Music Club

So for my CBversary a few people said they wanted to do this. I am working on a Little Lost Library revival but that will probably take a while. In the meantime, here's the music club!

This is for anyone who loves music and wants to discover new artists. To join, just comment saying you want to join. Next Friday, we'll start rotating, starting with me and then in order of who commented. Anyone can join the rotation at any time! If you comment saying you want to join, you'll be added to the end of the rotation.

The way it will work is each week, the next person in the rotation picks an album to reccomend, and everyone listens to it. Once you've listened to the album, say a little about what you thought of it! Doesn't have to be too much, just something like, "I enjoyed it" or "It wasn't really for me" and maybe something like "___ was my favorite song" or whatever.

I think that's it! We'll start on the 26th :D

i'm not really a big fan of country, so honestly i'm a bad person to review any country music, so i'll just say the singer is very talented. that's cool. and i did listen to it all, because i have an obligation. i'm no monster!

Ok, here's as far as I got into lor:

Bonum - huh. Sorta chant-likey like sweeping you into a spell, you're now entering this fairy-tale like land, delicate piano sort of so cool, wow voices are so pretty and delicate as well, like butterfly wings or faltering wingbeats or whatever if that makes sense?? I like how it takes its time and doesn't need to rush and is so soothing and wow it's beautiful already, 1st song on the album :) and I love the lyrics too though I'm too lazy to even try to interpret them :) and such a nice ending too... huh. cool title, too. I won't pretend to understand though :)

Cinnamon - ooh really like the beginning, sorta like hinting for something more, ooh... interesting how the piano accompanies the voice... the music really brings you in and sways you, I love it... ohhhh. And these lines: "Planes are meant to fly/That's how it is it drags them down/I don't like highness, I don't like planes/Maybe that's why I'm not a bird" <3, I really love the cinnamon chorus or whatever that is... sorta reminds me of Over My Head (?) by Echosmith, which is another song I love... ok wow this song. I think I get it now? It's lovely? <3
Windmill - listened to this one before per pangolin's monthly playlist I think? but let's listen again! oh. "Have you-" it's like so breathless but powerful how?? "He was sad but/That's okay" <3 I loved this line before I love it now. The chorus(?) really is so pretty... <3 and the ending...
Matches - this was actually my first ever lor song I think, courtesy, again, of pangolin. Love it sm <3 won't listen again though cuz limited time
The King - okay.... oh woah the voices like the tremors and it's like perfect control, love the instrumental here, and the lyrics wow ouch sorta, love the whole feel of all these songs, like, powerful, wistful, not really there but just barely... idk. Sorta nostalgic, Ig? Fairy-tale like? I wouldn't call it winter, exactly. Maybe like that place between winter and spring?? Idk.
Christmas Morning: Busza's in the Garage - oh. There's a video and... well, I can't understand the lyrics but wow. I feel like the person's... lost someone? And is lonely? But is going to make the best of it like the other person/people is still here, connecting?? And the harmonizing or whatever... vocalizations? oh.
and that's all I can do!

From what I could remember, my favorite songs were definitely cinnamon and maybe the king also? But they're all so good!!!!! I've listened to a lot of them on repeat during the break when CB was off, and also btw whenever I do this I'm not trying to analyze songs bc I don't know anything about that, just saying random thoughts :)

Alright, I listened to them all (with the exception of "The Lightning Express" which I couldn't seem to find). They weren't really for me, to be honest. I'm quite picky when it comes to country. I didn't hate them (I wouldn't even really say I didn't like them), but they were just okay for me. She has a nice voice though

so, i wasn't able to listen to all of them - i could only find like half of them where i listen to music D: i listened to some of her other songs at random, though, to sort of make up for it?? the ones i listened to were "dynamite," "country mile," "bad idea," and "home to donegal." i'd actually heard the last one before, so that was cool :D

anyway, i'm generally not a huge fan of country, but i did enjoy these! not my *favorite* songs ever, but i really liked how upbeat they were! her voice is incredible, and the lyrics were pretty clever. i especially liked the ones that felt more traditional/celtic-influenced. i think my favorite was "my home" or "home to donegal," but i also liked "bad idea" and "country mile." they felt almost nostalgic for me, strangely, even though i'd never listened to them before (aside from "home to donegal").

um, yeah!! thanks for the recommendations, Poinsettia :D

I listened to all the songs, and I thought it was pretty good! Her voice is nice. Though honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of country music.

Hillbilly Girl - I've listened to this one before (per either Poinsettia/Amethyst's recommendation) and I remember liking it... YESS love the dance and the lyrics and the beat (basically, anything with a good beat, I'm all for it :) ) and yesss love it!!!! and yess I love Lisa McHugh's voice :)

Y'all Come - I've also listened to this one - multiple times! - and love it, but idk if I have time to listen again so moving on...
The Lightning Express - ohh yayy love the music right from the start! no but srsly her voice is so, like... :DD oh wow love this one so much... like, so much...
Wrong Night - ahh I love this one so much, it's sorta like idk Hillbilly and Lightning Express combined but like idk instead of my feet it gets my heart dancing does that even make sense?!?? But YESS :) AND the lyrics from what I can hear of them - :)
Country Girl - I think Amethyst recommended this song to me? It was really good, so! The song is so fun and idk I would totally go to a party where they were playing that song :) :)
What you get is what you see - oh it's interesting how the music drops out/off instead of building up that's cool!!! :D haha the lyrics make me laugh :) and can I say again that I love her voice? Because I love her voice I could just listen to it and listen to it and listen to it... :) oh nice ending! It like jumps up and disappears instead of coming down! Idk why that popped in my mind... but, just, like, poof! :)
Court of Love - nice! I like how the lyrics, like... idk, they're truthful and honest while still being sorta... carefree? And not all like sad and stuff? But still you understand they're sad, just don't feel it? It's like, don't dwell/sulk on your problems, make a song about it and sing about it and do something about it and have a good time?? But yeah :)
I can't find my house for some reason... I MEAN, I can't find My House for some reason, not, like, my home, which I'm sitting in rn... um yeah. :) but these were all so great thank you!! I love them all, but I think my favorite song would have to be Wrong Night :)

new album! if you were worried i was going to use this club to force you to listen to the mountain goats, your fears were well-founded.

i've chosen Tallahassee, their most easily accessible album, and the first one i've ever heard. it isn't their best, but it is awesome, and it's kind of in a weird middle ground between the more lofi Older-Era albums and the more musically varied Newer-Era stuff.

the primary "story" in the album is simple and very easy to project yourself into. two people in a failing marriage move to tallahassee, to either fix their marriage, or drag each other down completely. no prizes for guessing what happens.

the album alternates between incredibly upbeat, violent, and cathartic-souning songs, and slower, quieter songs. some of the quietest songs are the most lyrically powerful songs, so don't ignore them.

my favorite song is peacocks. it's a quieter song, and the first time i heard it, i barely paid it any notice. but it's great! it's a perfect illustration of a very real-seeming moment.

my least favorite song is the house that dripped blood, but to be honest, i still love it. it just doesn't measure up comparitively. still, it has a sweet harmonica solo, so!

the album is folk-ish at points, and more like rock at others. the song small arms traffic blues has what might be some of my favorite lyrics ever.

our love is like the border between greece and albania

trucks loaded down with weapons

crossing borders every night

moon yellow and bright

there is a shortage in the blood supply

but there is no shortage of blood

the way i feel about you baby can't explain it

you got the best of my love

awesome stuff! happy listening!

It was alright, not my style, but I could see the appeal! It had a nice beat to it. My favorite song was probably Peacock. I'd give it 6/10. Thanks for suggesting it!
