Chatterbox: Inkwell

Kendra and Meadow

Kendra and Meadow are together for a fantasy story.

Rules:
1. No fighting.
2. No taking over the story.  Work it out with your partner so you can both do the story equally.
3. Keep the story PG.
4. GloWorm says to always keep to your genre, but I disagree: if you really want to, change genres.
Thank you very much! :)

Hey Meadow. I'm really sorry. I have been going through some stuff, but i'm back now!!! I'll try to write as much as possible, but I'll apologize in advance if I don't write right away. Hope this it all right.

Finally deciding, she raced to Parlan. She had to stop this, she knew, but how? Faolen had never told her about how to stop a spirit. Saffron could see that the spirit was slowly forcing out Parlan's soul. She grabbed her bag, reached into it and pulled out the first thing her hand came in contact with. And without thinking she hit Parlan over the head with it. His body went still and the spirit paper flutteredfrom his hand onto the ground. Ink words gathered back onto the shred of parchment. Parlan's body was llimp, unmoving and cold. Then suddenly he shot upright, his hand flew to his chest and he heaved heavy breaths. For the first time Saffron looked down into her hand and saw an ornate wooden bauble. It had many swirls and alien words inscribed into it.

Parlan looked up at her and shouted, “What are those things!” His eyes were wide with fear.

Saffron didn’t answer. She was still looking at the sphere in her hands.

Awilialooked over her shoulder. “Saffron” she whispered, “what just happened?”

Saffron shook her head. “I don’t know. I’ve never seen this before."

Parlan snorted, “Well aren’t you going to apologized! You just hit me on the head with a wooden ball!”

Awilia snapped back at him, “Shut it! She just saved you life!”

OK, yes, I finnally saw this!  I've been gone from Chatterbox for a few days.  Busy with cleaning for the party, having a party, and cleaning up from the party.  Fourty people.  A lot of people.  And I shall now write more of the storey.

Parlan stared at Awila, then at Saffron.  He did not speak, obeying Awila.  Or it might have been from shock or disbelieving.  "Repeat?"

"She saved your life." Awila, then, had her trun at staring, waiting for Parlan to start arguing.

But he did not.  He just sat there, pondering silently of what to say.  "Well, thank you, Saffron."  The 'thank you' was the opposite of loud.

"Your welcome."  The manners that had happened were surprising the people that uttered the words.

But then the usuall normalness overtook them.  Parlan got up, loudly walking out of the room while Saffron stuffed the things that had come out of the bag back in.  Awila sat down on the fllor where Parlan had been.

"That was odd," Awila said.  "I think that was the first time Parlan said 'thank you.'"

Parlan then came back into the room.  "Incorrect," he said, "that was not the first time."

"When was it then?" asked Awila after Parlan hadn't said anything.

"Not telling," and then, not for the first time, Parlan ran out of the room.

Awila looked back to Saffron.  She was holding the wooden circle, poking it, carressing it, and then staring at it again.  Saffron had pulled it out after she'd put it into the bag whle Awila and parlan had had their short conversation.

Saffron ran her finger over a rune that looked like a snake, and a faint click came from the thing she held in her hand.

Here, i hope it's ok. Change anything you like. :)

“Awila!” Saffron hissed, “It moved.”
Awila looked at it, “Howso?” she asked, shuffling closer to have a better view of the wooden orb.
Saffron pointed out along scratch, the was no doubt put there by accident. “See that scratch, in themiddle it doesn’t line up.” Saffron ran her hands along the rest of the sphere,“it’s odd, because the runes all a line.
Awila nodded, “Perhaps it’s because the scratch is not suppose to be there, maybe the runes only line up the rest of the markings. “I’ve never seen runes like these.” She glanced up atSaffron, “while i was sick Nelson brought me books to read from the castle library. I poured over the ones about ancient runes, but i’ve never seen any like these”.

“Is there anyone aroundhere that we could ask about this? You know someone we could trust?” Saffron asked.
Awila thought about it asshe handed the sphere back to Saffron, “Well the blacksmith in town knows quite a lot about everything. We could ask him. He and his wife helps us out when times are hard, we can trust him.”
Saffron bit her lip, “alrightlet’s try it. But for now, shall we keep it between us?”
                 Awila nodded in agreement.

Tlestine watched her husband fixing the broken horseshoe in fascination.  Even though she had seen him do it many times, the red-hot metal was just as beautiful as it always was.  His many tools hung on nails stuck in the potruding wood from the cieling.  He asked her for something, and she gave it to him, carefully, it was very heavy.

A quiet knock came from the front door.  Tlestine went to get it.  She opened the door to find the sweet girl from the children's gang they called, something.  She did not remember.  And beside her stood another girl, with dark gold hair the waved around her neck and shoulders gracefully.  Her dark hazel eyes looked curiously behind Tlestine.

"Ms. Ithens, may we please come in?" asked Awila kindly.  The girl behind her followed Awila as Tlestine moved out of the way to let the two girls in.

Saffron was introduced to Rehn and Tlestine Ithens quickly. Their four children she did not meet because of their resting.

It turned out that Rehn did know about the runes on the trinket, or whatever it was, but he did not know the language in which it was written.

"I suggest you go see Nelson Isaacson for that," Rehn ended.  Saffron gasped.

