"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Oh my gosh! It's...it's...BURNING! The house! Is on fire! OHMYGOSH! GET ME OUTTA HERE! HELP!!!

" GET ME OUTTA HERE!"

I see a dark shape running towards me.

" It's OK. You're going to be OK." It's Tuma. She, using her magic, scoops the flames onto a torch. She rushes towards me. Now that the initial terror has gone, I can feel my skin agonizigly burning. I look at my arms in the light of Tuma's lamp. They are red, and in one place they are charred.

" Yeow!" I say. " This hurts! get me water! HELP! HELP!" Tuma takes a pot of blue gel out of a bag she had been carrying. She rubs some gel onto my poor, burnt arms.

" You'll have scars forever," she says. I don't tell her that my feet already do have scars from fire.

" Water. Just please, wat-" But as soon as I start to say "water", the pain lessens and a rush of calm and relief sweeps through me. But somebody must have heard my half-finished request for water. Because at that moment, a huge tidal wave rushes at us. " Where did that come from?" I scream in surprise. And then I feel myself being lifted against my will, swept up with the huge wave sweeping through the cottage. " AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" I scream all over again.

Menaya~

I run through an abandoned house; it's wood black from fire. A shadow creeps toward me, waves of black seeping toward me. Then a claw, and darkness. Fire and blood, and a voice.

AMONG THE MIST IS SOMEONE UNTRUSTWORTHY, WITH SECERTS TO LET GO. THIS PERSON WILL HELP YOU IN TIME, IF YOU MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES.

Then waves of water, fire, and rock.

I wake up, breathing heavily. What's that noise?... Wait, is that FIRE?! I jump up in my bed, only to be pushed back toward the ground by a seemingly invisible hand. An earthquake. I stumble up, looking for an exit through the fire. I race foward, wincing as flames eat through my skin.

"AHHhhhh!" I hear someone scream. My arms burn.

"HELP!" I cry out. I need water. My command is answered, but as a huge fearful wave that sweeps me through the water.

Waves of water, fire, and rock.

No. It can't be happening.

"NOOOO!! HELLPPP!! HELP ME OUTTT OF HERE!" I screech. A hand grabs me by the arm, and I'm pulled upward.

"Tha-ank you," I burst out, coughing.

"You're welcome." It's Furbin. He paddles out of the water and onto dry land.

Everyone else is over there, with scars to last them a lifetime. Saphina is coughing on the ground, while Nenyala carefully helps her up. Star is right next to her, looking into the sky dreamingly. I join them quietly.

"Wh-h-at happened?" I ask quietly.

"The elemental quartet. They... They knew I was here... I guess they planned... To destroy me," Nenyala breathes.

"We need to get to a safe place," Furbin bursts out, and then looks embarrassed.

"Of course! On the ground isn't my favorite spot," Saphina growls. She brushes her pants and comes up.

"Where are we suppose to go? This forest doesn't look like a safe place," Star nervously worries. She looks like she got the bad part of it.

"Hey! Not a-" Furbin starts, but stops himself. Gee, nicest boy I have ever known.

"I know a place," Nenyala finally replies.

The fire consumes all.

Water, Earth, Fire, Air.

Then Lightning starts. She Summons storm clouds. Lightning cracks. The rain does not extinguish the fire. Where the lightning strikes, more flames spring up.

Water, Earth, Fire, Air.

Finally, River floods it all. A huge tidal ave washes over the land.

"We shall cleanse this world of those who do not believe in Master's power!" she cries.

Water,Earth, Fire, Air.

River, Crystal, Flaimme, Lightning.

The Elemental Quartet.

*************************

Flaimme~

I plague the girl, Saphina, in her dreams that night.

Nenyala-

A tidal wave rushes at us. I put my hands out and the water splits. River hisses and tries for an ice barrage, but I'm well trained with that.

Fire comes at me, only hitting me once. I wince and bend some of the healing gel (it's water based) onto the wound and keep fighting. I manage to knock her out with an ice spike. Crystal shoots a stone at me, and I manage to push it away with telekinesis. The only real problem is lightning: I can't control it.

I dodge quickly, avoiding trees and wet ground. Unfortunately, that lands me next to the children...

I brace myself, but one of them saves me by... controlling the lightning?

I can't make out my savior's face in the dark, but he/she gasps like he/she didn't know she had this ability. The lightning stops as the person's newfound powers forces it away.

(So one of you is a lightning bender?)

Saphina~

Tuma found an abandoned shack to spend the night. After a meal of dried passion fruit, we all sink down on to the floor to sleep.

