So glad someone made this thread!

I wrote the paragraph above that was submitted by "A Vegetarian". I am in fact a vegetarian and my siblings are pescatarians. I agree completely with you Cockleburr, and so happy there are vegetarian's who agree with me. Animals should definitely be treated with respect. You don't have to be a vegan-or a vegetarian for that matter-but just buying things that were not from poor, unhappy creatures is the first step.

Yeah, Jwyn!

I found a cool catchphrase about vegetarianism.

”Animals are my friends. I don’t eat my friends!”

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do admire the people who are. See, I love meat. I just really, really like it, and I don't think I have the willpower to not eat meat for the rest of my life. I respect the people who can, because if you like meat even a little less than I do, it must be really hard to go off it, but you're doing it for a good cause. I certainly think that meat-eating in itself is not wrong; predator vs prey isn't only seen in humans. However, I do think that treating animals in such inhumane conditions is wrong -- you don't see lions corraling zebras into cramped warehouses, do you? I almost always eat free-range foods, though (as far as I know), so I do hope I'm doing at least a little bit to help this issue, even if I'm still eating meat.

I agree with you, St. Owl! To me, it's not eating meat that's unethical, but the way animals are treated in the dairy and meat industry is just horrible.

I am not a vegetarian, but three of my close friends are! I like meat, but don't agree with mass production and mistreatment of animals. In my family, we do our best to get meat from a local farm, where all the animals are free range, or at least organic meat from the grocery store, because some of the conditions animals are put in are not okay.

I totally agree with everyone saying that most animals raised for food are treated terribly. They deserve respect and a good life, not crowded, filthy, containment (this is probably going too much on religion beliefs). My family gets our meat and eggs from a local farmer who is genuinely concerned about the animal's health (grass-raised, free-range, non GMO, etc.) which in turn affects the consumer's health.

We follow the Weston Price Diet, and my mom always makes sure we eat a lot of vegetables. I guess I should've elaborated on what I meant by "not healthy" and "not natural". Veganism, going without any animal products, is definitely not good for you. Vegetarianism is a fine option for some people, but it can be hard to get all of the neccesary vitamins and proteins.

Doctor Who?, I've never heard of pescaterians, that's really cool though.

I'm not a vegetarian, I like meat WAY too much. I agree that slaughter houses are pretty bad, and you should be careful on what you eat. I live on a farm, and get fresh eggs everyday. We have sheep and are breeding them, we'll eat the little rams if we get any. Sometimes we order meat chicks and when they get fat enough we'll slaughter them and eat them. They're much better than the store bought kind and are delicious because they get sun and fresh air.

There are different types of vegetarians:

  • Lacto-ovo-vegetarians, also known as just vegetarian, eat both dairy products and eggs; this is the most common type of vegetarian diet.
  • Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy products but avoid eggs.
  • Ovo-vegetarian. Eats eggs but not dairy products.
  • Vegans do not eat dairy products, eggs, or any other products which are derived from animals.
Just wanted to clarify that.

I swear I just posted on a vegetarian thread on CaC, and now the thread is gone!

Well... My views.

I think it's fine to eat animals. It's amazing if you don't, but this is nature, the circle of life, etc. What I think is wrong is animal mistreatment, and killing for no reason, like sport. Judaism has a special required way of killing animals for food. It's actually shown to hurt the animal less and make it die it quicker.

And if someone doesn't eat animals, what about plants? They've got some kind of emotions, too. I would cite the experiments here, but I just did on that other thread and I am way too lazy.

Please read this.

I am a dairy farmer. And you are breaking my heart. I don't know about other  farm animals (although I expect they're not as bad as they're accused of) but more than 95 percent of dairy farms in the USA are family owned and operated.  They aren't the big factories you think they are. Our farm has over 150 cows, and I still know every one of them by name.

We love our cows, and not just us, but all farmers. It seems so unfair, we work so hard every day to make sure the cows have plenty to eat and drink and are comfortable, and then people turn around and say we mistreat them and abuse them. We get up at 5:00 and don't go to bed till 11:30. I remember times when we've worked straight through the night so the cows would be comfortable. When the electric goes out our generator powers the barn, we use candles in the house. We never go on vacation, someone has to watch the farm.

We sell the bull calves for meat and we know that they are part of the circle of life, if you will. We care for their mom's, and they provide us with food.

I know you don't mean harm, and I'm not blaming you, I just had to tell someone.

If you have any questions about farms or cows please, please ask me. I want you to know.

Thank you so much for telling us that. I had no idea. It's different in Australia, though, but that's beside the point. It's really good the way you look after your animals. That's how it should be. Thank you so much.
