BIG Cadet Academy

BIG Cadet Academy for the Valiant

In its dying moments, SOCS merged with BIG, despite the fact that they'd been enemies for a time. BIG's cadet academy had already been established, but suddenly BIG had a bunch of experiments left over from SOCS. BIG wasn't so evil to keep up something so unethical as experimentation on live subjects… but these were the leftovers. The war is getting long, hard. They're starting to justify the use of experiments in hopes of creating stronger, genetically enhanced soldiers.

Meanwhile, BIG Cadet Academy for the Valiant is accepting more and more students at an alarming rate. Feeding children as young as eleven propaganda, teaching them to fight, and then placing them on the battlefield or into labs as soon as they come of age, it seems as though BIG is getting more desperate (and ruthless) than ever before…

***

Here is the recreated (and hopefully better) version of the original boarding school roleplay. The very basic story is summarized above, but I'll put it in clearer terms. The story is that now that SOCS, a very evil group of scientists who used to experiment on live beings, has been destroyed, BIG has been left with their experiments. At first, they were only using the leftovers, but they have now grown so desperate for power in the war that they are creating more experiments in an effort to make stronger soldiers. BIG also has a boarding school for students (BIG Cadet Academy for the Valiant or BCAftV) who will either fight or do science for them when they graduate. Mostly students learn propaganda about BIG, science, and combat skills, although all of the core classes are more or less there. At the academy, there is a lab. Some experiments are living in the lab for the students to use as test subjects in their lessons. But when a group of students becomes aware of these experiments plot for escape, they have to decide if they want to help or not. This roleplay will be about the days leading up to a small rebellion from students and experiments at BIG. If you have a half-baked, undeveloped idea for a character, don't worry because this is a perfect place for character development!

Your character can be a student or an experiment. While there is no limited number of characters, we ask that there only be up to eight experiments right now for smoothness and believability. Please consider if you will have time to commit to this roleplay before you join, especially if you're making an experiment character. Two of my characters are experiments, which leaves six experiment slots left as of right now. You don't need to have been in the old roleplay to join this one! If you were in the original roleplay, you can keep your character or make a new one. I'm also going to give you first dibs on experiment slots if you already had an experiment character for the next few days; that only seems fair.

AERONA.

I snort with contempt. These people think they can just magically give soldiers wings? My pale yellow eyes land on the person who just spoke.

“You’re Cress, right?”

Without bothering to confirm, I continue.

“Here’s the thing. The process of the avian DNA of choice combining with human DNA is extremely painful. The DNA itself needs to completely recode which exhausts a lot of resources. Unless you’re pre-preparing an army of avian soldiers, it’s not going to work that fast.”

I think for a second, my braincells whirring.

“Oh, and I’m pretty sure you need to speed up the rate of cell division and feather growth in my wings for these to kick in faster, but that could be cancerous.”

I shrug and continue to tap the side of the glass nonchalantly.

