Ranger RP

Ranger RP

The Kingdom of Araluen is a good one. King Duncan is wise and fair, and the people who live there are for the most part happy and prosperous. The kingdom has been saved by invasion many times by the brave but mysterious Ranger Corps, and they enjoy a reputation as one of the most successful nations in the known world.

The Rangers are a mystifying group of people. Many believe that they are capable of dark magic more powerful than the most learned sorcerer, but others know the truth - the Rangers are not magical. They do not possess the secret to teleportation, or know the key to invisibility. They cannot conjure things out of thin air, or summon spirits to haunt you. They are the intelligence force for the king. They go on missions, stop wars, protect the people, and do the sort of thing that ordinary folks can hardly dream of. Their dappled brown-green cloaks allow them to melt into the background at any given moment until you can hardly see them. A ranger is said to carry the lives of  dozen men in their quiver, for with their longbows they have never been seen to miss. All in all, they are not people you want to meddle with. Until you do.

In the Kingdom of Araluen, when you turn fifteen you are required to attend Choosing Day, where the Craftmasters of every profession come to pick who will be their next apprentices. Whoever you are chosen by, you go attend their "school" and learn how to do their craft. Knights go to Battleschool, Chefs go to the kitchens, Couriers train under Lady Pauline, and so on. If you are not chosen by anyone you can become a farmer and work in a small field, which is everyone's worst nightmare.

Finally it is Choosing Day, and you are extremely excited, until... you are not chosen. Bitter, utterly disappointed, and close to tears, you go home. The next day however, you find out why. The ranger of your fief has asked for you be be their apprentice. You can feel what you like about that - confused, scared, excited - but realize that however it’s going to turn out it’s better than your future as a farmer. You accept.

Fast forward to a few months into your training. It’s hard but you are enjoying it. Finally, you get to travel to your first Gathering. Once a year the Ranger Corps has a gathering where they all come together and discuss the status of the Kingdom. There, you meet up with a group of Rangers and Apprentices and are sent on your first mission, along with your mentor. A group of people dissatisfied after the previous war are slowly starting a rebellion. But this time it’s actually dangerous, the most powerful uprising in history. Your job is to investigate, and find a way to stop the rebellion. But it will not be easy. Traitors, spies, and backstabber lurk around every corner, and you have to trust your Ranger abilities to get to the bottom of it.

~~~
So, if you haven’t realized yet, I am making my first rp, which believe it or not I have never done before even though I’ve been here for more than a year. This is based off a book series that I have been reading called Ranger’s Apprentice, by John Flanagan, which I do not expect you to have read. Though this take place in medieval times, there has been a female ranger before, so we are not limited to only men. You can be a Ranger or a Ranger’s apprentice. There are 50 Rangers, one for each of the Kingdom’s fifty fiefs (like a mini kingdom ruled by a baron.) We will start once I decide that enough people have joined, and nobody can join after we have started unless nobody is posting anymore.
~~~

My Charrie:

Name: Warren Tallisin

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Ranger or apprentice? Ranger

Who is/was your mentor? Gilan, the only ranger trained with a sword

Appearance: Short-ish brown hair, clean shaven. Short and small, like most Rangers, and wears the ranger cloak that allows him to blend into the background, as well as soft leather boots and the Ranger double knife scabbard which holds a Saxe knife and a throwing knife. Wears the silver oakleaf that signifies him as a Ranger. His horses name is Burr.

Personality: Brisk and slightly impatient, but usually good humoured. Kind, but dangerous if you’re his enemy.

Backstory: Grew up with all older, bigger brothers who went off to become knights, and was initially disappointed not to be chosen for battleschool. Trained under the Ranger Gilan, the only Ranger who was trained with a sword, and realized that he liked it much better. Gilan helped him become a very good swordsman, and he is now one of the most promising of the young Rangers.

Name: Lee Nightingale

Age: 40

Gender: Male

Ranger or apprentice? Ranger

Who is/was your mentor? A man named Bernard

Appearance: Slightly taller than most Rangers, by which I mean average height. Has black hair that is just starting to go grey, dark eyes, and small beard.

Personality: A senior Ranger, so experienced and wise. Clever, and has a wry sense of humour and sarcasm. He is kind and sympathetic, but that doesn't mean he will go easy on you.

Backstory: He grew up impoverished but was saved by being chosen to train as a Ranger. His family is now in the middle class, and his parents can finally work for a steady income. He's been a Ranger for a long time, and has seen very much.

~~~
Name: Laura Alvarado
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Ranger or apprentice? Ranger
Who is/was your mentor?
Appearance: A curly poof of bright red hair which she constantly has to keep her hood over if she needs to blend into the background. Not terribly skinny, but not overweight either.
Personality: Still relatively young, bright and chatty. Has a very focused intensity, but like all fully fledged Rangers she has learned patience. You don’t want to get on her bad side - she can be very scary if she so chooses to.
Backstory: Pretty normal. Grew up in the middle class, and wanted to become a Ranger, although she thought that she would never be able to because she was a girl, so she decided to focus on becoming a Courier. However, things changed, and finally female Rangers joined the Corps, and she was overjoyed to be chosen.
~~~

We will start tomorrow. Both Lee and Laura are open for apprentices. Spots are closed to anyone, except for mentor spots. I don't know who still needs a mentor.

