Heroes of Zelkova

Chatterbox: Inkwell

Heroes of Zelkova

Heroes of Zelkova RP

In the not too distant future, a fantasy many children and adults alike had only dreamed about has become a reality somewhere far off in the multiverse. Imagine a world almost identical to ours: The people there call it Zelkova. They speak the same language, eat the same food, do the same things as us Earthlings. We were almost identical. Were.

On the fateful day of April 16th, 2035: More than 50% of the human population on Zelkova seemingly developed some sort of strange superpower overnight. Old and young, men and women, overwhelmingly strong powers and completely pointless ones, all over the world.

To put a lid on the ensuing chaos, the governments of Zelkova put forth new laws regarding these powers, which began to be called "gifts" by people around the world. New institutions were put in place. New utilities. New organizations. The world had to adapt to the new gifts bestowed unto them by some supernatural force. And they did.

June, 2040: The world has become a supernatural society. A majority of the population has adapted to a strange "gift" they recieved one day, and a new generation will soon prove whether these gifts will pass on or not. Many are living their childhood dream. Not all is well in Zelkova, however. Much of the "giftless" population vehemently protest against the special treatment of the gifted. Many gifted individuals turned to the shadows rather than the light, using their gifts to make crime all the more dangerous. The goverments of the world can't keep the peace on their own. That's why a special few gifted individuals, heroes, have stepped up to defend against the worlds evil. Heroics have become a full-time government supported occupation. Heroic academies have sprouted up all over Zelkova, helping aspiring young teens to hone their gifts and learn what it means to be a hero.

You all will be first years at the massive and high-tech RGAZ (The Royal Gifted Academy of Zelkova), the most popular and well respected Hero Academy in all of Zelkova. All will have different reasons for attending, but all share a common goal: becoming a hero. With pressure high and evil lurking just around the corner, who will have what it takes?

(Ignore the alphabetical order thing, I realized that only made it less interesting! And also, @Shy Peacock, you think you write too much? Watch this.)
Reed~
And thus began our year at RGAZ, moving a giant concrete block. I would say it wasn't all that creative, but it was actually the perfect challenge for a bunch of teenage kids. I mean, who wouldn't be intimidated by a giant concrete block? I sure was.
Mr. Redpool clicked his pen, scanning the 20 names on his clipboard like he was deciding who to execute. Finally, the training began. The first one up was a guy named Karl Yurina. He scoffed at Mr. Redpool, like he was an apprentice challenging the master. His shirt barely fit as he walked, which was probably because of his gift, which was revealed just a moment later.
Karl took a deep breath and started pushing the block across the room with brute force, his insane amount of muscle flexing with each step. Wow, a super-strength gift this early? What a meathead. I scanned the rest of the class out of curiosity, but surprisingly, there was nobody who stood out too much. I sighed, partly out of nervousness, and partly out of disappointment. I needed a plan, fast. Maybe I could use one finger at a time? No, that wouldn't be enough... Maybe I could muffle a full blast by facing my back towards the block? No, I'd break my spine if I tried that,
As I thought, my plan-making was interrupted by a sudden uproar from the whole class. A black-haired girl had seemed to move the block not even 10 seconds after I last looked up. The entire floor was covered in ice, and the girl teleported back to our side of the room as soon as I realized what had happened.
"Nicely done, Rune," announced a content-looking Mr. Redpool. No way, that was her? Rune Hyperkill, who was the current #1 in the entire first-year RGAZ class. Or so the rumors said. I had heard about her over the summer, but I didn't imagine she could move the block this effortlessly. I began to panic. If she was in the same class as me, how was I supposed to compete? C'mon Reed, think... think of something, anything...
"Hi. It's Reed, right?" A brown-haired girl had suddenly appeared at my side. She caught me so off guard, I almost jumped at the question.
"Uh, yeah. Who are you?" I reply hastily. Getting a better look at her, this girl was kind of freaking me out. Her eyes almost looked metallic (Although, I couldn’t talk), and she seemed like she didn't even want to be talking in the first place, like she had some malicious ulterior motive.
"I'm Alynah. I, uh, I think I can help you out with... this," she explains. The challenge?
"Okay," I respond hesitantly. I was well aware I would probably regret that decision, but I was desperate at this point. "But how can you help me?"
Alynah explains her gift, how she can transfer and manipulate energy. I might've been more eager to cooperate her, but this girl was giving me bad vibes. She almost sounded like a telemarketer trying to convince me to buy some useless product.
"I think, correct me if I'm wrong, but I, I think that your gift lets you destroy but not move the block?" Her revelation caught me off guard. Had she been watching me or something?
"N-no, you're right. But how did you know? Was I that obvious?"
"Mm-hm, and I think my gift could let me act like a, um, like a funnel.” A funnel... that almost sounded like it might work.
"You'd seriously do that?"
"If you use your gift again when it's my turn, so that I can funnel it again to move my concrete block, then yes, I'll do it for you." She gives me a rebellious look. Geez, I almost thought she was being friendly for a second.
"Are we even allowed to do this? “I ask.
"Well, they did say everything in this room was fair game. So, what do you say?"
I hesitantly agree. I didn't really have any other options at this point, plus I was going to have to cooperate with Alynah eventually. I begin to ponder possible plans, but I don't even get one word to Alynah.
"Reed Rickson!" I gulp and nod at Alynah. I'm praying to every god out there that this girl isn't stupid. I approach my lane, stretching slowly as I go. 50% should be just enough. I fold my left hand over my right, the block looming over me. I take a deep breath. Here goes nothing.
I swing my arms around, blasting a wave from my right fingers. Alynah steps forward to suck the blast into her left arm like a vacuum, shooting it back out again from her right in a concentrated beam. It hit the block like a hurricane, sending it hurdling towards the far wall. The block touches down only a couple meters before the wall, bouncing of the metal and sliding to a halt, just over the target area, I internally celebrate the close victory, but not before Mr. Redpool steps forward to interrupt. Uh-oh.

