The Deck of

Chatterbox: Inkwell

The Deck of

The Deck of Cards

You're an alley dog. You were born on the street with no master, no friends, a free dog in this crazy world. You steal food, find shelter under benches and trees, while constantly running away from the dog catcher and the threat of custody hanging over your head. You want your freedom, and you will do anything to keep it. Every new moon, when the sky is darkest, you and the other alley animals  meet behind the local Casino to discuss everything that has happened since your last meeting. The last meeting you attended was in an uproar about the new disappearances of comrades, disappearances like nothing the city has ever seen before. It could just be the work of a new dog catcher on the streets… or something more sinister. 52 have gone missing since the last meeting, granting this case the name Deck of Cards. What will you do about this? What will you do to keep your freedom you have tried so hard to keep? What will happen to you?

Greetings. I am Asphalt, leader and organizer of the New Moon gatherings. We have gathered here today to discuss the outbreak of a new dog catcher. Yes, as you may know, this dog catcher has been the unfortunate fate of many of our comrades this past moon. Hush! Wait! Call to order! No, it is nothing more than a new dog catcher! Nothing more! Yes, 52 have gone missing. Yes, I suppose you’re right, that is the amount of a deck of cards. Call to order! Now, to protect our freedom, we must do something to get in the way of this new catcher. Yes, and save our 52 comrades. I need volunteers to help our cause. Call to order! These volunteers will work together to track this new dog catcher. Once they are found, if backup is needed, please see fit to start a bark track. No, nothing bad will happen to said volunteers. You will form a pack, nothing can hurt you when you are in a pack. Be careful not to let them solo you out. Do you understand how important that is? Good. Remember, a pack is as strong as its weakest link. Do I have my volunteers? Good. With the moons light, you will find this dog catcher and save our comrades. It is up to you. Good luck, chasers of the Deck of Cards. Meeting adjourned.

Hey all! Yes that was pretty vague, if anyone has any questions, please ask! (Pre-answers to some questions probably) you can have had many charries as you wish, just don’t go overboard! Yes, the story will center around the volunteers, the chasers of the Deck of Cards. We will develop the plot as we move towards. I was thinking they lived in a suburb off of a city, so not too city-like but still dirty with allies and trash dumps and such. I’ll post my charrie later!

May I join? This... this is interesting!

(Obviously my character wouldn't have a sibling or friend missing - that would mess up the Deck of Cards thing. But he could have reasons of his own....)

Just a question, how could alley animals have ever seen decks of cards? Or know how to count? I mean, perhaps if a crow or raven happened to peek over some shady people's hands playing cards and randomly count them for a lark, but it seems unlikely. Just wondering if there's a deeper overall connection in the plot.

Hiya Chinch! You'll have to clear that with Claaws first, but if she says okay then we'd be glad to have you! Could I interest you in making another wolf, possibly to be Fang's only friend and also possibly her shipmate? *Smiles hopefully*

Thank you Storm for the note about crows and ravens!

Rouge, please see my note responding to your post a little up on the page before this one.

Lol ya Tux, thats great! Is it ok if I play off it a little more?

@Moonlight, Summit is already being shipped with Jade. But we can do a triangle thing if you like. Oh and do you mind if I changed what you wrote a tad? It'll still be the same concept. Oh, and Aspen, Leeli, Ty, Catsclaw, and Insomatic, introduce your dogs (or cats. or ferret.) before someone does it for you!!!!

Chinchilla, the meeting place is behind a Casino, that's why! Maybe theres some other reasons...hmmm maybe we'll figure it out as we go along...but ya feel free to be like, one of the captured 52 that just happened to escape or something. Maybe you can tell us whats REALLY happening behind those pound doors (or wherever they may be we haven't gotten that far with the plot) ;p

~Charcoal

I snorted impatiently and gave the cute little hunting dog an amused look. He seemed quite anxious, about what, I had no idea. It's not like anyone he knew was captured, as far as she knew. In no more then a few heartbeats of all 13 dogs exchanging glances, I felt little paws grip my back leg. I whipped around as a little rat picked her way across my pelt to then stand bravely atop my head. I sputtered in mix surprise and anger "Hey! You just can't do that whenever you like!" I managed to spit out at some point.

