Chatterbox: Inkwell

Fallen Age RP

The age of technology has come and gone, and with it, most of the human race. After the Great Plague, only a fraction of the humans who once populated the earth are left, and those who remain are faced with the oldest struggle of all time - survival. Survival is everything. Survival is doing whatever it takes to make sure that you make it, even if someone else doesn’t. Because if you die, then so do the memories of every friend and loved one you ever knew who woke up on the last morning of their life to find that they too, had gotten sick. And so began the Fallen Age.

~~~
That was 79 years ago. The smart ones and the strong ones survived. They banded together, because it was the only way, and after a few decades or so, for grit, or resourcefulness, or for sheer force of will, a few came out on top and formed five clans:
Ebony.
Korranth.
The Vali Nation.
X-85.
Incendium.
Some are enemies. Some are allies. They coexist, they fight, they survive. Friendship is something that everyone needs but no one believes in - or dares to trust. But one day, something changes. Scouts bring news of Kzaldaran, an empire devoted to eliminating those who refuse to bend to their will. And they’re coming their way. No one yet has survived their wrath, and the clans won’t either, unless they unite. But will they be able to put aside their differences, their politics and disagreements, or will they fall into a war that will eventually destroy them?
These are the clans:
Ebony - The Ebonese people are unique from the other clans because their ancestors all had one thing in common - their dark, black-brown eyes. These eyes indicated an incredibly rare gene that granted immunity from the Plague. While everyone else around them got sick, the Ebonies stayed healthy. In the first few years after the Plague struck, they travelled from group to group with all the other survivors, but over time they gradually stuck with others with the same ebony eyes, until eventually the clan was formed. As a result, many bits and pieces of other clans cultures have worked their way into Ebonese culture. Ebonies value healing and self sacrifice to help others. Ebony and Incendium have always had a very strained relationship.
Korranth - When the Plague struck, Korranth was one of the last cities infected. It’s leaders, and a selection of the city’s healthiest people between the ages 15 and 25, quarantined themselves and the city’s supplies in the capitol building, and stationed guards around the city to prevent the infected from entering. It didn’t work. One by one, the guards got sick, and soon all of Korranth but those inside the building were wiped out. They did not do the noble thing. They did not do the right thing. But there they were, alive, while those who had were not. Repulsed by what their leaders had done, the young drove out the old and had them make sure it was safe to go outside, and from then on they took charge. Korranthians prize youth and morality above everything else, and will always own up to their mistakes. The Korranth and the Incendi are allies.
The Vali Nation - After the Great Plague, those who survived travelled in small groups from abandoned town to abandoned town, scavenging for supplies. The Vali Nation is built upon scraps and determination, and was pieced together over a long period of time by stragglers and salvaging. They are named after Vali, the Norse god and son of Odin, and one of the few who survived Ragnarok - the end of the world, in Norse Mythology. They are generally more focused on peace and cooperation, and are the only clan to have an alliance with X-85 Teraldi, due to their non-combative nature. Their culture is a mix of any Pre-Fallen Age information they could scrounge up, and customs from the different groups that joined to form the Vali.
X-85 - Also known as Teraldi. Named for the origin of their survival, an isolated, abandoned warehouse in the sector X-85, of the Teraldi forest, that somehow managed to shelter them from the Great Plague. They avoided getting sick only by turning away everyone seeking shelter, and thus they prize hardness of heart and isolation as the most effective means of survival. They accept new members only after intense scrutiny, and are extremely proud and loyal. Their only alliance is the Vali Nation.
Incendium - The most brutal of the clans, named after how they burned an entire village to the ground to wipe out the risk of disease after the Plague, and then built their base from its ashes. The Incendi are warriors through and through, and choose fire as their symbol, seeing themselves as its master. The Incendi and the Teraldi have always fought, the Incendi seeing the Teraldi as cowards and the Teraldi seeing the Incendi as idiots - neither of which is true. The Incendi have always liked to encroach just a little to far on to X-84’s well protected land, which grates against the Teraldi custom of isolation.
My charrie:
Name: Kye Ghidaki
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Clan: X-85
Position/role (leader, second, fighter, hunter, etc.): Leader