Rune~

I'm glad the attention has shifted to another kid. I think his name is Reed. He seems to be hyperventilating a little bit as Georgio steps forward. Reed's eyes sweep the room, pleading for someone to help. I see Georgio's clipboard and get Reed's attention, mouthing 'You're going to be okay!' Georgio stops between Reed and the girl who helped him, resting a big hand on each of their shoulders.

"You two will be partners in concentrated tests from now on." Georgio smiles kindly. "What that means is that, if the task is small range, you two will be working together." The color of Reed's face returns to normal. Then Georgio turns to me. "Could you please unfreeze the floor?" Georgio getsures to the frozen arena. I step forward and bend down to touch the ice. It disappeares as soon as I make contact.

"Thank you, Rune." I just nod and head back to the bleachers. Bryan finds me.

"That was INCREDIBLE, Rune. I'm really nervous about my turn what am I supposed to do?" Bryan flops his head over. If lightbulbs actually came on over someone's head when the got an idea, I would have one right now. I turn to Bryan.

"Make the BLOCK think it moved!" Bryan looks at me like I'm the craziest kid on earth. "What I mean is, your power is the transmittion of brain waves in the form of music, correct?" Bryan nods. "And music is sound, correct?" Bryan's eyes begin to grow wide as he nods. "Use the sound waves created by your mind to push the block to the other side of the room!" I smile triumphantly.

"Yes! Telopathic sound waves! Why didn't I think of that!"

"Because you're not me." Bryan giggles at my jest.

Reed~

I turn around to face Mr. Redpool. I didn't plan anything past actually moving the block. I look to the rest of the class, but most of them are just staring in shock. Rune gives me an encouraging smile, which was kind of odd for the cold, godly #1 all the rumors made her out to be. Then again, she was probably the least impressed with my display.

My speculations are cut short by Mr. Redpool's hand on my shoulder. He's brought both me and Alynah in front of the entire class. I gulp, preparing myself for whatever punishment he has set out for us.