"Hey, um I'm Cinnamon and I'm in this because... I like adventure?" The little roll of fluff offered in a high, nervous voice.

I felt the small animal's paws shift on my head before she slid down my back and then down my tail. I turned to stare at her as she made cute little rat sounds at the ferret, and then sauntered off to the garbage can. I bearly flicked an ear as a fox-like thing stepped up. "My name is Sakura and I wish to find my brother," I turned to give the haughty tone in her voice a good old glare before turning back to watch the small rodent pounce on a piece of paper.

I ignored the glare in my fur from the little fox-dog, and instead gave an amused look towards the smaller animal taring apart the paper. I turned and walked over to get a better look, as apparently, the little fox said, "if you have a problem with that then leave." She then continued to glare at me as I left the circle.

I sat down next to the rat right as she finished off the paper and was turning to look back at the argument coming to play in the circle of now 11 animals. "So," I scoffed with a supiorer flick of my ear. "You like adventure?"

She looked up at me and wrinkled her nose to mimic the disapproving look I was giving her. "So," she squeaked. "You don't?"

I couldn't help but laugh. "Come now, why don't you stick with me? Aren't there rat-eating cats here?"

"Aren't there rat-eating dogs here?" She shot back, not budging.

I laughed again. "Oh yes, but I promise I have never eaten a rat in my life. And I would never eat a Cinnamon roll such as yourself."

"My name's just-" She started before I picked her up with my front teeth and carried her back to the circle, where it looked like a fight was breaking loose.

~Summit

I was looking down at my paws, oblivious to the squeaks the new speaker was giving off, as I suddenly noticed another pelt by my side. "Is something troubling you?" The voice asked. "Something I said?"

I looked over at the old dog. It wasn't really his fault, how would he know about my old owners? I shook my head suddenly. I told myself I would stop thinking about what I've done, and how to prove myself. Because I dog like me is just going to mess up again and again and again.... "I'll be fine thanks." Whicker gave me a skeptical look. "I'm fine." It was a hollow promise, as all of his promises are.

"Right, well, if you need to talk, or something like such... just know that, well, I'm here for you. And everyone else in this pack." I couldn't help but smile a little bit.

"Thanks, Whicker. That means a lot. Really." But it also got me thinking. Packs are supposed to support each other, so if a pack abandons you... are they even a pack at all? Were they even a pack to begin with? Was I beating myself up over nothing?

He angled himself back to the center of the circle, and I followed. A hush had gone over most of the animals. I exchanged a glance with Whicker. "I am Fang, the Phantom." It was a deep voice coming from a sharp looking she-wolf, the likes of which made Summit growl. "I have volunteered to serve alongside the Chasers of the Deck of Cards."

Who did she think she was? I couldn't help myself as my ears went back and my hackles rose. She was turning to leave, and I stood up, before the ferret, who had yet to introduce herself, demanded, "wait! Where do you think you're going, wolf?"

The she-wolf strode up to the ferret and gave her an 'I'm-better-then-you' look, but the ferret still held her ground. "Where I please rat." She turned and met Summit's gaze with chillingly cold eyes. I won't hurt anyone unless they attack me first, just a warning." She slipped towards the edge of the circle and said over her shoulder, "Go ahead and resume. To the official chasers of the Deck of Cards, I will meet you at the main outskirts of town at Dawn. We have things to discuss."

She turned to leave but I stood up and barked, "WHO do you think you are?! You can't just BARGE ON IN HERE, oh mighty 'Phantom', this is a pack, you can't talk to us like that." My voice suddenly became steely as I walked up to her with my tail straight out, and my fangs bared. "We. Are. A. Pack. You're either in it with us, or not at all. You don't even have a reason to come with." I was now no more than a tail-length away from her. "You're either part of this pack, or you're not. And I can tell you which side you'd prefer to be on at this moment."

I could sense Whickers approval, I had taken his words kindly. We are a pack. All of us. And we had each other's backs, whether facing a mysterious dog-napper, or a stuck-up she-wolf. "I can tell which side you're about to wish you never crossed." She growled.

I crouched down. "Why don't you show me what you're worth she-dog?"