"Nelson Isaacson?  I've heard of him!  His name helped me get in here!"  Saffron looked excited.

Rehn and his wife did not look surprised.  "Everyone who's been in this town for under a week knows his name.  I don't know why, they just do," the blacksmith said.

"Do you know him?" Saffron asked, "Can you introduce him to me?"

"We don't know him," Tlestine said, "But we know where he lives."

Hey Meadow. Sorry I haven't written. I have been trying to go on the computer less, which results in no Chatterbox time. :/. I was thinking about the story and was wondering what you thought of this idea. you mentioned a rune that looked like a snake, why not have that snake a water serpent that lived in streams. That way we can bring back the stream idea that we first had when we started. Let me know what you think... it doesn't matter if we use that idea or not, it was just a thought. :) Happy writing!

The streets twisted every which way. Saffron knew that she couldn’t find her way back to the blacksmith’s shop even if she tried. Rehn kept up a fast pace, Awilia matched it perfectly. Saffron however found herself falling behind, and on occasion had to jog  to keep up. Rehn abruptly stopped at a small house that was built into the wall of the city. Smoke trickled out from a chimney and dead flowers lay dejected in the flower beds.
Rehn said, “This is it, ready?”

Saffron blew out a long breath and nodded. With a wink Rehn knocked thrice on the rustic wood door. The clatter of a dropped pot sounded somewhere in the house and a dog barked loudly. “Shut it, Simon!” a voice called and the door was thrown open. Ou tpeered the face of a boy perhaps a little older then Easton. He frowned when he saw the three of them. “Can I help you?” he asked in a tone that was anything but welcoming. Rehn spoke up, “We would like to see Mr. Issacson. If that is possible.”
The boy nodded, “It is. What business is it about?”
Rehn rested a hand on Saffron’s shoulder. “The girl had a question that I could not answer. We would like to ask your master about it. If that suits well with him.”
“Very well.” He opened the door wider. “My name is Mylor, i am apprentice to Nelson Issacson”.

I am so sorry!  The last post was a week ago!  I, too, have not been going on the computer as much.  I like your idea about the rune that looked like a snake being a stream snake...  lets use it!  Now I shall write...

Saffron, Awila and Rehn shuffled into the house.  Saffron noticed Awila's eyes look down as she passed Mylor.

Mylor lead them down the hall.  The walls were covered with similar runes to the wooden sphere Saffron carried in ther hands.

As the passed by a cirtain wall, Saffron gasped.  She was the very same serpent rune that was the ball, except it was like a mountain, not a revine.  Saffron raised the circle to the wall, the wall and the ball were drawn together like negative and positive.

The ball rolled down the wall, the runes matching together.  It came to an arupt stop.  The now-stone wall slid away to form a door.

Behind the opening there were stone steps, and two girls named Saffron and Awila running down them.  Rehn and Mylor ran down after them, while Mylor was rambling on about how he'd never been here before, and how amazing it was.

They came to a fork on the path.  Mylor picked it up; the handle was shaped like a snake.  "I've seen this before," he said.  "In books, I mean.  It's supposed to represent two different water ways becoming one."

"I lived by a stream that wasn't there all the time before I came here," said Saffron.   "It was magic.  Maybe it's the smae stream!"

"Maybe," Mylor replyed as the four  continued on down the tunnel.

They came to a dead end.  A carving in the wall looked exactly like the fork.   Saffron grabbed the silver fork from Mylors grasp and pressed the fork into the carving.  A pathway came before them just like before.  They ran through it, but not before Mylor grabbed the fork from the wall.  It closed after them.  "O no!" cried Saffron.

"We can figure out a way to get out later," Awila said loudly as she ran down the path.  Adrinaline rushed through everyones veins.

heh heh... a weekend turned into a week didn't it! :P I've been writing a play for school, and it kinda has taken up most of my creativity for the week. :) hope this next part is ok. I'll let you decide were the tunnel go, as it was your idea.

Saffron followed Awila closely. She wondered aloudwere the path would lead them.
“Who know?!” Awilaanswered back. “We’ll find out when we reached it.

Rehn called from behindthem, “Hold up there! We can’t keep up with the two of ya.”

Saffronand Awila slowed down to a walking pace until Mylor and Rehn had caught up tothem. Then they burst back into a run through the dark cavernous tunnel.  Sprinting down the passageway Saffron sawthat a light was coming towards them. They kept running and then saw a torchwas attached to the wall. It was burning brightly and light up the tunnel. Itshowed that walls and Saffron saw that there were runes, pictures and numberswritten on the wall. Saffron glanced at one as they passed, it was of a human, dead and a spirit (in the form of a human) diving into the body. A crumpledspirit paper was withen reach. Saffron shuddered at this picture and keptfollowing Awila. Rehn and Mylor finally caught up to them.
“has anyone given anythought that we don’t know how to get back” He pointed out.

Saffron looked to Awila, thinking she had an idea. But she kept silent and continued to jog down thechannel. Saffron turned back to Mylor, “No” she told him, “But i’m sure we’llfind a way when the time comes”.

Then a brilliantly bright lightcame round the bend. Awila stopped quite abruptly, Saffron, Rehn and Myloralmost crashed into her. “I think we’re at the end of this tunnel” shewhispered.
