Forest Role Play: Part Two

~~~
"In the middle of a huge sea of trees lies a tiny town.
The forest used to be called Silva Vivus Umbrare, which, translated from the old language, means the Forest of Living Shadows, but the people just called it the Woods. Still, the forest lived up to its old name.
The trees moved during the night, uprooting themselves and gliding across the earth to a new spot. Sometimes the guards on duty at night would catch a glimpse of an elk or a deer gliding through the trees with a tall, graceful figure on its back. Occasionally, a larger creature slipped past the guards and stole away a cow or pig or goat.
But even with all the dangers which surrounded them, the people of the town were proud to say that through the half-decade of the existence of the town, they had never lost a person to the woods or to any creature living in the woods.
Until now.
This year, during the Cilana festival, a time in the spring when the people cut down all the trees which have grown at or moved to the edge of town, three young children disappeared.
Alana, an eight-year-old girl with frizzy red hair and a quick smile, Jakob, a serious five-year-old boy with sunburned skin from too many naps in the open, and Zena, a talkative seven-year-old girl with intense blue eyes. Their disappearance stopped the Cilana festival and threw the town into chaos.
The townspeople knew that the three would never have gone off into the Woods by themselves, for the fear of the forest was too deep set in everyone, so the townspeople could only think that they had been kidnapped or stolen. Although the townspeople were frightened and scared and the parents of the children were frantic, only a few people dared to go out into the woods.
You, along with a small group, have decided to venture into the forest to see if the children can still be found. Your bravery has given the town new hope, and the townspeople have provided you with weapons, tools, and horses. You will leave on the new moon.”
Here it is, the long-awaited sequel to the Forest Role Play! For those of you who don’t know, the original thread was created by Hummingbird, who unfortunately left the CB soon after. We kept the thread alive, and ended up finishing Part One in April of 2021. We left several loose ends to be tied up in Part Two--this thread!
I’ll summarize the plot so far, and if you’d like to read the original thread, I’ll link it here: http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/446255
~~~

The characters gather their supplies and leave the village, soon setting up camp for the night. They encounter their first creature, an Ibrix whom Azi keeps and names Ben. The next night, after an argument, their camp is attacked by Hollowfaces, Shadowbeasts, and Murkbeings, dangerous creatures of the forest who can sense and track hatred. They fight off the creatures and make it to a nearby village, where they spend the night. The next day they continue and find a hair ribbon belonging to Zena, one of the missing children. At camp that night, their fire spreads, growing out of control and burning the clearing. Azi, Iyara, and Demi run back into the flames to save Ben and Spirit, Iyara’s dog. They make it out, badly burned, and the group puts out the fire with river water. After searching the forest for a few more days, the characters find a dead eight-year-old boy, though not one of the kids they’re searching for. They hold a funeral, and an upset Demi wanders into the woods and is kidnapped. She wakes up next to Jakob, one of the missing children. Back at camp, the characters realize Demi is missing, and birds (whom Jeannie can speak to) lead them to Demi and Jakob. There’s a fight, and everyone but Demi, Jakob, and Ash are captured. To escape, they jump out of a moving wagon, then follow the wagon after meeting up with Demi, Jakob, and Ash. Bradley breaks his arm and it starts to rain, so they set up a shelter. Zabder wakes up with amnesia, and the other two missing children, Alana and Zena, show up out of the forest. Meanwhile, Ash wanders into the woods and meets an elf-like creature, a Fynchnox, who has another Zena. Demi finds them and gets hit by an arrow, and the others run away while Macey offers to trade herself for Zena. Caston and Azi remember the Fynchnox’s weakness is cold, and they all go back to help while Demi stays with the kids. They defeat the Fynchnox, but then realize that there are two Zenas. Sebastian figures out who is the real Zena because on is missing the hair ribbon that they’d found earlier. They decide to return to the village, but realize they’re lost. Just as they think they’ve found their way, they’re attacked again by Shadowbeasts and mysterious figures throwing knives. They retreat, heading back to the village, but when they arrive they find it empty.