"STOP!" Someone barked so loud it startled me, and the wolf too, though she bearly showed it. "ITS THE DOGNAPPERS! SCRAM!"

The wolf was gone in a heartbeat. "You'd better be watching your back." The she-dog who had interrupted us was now by my side. And I noted absentmindedly that there was no scent or sight of humans outside of the Casino. "I'm Nova, by the way. And you're lucky I said that when I did. Do you even know the rumors about how she ended up packless? They say she killed her humans pretty cruley..."

"Wait everyone stop!" I barked and all 10 creatures froze or looked at me in confusion, or ducked behind the trash bin. "There's no humans false alarm. Is everyone here?"

"Everyone 'cept the wolf." Whicker nodded. "We aren't going to meet her at the outskirts of town are we?"

"Dunno." I shrugged. "Depends where the dognapper's scent trail leads."

"Oh!" Nova barked so suddenly it shook my ears. "I picked up a scent trail a little ways over there. I recognized it as the same scent the humans left behind after Sky and mum went missing, it gave me that idea... to stop your fight." I blinked at her. "I'm Nova." She said, turning to the rest of the dogs, probably thinking that she better introduce herself before they start calling her the 'false alarm' dog. "And as some of you know I am here to rescue my mom and brother who were taken in the 52. So ya." She looked around. "Uh, so who's next?"

Oh and guys, feel free to add random dogs to the 52 Deck of Cards whenever you like, you just have to be able to remember them if anyone asks for a list or anything.

I'm adding an Ibizan Hound with a reddish-brown and white coat. She's 8 and almost mentor-like, with a sort of superiority about her. She'd be a good coach. She has a rough way of speaking and doesn't care much for others feelings. She's agile and wirey, and loves snow. Her name is Fox. She's all reddish brown except for her white under-belly, neck, tail tip, and face except a reddish-brown stripe down her right eye.

Her mate, Buck, has more of a white stripe down the middle of his face. He's more subdued, like a family dog rather than an adventure dog. He's probably going to die, to be honest (or find a family). This isn't a family dog sort of story! They're the 9 and 8 of Diamonds.

(look up Ibizan Hounds and if you find a picture with two dogs of the same descriptions, one standing up and the other sitting down, that's them! I just didn't think we were allowed to post images from google lol I had this whole plagiarising lesson in class and it scared me a bit so I went ahead and tried to describe them instead)

Quick note: Fang was being insulted by the rat, not the ferret. I still haven't morized all of the names yet. :P She would never insult anyone like that.

Fang~

I watch them from the shadows, but they don't know it. One dog says something about a rumour in which I killed my humans an that's why I don't have a pack. Inside I scoff. The pugnacious dog who I was about to beat has a terrified look in his eye. I know he is tough, but not tough enough to beat me. Soon they have moved onto other topics, like who is who. My almost-opponent flicks a paw at the old dog.

"Wait. Who is the Phantom?" He adds a mocking tone when he says 'the Phantom'. I smile. He' not going to like this news. The elder wrinkles his brow. He knows the other isn't going to like this as well as I do.

"Fang? Oh... Um, well. Ah, she's the King of Spare..." The pinger dog springs up in panic that he feigns as surprise.

"What?? That akes her the leader of the pack!!"

"Uh, yeah. And you'd better git to respecting her right quick. I've known about her for a while, and let me tell you this. Fang is no dog to fight. Now I'm sure you're a mighty strong and agile dog, Summit, but you've never seen the likes of that wolf. She is the goddess, may right will be the incarnation, of death itself. Go against her, and you're done for. You better be glad Nova here saved you when she did." Nova beamed at Summit. The old dog sighed. "As for her redeeming qualities... Well, Fang be the best canine for this job. She's got good leadership skills, and she's passionate for what she wants. She's also kinder when you get to know her. As for her reason to be with us, I think she's got one of the best reasons of us all." Every dog pricked their ears up. So did I. This old dog knew? "Her pack was wiped out by the dognappers, and the only remaining dog of her pack, other than Fang herself, is Fang's... Fang's... No. I can't revisit that memory." All of the blood had drained from Summit's face.

"Her adopted daughter. I had forgotten." The old dog nodded, his eyes glazed over. Nova's brow furrowed this time.

"I thought her pack left her after she killed her owners." The elder shook his wise head.