Appearance: Around 5’6, with thick, frizzy/curly red brown hair usually in a braid reaching halfway down her back or loose with smaller braids woven in. Light freckles and grey-green eyes.
Personality: Strong and cold. Will do anything to keep her people safe, even if they don’t like it. Respected by her people, and proud. Most people think her emotionless, but this is only because her emotions are so strong she has learned to suppress them and pretend they don’t exist. She believes that they interfere with her ability to lead and make the right choice. Determined, but somewhat close minded.
Background/history: Kye grew up in Teraldi and was elected leader after proving herself worthy through a series of tests administered to her generation, assessing fighting ability and the Teraldi qualities of quick thinking and intelligence. Like all who live during the Fallen Age, she has seen death firsthand. Kye was mentored by X-85’s strict previous leader, Rowan Taliq. She’s had to make it impossible, difficult choices for her people, and though they can’t see it, it’s taken a real toll on her.
Other: It would be cool if she had a second who was her complete opposite, in order to challenge her views
A couple more things:
1. Please try and post regularly. I’d like to keep this rp going and not have it die off. I will probably only be able to post on weekends because school is hard, but I’ll do my best and we’ll see how this goes.
2. This world is yours to explore - feel free to add in any details or develop what you’d like, as long as it’s consistent with what has already been established. I may even change things that I’ve already written in order for things to make more sense or to fix any mistakes.
Varia ~
I sat silent for a few seconds, watching the meeting descend into chaos. I never did understand why other people were so easily affected by such news. After the shouting, mostly cries of "Death!" from the Incendi, had gone on for at least 15 seconds, I stood up. "Enough!" I shouted, loud enough to be heard over everyone else. "Nothing is gained by confusion!" Having silenced most of the clans with that remark, I continued. "Now then, can you tell us anything else about these 'Kzaldaranians'?" "No." The scout replied. "We ran away as fast as we could." "Unfortunate, but predictable. Very well, then I will go on the information I have ..."
"Wait just one minute!" The Incendi leader (Kael, I think?) rose and spoke angrily. "Who are you to tell us what to do? You aren't even a clan leader!"
"But I am one of the most respected tactitians, even among this group. Peacemaker, may I continue?"
"Tell us what you think should be done, Varia. Your opinion may not be followed, but it should be heard."
"Thank you. Now then, I believe immediate action is unnecessary." At that remark, the chaos started again. Quickly, I grabed my halberd and smashed it against the floor. In the stunned silence that followed, I said: "Killing scouts is not uncommon. I believe the X-85 leader was just suggesting that outcome to the Incendi? In addition, stating they want to "destroy" us is ambiguous, in absense of more information. They could have been trying to protect their percieved territory, or any number of other things. Therefore, we should not take action against them until we have more information about theri intent. I propose that a heavily-armed scout group be sent to the general location where this scout was attacked. From there it would try to find this new clan and communicate with them. We can make more effective action if we have more knowledge. I would be willing to lead such a group myself, if my plan is accepted. That is all. Thank you."
So saying, I sat down and waited for the group to decide.
*Panics* Admins, where's my thingy I posted?????
I'll just try again . . . . .
Vesia--
I look at the pearly egg in my hands, on which a rash is starting to deveolp from the blairnberry flowers the egg was buried under. It is a clever defense, that of the pegasi, to bury their precious eggs under the poisonous flowers. Most don't even know they're there. But I have dwelt with the Warlocks Over the Dunes, and I know better.
The pegasi are gone now, anyway. The Incendium took them all for their glowing hide. This egg will not have a home, unless I take it to Kye.
And it will make us great. We shall be the only clan with a living, well-cared for, powerful pegasus, with wings of shadows of fire and cold mountains. We shall quickly rise to power. X-85, Clan of Windborne.
That is what I want its name to be. Windborne. If Kye has a different opinion, of course we'll use that.
I stroll through the Corins du sh'ar (Forest of Fresh Air), getting closer to the settlement. I can already see the ragged banner  through the trees. When I reach Kye's cabin - she and her second are the only ones with a true building as their home, though we are building more - I sit down by the wall, waiting for her to return from the Moors, Windborne's egg clutched in my arms.
I simply hope she will not ask how I knew how to find the egg. She thinks I was taken by Incendium as a captive for a brief while . . . .
The truth?
I was with the Warlocks Over the Dunes.
Kye cannot know.
Here she comes. I do not see good news on her face.
~~~

