Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

THE ASK ADMIN

THE ASK ADMIN THREAD!!!!!!

Ok, so there are tons of threads made to ask Admin a particular question. I thought: why doesn't someone just make ONE thread for ALL the questions? So, here it is!

My first question: Can't the Admins make some sort of search thing inside this website so that we can look for a certain thread? Because I was going to revive several, and they got stuck somewhere between the page they were on and the first page. I don't really feel like looking through all the pages again...

=^..^=

Our Webmaster knows that a Search function has been requested, but we are a small staff with many other things to do to publish all our magazines and maintain all our Web sites. It's unlikely we'll get to a Search engine anytime soon, if ever. I think a few years ago a Chatterboxer figured out how to search via Google with Cricket Chatterbox plus a specific theme in the search field. I don't know if that would still work now because there are many more threads on Chatterbox, and many with similar themes, that there were two years ago. I'm sorry we can't be more encouraging about this.

Admins, have you ever considered installing SpellCheck on the forums? A lot of times I type things wrong and they don't show up as being misspelled. Example: Imm a purdy widel platipuse. (Keep the misspellings, Admins--it's for emphasis.) Just think--with SpellCheck, you wouldn't have to spend so much time correcting erroneous (sp?) posts. Wait, can you even install SpellCheck? How would that work? Never mind, just skip all of the above. This is the point:

Admins, have you ever considered installing SpellCheck on the forums?

Admin: Typos are the spice of life! But really, we leave that up to you. If you like "creative" spelling, have at it. If you don't, proofread!

How about we can have SpellCheck as an option, so, if the person typing is intentionally misspelling or typing words that don't exist, they can turn it off, if they aren't, they can turn it on?

Admin: We'll ask the tech people if that's possible.

Remember that thing I said about possibly having a list of approved sites to link to? Have you reached a conclusion on that? If not, when should I check back about it?

Uhhh... Is there an answer to that question? Admins??

Rodney says bern. Ahhhh!!!! HOT HOT HOT!!!!!

We don't see previous comments with new ones. Is this the question you mean:

"Does your parent signing that they didn't help you with it mean you aren't allowed to ask for feedback?"

Yes, it means that no one should give you feedback. Reread it yourself and send us your own best work. You should also know that we don't necessarily eliminate an entry for a few misspelled words or other grammatical errors. While an entry with a lot of errors would likely not be a Cricket League winner, we do value ideas, creativity, and how well each entry develops the theme of the contest.

No, actually, my previous comments relating to the matter were about the thing where I asked if we could have a list of sites okay to link to, but I didn't notice that since the answer, you had edited the Admin's comment on the comment again from "we'll see" to:

"We'd love to open the web up to you guys, but unfortunately, we don't have the time to check every site. We'll consider making a list of safe book and writing sites sometime soon. "

I never thought to look back at the original comment for the final answer.

How did you think of Cricket?

Are you talking about the name? The name Cricket came from A Day of Pleasure (by Isaac Bashevis Singer): “There was a tile stove in Shosha’s apartment behind which there lived a cricket. It chirped the nights through all winter long.  I imagined that the cricket was telling a story that would never end.”

Then-editor Marriane Carus wanted to create a magazine of literature for children and she got the name from that passage. I think the original name ideas were Troubadour and Tailiesin, but these weren't used.

Oh, and the name Spider came from the idea that spiders weave webs as authors weavew stories.

Hi Admins!

I was thinking about entering the contest and I wondered if you're supposed to put the moral at the end or embed it. And does your parent signing that they didn't help you with it mean you aren't allowed to ask for feedback?

Thanks!

Admin: It's conventional for a moral to go at the end of a story, but do it however you want! Wow us! I think it's OK if a parent gives you feedback, but they shouldn't change anything (even grammar). Another way to say that: a parent or adult or friend should never touch the pen or keyboard, and you shouldn't use their exact words. The actual work should be all you.

What other work do you do for the magazines (besides administerating this website?)

We help read, select, and edit material for all the bug magazines, edit, proofread, review and judge contest entries, (Cricket League and Spider's Corner), answer letters, review art sketches, correspond with authors, and more.

Admin, I posted a thread and I can't find it, not even by clicking on "Submitted by" to arrange threads by age. Was it deleted for some reason? I'm pretty sure I put it in Pudding's Place...

Yes, we deleted it. We generally don't post references to other websites because we can't control their content. We make a very few exceptions for reputable sites we keep a careful eye on (e.g. nano). I hope you will understand.

Hey Admin, would you let us link to a website if we provided evidence that the website is safe?

I'm sorry, JDD, but we don't have time to review such a site.

Hi Admin, I posted a re-introduction thread but I can't find it anywhere, even in the back pages. Do you know what happened to it?

No idea, sorry. It could be anywhere.

Seriously? You Admin dudes deleted my threads on Oz Fanfic and links for you to take notes of? Okay, I get the links thing, but... WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH OZ FANFICTION???????????

Actually, those two new thread submissions have not been deleted; they are still in the queue being considered. We have lots of other work besides Chatterbox. The Oz submission is very very long, and we primarily post things that are submitted by the people who wrote them only. We don't know if the author would want his work posted here.
