POLITICS THREAD!!!!!!

This is a place for us to state, debate and discuss politics!  I encourage everyone to do so rationally and maturely, and would ask that all participants would refrain from abuse, even when in the heat of an argument, and that some of the more mature subjects would not be presented here. The Admins wll not publish any inappropriate comments.

However, I would discourage anyone from participating if they are easily offended, or dislike having their views challenged.

This may not be a popular idea, but I wanted to give people a chance to present their views and discuss the larger issues in our world today. I hope that this idea takes, and that it will also be enjoyable and informative! :)

I will begin by introducing a topic that is curently at large in America, but is also, I believe, appropriate for CB. I would ask the Admins to correct me if I am mistaken. :)

So-- what do you all think about the idea of including women in the military draft?

This thread is now closed for new comments.

I practically don't know anything about politics, but I think that if Donald Trump is elected, IT WILL BE THIS COUNTRY'S DOWNFALL. So I would vote for Clinton, even though I don't know much about her. She's a woman, which is a bonus. And she isn't Trump.

Also, here are my views on the US voting system: The electoral college is really a bad idea. A candidate who has more votes can still lose, because of our bad system. For example, if there were 3 states, two of which have 30 million people, and one of which has 40 million people. Let's say that the one with 40m has 40 electoral votes, and the other 2 have 30. In the state with 40, the candidate wins 90% of the votes. In the states with 30, he gets 40% of the votes. So the other candidate gets 60 electoral votes while he only gets 40. BUT he got more actual people to actually vote for him.

That's why I think that we should just tally up the votes of the people and then the majority rules!

@ The Military Draft Debate~

I, personally, am not sure what exactly to think about the millitary draft debate. One thing I do know, however, is this:

In ancient times, women were placed below men because of the physical strength issue. Overall, men are generally stronger than women, but women generally have more flexibillity. That is not to say that there aren't any outliers. There are plenty of strong females, and plenty of flexible men. But back when there were cavemen, men were genarally favored more because physical strength was the desirable trait of the time. This stereotype was retained for thousands of years, up until the  great empires and civilazations of today really began to take root.

Then, the Industrial Revolution came. The gender balance slowly began to tip as smarts, not strength, became the desirable trait of the time. If you were cunning and intelligent, you could make your way in the world just as well as if you were strong. And since women and men are equally smart, the balance gradually equalized.

I am not a fan of the draft system. First of all, just because women don't want to be in the draft doesn't mean men like it any better. And, women are capable of being in the army. However, there is the point that if women were drafted along with men, there would be almost nobody in that age range left in the country. Which creates a problem. Perhaps the real issue is with the draft system itself and not with any gender steriotypes.

@Presidential Candidates~

Well. Let's just say that I am not a fan of a-certain-presidential-candidate-that-hates-Mexicans-and-is-racist-and-would-make-America-look-like-a-joke. You probably know of whom I speak. But what really drove me over the edge about that candidate is that he said he would abolish, or severely limit, the EPA!!!!! That really is bad. We need our environment, and we need to take care of it!!! And some people just refuse to see that!

Hillary Clinton stated "Climate change is real. It's hurting our planet and our people. We can't afford a president that ignores the science."

About Trump: Yeah, he's a immoral, immature and inconsiderate human being- but is he really racist? He attacked the Mexican immigrants, and that's obviously horrible- although he was attacking the illegal immigrants, equally horrible, but he wasn't targeting the entire ethnic culture, only a group inside that culture.

My comments:

Isn't the Secretary of State not supposed to have a private E-mail? Apparently that didn't apply to Hilary Clinton.

Orucio says hxfn.

Yes Orucio, I toatally agree with you. This election is a hoax, and is not very fun.

Here is my rant on Donald Trump-- feel free to disagree; I like a good debate.

I see that most of us are against Trump, and I agree. It's just crazy to me that he can be winning the primaries by such a landslide. In my opinion, he is extreme, racist, and not very rational, though I understand that others think differently.

So what would happen if Trump did become president? Would it be the end of our country? Would everyone in America take a four-year vacation in Europe just to avoid him?

Let's be realistic. If Trump actually were elected president, how much could he actually do? Would he follow through with his crazy plans? I think he just says whatever pops into his head and will get him more supporters. Could you imagine anyone actually building a giant wall along the Mexican border? Or deporting all the immigrants? Or any of the other numerous things Trump has claimed to be going to do?

And even if Trump actually wanted to do any of those things, our government has such a solid foundation of checks and balances that Congress wouldn't pass anything he suggested. And Trump probably wouldn't do anything Congress suggested. So for four years the government would be at a standstill while Trump's supporters bang their heads against the wall and the rest of us smirk. And hopefully, in the next election, someone better would come along.

But even so, I'd vote for anyone over Trump.

Any thoughts?

We do have a system of checks and balances, and Trump is a lot of talk, but I believe he would make use of the highly unconstitutional executive orders. Part of me really dislikes Trump, but another part is reveling in the destruction of the Republican establishment. Don't get me wrong, nominally I'm a Republican, but the establishment generally picks a few winning candidates, that get all the press coverage, while other candidates are subject to numerous hit pieces, or just completely ignored.

