Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Fablehaven
Fablehaven is a...

Fablehaven is a bizarre fantasy series written by Brandon Mull.  It's mostly about two kids, Kendra and Seth, whose grandfather runs a fairy preserve. Eventually, they discover a plot to free ancient demos from a prison and many characters try to stop them. There are 4 books now, and one coming soon. The four out now are Fablehaven, Rise of the Evening Star, Grip of the Shadow Plague, and Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary. There are manymany characters and I'm going to post a breif cast list, with my awesomeness ratings 1 to 10 (1 is lowest). (Koffee reads these books, and can vouch for their awesomeness.)

Chalize, Raxtus, etc: Dragons. Average RAW: 5

Oh, Gavin turned evil? That's fun... I have yet to read the last book.

Anyhoo...

Yes, whenever I think of Fablehaven, I tend to recall a conversation something like this...:

Reuben: "Drink the milk!"
Koffee: "I DRANK THE MILK!"
Both: *make inside jokes about things like giant cows*
Me, in my early Chatterbox days: *wanders over to thread* *is confused* "Umm... what?"
Both: "Just drink the milk!"
Me: *has nervous breakdown* "I'm confused!"

The main reason I read the books being that I had no clue what you guys were talking about and wanted to enlighten myself...

On characters: Kendra is a brat, though thankfully has not entered Sabrina Grimm stage just yet, Seth is pretty cool, Vanessa is easily the best character. And I sorta liked Patton, and other minor characters who didn't get enough page time... the satyrs, for instance. *shrug*

But yes, the series has been pretty okay so far. I mean, they're not like the greatest books ever written, and they are candy, but they're pretty okay. No thanks to the MC, course, but still...

Oh, sorry. It was not my intent ti give away *spoilers* gavin turning evil. *end spoilers*

And that conversation was my first real Chatterbox conversation, and it established a precedent of being weird to the point of repelling people.

Yeah, you should really read Book 4. It's possibly the best yet, because it doesn't treat Seth like an idiot. Not enough Warren, though.

Oh, don't worry about the spoiling. Gives me an incentive to read it. ;)

Though I'm gradually accruing ginormous fines on all the library books I haven't returned. /guiltiness I need to work on that...

Strange thing being that at first the bizarre discussion between you and Koffee actually somewhat terrified *me* to the point of being scared off (okay, give me a break, fifth grade made me really paranoid...). Now, though, the two of us tend to do that quite a bit... *cough* /more guiltiness...

And the title of the fourth one is... um... something about a dragon sanctuary? Or was that the third?

Yes, book 4 is Secrets of a Sragon Sanctuary.

And the scaring-people-off-thing...you're not the only one with /guiltiness. I had a letter of apology to the general Chatterbox planned out, but I never got around to writing it. I realized I might be cultivating an image of meanness here, and I do not want to do that.

Ah, yes. This was a thread about Fablehaven. To everyone (probably just me and ML) reading this, who is your favorite character? Mine are Warren and Seth.

No, cultivating images of meanness is not good. I mean, I don't perceive anyone on here as mean... but then just today my friend Kathy informed me I'm a very insensitive person (she managed to do this politely). So take that as you will...

Also, cookies for calling me "ML," considering that's what people often call me outside the CB. I wondered if anyone would on here...

On favourite characters: I liked Vanessa. I know what you mean about Warren; he definitely beats his brother, anyhow. And Seth is up there.

Trying to get Maggie to read the Fablehaven books but she claims they sound "boring." *forlorn sigh* Better start off small, I s'pose, maybe the Spiderwick thingys will make her like fantasy...

Vanessa is definitely one of the better characters, and is up there among the best in Book 4. Now that I think about it, Fablehaven is a real change for me, because I like *good* characters best. In Warriors, for example, the only character I really like is Ashfur, who tries to kill JF&co. Or maybe I'm just weird...

Re: ML. I was a bit tired of typing out MAryLizW, so I abbreviated. And, lo and behold, I got cookies!

Re: image of meanness. I am not the king of sensitivity (or even the court jester). If anyone here knwe me in RL, they'd find me very annoying. I don't perceive anyone here as mean, though some arguements are heated. Sometimes I see a post that makes me want to pull my hair out, and 1 in 4 times I realized I posted it a month or two ago.