"You two will be partners in concentrated tests from now on," Mr. Redpool announces warmly. What? "What that means is that, if the task is small range, you two will be working together." I look to Alynah. She gives me the same confused look that I probably have right now. I'm partners? With her? Sure, our gifts are a good match offensively, but I feel like this girl hates my guts already. Mr. Redpool dismissively walks over to talk with Rune, like he had said everything that needed to be explained.

"Is he serious?" Alynah remarks, giving an almost disgusted look. I give her a shrug, and march back over to Mr. Redpool.

"Excuse me, but do you mean we're having detention together, or...?" I ask, trying desperately to understand what he had just said. Mr. Redpool lets out a warm laugh.

"No, Mr. Rickson, quite the opposite," Mr. Redpool says. "What I said was that you two will be partners in our smaller, situational tasks."

"So, what you're saying is... we're going to be combat partners for the entire year?" Alynah asks, almost sarcastically. Mr. Redpool nods.

"Let me explain in more detail," Mr. Redpool suggests. He turns back to the class. "Excuse me, everyone! May I have your attention! What you just saw was an excellent example of successful partnership! This training was not only meant to gauge your growth throughout the year, but also to find the most compatible partners among you students. Those with compatible gifts, but still lots of room to grow together." The class begins to murmur, as Mr. Redpool gestures to Alynah and me.

"Mr. Rickson and Ms. Wilson will be the first partnership of the RGAZ class 2044. After training today, Mr. Mossman and I will discuss the results of this activity, and the remaining partnerships will be announced tomorrow," Mr. Redpool explains. "Partners will train together only under Mr. Mossman, in mostly simulated tasks, so you won't be working together immediately. Let's see, Mr. Mossman will take over your training in... Oh! Starting in October, about a month from now. So, in the meantime, I will make sure you're ready for that point!"

It took a little bit for me to process Mr. Redpool's announcement. We were all partnering up, on... Monday, October 1st? the first day of October class, less than a month from now. And out of all my classmates, I got not Wren, not Bryan, but Alynah as a partner. The one who probably dislikes me the most, for an entire school year. The class murmurs in excitement, but Alynah looks disappointed, and I feel the same way. I bet we both had someone different in mind who we wanted as a partner.

"Well, before further discussion of our partners, we must first finish the training session," Mr. Redpool declares suddenly. "Alynah, why don't you demonstrate your gift? Show us the power of a partnership."

Rune is overall cold and calculating, and she smiled at Reed in an attempt to keep him from fainting, which would postpone training, so don't get any ideas that Rune has a fluffy side. XP

~Bryan

My mind figuratively is blown. Using weird mind sound to move things? Sweet. I've always wanted telekenesis. There is a worrying feeling that this isn't how my power works, but here goes. I draw the colors around everyone into my mind. And send them back, trying to aim at the block. Or something like that.

It doesn't work.

Duh, cement blocks don't have minds, comes the panicked thought. I look at Rune. She shrugs. Too late for partners.

In desperation, I turn towards the Superboy-in-training. I don't want to control anyone else, (cause that's what I'm basically doing. It's not just a pretty melody anymore) but I need to get through this class with some sort of attempt. The ripped dude is already pretty pumped. How can I tell? The arrogant smile obviously. (Definitely not getting some power-related vibes. Don't think about that.)

So, I just give him his emotions. And he swaggers up to the block, easily pushes it across and returns to his spot with a smile, convinced he just upped his popularity and success.

"Uh, Clarke?"  Mr. Redpool says hesitantly.

I step forward quickly.  "That was me Mr. Redpool. No partnership or anything." Gosh, I don't want to be stuck working with that guy for the year. The proud look on his face is already fading, possibly realizing the thought to impress wasn't entirely his. Uh-oh.

"Okay..." Mr. Redpool scratches something on his paper. "Nice job. Now would you mind talking to me after this class?"

"Uh, no sir." How am I in trouble again. Life is seriously not fair. He moves on to the next person.

I did it. No telekenesis though. Shame.

