Story Chain!

Chatterbox: Inkwell

Story Chain!

Story Chain!

I think it would be fun to start a story chain. Each person can write a sentence or paragraph to the story. I'll begin...

Kelsey Rose woke up and sighed. It was the first day of school in a new town...

Ok, you continue the story. Don't be afraid to add mythical creatures, or wild adventures to the story.

As she races through the door, she hears it slam shut behind her. Turning around, she notices a short, tufty-haired boy standing with his back against the polished mahogany. Kelsey turns on him angrily when she realizes there is no way out of the room she has just entered. "What do you want with me?!" she exclaims, balling her hands into fists.

The boy gives her a small, twitchy smile. He doesn't look very dangerous (he might be about twelve), but then again, neither did Meredith and Amnester. "You're Kelsey, right? My name's Iggy."

Kelsey shifts her stance to remain stable in the off chance that he turns out to be Unspeakably Evil and runs at her with a Concealed Pointy Object. "What do you want with me?" she repeats, more confident now and considerably more authoritative.

Iggy swipes a clump of dark brown hair out of his eyes. "You're the linixie that Mer and Am want." He seems intent on repeating known truths until he can function properly. "Actually, what I wanna say is I'm on your side. I saw the whole thing - you getting captured and all. I've never liked Am and Mer's never nice to me. So I was wondering... Can I come with you?"

Kelsey hears Sophie's voice in her head again. Kelsey, where are you? What's taking you so long?

Somebody stopped me. He says his name is Iggy and he hates Amnester and Meredith, also he wants to come with us.

She can practically hear Sophie's exasperated sigh. Run him through the Sidekick Scen. I don't have time to tell you how to do it all but the instructions should be on the box.

Kelsey doesn't have the time to wonder what a Sidekick Scan is before a large cardboard box pops into existence in front of her. Opening it, she sees a device that looks like a thermometer. Attached to the end is a tag that reads "Official Sidekick Scan. Just stick in potential sidekick's mouth and press the button."

She does just that, not paying attention to Iggy's bewildered questions. In exactly three seconds, the thermometer beeps, and the display on the handle reads "Adequate for Sidekick."

"I'll take that as a 'good enough'," Kelsey sighs. "Iggy, do you know how to get out of here?"

"Of course I do. I'm half-gargoyle, that's my specialty." Iggy winks, looking much less twitchy now, and kneels down to the stone floor. Placing a hand in the center of a tile, he pushes and it cracks in half.

The entire floor disappears, and they find themselves falling through the sky, somehow above where they had originally been.

I thought we needed another character. But one who wasn't trying to kill/imprison/steal their powers.

All of the sudden, Frank's pegasi swooped down and caught Kelsey and Iggy before they ended up falling. "Thank-you", Iggy said in his simple voice.

"Where are we going Frank?", Kelsey asked. "Back to the strawberry. I think we are done with this adventure", Frank said. "But what about the MacGuffin?" Kelsey asked. " Kelsey, you have found the MacGuffin. You found it when you believed in the power of friendship", Sophie replied.

The pegasi flew, and Kelsey listened to the steady rhythm that reminded her of home. "Frank, how and when am I supposed to get home?", Kelsey questioned. "Kelsey, Amnester is still out there and he is more furious than before. You'll have to be brave. You're not going home for a while", Frank said.

Kelsey began to cry, she missed her family, even her annoying brother Andy. "It's OK, Kelsey," Sophie soothed, "Look, we're almost back to the strawberry!" She pulled out a magic map that showed the location of the strawberry and where they were now.

The pegasi flew to the strawberry - or what used to be the strawberry. The only thing left was a large pile of rubble. "Amnester", Frank said.

Kelsey stared at the pile of red rubble. "Amnester," Frank said darkly. Tears started to stream down Sophie's face. "Now what?" Kelsey asked in a small voice. "I don't know..." Frank replied. Anger started to course through Kelsey. How could he do this? Why? Just because she was some silly linixie? He's a power-hungry monster! "Whoa!" Frank said, startled, staring at Kelsey. The tips of her hair had caught fire. "Guess that's what happenes when linixie's get mad," Iggy said, eyebrows notched. He seemed a lot more focused, more alert. "Yes," Kelsey said, fists clenched. "I am mad! I'm going to fix this! Back up!" She sprouted her fairy wings and shot up in the air. She wasn't exactly sure what all she was capable of, but she just did it as she thought and felt. She gazed at the pile of rubble, then raised her arms, hands spread. She concentrated. Then, the linixie power took over. Her eyes changed, and began glowing a violent shade of violet. The ground began to shake. Frank, Iggy, and Sophie all backed up even more so. Then, beams of light appeared, intertwining themselves, making beams, and pillars. Walls shimmered into existence. It all began to take on the look of a house. Finally, several minutes later, Frank, Sophie and Iggy were staring at a large strawberry red mansion. It had a wrap-around porch, pillars evenly spaced, and a second floor porch. The roof was made of deep blue shingles, and windows were spaced on both levels every few feet. The glow died from Kelsey's eyes. The rush was gone, and she dropped from the sky, thoroughly spent. She nearly crashed to the ground, if Frank hadn't expected this, and caught her. "Nice!" Sophie said grinning! "This is incredible!"