Re: sisters refusing to read books you suggest: My sister won't read anything I say is good since I tried to get her to read Warriors a few years ago.

Oh yeah, Fablehaven. The last book ended with an irritating cliffhanger.

Re: good characters: The thing is, they're always too good and turn out as Stus or Sues. Harry, Eragon, Percy... funny thing is they're all Chosen Ones too. Fantasy writers have got to get over the whole Chosen One concept...

And I must say that while I agree about you being slightly weird, I probably would not think you're annoying in RL. Who knows, maybe someday we'll actually meet in RL... huh, that would be weird. o.O (But we both do live in NJ... /stalkerism)

Joking...

Re: sisters: She's finishing up the Ramona series right now. Rejected PJatO because it was "too scary"... I mean, this from the child who's read all seven HPs. PJatO is nothing, *nothing* compared to HP. *glares at Maggie*

...As I've said before, we are wonderful with the whole deviation thing.

Ooh! Other peopel have read these books! I agree with everything you've said ((typed)) . The whole "Chosen One" thing is very annoying. o.O

@ Mary: Maggie has read all HPs, and now she's reading Beverly Cleary? Sorry. They're just very different....

@ Mathilda: re: Maggie: I know, right? It's very annoying. :P Different indeed, also... I think the reason she likes Beverly Cleary, though, is because, you know, there's Beezus, and Maggie compares me to Beezus. *rolls eyes* These eight-year-olds...

A LIST OF CHOSEN ONES:

1. Harry Potter. Yes, yes, the books are great, but Harry gets a liiittle annoying... the whole CO thing makes it worse.

2. Bilbo Baggins. I have no issues with him, but still.

3. Eragon. Don't get me started.

4. Percy Jackson. He's okay.

5. Ender Wiggin. To quote Adina: "The Chosen One must Use His Gift to Bestow Peace upon the Ream." Gotta love the inane capslock... ;)

6. Bastian Balthazer Bux. Possibly one of my favourite COs.

7. Gregor the Overlander. *sobs* the last book...

8. Actually, sorta Kendra and Seth. They're the ones who have to take over running Fablehaven when the grandparents die.

9. Otto Malpense, whom I hold in great contempt. Though I liked the series.

10. More or less any contemporary fantasy protagonist.

Notice the lack of females?

@ Mary: I'd compare my little sister to the 5-year-old Ramona. *shakes head* Little sisters...

# 2 - I think Frodo more than Bilbo, actually.

# 4 - I agree. I like Ananbeth a lot better, but even she is slightly that way.

# 9 - Yeah. Great books, but still, Otto is really annoying. Nero is awesome, though <3

Johnathan Harker is kind of one...

By the way, my favorite characters are Warren, Vannesa, and the satyrs....

submitted by Mathilda
(October 4, 2009 - 4:55 pm)

Ohh, you only have /one/ sister. Lucky. ;)

Frodo too. I had these crazy fines on the LotR bokos, so I had to return them to the library before I could finish them, but I've read The Hobbit twice, so that's why I put Bilbo as opposed to Frodo...

Oh yes, Nero is so woooonderful. *fangirling* <3*

Jonathan Harker... h'm. I don't know if I'd say just he was, though, because it was sort of like a *group* of Chosen Ones... which I guess is sort of self-contradictory, but yes, I definitely know what you mean.

*On a really off-topic note, d'you two think that Wing should've stayed dead? ((yes, yes, yes...)) :/

Really off-topic note: Definitely. Would've made the books a bit better. :I

(June 1, 2010 - 6:54 pm)

1. Harry Potter.  Agreed, but he's still awesome.

2. Bilbo Baggins. It is more Frodo, but how is he "chosen"?

3. Eragon. Oy vey.

4. Percy Jackson. He's irksome, but still...

5. Ender Wiggin. I only read the 1st one, but the character was very irritating.

6. Bastian Balthazer Bux.He got so annoying that I couln's finish it.

8. Kendra and Seth.More Kendra, with the whole fairykind thing.

9. Otto Malpense. Yeah, but the series makes up for his chosenness

Remember what this thread was about? Now it's the CO rant. Oh well, it's still fun.