** update— Alistair has a tail now. Bc why not.

if colin / spiderwort want to work w/ ali as an experiment i'm cool with that

^Lee^

"Sounds good, I guess," Aly said. "Though I'm not entirely sure how rainbow wings give camouflage." She laughed. "I get your point though. Rainbow wings it is. So, we should probably gather the supplies. Maybe some iron oxide for red, yellow, and orange, chromium oxide for green, some anthocyanin for blue, and manganese violet for purple," she said, reading from her notebook. "Anything I'm missing?"
Before Lee could reply, the experiment spoke up. "Uh, how long is 'temporary?'" they asked aloud.
Lee glanced down at the experiment, then turned back to Aly. "Just to the end of lab, maybe?" she said. "But yeah, the ingredients sound great! I'm thinking we'll need to also angle the feathers certain ways so they reflect back different colors in different lights, more rainbow-y. After we're done, we can reangle the feathers and take out the colors so they're back to being black!" She turned back to Experiment 235. "Aren't you excited?" she asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "This is gonna be so fun!"
~~~~
note: this is all based on a quick search of how birds (especially hummingbirds) have different colored wings -- @Peri, I'm not certain if Zinnie's wings are feathered or scaled (or if it matters?)?
@sera they're already working with Via rn. Also Cress describing Aerona as snobby is not me saying she actually is snobby, it's just how Cress feels
-Cress-
Cress yawned as the experiment rambled on. She hadn't yet met an experiment who was so snobby; she was irritated but also bored by this. When she was finished, Cress said, "What are you telling me that I don't already know? This was Adine's idea, anyway. Save your boring science rants for her, not me." She blinked. "Oh, and only my friends call me Cress."
She turned to Adine and raised an eyebrow. "I'd prefer not to give her cancer, if it can be avoided. We might consider something simpler."
@Peri: I don't think so; maybe Aerona just told her at some point? Also, keep forgetting to say this, but I agree with BB that it would be a bit rushed to have the students discover a plan for escape right now. If everyone else wants to, though, I can definitely work with that :)
/Relven/
The experiment sat down on the floor, and Leskie and Rel got chairs. How long is this going to take? Rel wondered as the experiment started talking.
"Well, for physical abilities, I was given enhanced senses, like hearing, smell, and sight. I have retractable claws and fangs and this tail. I have incredible endurance, speed, strength, agility, and balance." He pulled his shirt upwards, and Relven lifted his eyebrows at the obvious physical strength of the experiment. 423 smirked. Wait, don't tell me he thought I was jealous...
"As for other abilities," the experiment continued, "I can see and manipulate emotions. Everyone has an aura of what they're feeling," he added. "I can read those, and also some thoughts associated with strong emotions. It's a little wacky though when I'm feeling strong emotions too. Some of your friends may be feeling more empathetic than usual. Then I can access memories and project them into the air. Mine or someone else's."
"That's quite a display," Rel remarked. But could experiments really manipulate emotions? Who had discovered how to do that? It would have been all over BIG by now if someone had. For a moment he had the idea of challenging the experiment to manipulate his feelings, but he didn't really want his feelings manipulated, and anyway, he somehow couldn't feel that angry. "Well," he added, turning to Leskie, "what should we do? I think we could probably try something like - trying to make him insuceptible to pain." He watched the experiment out of the corner of his eye.
*Adine*
"Interesting idea," Cress said. "When we're giving soldiers wings, we're going to need them to grow in quickly. But we will also need a method that will be gentle and will not cause much pain or discomfort." She frowned, then turned back to Adine. "Alright, Adine. Where should we start?"
"Well -" Adine was beginning, but she was interrupted by Aerona, who gave a snort.
"You're Cress, right?" she asked. "Here's the thing. The process of the avian DNA of choice combining with human DNA is extremely painful. The DNA itself needs to completely recode which exhausts a lot of resources. Unless you're pre-preparing an army of avian soldiers, it's not going to work that fast." She pauses. "Oh, and I'm pretty sure you need to speed up the rate of cell division and feather growth in my wings for these to kick in faster, but that could be cancerous."
Adine frowned too, still staring at her clipboard and recalling everything that she had learned. "You're right," she said, "but there still might be a way to do it - easily and gently," she added, to both of the girls with her. "First, for just the DNA problem, I think there are ways of recoding it from beforehand so that the actual person's body doesn't have to do that. Second, we could either find something to prevent cancer and apply that first, or we could possibly, sort of, add cells?"
