Chrome Loth RP!

The world of Chrome Loth: A world divided by six factions, by six species. The land is divided into thirds while the sky is halved, with the Aer-Loth Clan the messenger between them.

On the land there are three clans: the Uisce-Loth Clan of the seas, the Lasair-Loth Clan of the fire wastes, and the Cloch-Loth Clan of the mountains.

In the sky there are two clans: the Solas-Loth Clan of the angels and the Dorcha-Loth Clan of the demons.

Finally, the Aer-Loth Clan lives on the highest peaks and acts as a bridge between the earth and sky.

Once every thirteen thousand years, a child is born in each clan with the powers of the clan's element in them.

Uisce-Loth=Water

Lasair-Loth=Fire

Cloch-Loth=Earth

Aer-Loth=Air

Solas-Loth=Light

Dorcha-Loth=Shadow

The Uisce-Loth Clan's Child is named Lyata. (I am RPing as Lyata). She is held in high regard as a sign that the Uisce-Loth Clan is entering a new age of wisdom. She has been training in combat in secret for many years and wishes to become the High Scholar, the ruler of the Uisce-Loth Clan. The Uisce-Loth Clan can all breathe underwater and have webbed fingers, plus are bioluminescent in dark water. The Uisce-Loth Clan is highly intellectual and is a democracy-monarchy combo.

The Lasair-Loth Clan is surrounded my nothing but magma and flame; a flat wasteland of obsidian, where farmers who can find good land must defend it ferociously. The Lasair-Loth peoples are immune to very high heat. The Lasair-Loth Clan's Child may not even yet be aware of his or her abilities. The Lasair-Loth Clan is incredibly dangerous, with only one large city with a massive crime rate. The Lasair-Loth is an anarchy ruled by an underground mafia.

The Cloch-Loth Clan is in the mountains, where forests and climates of all types rule. Cloch-Loth Clan rituals are steeped in ancient tradition, and many believe that the Cloch-Loth Clan was the first Clan ever created. Cloch-Loth peoples are naturally strong. The Cloch-Loth Clan is merely a collection of tribes ruled by the largest, the Alpha Tribe.

The Aer-Loth Clan is held in high regard by all. All Aer-Loth Clan members have wings. These wings are the same color as their flesh and look somewhat batlike. Aer-Loth Clan members are incredibly pompous, and flaunt their wealth and power. Their Child is worshipped as a god or goddess. Many Aer-Loth Clan members get tattoos of ancient tribal symbols that glow in the light of the moon. The Aer-Loth Clan is a monarchy, and the ruling family is called the Vashya-Comra family.

The Solas-Loth Clan is rarely seen. They represent righteousness and goodness. All of them have white feathered wings, except the Child, who has black wings. The Solas-Loth hate the Dorcha-Loth with great passion. The Solas-Loth also do not age as long as they stay in their home of white cloud, which means that they are rarely seen. The Solas-Loth is a monarchy, and the ruling family is the Vola-Saa

The Dorcha-Loth Clan is known for its raids on other clans. They represent evil. All of them are varying shades of red with bat-like wings to match and horns the color of their hair. The only exception is their Child, whose skin is violet and has horns made of lapis lazuli. The Dorcha-Loth are a monarchy, with the ruling family known as the Krok-Shakar.

No. He's just not present. What Mistress Taiyaa knows, but is refusing to admit at the moment, is that no major decision can be made without the Cloch-Loth. She can talk all she likes, she can try to win over other delegates to her point of view, but nothing will actually get done without the input of all six clans. Xylo is still very much in. (Sorry if it seemed otherwise!)

Solas-Loth fly towards the remaining Children. "We need to get you out of here soon..." They say. "We have matters to discuss without your prescense." One turns to me and adresses me coldly. "Do you have wings, It?" My face flushes angrily. "I am not an it." I say. "And no, I do not." He grins. "Hope you're not afraid of heights, it." And he grabs me by the shoulders and takes flight.