I think it would mostly us losing standing in the world community. The president is our figurehead, and put together people like Obama (whatever you think about his policies, he is very polite and articulate) show that we can be polite and reasonable. However, a loud, brash, rude president who is frankly rather immature is NOT a good figurehead.

I am violently against both Trump and Clinton.

Lots of people have been asking why on earth Trump is doing so well.

There is a probable theory, which I think strikes very near the mark. To explain it, I'm going to do a quick history-time flashback:

After World War I, Germany was in shambles. The government and economy was falling apart. The German people were now stuck in a weak, crumbling country, laid low and ashamed before all the nations, and they had little chance to rebuild their beloved land, or their own futures. They no longer had any kind of control over their country. Their voices fell upon deaf and powerless ears. They saw that the land they loved was not the same.

And the people were angry. The elder generation missed the old days when their Mother Germany was great and glorious and prosperous, and the new generation felt frustrated and as angry as their seniors. Wouldn't you be?

And then along came Hitler. And, as we all know, the vast, sweeping majority of the Germans recieved him with open arms.

If you ever take the time to watch a few of his campaign speeches-- he doesn't sound at all appealing. He was obviously a blood-thirsty tyrant.

But do you think the Germans cared? They were angry. They were desperate. They didn't care how immoral Hitler was. And he seemed to listen to them, to care, to share their anger.

He promised to make Mother Germany great. He promised power and all the former glory of the nation. He delivered especially to the young, telling them that they would build up Germany again, that they were important, that they were vital to the grand new country he was going to build.  And besides, the Germans probably figured that you fight war-lords with a war-lord. They didn't care about Hitler's morality-- they saw only that he could do what he said he could.

And he could. He did it. He made Germany great.  But, in doing so, he destroyed it.

That, I believe, is what is going on with Donald Trump today.

Some American people are angry. A certain Supreme Court decision that I shouldn't have to name pushed us over the edge. They do not see America as their country anymore. The land they knew and loved is not the same. And some people are scared-- the Islamic attacks are taking place here in America. They don't feel like Washigton D.C. is listening, or that it even cares. These Americans may feel that our nation, our futures and lives, have been taken out of our hands.

And then here comes Trump. He is obviously a self-centered tyrant.

Do you think we care? Here, at last, we think, is a self-made man, someone who has not been churned out of the governmental system. He doesn't try to satisfy us with empty words or roundabout ploys. He doesn't avoid or ignore our questions and demands. He listens. He cares.

Some people think he will protect us from the dangers of the world, the dangers the current government just doesn't seem to be able to face. They think he will completely remodel the entire governmental system and make America great again, if he is elected. But I think he will also destroy it. You can't fight evil with evil, or anger with anger, or ruthlessness with ruthlessness. But his supporters are too angry to stop and think about that.

Besides the angry Americans, there are also some who have stopped caring all together. These see Trump as a bomb that they are tossing at Washington D.C.  Sort of like "here's this guy! See what you make of HIM!"  Because he is, they think, apart from the system, they think he will destroy the system-- that the government won't know what to think of him, will be disrupted.

Some are so disgusted with everything that's happening that they have chosen what is being called the Benedict Option. In summary, it means that you take up your marbles and go home. These people isolate themselved from all governmental issues. They don't vote. They withdraw into their communities to watch the coming storm.

I think the election of Hillary Clinton will build upon the anger and bitterness of many Americans and continue to weaken, drain, and divide our country. Personally, I'm quite glad that I'm not old enough to vote.  If I was, I'd vote for Cruz. Yes, I know he's not perfect, but right now his only crime is that he was born in Canada. (Of American parents, why is that an issue?) As a side note, I think that the terms 'Conservative' and 'Liberal' should be interchanged. Maybe I'll take that topic up later when I have more time.

Cruz said, "The problem with climate change is there's never been a day in the history of the world in which the climate is not changing."

He also believes in flat taxes (which it says on his website), where a billionaire and a homeless person would have the same tax rate. [A flat tax means everyone pays the same percentage of their income. 10% for a billionaire would be much more than 10% of no income. Admin]

Oh, sorry about that. Were the other subjects not appropriate or something?

One of your topics is not suitable for our youngest Chatterboxers, and about the other: We can't take time to check everything submitted to us for accuracy. We are trying to allow discussion of the candidates, allowing each person to express his/her opinion, but we won't post specific statements unless we have checked it out to be true. And taking a statement out of context can be misleading.

Esthelle, that was amazing! Your writing is really insightful and captures the essence of the Trump phenomana.

On Ted Cruz, I think he is probably the best candidate out there, but some of his policies are decidedly neocon. For example, on his website he implies about how it's a bad thing that we are no longer able to maintain a carrier presence in the Arabian Gulf. I guess Cruz might do some good things while president, but I find it hard to believe he would actually live up to his promises. Thank you so much for making this thread, it's really great to be able to debate my political views.
