Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Choose your own

Choose your own adventure, zombie apocalypse version. Because I've somehow become ever so slightly obsessed with zombies.

You are in Alaska. It is summer. Suddenly, a zombie walks out from behind a tree and moans at you. Do you try to fight it, stop in your tracks, or run away?

IRL?

...

I don't know if I'm allowed to answer that.

And besides! It's an apocalypse. Anyone questions us shoot them.

Your reaction to seeing one zombie is "welp, looks like it's the end of the world".

Okay.

You are unarmed, but for the sake of argument, let's say you find your way to an army base, and immediately set to taking out the guards with sweet talk and karate. As soon as you make a move on one, the other shoots you in the back and you die. Congratulations. Would you like to try again?

Ugh. Sure, I'll try again. One hundred percent sure I know why you chose to shoot me in the back.

If you think it's because you decided you wanted to do something that I thought wouldn't work, then yes, you're right. But anyway.

I go meet up with Rogue in the medicinal place. Strength in numbers, you know?

Wait, uh. I was kind of assuming you were on your own. I suppose you can go with Rogue if they're okay with it, although the other way is simpler...

Yeah, I like to find loopholes. :)

If you'd rather we're in separate situations, I'd go to the nearest library, barricade myself in a corner, and read every book I can find about zombies.

Ooh, that sounds fun. All right, then, you run back into town and into the first library you see. The librarian points you to where you want to go, and you get ahold of some good zombie novels, pull some bookshelves around you, and begin your research. Just as someone comes around to tell you that you're not really allowed to rearrange the bookshelves, you hear the telltale sound of screams and zombic moaning. Do you run away somehow, hide in your book bunker, rally the library-goers or try to fight the undead on your own?

Rally the library-goers! I make an inspiring speech that goes something like this:

"Yo! There are zombies coming to kill us all and we have to hide! Or, I suppose, we could fight them. I believe garlic does the trick. Or maybe that's for vampires? In any case, we must do something!"

The library-goers look back at you, startled and still without direction. One of them begins to reply to you, but before they can, someone else screams, and moments later, the door bursts open and zombies begin to enter. A couple of people try throwing books, which is ineffective but gives a couple others some time to run away. Not everyone is so lucky, though, and about three people go down. Most of the zombies fall on them, both literally and figuratively, and the remaining humans scatter. You see some of them start running up a nearby flight of stairs. What do you do?

I'm hoping this library has a conference room with a lock, because I'm going to go hide in the conference room with whichever library-goers manage to make it in with me before I slam and lock the door and barricade it with every piece of furniture in the room.

Neat. I don't go to a lot of libraries (shocking, I know), so I'm not sure I know exactly what you're talking about, but let's say you find something that's more or less what you're looking for. You run in and throw your arm into the door, which flies shut with a satisfying bang. I guess you lock it, though I'm not sure how, and look around for survivors and things to use for a barricade.

The room is full of tables, maybe one of them with computers on it, and comfortable-looking chairs, along with one more survivor, who you signal to help you drag over a table and some of the chairs.

You also notice that there's a window in this room--big enough for you to get through, but not by much, and it's closed and covered by a curtain.

The screaming and moaning continue outside, but it seems that the dead don't know you're in here, at least for now.

What do you do?

Can I... like... kick it to slow it down and then run away?

You can try.

Yeah, okay. You kick the zombie in the shins, throwing off its balance for a moment, which is all you need to hightail it out of there. The zombie eventually regains its balance, and begins to shuffle slowly after you, but you're already pretty far away, and soon enough it's out of sight. Do you go home, out into the wilderness, or somewhere else?

I go home to gather essentials and log onto the Chatterbox to see if anyone else is in a similar situation. Out of the things I grab at my house, I make sure to snag two extra phone chargers and duct tape.