It's exhilarating and scary at the same time....and a sense that something's wrong fills me.

Then I realize...none of the other Children are being lifted OR flying. "Hey!" I yell. "Where are you taking me!!!???" I ask. "To get rid of you." He whispers. "W-what!?" I realize..his eyes..are red.

And then..he drops me.

DO YOU THINK YOU CAN TOP ME AND SPIT IN MY EYE? / DO YOU THINK YOU CAN TOP ME AND LEAVE ME TO DI-I-IE?!

~Kaili~

"We need to get you out of here soon. We have matters to discuss without your presence."

Lyata tenses. I tense in return, folding my arms behind my back so my hands are on my dagger hilts, ready to pull them at a moment's notice. There's something...off...about this. Why would the Solas-Loth, who've been all about clan unity thus far, seek to control all the Children like this at the risk of alienating the other clans?

Then I notice two things simultaneously. The Princess and Prince-Consort are alone on their dais, huddled close to each other with wing feathers absolutely flat, not puffed out in the slightest- an indication of fear.

And the Solas-Loth guard right next to me and Lyata has eyes that glow faintly red.

I forgo daggers in favor of my telescoping quarterstaff, brought from the Great Tower during the week-long recess for just this sort of situation. I don't usually carry it, but now that there's been trouble it wasn't hard to guess that there'd be more. As soon as I whisk the unassuming metal cylinder off the back of my belt, I press the button and it springs out to its full five-foot length. I'm in defensive stance with one end of the staff held in front of Lyata before the Possessed Solas-Loth can blink.

He stiffens. The crimson glow in his eyes sparks brighter. He hisses something in some unintelligible language that makes my skin crawl just hearing it - "Soi Khak-Slaga! Jhai pansosi ah shraal!" - and makes a grab for Lyata. My staff takes him straight in the side of his head; he crumples to the ground, unconscious, as battle erupts all around us. My Cadre-mates draw their own staffs and the Guardsmen their netcasters as one.

I whirl at Lyata's side, looking for other threats. I sweep another Possessed Solas-Loth's feet out from under her; Lyata shoots a jet of ice blue light at a third, freezing his wings to keep him from flying off with the Lasair-Loth Child.

"Remla!" Lyata shrieks, out of the blue.

Wait, what?

Wingbeats from above - a higher scream than Lyata's - the Dorcha-Loth child falls from where a Solas-Loth dropped her, way up near the ceiling - I don't give it a second thought but dive to intercept her, breaking her fall - we go down hard, my head cracks against the floor, pain explodes over my spine, stars spin in my vision - please Goddess and spirits please don't let me black out - rolling across the floor, carried by the force of our combined momentum -

We come to a stop, halfway across the enormous circular chamber. The Dorcha-Loth child uncurls herself, bruised but alive. I try to sit up, which makes me see double and my skull feel like it's going to split open. I try to think, but it's as if my brain has been stuffed with algae. Concussion, if not open wound. Not good.

Dimly, I become aware of brown- and green-garbed people streaming into the room, rocks flying from slingshots, Kami and Vashi covering us as Lyata helps Remla up. The black spots across my vision spread rapidly. I just manage to croak out, "The Horde knows - get the Children - meet - elsewhere - " before the blackness steals my sight entirely, and I know no more.

I gasp from the fall. A few of the Aer-Loth surround us. "Quickly! The fith pillar! Push it!" One calls. I nod, trying to support Kaili. We run to the fith pillar and I smash my hand against it..and the ground opens up to reveal a secret passage. I run into it, followed by the other children, and smash my hand against the pillar again to close it.
"Don't you have wings?" One rudely asks. "I do," I admit. "But they don't do anything really except glide, and I wasn't in a good position." I take a rock and slice two holes in the back of my dress, and pull my Ice-Blue wings out. They gasp. "Is Kaili okay?" Someone asks. "We need a healer!" And they're all talking at once...