- sounds good, peri. :) lol don't worry. no offense taken, aerona is meant to be kind of an annoying know-it-all here -
AERONA
"You talk about me as if I'm not here," I reply with a smile, my legs kicking up plumes of water. "I'd prefer not to be given cancer."
I tilt my head, my pale yellow eyes staring into Cress's soul. "Well. I think I'll call you Cress, thank you very much. Bored by it? Find your own solution. See if it kills me. If it does..." I giggle and mock-slash my neck with a finger. "It won't end up well for you."
My legs thunk twice on the glass, and in a few seconds, a tail thumps back. Good. Koi's still safe.
"Anyways!" I smile. "Adine, right? I like you. You're cool. If you've got any questions on how things work, let me know. After eavesdropping on a few conversations, I think I'm getting the hang of this whole science thing."
- yeah so aerona can science. but only biology + chemistry. she probably couldn't count past 10, lol -
{Aly}
"Uh, how long is 'temporary?'" the experiment asked aloud.
"Just to the end of lab, maybe?" Lee said. "But yeah, the ingredients sound great! I'm thinking we'll need to also angle the feathers certain ways so they reflect back different colors in different lights, more rainbow-y. "Aren't you excited?" she asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "This is gonna be so fun!"
Aly smiled. She loved Lee's enthusiasm for science (or maybe it was helping Catastrophe). However, the experiment didn't look as happy. Maybe they didn't like rainbow, or something. Either way, it would only last to the end of the period, so she didn't see the problem in that. “Yep,” she agreed. “I'll go gather the materials from the supply room.” She headed over to the supply room and began gathering the color pigments needed for the rainbow.
&Leskie&
The experiment sat down on the floor, and Leskie and Rel got chairs. Leskie tapped her fingers, waiting for Avi to start.
"Well, for physical abilities, I was given enhanced senses, like hearing, smell, and sight. I have retractable claws and fangs and this tail. I have incredible endurance, speed, strength, agility, and balance." He pulled his shirt upwards, and Relven lifted his eyebrows. Leskie felt amused.
"As for other abilities," the experiment continued, "I can see and manipulate emotions. Everyone has an aura of what they're feeling," he added. "I can read those, and also some thoughts associated with strong emotions. It's a little wacky though when I'm feeling strong emotions too. "That's quite a display," Rel remarked. "Well," he added, turning to Leskie, "what should we do? I think we could probably try something like - trying to make him insusceptible to pain."
“We could,” Leskie agreed. “But…it could be dangerous, you know. Pain is what keeps us from constantly hurting ourselves, so doing that could have many consequences. We could, I guess, if we made it temporary to test it first. I'm sure there's a good reason why no one has really done that so far, though.” Leskie glanced at the experiment for a few moments, thinking. “What about…water-breathing? What are your experiences with water?” she asked the experiment.
-Avi-
Ugh. Of course he just had to have the students who actually wanted to do something big and get top grades. Why couldn't he just have someone who just left him alone and didn't do anything? Making him insusceptible to pain? Really? They obviously didn't know how much pain he would have to go through before he didn't feel it anymore.
Avi watched their little exchange and felt his anger come back tenfold. He wasn't an object!
Leskie turned back to him, staring at him for a few short moments. He stared back, unblinking. "What about water-breathing? What are your experiences with water?"
Avi made a face of disgust. "I have feline DNA woven throughout my body. I'll pass on that one." He didn't even know if vetoing was an options, but he hoped they would listen. Cat and water just did not mix.
Oh no, I'm so sorry - when I posted Adine's last part, I hadn't seen that Cress had already been continuing. If you'd like I can rewrite Adine's POV, or I suppose we could let it slip...? I wasn't ignoring your part or anything, though; so sorry that I didn't see that :(
Sorry this took so long Peri! I have an idea for an expiriment too i just haven't done as much development, so if it's still okay to post that I probably will have that in a bit
Spiderwort hesitates. It’s true he doesn’t want to hurt the experiments if he can help it. All of it makes him feel sick, trapped like he used to be, even though it doesn't affect him one bit. And anyway, he cares about BIG’s campus, not its goals. But Colin always has hurt them. Why is he changing now?
Finally, he asks "Help - how?"
@Amethyst: it's not a big deal, don't worry! You can rewrite it or let it slip; whatever you feel like.