Somebody shakes my shoulder. I struggle into wakefulness, only to find that my vision has been obscured by a white landscape broken only by regularly-spaced blue lines.

I stare at it, distantly curious of how such a phenomenon could come about until the same somebody peels the notebook off of my face and forces me to sit up. I rub the heel of my hand at my eye. "What do you want, Ilene?"

"Alice, you have locked yourself in your room for almost twelve hours already," Ilene scolds me. "You haven't eaten anything. For all I know you could be wasting away!"

I brush her off and return to my story. "There's a lot of stuff happening right now, and I still haven't come up with a good name. And there's a new guy, too!"

"You haven't gotten any sleep, Alice. Any real sleep," she adds when I open my mouth to argue that she found me snoring. She hoists me up bodily and sits me on my bed, then exits the room with my notebook under her arm. "I'll know if you're not asleep," she calls over her shoulder as she shuts the door.

I barely have enough energy to stick my tongue out at the door before I fall over, snoring before I hit the pillow.

Kelsey haunts me in my dreams.

"A linixie?" she says, "what kind of writer thinks of a linixie?"  She storms off and flies away.  The scene melts from a luminescent cave to my English teacher's classroom.  The useless posters are plastered on the wall at precise angles, but it looks like all the ink flowing out of the red pens that scream, "Punctuation is Key?" is blood.  I look at my teacher, and she comes at me, little bat wings shooting out of her back.

"You think you'll ever be a writer, you fool?  You'll never do anything with this manure of a manuscript!" The evil looking pencils start singing, as the teacher closes in on me.

I wake up feeling discouraged. Maybe this story isn't as amazing as Ilene made it out to be. Maybe I wasn't supposed to be a writer.

I forced myself to get out of bed and talk to Ilene.

"Oh, you're up! Now, let's talk about your story," Ilene said, with a smile. "Ilene, I don't think I'm cut out to be a writer. I mean who thinks of a linixie?" I said, completely doubting my writing.  Ilene stared at me, probably not expecting me to be like this. "Alice, I have an idea. Why don't we sit down in front of the computer and email your favorite author, Christy Burch," Ilene suggested, well more like demanded. "Ilene, are you trying to humiliate me!" I exclaimed.

She led me over to the computer and typed Christy Burch. Hundreds of websites stared at me from the screen. Ilene clicked on the first one, and found her email. Then, she had me type...

Dear Christy Burch,

My name is Alice Newman and I'm trying to write a story for my English class, but I'm not sure it is any good. Would you mind reading over it and give me feedback?

Thank-you,

Alice Newman

It didn't take long for Christy to write back.

Dear Alice Newman,

Thank-you for allowing me to read your story. I loved it! Your story is filled with creativity and it is original! Your story is good, and if I were you I'd keep writing, and letting me know your progress.

Here is some advice: Whenever you start doubting your writing, think good thoughts. In other words, don't put yourself down. If you have trouble going on, look for inspiration from other authors, or the world around you. Inspiration is never too hard to find.

Your fellow author,

Christy Burch

I reread the email over and over. My story was amazing and Christy Burch thought it was original! I couldn't wait to start writing again!

Ilene hurried me off to finish what would happen to Kelsey, so I started writing.

The last thing Kelsey remembered was Sophie's massive grin, then she blacked out. She awoke to the feeling of soft sheets. She blinked her eyes open, sat up, and gazed around. The room was pink and white striped. A vanity stood over against one wall, a closet across from the bed. Or, beds. Kelsey realized her bed was one of two. They were just alike, green head and footboards, with a cream bedspread with flowers all over it. Identical plaques hung above the beds. Hope, Faith, Charity. A table stood between the beds, and an armouire stood by the window. All the furniture was old fashioned, like it was from the early 1900's. "Oh good, you're up!" Sophie's voice floated across the room. Kelsey hadn't noticed her at first. She sat by a lamp, curled up in a large armchair, again, one of two. "You did a wonderful job! The house is huge and beautiful! And this," Sophie said, waving her arm at the room, "is ours!" Kelsey swung her legs around and rubbed her head. She vaguely recalled using her powers, in a way she had never even known she could. But it was all so fuzzy. She tried to stand up, but nearly fell over. Sophie came over and gently placed her back on the bed. "Don't try getting up too soon. You used a lot of power. Something like that leaves you pretty drained." "What happened, exactly?" Kelsey asked. "Oh, you got mad that Amnester destroyed the house, so you flew up, and rebuilt it into this beautiful mansion! After that, though, you fell out of the sky, Frank caught you, and brought you up here. He told me to stay with you, in case you awoke, tied getting up, or doing something rash. He's currently doing a cross between lookout and exploring." Kelsey thought about that. "Well," she laughed, "I guess he knows me well enough. I do want to get up and see what I did." With Sophie's help she got up and walked out of the bedroom. The first thing that met her eyes was...