Reed~

Before we knew it, Mr. Redpool ran out of names on his list. I barely even remembered some of the students, even though everybody's powers were some level of flamboyant.

"Alright students. That concludes today's session of training. I know you all know this was mainly a test, but expect future training sessions to be higher in duration and intensity!" Mr. Redpool addressed everybody. "I will now escort you back to room 3012, where we will spend the rest of the day on introductory information, as well as a brief background of RGAZ. Training dismissed!"

Some people groaned at his announcement, others were excited to get out of training. I was still fixated on what had happened during training. Alynah's demonstration had been almost exactly like mine, if not even more powerful. Even scarier was that she could perform her funneling with any type of energy. With a gift like that, I would imagine she could stand toe-to-toe with somebody like Rune at full capacity.

As we returned to the classroom, I got even more lost in thought. Somehow, I had completely forgotten about Wren's demonstration. I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or what, but I couldn't pull it from my memory. It sucked too, because I still had yet to find out about her gift. Then again, talking to her should probably come first.

I thought about everyone I did remember for the remainder of the day. From Elliot the super-powered artist to Karl the muscly meathead, Class A certainly had some interesting gifts. I had better find a way to counter and complement all of them, since I would be in school with most of these people for the next 4 years of school. Before I could even check the time, class was already being dismissed.

"And don't forget, folks, class partnerships will be announced tomorrow morning! Class dismissed"

I began to gather my things, hoping that I wouldn't run into those protestor thugs on my way home when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I had an immediate hunch about who it was. I look up to see Mr. Mossman standing at the side of my desk, smiling his bright, goofy smile.

"Reed, if you don't mind, I'd like to talk to you about something in my office for a little bit," Mossman suggested in almost a whisper. I was a little surprised, but after today, it did make sense. I nod, following him out the door and down the hall to a door marked with his name. He unlocked and opened it, beckoning me inside.

"Just so you know, you're not in trouble or anything," Mr. Mossman mentions, turning on the light and offering me a chair next to his desk. "I know we only met this morning." I nod, although I am a little on edge after everything today. Mr. Mossman sits in his chair, taking a deep breath before speaking.

"Reed, you know about ACE, correct?"

"Uh, yeah." It was kind of out of nowhere, I assumed everybody knew about ACE. They taught even kindergarteners about that to help them cope with their gifts, all it was was a simple acronym.

"Good, so then you know about the 3 types of gift. Amplifiers, Converters, and Emanaters," Mr. Mossman repeats. I nod slowly, not sure about what this was all about. "Reed, you are able to create shockwaves from your hands. So naturally, you consider your gift an emanater, right?"

"Of course," I say, confused about Mossman's lesson on basic gift theory. He shakes his head.

"Reed, let me explain in more detail," Mossman replies.

(Probably gonna continue this tomorrow, it's super long anyways)

Reed~

"An Amplifier is one who can capture and enhance already existing forces, correct? Ms. Wilson is a fine example of an Amplifier, you've already witnessed" Mr. Mossman continues. I nod.

"A Converter is one whose gift allows them to change in physical appearance, be it permanent or temporary. As a matter of fact, I'd say I would serve as a good example of a converter," Mr. Mossman admits. I raise my eyebrows, ready to object, but I realize that I hadn't actually seen Mr. Mossman use his gift yet. He smiles. "You see, my gift allows for the immediate replication of any mammal's appearance and physical abilities, should I come in contact with any of said mammal's hair." my eyes widen. Still smiling, Mossman opens his coat, revealing a patchwork of fur insulation on the inside, almost like a shag carpet.

"Let's see... how about... a silverback gorilla?" Mr. Mossman ponders, reaching to a patch of jet-black fur. Almost instantly, Mr. Mossman emits a plume of white smoke, revealing what he had predicted, a gorilla, in his place after the smoke cleared. I stand in surprise, looking to see if Mr. Mossman was ok, but I see his emerald green eyes in the place of the gorilla's eyes. That really was him. He reaches down to a smooth patch of brown hair, presumably his own, and another cloud of smoke erupts from his body.

