The Sea's Song

Chatterbox: Inkwell

The Sea's Song

The Sea's Song

September’s (very late) CBversary RP!!

~~~
Cambria is a flourishing port city, full of life, laughter, and magic. For a city built from the ashes of a war only months ago, it is remarkable how much it’s grown and developed. And it’s also remarkable how quickly it’s grown, though no one questions the magic.
Your characters were children when the city rose. And they are barely grown when the city falls.
An inescapable darkness has risen. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, an idea unheeded by the founders of Cambria. Too much magic calls forth too much darkness. But what’s done is done, and their only hope now is to journey beyond the land across the perilous sea, in an attempt to save the people they have doomed.
The journey is not for the faint of heart.
The Lottery is the last thing they give you, a system enchanted to find the bravest, the strongest, the smartest, only the best to sail across the Deep and find salvation.
~~~~~

Rules and Information that you will NEED to know (PLEASE READ THEM ALL):

  • There are 14 spots. Reservations are accepted, but you MUST post your charrie within a week of you reserving that spot or I’ll give it to someone else
  • This will start after I have at least 7 characters
  • I’d love a cast of both males and females, which brings up an important point
  • CHARACTERS!!!! I would love if we had a ton of diversity, so I’m accepting literally anything, especially POC (People of Color) and LGBTQ+ (@ADMINS, sorry, just wanted to make sure you saw this if you’re not allowing this, please delete the part where it says LGBTQ+, so no one gets confused, thanks!!) NOTE: I will be looking over your characters and okaying them.
  • The time period is a fantasy-medival, think Throne of Glass, Six of Crows, A Darker Shade of Magic, or if you have no idea what I’m talking about, just think of Pirates of the Caribbean or something in terms of clothing and technology
  • NO OP CHARACTERS PLEASE, THANK YOU!
  • Password: marshmallow fluff
  • A note on magic: If you choose to give your characters magic, it does not mean that they can summon winds, control the ocean, or anything big like that. The magic in this world comes from a sort of stronghold thingy, so it can be mined, but not everyone is compatible with the magic, meaning that it is very picky and may possibly reject your character
  • I might be a tad bit harsh on your character, but remember, it’ll help with your character building!
  • Aaaaand I think that’s it, I hope you read it, and without further ado. . .

~Olin

I don’t remember much of my past, but I can remember the first time I saw it. It was just a passing glance, but had I known what it meant, I would've run in the opposite direction, away from Cambria and taken my chances living in the forest.

I slid across the tile roof, stumbling a little as I landed in the alley. In front of me, golden light spilled from the Autumnal Equinox Festival, painting the cobblestones a warm orange. A savory smell wafted around me, taking hold of my thoughts. I was stepping towards the booth which had trios of steaming dumplings on its display table when I felt a cold prickle on the back of my neck. Turing, I saw the shadows condensing behind me, twisting in thin tendrils of darkness. Spooked, I pushed through the mass of people clothed in traditional robes that looked like leaves changing colors and stopped, all thoughts of the thing in the alley driven from my mind. Orange, red, and yellow Chinese lanterns hung from roofs, swaying gently in the breeze made by the masses of people rushing between stalls, haggling over the price of wares, and laughing together. I immediately zeroed in on one aspect of my surroundings: The purses hanging off the arms of some of the women. Slipping my dagger out of its sheath and holding it under my cloak, I walked over to a stall selling ornately wrought masks, figuring anyone who could afford one of these pieces could afford to lose some money. I strolled behind the lady in the front of the short queue.

  “I’ll give you three gold coins, but thats more than it’s worth.” She said.

“My lady, there’s more gold in the mask itself than what you’re offering me,” replied the mask maker, a short man with a close cropped black beard, “I’ll give it to you for fifteen, and pray my wife doesn’t find out, or she’ll wring my neck for selling it for such a bargain.”