"Fang left her owners. They abused her. She ran away and found a wild wolf pack. They came into this city to hunt squirrels and raccoons and rats, but they were shot down. Fang's daughter was a pup, and they took her away. As for Fang herself... I actually don't know how she escaped." Dread and pity hang heavy in the air. I am wrapped in a smothering blanket of thoughts. They knew about Claw. But there was more than that. My pack was taken away from me by those dognappers. I wanted to help these animals get their pack back.

So now you know. Happy? Good.

Alright, cool. But again, we aren’t doing the ‘King of Spare’ things yet, our dogs actually come up with those as we move forward in the RP. And Summit is head-strong, he wouldn’t openly be afraid of some dog who challenged him, I mean maybe he’d feel a bit guilty about wanting to fight her, probably more on the anger side or reflecting about his own pack instead. He still doesn’t like her and is not afraid of her.

Also, I don’t think Tux would like that you controlled Whicker that way... I don’t think whicker would say all those nice things about fang to Summit, or anyone in general, and he defiantly wouldn’t feel the pain for Fang, it wasn’t his fight, things are easier to tel if they aren’t your wounds. Also, fang seems a little too secretive to share all of this with another dog, a male especially.

I think it would be a good conversation starter for more of a little ways in the RP, when Fangs opening up to someone, possibly her already arch-nemesis Summit. Also, the King of Spare doesn’t necessarily mean the leader, just someone with a strong personality. Or at least that’s how I look at it, dunno how everyone else sees it.

Also, I changed the one who you we insulting to the ferret cause Cinnamon was somewhere devouring a piece of paper (or with Charcoal if you’re ok with what I wrote, Blue Moon) and there for not close enough to the circle to be heard or to really care about what’s happening. Also, she seemed curious about it but not defensive, as you wrote her.

Also, I’m not attacking you, just putting out the facts. This is a group RP, if you’re going to write about how others characters react, then you better know their personality, and how their author would like them to come off as in the situation. This is a group effort, and we would all like it if everyone’s characters were respected for how their authors intended them to be.

Hmm. Well Rogue, I like that you're getting your character known and such. But Imma little confused. Does Whicker know her personally or was that someone else speaking? I mean, did Fag tell him, was here there? Or.. what... I like what u wrote tho!

And yeah, what Claaws pointed outabout Whicker could be true, if he didnt have emotional ties with any animal. He's more.. subdued? Is that the word? I mean, he probably would tell, in the end. But he knows people respect him, and he's probably not going to - er condone? it?

But really, no hard feelings! I think Fang is a cool character.

Okay I am not in charge of this RP but there are a few things we have to cover.

@Claaws sry I didn't see that Summit was shipped! Let''s not do a triangle just Nova will be a single pringle lol. And that is okay that you changed it a bit but okay idk where i'm going with this so yea but I kind of liked the idea that they had to leave earl- WAIT! how about after the meeting the dognappers try and capture the thirteen but then they breack out and follow the truck but then they get lost or something! Pls say yes or no to that one I'm fine with either.

Now I am a new CBer kind of so I may not be right no offense if there is some offensive things in here I do not mean them.

@Rouge and Claaws PLS STOP FIGHTING! yes I do belive that this is some sort of disagrement but honestly we can't RP like this. Also I don't like the way that Nova is being portrayed by both of you. She is a quiet type and she doesn't talk much or gossip. That just isn't her. I mean I get that it was my idea but Claaws sry but I think you kind of took it too far. Nova would have just ignored the whole thing unless she smelled the humans. She wouldn't have broken up the fight. Rouge she also doesn't gossip like you had her in your post.

These are just some concerns about the RP and Nova. No idea how to RP stuff right now but pls pls pls pls pls pls look at this and take charecters personalities in to consideration when you rp.

(August 26, 2018 - 1:09 pm)

Of course, Moonlight! Maybe they can still be friends, lol. Im sorry I took it too far, I was trying to incorporate as much of ur post as I could, and I totally see how that changed her character and I’m sorry. Ya I love the idea about the truck! I’m sorry I put your other idea down, but I think everyone should introduce their characters and get to know them a bit first. Well, we’ll give them a time limit so it doesn’t get to stale. How about... Tuesday? Wednesday? Tommarow? How much time should we give them?