BTW, the language (corin du sh'ar) doesn't have to be the language of the clan or anything, it can just be a language she learned with the Warlocks. Unless you guys wanna all make a language . .  . in that case:

corin=wood/forest

du= of

sh' = prefix meaning fresh or pure

ar=air.

No, I know what you’re talking about, Tafinx. Jith, if you look on one of the earlier pages of this thread—page two, I think—there’s an RP post by you under your charrie sheet. I’m not sure why it went there. Since you didn’t know what Tafinx was talking about I’m assuming that it was an accident and you meant to submit it like a normal comment?

Yay! We're starting!

~Lisbeth~

I find myself on the frindges of the crowd on the gathering day. We are all clumped on the large field with the gathering tent erected in the middle. The Teraldi clan finally arrives and the leaders head into the tent and begin the gathering.

I step out of the crowed and walk down into one of the little dips that you can find all over the moor.  Sitting out of sight, I pluck a few of the yellow moor flowers then begin to weave them togeather. I have no idea how long I'm going to be here. Some gatherings are quick, but once, one went on for days. As long as I have something to do though, I'll be fine.

From my mostly obscured position, I can hear the murmers of the crowd. Most of the others from my clan think that the gathering is a time to make new friends among the other clans, but I disagree. I don't trust the other clans. You never know when they might be pretending to be friendly, just so they can steal anything that isn't nailed down.

Anyway,  I will wait here for the meeting to end or one of my clan members to stumble upon me. Whatever happens first.

Ath~

I glance at the egg in our visitor's hands. A pegasus egg.  My heart leaps, and not in a good way. Why? Because I, too, have found an egg. And it doesn't belong to a pegasus. Not only that, but it's in a clutch. A clutch of ten. Quietly, I slip out, leaving Kye to the matter. She's the only one with the power to do something about it, anyway. Walking miles into unknown, unclaimed territory, I pick my way through markers that I've set. Subtle, and undetectable except by me. After all, I'm looking for them. Finally, I reach my destination. A huge rock, with a face so smooth even the most experienced climber would slip off of. That's why I brought my polearms. Jabbing them into the ground at an angle, I cross them and make them lean against the stone. Then, I climb onto the crossed section. With a lunge, my hands catch on the tiny amount of ledge at the top. Struggling, I make it up. There are the eggs, eggs-actly how I left them, hidden under a huge pile of leaves. I hold them close. I feel a deep connection with one in particular, a  black-silver one. A weaker connection with an ice-blue one. The others are indifferent. Blazing red, ochre brown, forest green, ocean blue, sunset orange, amethyst purple, sunny yellow, and royal maroon... They seem like they would fit the leaders and seconds of... I look up. I have a sudden urge to listen to the eggs. I put the red and brown ones against my ear.

Incendi

They whisper. Over and over. The red whispers 'leader', the brown 'second'. I know what I must do. These dragon eggs are connected with the leaders and seconds of the clans. I must bring them to their soul friends.

~

Blazing red - Incendi leader

Ochre brown - Incedi second

Forest green - Vali leader

Ocean blue - Vali second

Sunset orange - Ebony leader

Amethyst purple - Ebony  second

Sunny yellow - Korranth leader

Royal maroon - Korrathn second

Ice blue - Teraldi leader

Black Silver - Teraldi second

Blazing has powers over fire, Ochre has powers over soil and earth (cannot breathe fire unless warm), Forest has powers over plants (cannot breathe fire [breathes sleeping gas]), Ocean has powers over water (cannot breathe fire), Sunset has powers over light, Amethyst has powers over crystals, Sunny has powers over light and heat, Royal can read minds unless blocked out, Ice has powers over ice (shocker)(breathes ice but not fire), Silver has powers over lightening and has minor powers over reality.

I sit toward the middle of the gathering, listening to the light (ish) conversation of my fellow leaders. Suddenly, a young person bursts in with the news of a group called Kzaldaran, who apparently want to destroy us all. Another person suggests a peaceful, yet highly armored, group of scouts to go investigate.

"I'm generally in favor of a peaceful solution. Nonetheless, these Kzaldaran people seem to be highly dangerous and I think it'll be disastrous to underestimate them. Therefore, I propose that we do as suggested and send a group to investigate, but in the meantime prepare ourselves here in case they turn out to be more dangerous than expected."

Leeli, could Jaedon and Sasha be friends? They have both lost their families at a young age, so I think they’d connect really well.

Sasha ~

The leaders erupt into arguments for the third time, talking over one another. I listen, but choose to hold my tongue. As the Kael’s second for the Incendium Clan, my duty is to make sure we don’t do anything rash. Hah. That may as well be my middle name. Still, I say nothing, even as Kael’s voice rises in response to the girl’s plan. I cannot argue with its soundness, although I don’t want to trust them. Old friendships and rivalries simmer just beneath the surface, different Clans already picking sides.

“Kael,” I murmur as he steps back from the fray, frustrated. “You know her idea is a good one. Why disagree?”

“I know it is, but can we really trust them? They are giving themselves the perfect opportunity to some of the most important people from each clan well away from civilization. What happens if this is an assassination plot?” He grumbles, eyes flashing.