In my dreams, I see terrors.

Unicorns, dancing. I see lovely, lovely unicorns. Now they sprout wings and fly. B Ut what are they flying at? It's a huge, dancing flame. The unicorns are swallowed up, and they sriek with terror. I hear an evil laugh. Out of the fire spring monsters. Gargoyels. The pounce at me.There paws are fiercely hot. It burns. I see flowers burning. The sea burning. Tuma, Star-Ruby, Leila, Gretta, Furbin, Menaya burning. I am burning. The world is burning.

I wake up with a start. And I burst into tears. I feel cold and clammy.

"HELP!"

Leila awkwardly started talking to Tuna, "er, I sort of have these poets, a little magic, I can do a good healing spell."

Tuna nodded "Good, this will be useful in times to come, I will need all the help I can get to vanquish my enemies, help would be useful."

Furbin walked over, he growled "I will need a new pack to protect, I would like it to be this one."

Sorry that I haven't posted! Lacrosse season started up and I'm really busy!

Gretta

The fire hurt, a lot. But I only got a few minor burns.

The tidal wave was scary, but I'm a good swimmer. It didn't matter much to me.

But the lightning?

I tremble, uncontollably as the lightning hits down on the ground. And then aims straight for MIss Tuma. I scream. No, no, no. I think. Not her too. My brother already was taen by it, she can't be taken, too. I wil the lightning to stop, closing my eyes, hoping beyond hope that my greatest fear will not come true twice.

I open my eyes just in time to see the lightning bend away from me. I gasp, stumbling back, but noone seems to notice, luckily enough.

Miss Tuma leads us to a safe place, cozy and small. I settle down on the rock floor, and, terrified as I am, manage to fall asleep.

"Gretta, we can't go inside. Not while the Inspector is making his rounds," the boy told her.

"But Peder, it's lightning! Surely the inspector will understand!"

"We can't. The Inspector is merciless. YOu know that."

"Oh, come on! He can't really be part elemental. It's just a myth!"
"I'm older than you and I know bettet. We have to stay outside." The little girl folded her arms and turned away. The boy sighed and began to walk away.

Then he screamed a horrible, terrible scream and crumpled to the ground.

Struck by lightning. I mumbled those words, half asleep, memories of my perfect brother churning in my mind.

Why is it that the perfect ones always die?

I sigh and sit up, my back aching from sleeping on such a hard surface. I turn to Miss Tuma, already awake.

"What shall we do next?" I ask her, stretching.

"Well, first I need to know what your advantages are. Then I can use them, but right now, I'm at a complete loss. Like, yesterday, one of you somehow bent away lightning. None of you mentioned anything like that earlier."

So she knew. I should've guessed, seeing that it would be very hard not to notice almost being killed, then impossibly rescued.

But how can I tell them about my power when I barely know it myself?

The Elemental Quartet was in the middle of the doomsday plan. Then they saw it.

Crystal in a crystal.

Lightning in a cloud.

River in a lake.

Flaimme in her fire.

The hooded figure was calling them.

"Meet me in my realm. The plan will proceed afterward."

The voice was dark, thrumming, deep.

"Yes... Master."

****************

River, Flaimme, Lightning and Crystal walked into the Void realm. Dark violet and black. Sprinkled with stars.

And the hooded figure.

"Master..." they crooned in unison, kneeling.

"Rise, my Quartet."

"Master, why have you summoned us?" they asked as one.

"You have served me well. But there are... troubling signs."

"Whatever do you mean, Master?"

"Them. Those ragtag ones that your sister, River, has gathered."

"I have no sister, Master! Not since she vowed never to support you! And surely we can handle them."

"Good decision, River. But I am worried about them. Alone, they were nothing, nothing at all. Together, they pose a threat to you. Even to me."

"But Master, surely you are all-powerful!" Flaimme cried.

"I was exiled long ago to the Void Realm. I now cannot do anything outside it. I shall have revenge on the ones on the earth that did not know a natural-born leader when they saw one. They exiled me. Now, with your help, I shall rise again to my rightful place as ruler of the world. If you serve me well, I shall offer you a place in my new empire."

"Master... it is such an honor to help you rise again to power, and it would be an even greater honor to place in your empire. But how do you suggest we defeat them?"

"The best way to do so is to split them up. I have seeds of mistrust sowed within them. I have planted them visions of a traitor in their midst. You would do well to help those seeds grow."

"Yes, Master."

"You are dismissed. Don't disappoint me."

"Yes, Master."