~~~
That’s Part One in a nutshell. Our plan for Part Two is that the characters will leave the children at the village and venture back out to discover who kidnapped them in the first place, and why. Any inactive characters from Part One will stay back to take care of the kids, and any new characters that join will be survivors found in the village. As Hummingbird originally said, don’t be afraid to move the story forward! Create new creatures, add plot twists, make things happen! Hopefully everyone grows to love this story as much as we do.
Name: Dusk Collymore
Age: 14
Gender/pronouns: Demigirl, she/they
Appearance: She is average in most technical terms - height (idk 5 foot something), weight, and muscle. Their hair is lilac and blue, mixed perfectly, with lighter blue tips. It was cut seemingly hastily, to the shoulders, and unkempt, with several small braids throughout. Her skin is mid-toned (olive-ish) and her eyes are as dark as midnight. Her face is the kind of face that you forget quickly, without many defining traits except for a nose that looks a bit like Lapis Lazuli’s from Steven Universe. They try to keep their outfits neutral, using ivory, tans, blues, and greys, even in disguise. Her normal outfit is an ivory tunic tied with a leather belt above her waist, and tan stirrup pants with grey loose boots that hang around her ankles, lined with fur. She also wears leather fingerless gloves and a cropped jacket lined with fur (it has a hood), both made by their mother before her death. A hunting knife hangs from their belt, along with a baggie of currency. They generally are quite clean, but won’t go crazy if they don’t shower for a bit. She blushes easily.
Personality: Shy and untrusting, won’t talk much unless prompted, distant, almost always in their own head. Good in combat, if using her powers or her knife. Thinks of herself as beneath most others, but can stand up for themself/friends if needed. Lets their feelings bottle up until it’s unbearable. Almost always looking for advice, but quite good at giving it. Rebellious and nderstands that sometimes sacrifices need to be made. A bit oblivious. Feels horrible when she does something wrong, even the smallest thing, but forgives others quickly if they are a friend. Enjoys solitude.
Quirks: Extremely nyctophillic (loves darkness and night) and her circadian rhythms are messed up; goes to bed SUPER late and wakes up redonkulously early. Plays with their hair a lot. Quite resistant to cold temperatures (within reason)
Flaws: Doesn’t trust herself or others, terrified she will hurt someone with her powers again (keeps it secret for as long as they can)
Shipping: open to females and enbies. They will take a long time to trust/develop feelings, though.
Other: She has umbrakinesis (power over shadows) and can manipulate shadows/shadow travel. Dusk is from a village outside the woods, where she lived with her Father and sister. Their mother was killed in a raid on the village, and for some reason their Father blames Dusk for her death. After 3 years of this, Dusk snapped and injured her Father and sister with umbrakinesis. They quickly shadow traveled far away, into the town in the woods. She’s lived here by herself for 6 months and still feels bad for hurting her family. She doesn't know the Woods is "The Forest of Living Shadows".
Please let me know if she is too OP <3
Alrighty! Here is my charrie! And in case yall were wondering, closing night was saturday and it went really smoothly!
Name: Ellery "El" King
Age (12-20): 16
Gender/Pronouns: male he/him
Appearance: He has blond, fluffy hair that is on the longer side so he can kind of braid it. He wears headbands and bandannas to keep his hair out of his face. He is about average height, has light skin, and dark brown eyes. He always has cuts and bruises all over him, he has a slit in his eyebrow, a nose piercing, and has a chip on his front tooth. If flannels are a thing, he wears them. If not he wears trousers and a white or black shirt.