I give him a look. “You are being paranoid. I know I have only been your second for a few months, but I’m not stupid. We can be careful.”

He stares me down for a moment. I’ve learned not to balk from his temper.

“Fine,” Kael yields. Our relationship as leader and second works well. Under our joint leadership, even I can see that our Clan is beginning to flourish. Sometimes, it may be wishful thinking or maybe its really there, but I feel he treats me like a sibling at times. I’ve always wanted a sibling, and I envy anyone that is lucky enough to have one. Someone tied to you by blood- something I do not have.

The Ebony leader, Jasmine, speaks up finally, “ I'm generally in favor of a peaceful solution. Nonetheless, these Kzaldaran people seem to be highly dangerous and I think it'll be disastrous to underestimate them. Therefore, I propose that we do as suggested and send a group to investigate, but in the meantime prepare ourselves here in case they turn out to be more dangerous than expected."

Leaders turn to their seconds as the Clans confer. Before Kael can start something again, I step forward.

“Incendium can support that plan. May I propose that we take the rest of today, sleep on this, and reconvene at midday tomorrow to come up with further details?”

“We don’t have until midday tomorrow!” someone pipes up from the crowd.

I turn my gaze towards them, letting a bit of the fire my Clan is feared for enter my eyes. “We do. Anyone that disagrees, feel free to fend for yourselves. I tire of arguments.”

“Who died and made her leader?” I hear a scavenger mutter as I turn my back to the crowd.

I let the comment slide, but Kael appears angered. Later. I mouth to him.

The meeting dismisses, and everyone leaves quicker than usual. No one wants to trust anyone, let alone socialize with potential enemies. I still feel restless, and after a short word with my Leader, I head off separate from my Clan, jogging lightly to catch up with one of our Fighters that I noticed slip off early in the meeting.

He is lingering by the edge of the gathering space.

I call out well before I reach his side, but he jumps anyways as I approach, “Kimbr. Where did you go?”

Ath~

With a heavy pack on my shoulders, I make my way to the meeting house. I heard something about a meeting shortly before I left. They should be there now, and I feel slightly guilty about not being there at the start. The dragon eggs clack together softly as I enter the house. Sasha is glaring into the soul of one of the other members. How different we are, having the same position in two clans that went through the exact same danger. I step up to the elevated meeting platform and set the pack on the meeting table.

"I've found some things that may help us, but you must not allow the people to use them. They are special to each and every one of us, and cannot be trained by multiple people." Confused looks all around. I reach over and pull the cloth pack down. The ten eggs sit perfectly still, light bouncing off their smooth surfaces. I pick the silver egg up and hug it close, watching the faces of the leaders and their seconds. Slowly, Kye reaches out and touches the ice-blue egg carefully. Then, she slowly draws it closer to her. With wide eyes, the whispers, "Impossible." The Kael, the Incendi leader, is the second to pull his egg close. His eyes dance with the fiery color of the eggshell.

"Incredible." Sasha caresses the ochre egg.

"So... this one's mine?" I nod. She smiles and admires the egg in her hands. The other leaders and seconds take their eggs, marveling at the impossibility of it all. Dragon eggs. The last dragon was seen over a hundred years ago.

"Please trust me when I say that these dragons must not be used, they must consent to help us." The leaders and seconds nod.

@Jithkeeper and Rogue...

Ok, so I think that the direction that you two went with the Pegasi and dragons and warlocks is really cool, and I love the concept, but this was never really meant to be a fantasy world. I realize I said at the beginning that anyone could feel free to add in whatever details they wanted about it as long as it fit within the context of what had already been established, but I don’t think that magic really does. I really do appreciate the creativity, but I’m going to have to ask you to change a couple of things in order to make it more realistic. You can keep the general idea if you like but the whole magic thing is a bit too much.

Thanks a lot, and I’m sorry and feel really bad about saying this! Your characters are both super interesting by the way, and I’m excited to hear more about them as the story goes on!

OH sorry . . . . but I would like to point out that there doesn't neccesarily have to be magic associated with pegasi. Tey can just be, like, normal animals, but rare. And very powerful. And for the warlocks I was actually thinking more, like, robot-making-seducing-weird-cultish-people who may or may not have to do with the conflict of this story. :D But I can change the name to, let's say, the Mad Scientists over the Dunes . . . . nah that won't owrk. My point is, neither "warlocks" (I couldn't think of a better word) or pegasi actually have to be "magical".

The warlocks do need a bit of supernatural power though, otherwise Vesia's character wouldn't work out.

Sorry for the inconvience!