Taday! Sorry, but I REALLY wanted to design their room! Sort of Anne Shirley's bedroom from the movie. I've always wanted my room to look like that.

The first thing that met her eyes was a frog. Kelsey didn't know exactly why a frog would be there so she gave Sophie a quizical look. "Oh, ya, we sometimes let smaller animals in the building, so long as they have good behaviour." Sophie laughed. Oh, okaaay Kelsey thought. She decided that there had to be more to see than just a frog, so she turned a way from Sophie to see what there was. she saw that the floor was ivory-white carpet and only about nine feet long from her door to the edge. on the edge of the floor was a delicate yet sturdy wooden railing made out of either cherry or mahogany wood. She wasn't quite sure. She couldn't really notice much though, because focousing gave her a slight headache. Still Kelsey did notice alot of natural light coming from the windows below. "Here, follow me, I have a feeling you're going to love the kitchen." Sophie smiled, helping Kelsey desend the stair case that curved left alongside the strawberry's wall. When they got into the kitchen Sophie placed Kelsey on a stool at an island, and pulled out a series of foods Kelsey had never seen before. "Here, this is my favorite food to eat when I'm low on energy" Sophie said as she slid a plate of some strange colorful, yet mostly yellow, food to Kelsey. Here goes nothing, thought Kelsey as she took a bite.

Sorry if there's some wierd errors, or spelling problems, but I didn't have much time to write today.

I had expected it to either taste like mashed turnips, or rainbow sherbert. It didn't taste like either. I was so surprised by the taste, I nearly gagged on it. "It tastes like sour skittles!" Sophie just grinned. "I don't know what skittles are, but don't you just love it?" I grinned and ate some more. She was right, it did make me feel better. I started being able to focus on things more. The kitchen walls were a deep red, with white cabinets. The island was large, with a granite countertop, and three stools lining it. There was a gas-burning stove, and a huge double refrigerator. "Come on, there's more to see!" said Sophie as she dragged me away. We stopped in the living room next. It was log cabin style, with a large fireplace, a red plaid sofa, a rocking chair, and a desk in the corner. The plus was the huge flat-screen TV. We continued exploring, seeing rooms like a gym, an artroom, a library, and one that made no sense to Kelsey at all, with large balls like for exercising, a desk with a large bookshelf crammed with books, a science lab table, and many other things Kelsey couldn't even begin to explain. "Oh this is where we practice magic!" Sophie explained flippantly. Finally they walked out onto the terrace. Plants hung from hooks, creating a perfumelike aroma. Large pillars were spaced evenly along the way, and rocking chairs lined the porch. "So you're up," Frank said, walking over. Kelsey nodded. She was still taking it all in. "Good job you did," Frank continued, looking around with her. "I did all this?" Kelsey asked, still having trouble believing it. "Yup," Frank answered, the he looked serious. "Now that you're awake, there's something I want to show you."

Okay, so what happens next?

Kelsey followed Frank down the long wooden corridor. After about two minutes of walking, Frank suddenly stopped and motioned for Kelsey to stay silent. Then, he turned to the door on the right that said No Admittance. After punching in a code the door opened, revealing a dark room with a large movie screen, chairs, a table, and a few gadgets that Kelsey didn't know about.  "Frr.." Kelsey started, only to be silenced.

Frank went over to a control panel and typed some number/letter sequences in. He led Kelsey over to the chairs and a show began to play on the movie screen.

"Hello, if you are watching this show, pay attention. You will gain information that can save your life if used properly", said a voice on the screen.

"Amnester is still at large, and more dangerous than ever. There is only one more power he needs to take over the world, and that is linixie power", the voice continued.

"Legend has it that linixies only exist in the human world, but once one is found it can travel from world to world", the voice said.

"I don't appreciate being called an it" , Kelsey thought.

"Some characteristics of linixies include the ability to build things out of nothing, make friends easily, fly, change into an animal, but these characteristics vary from linixie to linixie", the voice said.

"Once a linixie enter the Thryshow World, dangerous things will happen. Buildings will be destroyed; people hurt. Thryshow will be in a state of destruction," the voice continued.

"Now this is how you save the linixie and the Thryshow World from disappearing or becoming Amnester's subjects...."

The Thryshow World is the world Amnester, Sophie and Frank live in.