I didn’t stay to listen to rest of the debate, instead slicing quickly through the bead straps of the woman’s purse and disappearing back into the crowd, and looking for the dumpling booth. I sidled up to it just as the prospective mask-buyer noticed her sudden lack of money. I had hoped for a bit more haggling before she checked for her purse. I bought some food and, trying to look as nonchalant as I could, bit into it. Having finished my meal, I tucked the purse into my pocket, feeling the reassuring weight of coins, and jogged over to the temple of Tallia, which was being expanded. Having scaled the scaffolding, I stood on the half-build roof and admired the view, stretching out over the roofs and the docks to the seemingly endless sea. I turned and ran off across the rooftops

---Asimi---

“You said how much, exactly?”

“Five silver. Ingots, to be precise.” The child couldn’t have been more than eight years of age, but he stood smirking at them with unnerving superiority.

“I know, ingots.” Darian Blusworth tossed her matted brown hair, as if she could shake some of the exasperation from her voice. “What I meant to say was, are you out of your mind?! Why do you think we would pay you five silver just for a chance to ride in that dinghy of your’s?”

“She’s not a dinghy!” He gestured wildly at the dilapidated-looking rowboat behind him. “This, for your information, is the HMS Dracon, the sturdiest of her kind!”

“I’ll say,” muttered Asimi Fakhouri as he watched the hunk of rotting wood sink an inch deeper into the oily-grey waves. His patience was starting to wear thin as a mage’s veil. Finally, he stepped around a harassed-looking Dari and held up his hand.

“Look, Mundi. We have been halfway around the entire harbour looking for a boat,” Asimi growled through gritted teeth.

“I dunno, you divers are awfully convenient, what with the blight and all.” Mundi blew a feathery-blond bang off his forehead. “You’re one of our best sources of income.”

Asimi sighed. “How about this- one silver, and a pick at whatever we bring up. One thing, mind you, but an honest pick.” He ignored the warning look Dari was sending him.

“You must be joking,” said Mundi in a bored voice, but there was a light behind his eyes now. It was the hope of a kid who hadn’t seen excitement in weeks...months…

“Just think,” said Asimi, “Golden necklaces, glittering jewels, ruby-inlaid blurstones…”

“I know all of that stuff doesn’t exist, you know,” sighed Mundi, “but I’m on bread right now.” He shot a glance at Dari. “One silver?”

She grudgingly slapped it into his hand. “Deal.”

“Alrighty then! Welcome aboard the HMS Dracon!”

“More like the HMS Dungheap,” groused Dari under her breath as she and Asimi stepped off the deck.

********************************

The sky was overcast. The sky was always overcast, a wooly blanket of tightly-knit grey clouds that acted as a looking glass for the choppy surf below. Asimi tried to remember the last time he’d seen a blue sky, but the only memories he could conjure up were of the desert, and those days were behind him now. He wished, silently, that it would rain for once, although the soil in Cambria was little more than powder these days. A good storm would most likely wash it all away.

“Hey.” Dari’s voice roused him from his reverie. “You know you put too much at stake on our dives, right?” Her tone was low.

Asimi looked away. “Don’t worry. I’ll find something, I promise. I bet there’s something good down there this time!” But the truth of her statement hit home in ways Asimi was sure Dari didn’t know.

She didn’t reply. Asimi got the feeling that she wasn’t exactly angry, just...perturbed. “I mean it,” he added on lamely, but that didn’t lighten the mood.

Once they’d reached the drop point, Mundi stood back as Asimi attached several well-worn weights to his belt, securing them to a series of metal clips he knew by heart. Dari raised her eyebrows. “I take it you’re going first, then?”

“Mmm-hmm. If that’s ok, I mean.” He crouched carefully at the edge of the boat, and stared into the deep. It stared back.

“Well, get on with it the-” But he had already taken his breath and whispered his silent prayer to Tallis, jumping before he got a chance to think too much, and the resulting splash drowned out the rest of her words, leaving only the fading world and a twist of guilt in his stomach.

----------------------------

Alrighty! That's posted. It will be continued in a later post. I will also post Asimi's flashback soon. Sorry for the wait. Top! Poke! Nudge!

Sorry, I don't really understand what the list is for. Could you please explain? Are we supposed to RP in that order about being called?

submitted by Applejaguar, age !!, New York
(July 21, 2017 - 5:31 pm)

The list is so that when we RP, we aren't confused. During the Choosing, our charries will all be called, so the list is deciding the order. We can post in any order, but we want to make sure we all have the same important details in our posts.