@Blackfooted Bobcat: sure you can still do your experiment charrie! And I'm not sure if it was just Spiderwort's perception of Colin, but for clarity: Colin has never hurt an experiment. I've said in one of his POVs that he does stuff like make them physically stronger, give them better immune systems, that sort of thing. I did this on purpose to put him in a sort of gray area; he still changes the experiments, but only in ways he feels are for the better.
-Cress-
At this rate, the experiment wasn't making any sense. If she were to die, BIG wouldn't get angry with Cress. The experiments were there for the students to learn science with, anyway. Mistakes were expected.
"Can we just get started?" Cress sighed, frustrated. "I'm just trying to make it to archery. I don't care about science, and I have no desire to listen to a particularly pompous experiment talk about it." She looked up to the experiment, her teeth gritted. "Call me Crescent."
With no desire to hear from the experiment anymore, Cress turned her back from AA-573 to Adine. "Okay, whatever we're doing, let's do it."
*Zinnia*
Until the end of lab? Alright, sure. Via would probably like it.
Zinnia stood quietly and let the students talk about them like they weren't there. They were used to this.
-Colin-
"Help - how?" Spiderwort said.
"I dunno. I've never worked with you before." Colin quirked an eyebrow. "I wanna see what you can do." He turned and headed over to Via, and after a few steps he looked back to Spiderwort. "So are you coming?" He asked hopefully.
"We could," Leskie said. "But...it could be dangerous,
it temporary to test it first. I'm sure there's a good reason why no one
are your experiences with water?" she added to the experiment.
"I have feline DNA woven throughout my body," the experiment said, evidently repulsed by the idea. "I'll pass on that one."
Rel
smiled - not that science class usually made him feel much like
smiling. "Cats and water? I see your point. You could have mentioned the
feline DNA before, though. Anyway, if it isn't that, we could try
something simple, like extra dexterity or being able to temporarily defy gravity. That would be
easy and quick, and then we'd leave you alone. Would that be good?"
*Adine*
"You talk about me as if I'm not here," Aerona said. "I'd prefer not to be given cancer. Well. I think I'll call you Cress, thank you very much. Bored by it? Find your own solution. See if it kills me. If it does..." She giggled. Of all things. "It won't end up well for you. Anyways! Adine, right? I like you. You're cool. If you've got any questions on how things work, let me know. After eavesdropping on a few conversations, I think I'm getting the hang of this whole science thing."
Cress was looking completely irritated, and Adine could more or less sympathize - Aerona seemed unaware of how airily frustrating she was being, which only made it more irritating. "Can we just get started?" Cress demanded. "I'm just trying to make it to archery. I don't care about science, and I have no desire to listen to a particularly pompous experiment talk about it. Call me Crescent." Those last words sounded ominous, and with them, Cress flounced around to face Adine. "Okay, whatever we're doing, let's do it."
So now I'm stuck with two partners I can't stand, Adine thought crossly, turning away from Cress in turn. Her roommate's highhandedness was getting to her as much as the experiment's. But if she showed that they had irritated her, it would probably only be worse. "If we can figure out what this 'whatever we're doing' is, it would probably help," she said levelly, glancing out at the rest of the room. "Making the wings grow faster is going to be complicated. So...?" She met Cress' eyes, her own determined. You can't just let me do all the work, Cress.
-Cress-
"Can't we just make her stronger or something?" Cress whispered. "I know how to do that. It's simple. Maybe we could make her more agile and aware of her surroundings, making it easier for her to dodge and hit hypothetical opponents. We'd want to do this by enhancing her senses…"
Cress started to sketch out a brain. It wasn't a very good sketch, but if Adine complained Cress would just tell her to sketch a new one. "So I think we should use… what are they called… you know, those brain-connect computers to tap into her brain and go from there." She took a breath. "There. That's my idea. Don't say I never did anything in lab class."
Aerona raised an eyebrow, flicking her legs against the tank in annoyance, splashing water all over the floor.
"I'm strong enough, thanks. Your data will be flawed, due to the fluctuations in my abilities between day and night."
She yawned. "By the way, because of the DNA that's been injected in me, I don't have the brain of a regular human. All my scans are in the corner, in that folder over there."
"Anyways. Sorry if I'm being annoying. I'm tired. I think I'm gonna take a nap."
I settle down in the corner of the tank, curled up against one of the sides.
