Ranger RP

Ranger RP

The Kingdom of Araluen is a good one. King Duncan is wise and fair, and the people who live there are for the most part happy and prosperous. The kingdom has been saved by invasion many times by the brave but mysterious Ranger Corps, and they enjoy a reputation as one of the most successful nations in the known world.

The Rangers are a mystifying group of people. Many believe that they are capable of dark magic more powerful than the most learned sorcerer, but others know the truth - the Rangers are not magical. They do not possess the secret to teleportation, or know the key to invisibility. They cannot conjure things out of thin air, or summon spirits to haunt you. They are the intelligence force for the king. They go on missions, stop wars, protect the people, and do the sort of thing that ordinary folks can hardly dream of. Their dappled brown-green cloaks allow them to melt into the background at any given moment until you can hardly see them. A ranger is said to carry the lives of  dozen men in their quiver, for with their longbows they have never been seen to miss. All in all, they are not people you want to meddle with. Until you do.

In the Kingdom of Araluen, when you turn fifteen you are required to attend Choosing Day, where the Craftmasters of every profession come to pick who will be their next apprentices. Whoever you are chosen by, you go attend their "school" and learn how to do their craft. Knights go to Battleschool, Chefs go to the kitchens, Couriers train under Lady Pauline, and so on. If you are not chosen by anyone you can become a farmer and work in a small field, which is everyone's worst nightmare.

Finally it is Choosing Day, and you are extremely excited, until... you are not chosen. Bitter, utterly disappointed, and close to tears, you go home. The next day however, you find out why. The ranger of your fief has asked for you be be their apprentice. You can feel what you like about that - confused, scared, excited - but realize that however it’s going to turn out it’s better than your future as a farmer. You accept.