I totally agree about taking other characters personalities into consideration before RPing! I’m soooo sorry that I made her come off that way, and please don’t take it perosnaly ;p I will make sure to follow her personality next time, and fix whatever I get wrong about her! (Rogue, that’s how you apologize. Incase you weren’t clear about it)

(Uh who wants to re-write that other scene, or should we just forget it and move on? Like, all of it? Like, Fangs whole thing? (Rouge feel free to write it but AGAIN think about others characters before you post)

Considering that there is a bit of a disagreement going on and some still have to "introduce" their characters, I'm going to post a picture instead of some writing! It's of some ravens and crows or something... I may or may not attempt to draw some other characters.

I added the names for fun, so do not interpret them as characters in the RP (except for the Muninn one of course), but who knows? They could be background characters! (but they can't be part of the 52 of course, since they are all dogs, and why would anyone want to capture a wild crow or raven?)

Cinnamon arranged her tail around herself and looked up at Charcoal. Cinnamon had a bit of a feel that she was being patronized- which she didn’t mind, because wasn’t there some association with being patronized and head pets- but Charcoal seemed nice, all around.

Fang, of course, tried to act all high and mighty. Cinnamon knew most of the animals here already, as as a rat she was in a perfect place to sit casually on someone’s head and eavesdrop on them.

Fang is pretty strong, though, Cinnamon reflected, but she needs to work on her social skills. Her owners probably didn’t teach her anything good, the slimeballs. I bet she doesn’t even know how to fetch!

Now, of course, one of the other animals who thought they were the absolute best at everything stepped up. Aand another. When are they going to stop arguing and save the prisoners?

Then Nova yells something about the dog catchers coming, and everyone panics, freezes, runs. (Except Angel, who bares her teeth and yells something like ‘Stay back! I’m not going to let the ducks win this time!’)

Cinnamon scrabbled up the nearest wall and peered down from the casino window, squeaking angrily. (A chance missed to chitter menacingly. But no one seemed to be impressed, anyway.)

“Wait, wait!” the mottled dog barked. “False alarm!”

Everyone turned around to look at Nova. Cinnamon casually slid down the wall.

”Sorry,” Nova stammered. Cinnamon nodded knowingly at their nervousness and thought something about strong and silent types. “I just picked up a scent trail over there, the same as when Sky and mum were taken— it gave me the idea, to stop your fight. Um, so, introductions? I’m here to rescue my mom and brother who were taken by the dognappers..”

Cinnamon had stopped listening at ‘I just picked up a scent trail,”. She had to follow it! Sniffing around (she could really use a dog here- rats’ chief senses were hearing and touch, which was not helpful,) she found the trail and began to follow it.

”Wait,” a voice said, and Cinnamon spun around. “Where do you think you’re going, little spice?”

A raven was hovering above her, making Cinnamon stand on her hind legs to peer at it. “Following the scent trail,” she said.

”Oh,” said Munnin.

Charcoal turned her head towards them. “Don’t set off yet, Cinnamon. We don’t need more crazy loners on our team.”

”True,” Cinnamon coincided, “But as soon as the introductions are done-“

”Yeah,”. Charcoal said.

A light rain began to fall. The introductions went on for a while until Charcoal’s eyes widened.”Wait,” she said. “The rain’s going to wash away the trail!” Cinnamon hurried back.

She couldn’t smell anything but the scent of water and new earth. She swore, a long rat thing that involved twitching your tail in a complicated way and left Charcoal shocked.

”Where did you learn that?”

Cinnamon smirked and continued panicking gently. “We need to go!” she said. “Charcoal, you have a better nose than me, can you smell anything?”

”A bit,” Charcoal said. “Fang is the best, though.”

”Alright, let’s go before it washes away!”

The other animals seemed to be coming to the same conclusion. One by one, they sniffed the air and looked at each other worriedly.

“Onward!” Angel shrieked, and then they had no choice but to go, and seek the deck of cards.

***

Upping the ante a bit, haha. I know the introductions aren’t done yet, but you can still write yours as there was a section where “the introductions went on for a while”. They might also realize it when they’re on their journey and finish introducing themselves then.