Personality: He can feel very strongly about things. He sometimes says things without thinking, He means the best but can offend others, he can get flustered and embarrassed very easily, he is not afraid of a fight (verbal or otheriwse), He is on the smarter side and he is not very patient. touch is his love languange, when people do touch him he gets flustered. When he is flustered his face turns red and he gets quiet when he talks, he also tries to hide his face with something. He cares a lot about people and will make sure that everyone is okay. (Just an idea but maybe he could become the big brother of the group? Or something like that? I know that he is not the oldest one but it's just an idea)
Quirks: fidgets with his hands when nervous, he knows how to fight with a sword kinda well(not really), and he has really good senses. Like he can hear small things or feel someone brush up against him or like see something clearly that others would see as blurry. It's not anything super human though he just has heightened senses. Also whenever someone touches him he gets rather flustered because touch is his love languange and he really really wants people to like him
Flaws: he's kinda clumsy. It's gotten him into some sticky situations. he is also not patient which can cause group tension,
Shipping: open to males or non-binaries.
||Sky Oak||
Your name is Sky Oak.  You feel the pressure of those words around you.  You feel your entire personality within those words.  And yet.  They are a little frayed at the edges.  Peices broken off.  Memories rubbed and rubbed until they've fallen off.  Sky Oak.  It resonates within you.  A bird chirps a
A sparrow breaks into my dream.  I wake up and shake off the feeling of sleep.  I'm laying off to the side of a clearing, dust, earth, trees and little tent-houses surrounding me.   It looks similar to what I've known before, but a bit different, as if it's lacking some... luster, perhaps.  I blink my large eyes and stare around me.  There is no one here that I can percieve.  I am alone.
Not alone, I laugh to myself.  There are so many beings surrounding me.  Look there, a metallic green beetle.  A squirrel in that tree.  That worm beneath the dirt.  I've got lots of company, hidden in the green and brown.
I hear chattering through the trees.  Not the chattering of squirrels or chipmunks or mosquitos, but words, words I can understand.  Words full of hope and anticipation and releif.  Words of impatience and hunger and frustration.  Words of mediation and humor and sadness.  Words of confusion, of emotion.
Many people break through the leafy barrier surrounding this little village. Mostly youth, but their ages varied greatly.  At least three were around seven.  Others were perhaps eighteen.  I recognize none of them.
Jeannie~
a few weeks later
Jeannie stares at herself in the mirror, cracked and smudged, human face barely discernible beyond the ash and dust that won't scrub off and the spiderwebbing from when she dropped it two years ago and then hid it because she was too scared to tell her mother.
Her mother: missing, just like everyone else. What once was a busy town full of life- horses, people, dogs, cats, mice, birds, goats, pigs, even- is now full of ghosts and dusty furniture.
Slowly, the people have started to emerge. One after another, but it's been so long that the the current head count, including Jeannie's original party, is probably the final one: Twenty one people, almost all teenagers and children.
She places the mirror on her bedside table and stands up, the mattress creaking eerily, but it doesn't bother her because this has been her room for her entire twelve-almost-thirteen years of life, and this has been her mattress for that long too: it's always creaked.
Jeannie clatters down the stairs to check on Alana, who's reading one of her old books on the floor. As the oldest of the two remaining members of the Lucas family, it's Jeannie's responsibility to take care of her younger, more vulnerable cousin.
(Who gave her this idea, no one knows, but it's easy to forget that Jeannie isn't even a teenager yet.)
Demi has been dropping in often, because Demi is like that: she is always everyone's rock, their shoulder to cry one or lean on or sleep on or whatever else they could possibly need.
Sometimes Jeannie wonders who her rock is, or was.
Almost tripping over her cousin brings her back to reality. After poking Alana once or twice and telling her that she'll be out back, Jeannie leaves through the kitchen door, deciding to spend a little bit of time in the barn.
Honestly, it was only luck that kept the horses currently boarding there alive. Many had disappeared with their owners, but a few had been found grazing just outside the town limits, but close enough to civilization that the monsters hadn't venture near yet, probably where they'd been when the disappearance had happened.
When Jeannie pushes open the door, shedding a little more of the afternoon light on the bales of timothy hay and dusty leather tack, the smell that is unmistakably barn fills her nose. She gives each horse a pat on the nose (there are only six of them left, now, and the row of eighteen stalls feels empty) and fills up the wheelbarrow with flakes of hay. They are running low, which is concerning, because the person who usually provided hay has disappeared with the rest of the town.