"That's right Mr. Rickson," Mr. Mossman confirms, now back in his human form again. "I can turn into animals, in short. Professional Hero: The Beast, at your service." Still in awe at the power of his gift, I sit back down. If he had that kind of power, those thugs must've not even known who he was.

"But, hypothetically, couldn't you shapeshift into other people too?" I theorize. "I mean, you said all mammals, right." Mr. Mossman's smile quickly turned into a grimace.

"Truthfully, I do not know, Mr. Rickson, and I do not plan to any time in the future," Mossman replies. "Such power is a violation of human rights, and using it would make me no better than the villains I swore to fight against." I nodded. That made sense, although in a last resort situation, I wonder what he would do. It was kind of scary, imagining somebody as strong as Mossman in a situation like that...

"But that brings us to the last kind of gift-users. Emanaters," Mr. Mossman says abruptly. An Emanater has the ability to emit power from within themselves, rather than change existing power. Extreme cases of this type of gift manifest in forms like hypernature, Ms. Hyperkill's power." I nod again, still wondering what he was trying to tell me.

"I understand, but I know all of this already. Not to be rude, but what are you trying to say?"

"Reed- I've been talking with some other teachers, reviewing footage, and I think I've had a breakthrough. You're not an Emanater, you're an Amplifier, just like Ms. Wilson," Mossman explains. I frown, not knowing what he means.

"You see- your doctor has probably just concluded that the energy stored in your hands and knuckles has been boosted massively, right? But I think that theory is false. Your gift itself is the ability to amplify any shock within your own body." He continues. "What you use right now is merely a reflex. If I'm not mistaken, then you have the potential the create and control shocks from anywhere in your body, repeatedly and at much larger magnitudes."

"Are you serious?" I exclaim. Mr. Mossman nods somberly.  If that was the case, then- maybe me getting in wasn't a fluke after all. Maybe something big was about to happen. "But why did you tell me on the first day of school? What's going to happen next?" Mr. Mossman hold up his hand to stop me.

"I brought it up now because I had. The entire class will soon be training with some serious, personalized equipment," Mossman explains. "If I didn't tell you now, you would be confused about your equipment."

"What equipment?" I ask with a frown. Mr. Mossman grins, revealing and displaying a huge stack of blueprints and paperwork.

"Your prototype super suits!"

I'm sorry I haven't been posting! I'm also going to be away for the first week of July so I might not post as often.

Izzie~~

I take a deep breath and start walking up to the girl named Rune. I'd seen what she could do and I was hoping she could help me with my teleportation. Kids look at me with a sort of shocked horror and fear as I walk up to her.

"Hello." I say.

She turns around and raises her eyebrow.

"My name's Izzie, Izzie Glow. And I saw what you did, and I was wondering if you have any tips for teleporting? Because I can do it but it's really hard for me." I say quickly.

She says

Okay Moonfrost!

Rune~

A sheepish girl walks up to me.

"Hello." I turn around and raise an eyebrow. She winces slightly.

"My name's Izzie, Izzie Glow. I saw what you did, and I was wondering if you have any tips for teleporting? Because I can do it but it's really hard for me." Izzie's eyes flicker upwards from the ground to meet mine, and I see a spark of hope hidden behind shyness. I furrow my eyebrows, mainly because my power just comes naturally for me. I hold up a finger.

"Hold on a second." Izzie winces again at the sound of my voice. I put my finger down. "What? I'm not going to hurt you." The poor girl relaxes a little bit. I turn my focus inwards and teleport three seats back and up. "Hmm." Now I know what to say as I jump back down to Izzie. "How do you feel when you teleport? What do you THINK about?" Her eyes glaze over for a second, thinking hard. She looks at me.

"I have to concentrate really hard and think about where I am going to go."

"Ah! That's why you are having trouble. You're thinking too hard about your destination, not about teleporting itself. Your power already knows where you want to be, it's just a matter of telling it to go there." Izzie's face lights up like a lamp at midnight when it's overcast outside.