Fast forward to a few months into your training. It’s hard but you are enjoying it. Finally, you get to travel to your first Gathering. Once a year the Ranger Corps has a gathering where they all come together and discuss the status of the Kingdom. There, you meet up with a group of Rangers and Apprentices and are sent on your first mission, along with your mentor. A group of people dissatisfied after the previous war are slowly starting a rebellion. But this time it’s actually dangerous, the most powerful uprising in history. Your job is to investigate, and find a way to stop the rebellion. But it will not be easy. Traitors, spies, and backstabber lurk around every corner, and you have to trust your Ranger abilities to get to the bottom of it.

~~~
So, if you haven’t realized yet, I am making my first rp, which believe it or not I have never done before even though I’ve been here for more than a year. This is based off a book series that I have been reading called Ranger’s Apprentice, by John Flanagan, which I do not expect you to have read. Though this take place in medieval times, there has been a female ranger before, so we are not limited to only men. You can be a Ranger or a Ranger’s apprentice. There are 50 Rangers, one for each of the Kingdom’s fifty fiefs (like a mini kingdom ruled by a baron.) We will start once I decide that enough people have joined, and nobody can join after we have started unless nobody is posting anymore.
Who is/was your mentor?
Appearance (nothing fantasy, you’re just a normal person):
My Charrie:
Name: Warren Tallisin
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Ranger or apprentice? Ranger
Who is/was your mentor? Gilan, the only ranger trained with a sword
Appearance: Short-ish brown hair, clean shaven. Short and small, like most Rangers, and wears the ranger cloak that allows him to blend into the background, as well as soft leather boots and the Ranger double knife scabbard which holds a Saxe knife and a throwing knife. Wears the silver oakleaf that signifies him as a Ranger. His horses name is Burr.
Personality: Brisk and slightly impatient, but usually good humoured. Kind, but dangerous if you’re his enemy.
Backstory: Grew up with all older, bigger brothers who went off to become knights, and was initially disappointed not to be chosen for battleschool. Trained under the Ranger Gilan, the only Ranger who was trained with a sword, and realized that he liked it much better. Gilan helped him become a very good swordsman, and he is now one of the most promising of the young Rangers.
Miranda's horse is named Old Fatty Lumpkin. Goes by Lumpkin. Also, can I change her backstory? I want her to have been a thief in Farrel's fief. She was good a silent movement and staying hidden in plain sight because of this. She was not good enough for Farrel to not catch her. So he caught her but instead of turning her in he took her in as an appretice. Is this okay? She wouldn't have been through choosing day so I thought I should ask.
Yup, that's alright! Actually, it seems like a very ranger-like thing to do. The main character of the series, Will, is chosen because his mentor Halt (who is amazing by the way) sees that he has a natural curiosity and ability to blend into the shadows and stay hidden.
@Booksy Baker, that's alright! I'm glad you posted the picture, it explains really well what the Rngers look like.
@Jarvis, yup! Everyone gets a highly trained, very awesome Ranger horse. Usually an apprentice gets one only a couple of weeks into their training.
Name: Mira Klaus
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Ranger or Apprentice?: Apprentice
Who is/was your mentor: Hmmmm... I feel like I'm one of the only people here who hasn't read the series, so I need mentor help. Any suggestions?
Appearance: Feathery blond hair and piercing blue eyes. Even though he spends a lot of time outside, he never seems to tan or burn. Tall and thick; wears Ranger clothing (obviously). Usually has a vacant expression on his face.
Personality: Easy-going and patient; some people think he's a little bit 'off'. On the outside, he may not seem the brightest; but he has a perfect eye for detail comparable to Sherlock Holmes and a photographic memory. He has a strange habit of memorizing seemingly unimportant things, like the difference between species of tall grass, all the types of fabric and where they are imported from, and how to tell-at a glance-what burned when he looks at ashes. He is often lost taking in his surroundings. Surprisingly, these rare skills were the reason he was chosen to be a Ranger's apprentice: while he may not be the best at fighting; he is an excellent detective.
Backstory: His family (two parents, one brother and two sisters) owns a small farm in the Whitby fief (assuming, of course, that Whitby has fields. Again, I haven't read the books). They are slowly falling into debt, because Mira's oldest sister moved away and cut off all contact, and his oldest brother got married and also moved away. Before Mira left for Ranger training, he had a huge arguement with his father, who wanted him to stay and help keep the farm afloat. It was one of the only times Mira had ever really yelled at someone. Afterwards, he sadly left his family. He has yet to visit them.
Name: Johnathan Toll
Age: 16 also
Gender: Male
Ranger or Apprentice?: Apprentice
Who is/was your mentor: See Mira's sheet. NEED MENTOR HELP!
Appearance: Short, with brown hair and dark eyes. He has no freckles and sometimes looks younger than he actually is (he hates this). He is small and fast and wears his blades in a secret sleeve in his cloak.
Personality: Envious and prideful. He has very good fighting skills and is quite a good runner, and he loves to defeat his enemies in the most humiliating way possible. He wants to become a well-known and famous Ranger, but he is overshadowed by some of the others, including Mira. He loathes Mira. Mira may not be as good a fighter as Johnathan, but he has what Johnathan lacks: an eye for detail. His calm and tranquil manner infuriates Johnathan, who is prone to emotional outbursts. Johnathan holds grudges, is very hard on himself, and likes to work alone. He also somehow manages to get crushes on the most inconvienent people...
Backstory: Uhhh... I think I might develp it during the story. I haven't really thought of a suitable backstory for Johnathan yet.
************************************
@Kestrel~ Can Johnathan have a crush on Nesryn?
@The Riddler~ Is there a rule about mentors and apprentices- like do male Rangers have to teach male apprentices, and female Rangers have to teach female ones, or can it be either way? I'm asking because there is only one male Ranger charrie in this RP, and he's already taken.
submitted by Jarvis, age ???
(February 28, 2017 - 6:43 pm)
Of course! Just a warning, Nesryn might hate him a little bit at first because they seem to have different ideals on how they treat their enemies, but she may grow to like him back because of other parts of his personality, such as his pride. Nesryn tends to gravitate towards people that she can annoy easily, for some odd reason...
No, there's no rule about who can mentor who. Mentors and apprentices become very close over the time they work together, but it doesn't matter their gender.
Can my charrie like Alex? Do you want them to be dating, or just crush, er...? Whatever you prefer.
Name: Finnagan "Finn" Koto
Age: 229
Gender: M
Ranger or apprentice: Ranger
Who is/was your mentor?: Shin La, trained with a katana.
Appearance: Short dark black hair, pale skin, dark eyes, tall, and atheltic. He wears a wafuku (guy's kimono) when he isn't riding his horse or going out somewhere. Other times he will wear similar kimono clothing but without some of the over drapes. Instead he will wear a cloak that has a hood. He usually carries his katana.
Personality: Sharp and pretty funny. Unlike growing up in a household where you weren't supposed to speak, he enjoyed talking with his friends outside. So when Shin La finally started to trian him, he enjoyed the freedom that he had. Shin La, who is said to not ever smile and barely talk, would laugh with Finn. People like being around Finn because of this reason, and he can turn the most depressing situation around.
Backstory: He grew up in one of the strictest families around, but he wasn't ever cold hearted and liked to be around people. His best weapon is his katana, and he has become known to other Rangers for his skills with it. He has a black overo stallion named Shima.