I crouch towards the wall of the tunnel, barely managing to read (I can only read the names of the Clans, and nothing else) a crudely inscribed word, "Clotch Loth." Of course we're underground! "Guys," I say. "This way to the Cloch-Loth."

So I decided that the Cloch-Loth Child's special characteristic is antlers.

And here's where Xylo jumps in.

Xylo~ I'm meditating at the border for no known reason, my head rebelliously filled with thoughts of Ariel (yes, I know that meditating is being in the moment and having a clear head; my mom's a yoga teacher), when I hear voices. A group of people: an Uisce-Loth, about five Aer-Loth, and the-- wait, is that the Dorcha-Loth Child? And all the other Children?-- trudge out of a tunnel and into the forest. I narrow my eyes. What are they doing here? As they approach, one of the Aer-Loth points at me. "Look, it's the Cloch-Loth Child! What's he doing here?"

I pad up to them. "I'd like to ask you the same."

The Dorcha-Loth Child looks at me with wide eyes. "Battle... Cloch-Loth.... Council.... Pillars.... Need help," she gasps.

"Slow down. I'll take you to the Chief, and you can explain there."

~~

And I'm so confused about what's happening that I can't write anymore.

(June 28, 2016 - 4:40 pm)

You're not the only one who's confused. I'll try to reconcile everything with this post; if I get anything wrong, tell me.

~Kaili~

I come to slowly. My head still feels like a huge lump of burning eelgrass, but at least the pain isn't quite so bad as-

Wait- what am I comparing this to? Goddess and spirits, what in the world happened?!

As it turns out, I can hardly think past the polar-bear fluff in my brain, so I fall back on my first instinct instead: observation. Opening eyes is no use, blurry and dizzying and nonsensical, so I shut them again. Sound: rough cloth rustling, quiet footsteps close by, stone tapping against stone, small fire crackling, steam hissing, silence otherwise. Touch: nearly uncomfortable warmth - we Uisce-Loth like the cold - thick cloth over lower body, something soft underneath me, a fabric something wrapped around my throbbing head. Smell: wood smoke, unfamiliar herbs, something musty like caves-

-a whiff of Mistress' perfume?

As if triggered by the thought of Mistress, everything comes rushing back like a tsunami. The emergency clanmeet - the Children - the Dorcha-Loth making trouble - the Possessed - the first fight - the week of waiting - talk of Quests - the second fight - diving to catch the Dorcha-Loth Child, hitting my head on the floor, pain, but - but -

I am Cadre. I fear no vengeance, nor destitution, nor any sort of pain. I am secure in my duty to Scholar and clan, and none can take that duty from me, save only Death.

Duty. My duty. Where is Mistress? Where is Lyata? Where are the other Children? What's happened to them? I am Cadre, I am secure in my duty, none can take that duty from me, certainly not a mere head wound! Stars! I should not have been out of action this long! In fact, I fancy I can already hear Mistress and Kami scolding me: alright, Kaili, that's enough lazing about, time to get up and face the world...

I struggle my way to a semblance of verticality, prying open my eyes and letting out an involuntary groan. Immediately three hands push me back down onto the- bed, yes, it's apparently a bed. Only one of them is webbed. "Hush, brave one, you need to rest awhile longer," says a matronly and unfamiliar voice; "Kaili, take a break and that's an order," says Mistress, sitting right by my side, so close I wonder how I didn't know she was here before.

"Mistress?" I breathe, unable to get my voice louder than a whisper. "How long have I been-"

"Only half a day," the unfamiliar voice replies. "I am impressed. The wound was not light."

"Who- who are you?"

"A healer of the Cloch-Loth clan. My name is Sianma. I would say more, but I think your lady here is dying for the chance."