Furbin~

A lump fills my throat, and I try to speak.

"Uh... Um..."

"I already know, Furbin. And so does the rest of us."

"Y-you know? Y-y-ou? Um.."

"Yes, yes, wolf-boy we have been dropping hints for a long time." Saphina snaps.

"Uh uh.... Sorry..." I mumble.

"Now, Gretta, what's yours?" Gretta's eyes widened, and she looked down."

"I-i....Icansingreallywell..."

"What's that?" Gretta sighs.

"My singing... It can entrance people... Uh..." Gretta's cheeks grew red. I looked at her sincerly.

"You don't have to talk about it anymore." I quietly say. She nods.

"Leila?"

"I have some magical powers that I got from my mum... I can't exactly control it."

"and Menyala?"

Menaya looks up and sighs.

"Do I have to say it?"

"It would be nice."

"I have...I can predict the future and...." She stops herself.

Menaya~

I stop myself. They will not know I read thoughts. I concentrate on Nenyala.

She is hiding something. But if she does not want to say, so be it. We will learn in time.

Then Furbin's.

Why is she so secretive? We could help her if it was bad.

Saphina's.

I have a feeling she's got something up her sleeve she ain't gonna say.

So they know I am hiding my other power.

I change the topic.

"And I also need to say something else..." Nenyala looks at me intently.

"I got a vision... And..." I explained what I saw. The waves of fire, water, and rock... And I'm about to explain the important part, but I stop... Why was those words so misty? I almost couldn't here it... It was as if it wasn't even real, just part of the wind... I think again.

"Is there something wrong?" Nenyala interupts my thoughts.

"Well... It's just that I got some prophecy, and it said that someone is a traitor, one of us, and they will help us in time... But... I don't believe it... It was so misty... It seemed like part of the wind... It's as if someone just edited the vision, and stuffed something else in it's place..."

"Well, we must keep an eye on each other. I have a feeling someone is tricking us... And it may be one of us."

***

I go to sleep, fearing another vision, another nightmare.

What I expect. I do get another vision... But how come I can control my thoughts?

"Menaya... Come close..." Someone whispers. I turn around, and face a girl... Made of fire.

"Dont hurt me!" I scream, backing away.

"Shhh.... Darling, I have something to say..." the lady whispers. "Long ago, the land used to be fought over and such... And a man tried to stop all of this..."

"Go on." I urge her.

"No one liked his thoughts. Everyone was too busy being selfish and rude... An someone exiled him to the Void..."

"Who?" I ask.

"If I say, you will be frightened."

"Just tell me."

"Her name... Was Nenyala... Darling, listen to me: She is trying to trick you, trying to let her rule the land... Do not follow her rules... Every night, I will visit you and help you stop her... But don't kill her..." The lady looked left and right. "If you help us defeat her and set the real ruler free... We will lift your curse of your head..."

"My... My vision seeing?"

"Yes, and even... Your prophecy nightmares... Good luck, Menaya. Good luck."

"Are you alright?" I ask Menaya in the morning. She looks at me strangely and nods.

I sigh; she must be ill.

"Tomorrow night is the Witching Hour; it will be all hallows eve. Hang a mistletoe branch above your door," I tell them.

They all nod as I pass out the branches, Furbin inspecting his and the others toying with them... except Menaya.

"Menaya, what's wrong?" I ask.

"Nothing!" she says quickly, leaving the breakfast table. The others shrug. I quietly follow her.

I'm just in time to see her toss the mistletoe in the fireplace.

I set my jaw and quickly return to the table.

The quartet has convinced her.

She must be brought back to the light.

Star Ruby~

The earthquake continues, but I am used to it now. It is only a matter of time before the water and fire sweep away our shelter. Nenyala's cottage was wrecked by the fire, and she had somehow found a place to stay that the elemental quartet's destruction didn't ruin. We all know that Furbin is a wolf and Menaya has something to hide. She is acting more irratable than Saphina lately. After the first night in the old house, fear became routine. Now, we are preparing for another night, and Nenyala is going on and on about " Witching Hour" tomorrow night. Everyone is ignoring me, they have been, but I don't mind. I am just trying to sort things out. I need a friend! Someone to trust in, but do I dare trust anyone of our little group? Why do you think of friends when everyone you cared about betrayed you? My brain interrupts. I lay my head across the pyramid shape that my folded legs have made.

" We need to talk. All of us," Nenyala demands as she steps from the doorway onto the quivering floor.