"That makes sense! Thanks Rune!" She grins.

"You're welcome." I smile ever so slightly.

@Rogue: Your similes are amazing lol

Reed~

I try to get a look at the stack of papers, but Mr. Mossman pulls them away before I can.

"Woah there champ, those are for later," He remarks. "Right now, all you need to do is focus on your training with Mr. Redpool. You won't start training with me for another month, but I need you to be strong enough to survive the first day." Mossman bellows a laugh.

"Alright, I understand," I say with a frown. For a professional hero, he sure acted like a kid a lot.

"And try to get along with Ms. Wilson, will you?" Mr. Mossman adds, opening his office door. "Some RGAZ graduates have gone on to work with their combat partners in the professional field, so you never know what'll happen between you two." Mossman flashes a grin before beckoning me back into the hallway.

"Yeah, I get it," I reply, gathering my things and following him out into the hallway. Mossman locks the door and flashes a salute.

"That is all I need from you today. I hope to see you ready as ever for training tomorrow!" I wave halfheartedly, before starting down the stairs.

RGAZ was... interesting, to say the least. It was going to be a long first month of training, that was for sure.  I still didn't even know half of my class by anything other than name, but for a highschool class, it wasn't half-bad. In fact, I'd say I was almost excited for the rest of the year to unfold.

@Everybody: There's not a huge need to cover every single moment at RGAZ, and only half of each day is training anyway (The other half being normal academic classes, since RGAZ is still a high school). So we're definitely gonna do some time lapses between now and the sports festival climax, just to make things easier and quicker. Anybody's welcome to skip ahead, but please let everyone else know to make sure we're all on the same page, and you aren't skipping over something that might be important to other characters. I'm gonna skip ahead after Day 2 (When the partners are announced) to around Mid-September, halfway through Redpool's training. Mossman's training begins in October, and the festival is gonna be at the end of October, for future reference. If anybody has any questions or suggestions, please let me know!

Sorry for not posting, I was backpacking! (17 miles on the Appalacian Trail, I would do it again, but not tomorrow.) This partnership is gonna be interesting, because before I even knew about the partnership, I deliberatley set Alynah and Reed up for some tension by saying she hates aloof people deliberately after reading that Reed can be aloof. Although, on this whole partnership business, could the partners maybe not be FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AAAUGH, and be more like actual school projects, and change every month or something? I just want Alynah to get to know everyone, make some friends, etc. Also her power is "compatible" with pretty much everyone, so it would be interesting for her to try being partners with everyone, especially if she might end up being a professional hero with them! Okay, sorry for the long rant on my part, now Alynah will rant to you about pretty much the same thing!

Alynah~

I'm partnered up with Reed. Of all of the people. Because my gift is so "compatable" with his. Why. My gift is "compatible" with everyone's! I want to keep being annoyed, to get all worked up about this, but I tell myself to stop. However, my mind refuses to let the topic go. Why do I not like Reed so much? Maybe it's because it seems like he thinks that he's above everyone else. Me, specifically. If I know anything, that's false. Maybe it's my gift, maybe my expiriences. Maybe I know that being gifted doesn't mean you're better. It doesn't mean that you can't be hurt. My fingers have worked their way absentmindedly up to my chin. They're now rubbing at the makeup. I yank them back down, wiching I could tell them off.

I see someone's eyes flick over at the sudden movement. Luckily, the currently lecturing professor doesn't notice. I take a closer look at the girl. She's that brown-haired girl who came in with Reed yesterday. I didn't catch her name, although I don't think I've heard her talk yet. She's deathly shy, but seems... nice, I guess. I remember her power let her shift into a wolf yesterday. I think. She sees me looking at her and instantley looks away. Hm, I think, Maybe I should get to know her better.

~~~
Aspen, are you still here? I think that Wren and Alynah would make good friends. Maybe thay could rope in someone else, and Viola! We've got a friend group. I do think people shoud start making friends, though. Not just ships.
