Languages Chat Thread!!

Talk about what you love about languages here!  It can be foreign languages, it can be "made-up" languages like Quenya, it could be what you love about English.  You can talk about what languages you know, what parts of languages are the hardest for you (the hardest part for me is remembering English words for learning Japanese- like I can never remember what a "clause" is, or (in)direct objects and sentence subjects and KSBGYKDBSGKSK) and what helps you be more efficient, and tricks you use to help you remember stuff, what languages you want to learn in the future

So yeah!

Languages amirite

Ha, yeah!  I'm definitely trying to stock up more on ways I can speak/listen, since those are my weakest points.  And-- WHAT.

NOOOOOOO WAY

YOU'RE SO LUCKY OH MY GOSH WOW-- THREE LANGUAGES?????

NO MATH CLASSES?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

WHAT

THAT'S SINCERELY AMAZING

I go to an art school, so that'll probably take up most of my classes when in high school and I think my school only offers Spanish and French, anyway... for now I am but a tiny seventh grader and I don't have any say in what classes I take sobs school's the biggest barrier in my language-learning endeavors.  I just don't have timeeeeeeeeee

Thanks for the response, Jaybells!  I appreciate it a lot:D

Honestly, Jaybells and everyone else, you amaze me. Learning all those languages- !

And no math into the deal. *Dreamy face* I wish.

It'll be a tough schedule to fit, but WHO CARES, IT'S AWESOME THANKS!

OML yes!!! I finished the second part just now and yesss, go for it!!!

Warning, it is much more difficult to learn Gaelic in my opinion, purely because there are so few speakers in Ireland, and it's technically no-one's first language after centuries of British rule and subjugation... Native American ones also sound epic, even though the fact that so few people exist who know them and study them proficiently is gonna likely be a barrier again. :/ May you be successful in your endeavours, nonetheless!

ALSO CONLANGS???(referring to the fictional, but incredibly thorough languages of Tolkien) Wanna join me on a fabulous adventure of languages that we make ourselves???? I'm gonna try to calm down for now, BUT MATE THAT IS SO EXCITING!!!

Artifexian does a bunch of stuff on word-building, which might help some if you're interested! :)

*scrolls to the next page*

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE

(in a happy way, not an annoyed way, obviously!  I'm super excited!)

Yeah, it makes me sad when a language has almost been pushed out of existence, since each one is so special and important!  I googled a Native American language from my state, and it said, "there are no fully-fluent speakers alive."  That just made me so upset:(

Also HAHAHAH YES I MOST CERTAINLY WOULD AND CALMNESS IS TOTALLY OPTIONAL RIGHT NOW AND THANK YOUUUU

I hadn't heard of Artifexian till now, but I googled it and WOW:0

Thanks again<3

Lol I love you so much, mate (platonically, of course)! It's so amazing to have another person this into languages to talk to! XD

Speaking of Conlang stuff; Hex, Flamarestii, Eclipse and I have been doing some world-building for a collab-story, but I've sorta gotten handed the language role, mostly 'cause the others have limited experience with languages and are less confident about making their own new one. If you think you'd be interested, wanna tag along and help with the language-building? It'd be great to have you!

Here's the link if you do wanna check it out (also yes there's spoilers 'cause we basically were planning everything here after moving in from the Prompt Thread, whoops-):

http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/507974

I'll fill you in more specifically if you do pop in (feel free to ask questions/for clarification at any point), or you could just skim all the stuff we have in there. It's kinda a lot though...

If you don't want to, no pressure, of course! You just seem like you'd be a really good candidate/partner with your enthusiasm for and avid interest in language(s)!

*screeches* EEEE Thank you Jaybells:D:D:D:D it means a lot!! About joining, I'd love to, but I have committment issues and wouldn't want to slow you guys down... I might, though, right now I'm in school supposed to be doing work so I can't really do anything now:/

No worries, you'd always be welcome to chip in at any point! Even if it's not a regular thing, or requiring aa high level of commitment, any help or feedback is much appreciated! :)

(The whole team's all got our own things to deal with too and only post when we can, so it wouldn't be a bother at all if you took time to brainstorm and/or focus on your outside life every now and then. That said, don't feel pressured to join if you do want to focus on other things now. We understand!)

Anyway, I hope you're not inundated too much with school-stuff, although it sounds like there might be quite a bit going on. Good luck, and stay healthy! ^w^

I am learning one language.

That language is Ukranian.

On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, putting troops at the border. It attacked Kyiv, and then went to Lviv recently. Many people were forced to leave their homes, and the war has been described as the largest humanitarian conflict since World War 2. I am learning two things to protest this action: the Ukranian language, and its national song.

I speak English of course, but also a few more!

- Latin: Everyone at my school is required to take it. I don't really mind; it's pretty easy and even fun but i-stems and third declension adjectives honestly scare me. Most of my friends don't like Latin though. They'll regret it when they have to repeat a year >:)

- Morse code: I don't really know much, but I know more than your average person. I can say hello, though!

- Spanish. Not yet, but next year, hopefully!

My friend and I have a "language," but it's basically just us taking English and spelling it in the most complicated way possible. For example, in English one might say "do you want to watch a show tonight." but we would say "dew eu wont tew wotch ey schoe tewnite."  it's ridiculous but it's a fun way to spice up a regular text

Hi guys!

I'm currently learning Spanish in school. I also know how to speak Farsi (Persian). I tried to learn German a few summers ago, but I onh reall know a few words.

I speak Spanish, although not as well as I ought to considering I'm part Mexican, and I'm making up a language! Of course, I've been doing it for years and still haven't gotten that far, but at least I can have VERY simple conversations. It's useful for talking about things that are secret (my sister knows some of it, so she can talk it with me). And I have just begun to learn French.

And my CAPTCHA says yadme! That must mean something in CAPTCHA-language, which it would be really useful to learn but who knows how I'll actually do that ;)