" We are obviously the ones to put a stop to the Elemental Quartet!" Nenyala continues. The others have been talking about powers and prophecies, but I have never joined the conversation. There is nothing special about me. Reluctantly, the others gather around Nenyala, except for Menaya and I.

"Everyone!" Nenyala demands. I slowly sit up and join the group and Menaya follows.

"Now. I know the subject of powers has come up before, and we have all shared our known powers, now..." Nenyala says.

"What about Star Ruby?" Gretta asks. I am startled by the sound of my name. I was just deciding that though Nenyala seems to be a good and wise person, she isn't the person I would confuse in. My brain skips on to consider Furbin for my friend as Gretta's question shatters my consideration.

" I don't have any," I state. For some reason I feel like crying. Furbin stares at me, and his eyes remind me of something, but I can't put my finger on it.

"Are you sure you don't have any?" Saphina questions.

" I am sure she has unimanible powers that maybe aren't obvious, but are just as strong as the rest of yours," a voice speaks up. It is one of the girl's voices, and not Nenyala's.

Someone just spoke up for me! I realize, brightening. I know now who my friend can be, but do I dare take the risk?

So, one of the girls charries can choose to be who Star Ruby puts her trust in as a friend.

That night, I visit her again.

"You were wise to burn the mistletoe," I croon. "Nenyala knew, I suppose, and tried to stop me from visiting. Now, you must convince Nenyala otherwise. Darling, you must not act so suspicious."

"Sorry," she says.

"Darling, it's quite all right," I reply. "Just do better next time. Now, the one Nenyala has the most trouble with, of the four of us, is Lightning."

She nods.

"Now, one of them, Gretta, she just found she can control it. The one way to stop Nenyala is to seperate her from Gretta." Menaya nods again. "This is all I can do tonight."

"Wait!" she calls. "Is it true that it is the Witching Hour tonight?"

"Yes, darling, but fear not. I myself will ensure your safety."

I'm planning to do so, too. She's too valuable to lose.

Nenyala-

(next morning)

(SIDE NOTE: one of the quartet (river, probably, as she has a grudge) wiped Nenyala's memory of Menaya burning the mistletoe.)

"The Witching Hour is tonight," I tell the children calmly.  "Be careful. Spirits are about."

"Yes'm," Furbin says, food in his mouth.

"Yes ma'am," says Gretta.

"Okay," says Saphina.

"Alright," says Leila.

Star nods politely.

"Can Gretta and I go gather nuts in the woods for the hazelnut soup?" asks Menaya.

"Alright," I say, though something tells me that maybe I shouldn't. Why? Menaya seems kind.

"Come on, Gretta," says Menaya. They leave and go int the woods.

I shouldn't be worried. I'm sure they'll be back soon.

(Okay, so I was thinking that tonight Lightning comes and almost kills Nenyala and Flaimme tells the others what has been going on. Gretta and Menaya come back. Gretta is heartbroken and Menaya is triumphant. Menaya is then thrown out and realizes that the prophecy about an evil person did come true... SHE was the traitor.)

I lie awake a long time, staring into the darkness. It's All Hallow's Eve tonight. Even though I hung the mistletoe, I'm still worried sick. What if Peder's ghost comes? What if he's angry at me? I'm sorry, Peder. I think. If I didn't get so upset and turn away, you wouldn't have walked to  that place, and you wouldn't have been struck...

I repeat those words over and over in my head until I finally become to tired to keep my eyes open.

"Litlle Gretta, you needn't be afraid."

It's a lady. Made of lightning! I jump back, horrified.

"I won't hurt you, and neither will your powers. You can trust me!" Somehow, her static-y words appeal to me.

"There is one you cannot trust, however. You must stay away from her, as far as possible. One of your friends will help you."

One of your friends will help you. Those words ring in my head as I wake up that morning. I haven't any friends. Miss Nenyala is nice, though. Maybe the lightning lady meant her.

I don't know why I stood up for Star Ruby, maybe it was one of those times that I could just tell things about her. Anyway, now Nenyala said it was "Witching Hour." That sounded lovely. I rolled my eyes. I walked up to Star Ruby. "Sorry if I embarrassed you earlier," I began. "I just sort of, know things and blurt them out randomly." She looked up at me, surprised. "You were the one that stood up for me?" she asked. "I certainly wasn't embarrassed just, surprised." I grinned and sat down next to her; we were striking up a good conversation about our homelands, when I saw a flash of light and someone cackling in the distance. "What was that?" I shouted, jumping to my feet. State Ruby shouted, "Come on!" and ran towards the commotion. I followed closely behind.
