way, they meet a myriad of misfit travellers. I think people who enjoyed The Penderwicks, Walk Two Moons, and Sisters would like this book.

GRAPHIC NOVEL ~ Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson

This is my all time favorite graphic novel, and I thought I'd just add it because it's a really good realistic fiction story too! The art and story is so fun, and it's a fast read.

This book follows Astrid, a 12 year old girl who signs up for a roller derby camp. (Roller derby is a sport played on roller skates! I can't really explain it, but if you read the book you will understand it). When her best friend Nicole signs up for ballet camp instead, she is left all alone. Astrid suffers through a horrible first day at camp, but ultimately makes a new friend and gains support from the other girls on the team. This also addresses her strained relationship with her mom, and how they end up fixing it. This is such an awesome book about girl power, friendship, and perseverance. If you like Raina Telgemier's books (Smile, Sisters, Drama) then you will LOVE this book!!

Again, for each book, please rank your interest on a scale of 1 (not interested, only if I had to) to 5 (I would LOVE to read this!)

Ex: Harry Potter: 5, Johnny Tremain: 1, The Hobbit: 3

Keeper of the Lost Cities: 4. It sounds good! It does seem like a popular book, though, so it might be hard to get my hands on it.

The War that Saved my Life: 5. I gave this book to my friend for her birthday once, and she loved it, but I never read it myself. I would love to read this one.

The Remarkable Journey of of Coyote Sunrise: 4. I've never heard of this book, but it sounds great!! Seems like a fun read.

Roller Girl: 3. I onlyy gave this one a three because I've already read it, but it was a great book! So if we end up choosing it, I will join the discussion and not complain.

I can't wait to start!!!!!!!!!!

Keeper of the Lost Citys - 3.5

I've already read the rest of these, and they are all really good! I will be happy with whatever we decide to read.

The war that saved my life - 5

I read this a couple of years ago, so it would be my top pick to reread.

The remarkable journey of Coyote Sunrise - 1

This was a GREAT book, but I just read it and I hate rereading things.

Roller Girl - 4

I read this a long time ago, so it would be fine to reread.

This is a super great idea!

How long it takes you to finish a book: That entirely depends on a number of things: how much time I have to be reading, how interested I am in the book / how good it is, and of course how long it is. I would say that if it's average for all of these things, it would take me like three or four days.

Books I'd be interested in reading: Well, my friend has been telling me to read The Maze Runner and Divergent for a long time, so those are some that are on my To Be Read list, but I am good with pretty much anything.

Do you have access to a library? Kindle? Online books?: Normally I have access to a very nice school library and in the summer I go to my public library a lot, but right now my source of books is an adorable local bookstore which is open because more stuff is opening where I am.

Oh my gosh, all my answers are so long! Oops!

I have been meaning to read this one! I think... 4.
HISTORICAL FICTION ~ The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
I would LOVE to read this book! I read it once and it was good, but it would be cool to discuss it. Also, I just got the second book and haven't started it yet, so it would be a nice refresher!
5 for that one.
REALISTIC FICTION ~ The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart
Sounds interesting. I don't want to read it as much as some of the others, though, so 3.
GRAPHIC NOVEL ~ Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
Ooh, this is a good one. I have read it but I think it was a while ago. I like graphic novels, and this is a good one! I would say 4 for this one as well.
(sorry that was so long - I couldn't resist talking about the ones I've read :P)