Mistress swallows hard. "We're with the Cloch-Loth right now. At one of their Enclaves- they're like whole towns kept secret in the middle of the woods, I've never seen anything like it! The Cloch-Loth showed up in the middle of the battle and helped us escape, 'us' being a few Aer-Loth nobles, all the Children, your Cadre-fellows, and myself. The last I saw, the Lasair-Loth, the Dorcha-Loth, and the remaining Aer-Loth were holding their own, but the Princess and Prince-Consort...Goddess, I hope they're alright. Kami is decoying for me right now. Seizi wanted to, but I wouldn't let her; Kami's the best decoy I have, what with Panji back home and you out of action. Yes, you're out of action, Kaili," she says, forestalling my retort with a raise of her hand. "And we need the best right now. I sent Dasai home to tell the Council of the Wise what's happened, but I'm not expecting a reply- the Cloch-Loth don't want any outsiders knowing the way back here. Barring magic, we're stranded."

"How are the - the Children? How's - how's Remla?"

"She'll be fine, thanks to you. Nothing time and a couple bruise poultices won't fix. The other Children are alright, though the Cloch-Loth boy's pretty confused, Remla's pretty scared, Lyata is constantly worrying about her, and I don't think the Lasair-Loth boy trusts anybody. I don't blame him." Mistress sighs, running a hand through her Cadre-style looped braids. "It's getting harder and harder to trust people nowadays. I don't like it."

This is Mistress at her most vulnerable, the Mistress hardly anyone ever sees. This is Mistress in Cadre battle uniform instead of Scholarly regalia, free of all the burdens and concerns and responsibilities that come with ruling a clan, alone with her best friend. Abruptly, her webbed hand clasps mine, squeezing so hard her knuckles turn white. She rocks silently in her chair, thinking Goddess-knows-what awful thoughts about the future.

Sianma the healer takes the hint and finds somewhere else to be.

When the first stress-induced tear drips down Mistress' face, I don't say a word, just lie there and hold her hand. She doesn't say anything either. Even crying, even alone like this, Mistress hasn't lost her sense of dignity; the crying shows as tears and a very slight shake in her shoulders, nothing more. No sound, not even a gasp for breath. The tears dry up quickly.

"Mistress-" I begin, but she cuts me off.

"Kaili. There's no need for the formalities anymore. Call me Phiri, like the others do. All that's happened in the last few days- the world is changing. We may all be at war soon. You, me, the other clans, all of us. If we manage to stop the Nameless One, at the end of the day it's going to be magic that does it. The Children's magic. I'm no magister, no more than you. We're equals now, you understand?"

I nod, unable to get anything out of my mouth. Mistress digs around in her belt pouches for a handkerchief, blows her nose on it, then takes a deep centering breath and stands up. "Sundown was quite a while ago. The Cloch-Loth already sent people back up to the Fortress of Meeting under cover of darkness to see what became of the other clans. Knowing them, they've probably run for their respective realms. It may be weeks before the clanmeet can reconvene. In the meantime, you can bet the Children will be talking about their Quest." Mistress - no, Phiri - places her hand on my shoulder, almost like a benediction. "My offer to let you go with them still stands, if you've recuperated before they leave. They need someone who can fight at an elite level, do disguises, run interference, make a plan. Lyata's good, but she's not Cadre good. She doesn't have your experience with the world. I have matters to attend to with Kami, but I'll come see you if and when I can. May the stars watch over you, my friend."

She takes her leave.

Lyata~

The Children and I sit in silence. The Cloch-Loth's home is beautiful, though dry and somewhat unpleasant.

Remla-or Girl-clutches my arm, rocking back and forth slowly. Ariel and Xylo glace at each other; perhaps they are in-

No, impossible.

One of the Cadre, Kaili, is speaking with Mistress Taiyaa. Kailii's head was injured saving Remla/Girl, and she had been unconcious.

The Cloch-Loth territory grew dark quickly. I splashed water on myself to activate my bioluminescent markings. The Children gasped quietly.

"Beautiful," a hoarse voice said, "I'll love to use your skin for a lantern."

The Children stood and backed away. A Possessed Cloch-Loth rose out of the darkness, obsidian scythe gleaming in my bioluminescence, eldritch and demonic.