"Can I help you with that?" a quiet voice says.
Jeannie jumps and whirls around, flake dropped and hand going to the knife she'd recently acquired, currently sheathed and tied around her waist.
A green eyed girl, looking slightly frightened, stands in front of her, ready to bolt.
"I- oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I just- I don't know. I'm sorry," Jeannie finishes lamely, carefully putting the knife back into the leather pocket.
"It's okay," the girl says a little less quietly. "I startled you. I get it. If the wolf stalks the deer, how should the stag react when the pack surrounds them, even if they wish to work together?"
Jeannie isn't quite sure how to respond to that. "But the wolf is the predator. Its motive is food. Why would it- never mind. Anyhow. I could use a hand, yes."
The girl nods and begins helping her stack the flakes, one on top of the other until the wheelbarrow has enough for the six horses' lunch.
"You're Jeannie, right?" she says after a little bit, as Jeannie throws a flake to Seafoam, her personal favorite. (Seafoam has always been her horse, and Seafoam has been through everything Jeannie has, all twelve years of her life.) "Yeah. And you're...?"
She feels terrible about it, but the girl's name is a mystery.
"I'm Sky." And now she remembers- the girl who showed up out of nowhere. Hopefully Sky doesn't notice when her eyebrows creep just a little bit further up her forehead before settling back into their usual spot as Jeannie pushes the wheelbarrow a little bit further down the aisle.
~~
That was very rambly and not much happened, sorry. For some context: Jeannie's family ran the town's private barn, where people board their horses if they don't have a barn of their own. She's grown up helping out and riding and horses are a huge part of her life. I know I didn't really write her like she's twelve and that she kept going off on tangents, but I think that's just how Jeannie will be, even though I didn't include it in the charrie sheet- the misadventures of her and her party will have made her even more head in the clouds than she was before, but at the same time more down to earth. I don't know XD Now I'm going off on a tangent so I'll stop now hah.
@Tsuki, I hope it's okay that I controlled Sky a bit?
@Cynthia, I hope my description of Demi was okay. In pt 1. that's how she always seemed to me, holding the group together and such. I actually really admire her XD
@Everyone else, if you want to butt into Sky & Jeannie's conversation just step right in :)
Serenity
I wake up and listen to the trees rustle in the wind. It calms me. Wait, wasn't I already calm? Oh well. I jump out of bed and yawn. I walk outside and look around. This place always seemed dead in the morning. The wind seems to make a song. I hum the song I hear. I can speak to elements, which some people think is weird (I know I said she can only hear the truth, but I wanted to change her power, so now she can speak to the elements. She can't control them though). I suddenly notice two people talking. That's weird. It usually seems dead here in the morning. "Hey. Who are you? Why are you up so early?" I say. They both jump and turn to look at me. "Um, hi." one of them says. "Hi. Will you answer my questions?" I ask. The one who spoke before said, "I am Jeannie. I am up early because I woke up. Who are you?" "I am Serenity. I got up early cause that is what I always do." I answered. "I noticed that the other person had not spoken. I ask her, "Who are you?" "That's Sky." Jeannie said. "Oh." I say, not sure why. Well, I know I can't stick around. People sometimes freak me out. Plus I wanted to visit someone. "Well, I have to be going. Bye." I say as I hurry off. "Going to visit the lake?" a voice like rustling trees says. "Hello Breeze! Yes I am!" I say as I smile. I know the names of elements, but there are different "people" in the elements. For wind, I know Breeze, Sky, Windy, Gust, and many others. When I get to the lake, I sit on my swing that hangs below this gianormous tree. I say to Lake, "How are you?" "I am fine. I hope I warm up soon. It is not the best being cold. But I suppose it would be awful to be boiled." Lake says in her icy voice. I laugh and say, "Yeah! It probably would!"