I'm really sorry. I have to postpone starting until tomorrow. I haven't been home since 11 and now it's past ten at night, and I'm really tired. I didn't know I would be away for so long, but I will post tomorrow morning as soon as I can. Have a wonderful night. I promise you I shall not let my first rp die.

Warren~

For all but the Craftmasters and the fifteen year olds of the fief, Choosing day was the same as every other day. It was hot and humid, and for the most part business was going well, which meant that many people took a day off and remained indoors to escape the sweltering sun. Crops drooped, the trees stayed silent, and the cows munched grass with even less enthusiasm than they usually did.

Except for in the castle. As Warren rode up to the gates in his cloak that identified him as a Ranger, he could hear the whisperings of the nervous fifteen year olds waiting for their future to be decided. He was late, but that did not bother him one bit. Rangers had to retain their air of mystery if they ever wanted to get anything done, and being late would help serve that cause.

The Ranger swiftly dismounted and led Burr to the stables where he unsaddled her and gave her an apple. “Be back in a bit,” he told her. She snorted and tossed her mane, as if to reply, “well don’t forget to bring more apples!”

Warren shook his head as he walked off, wondering if other Rangers felt like their horses could understand everything they said. Probably not, he thought, and entered the castle.

A girl with long brown hair had just cheerfully been chosen to attend cooking school. A tall, athletic looking boy was grinning smugly next to the Battlemaster and knight, Sir Philip. A few other kids stood around the room as well, with varying degrees of happiness on their face. Which left one girl still in the middle, waiting to be chosen. Warren skirted the edge of the room and whispered something to Baron Anthony, handing him a slip of paper. He nodded. “Celestia will not be chosen. I will speak with her tomorrow about what her future may hold.” The girl, shocked, stepped out from the middle of the room as the Craftmasters and other apprentices dispersed. Her eyes were still drawn to the mysterious slip of paper that would determine her life.

I'll post a map of Araluen  later. As of now...

~Nalia

I've been bringing Lock farther and farther away from our fief of Keramon. Really, it's not a bad fief to live in and protect.

But my memories chase me and I must run.

An ear-splitting scream fills my ears as I urge Lock, my caramel colored horse, farther through the woods.

It's not even a real scream.

It's my memories, filling my ears. Smoke. A password yelled. A promise. A knife thrown down as I ran. Gone. Anger. Fear. How could they do this--

Lock whinnies sharply. He knows when I fall into my memories, I could use a rope tossed into the pit, figuratively speaking.

Suddenly, a branch breaks, not underhoof, and I look around wildly.

I don't see a single thing, but I dismount and grab my bow from my back, fitting an arrow to it. What on earth..?

Something crunches underfoot.

I look down.

A clumsy homemade arrow is in two under my foot. I examine it, and it seems to be topped with Turkey feathers, clumsily tied to the shaft with cheap twine.

I pull my cloak tighter around me and try not to sink into my memories of my old....quit it.

I glance around, looking for other--

There.

On a tree is a clumsily painted target, and an obviously bad archer has been using it.

A woodcutting axe lies embedded in a bale of hay, and a badly forged sword lies on the ground. Underneath it is a medal of some sort.

I stoop down deeper into the forest's shadows and adjust the sword, then lift the glittering silver medal to my eye.

It's a courier's silver laurel pin. Snapped in half.

My mind races and my memories are pulling me into one of my strangest memories.

Choosing day.

~~~
Every other fifteen year old is seated on the wooden bench, chattering endlessly. I chatter along with them--I actually talked without reason, talked just to talk back then. Not anymore.
Then there's an appearance.
The door slides open and our Baron walks out. I don't remember anything about him, other than his high, reedy voice.
Names are called. Friends leave and become chosen.
Then I hear my name.
I stand up. It's all a blur and all I remember blurting was "Courier. I'd like to become a--" Then the voice cuts in. "No." "Then..." I list schools. No, no, no. Without even considering it. I finally ask for battleschool, to the other's laughter. It's all refused.
I just sat on the bench, cradling my head in my hands. Time blurs by and I lose track, numb thoughts of "I can't" in my head.
Then I'm aware of someone standing in front of me. Someone in a mottled cloak. A Ranger's cloak.
~~~

I'm jerked out of my memories as I hear voices approaching.

Finn~

I ride in on Shima, and I arrive early. I'm known for that, always being early.

I walk through the countless halls where teens are waiting for their fates to be picked. I remember when I was in that room, hoping to be a knight or if anything, a blacksmith. But I got something better.

My fast paced feet walk briskly through the halls until I get to the room where the Rangers are supposed to meet before they go out.

I scan the room. Some people have just arrived, and others are seated.

Suddenly a voice comes from behind me.

"So who's going to be late?"

I turn and realise it's Alex.

I stand up straighter. "Honestly, Warren. But he's unpredictable, so you never know."

She snickers and rolls her eyes, going to sit down. I do the same, until a man comes into the room and nods his head. It's time to go around and choose.

I see Warren come up to the gate on his horse, Burr, and I walk through the stone hallways, heading for the room where the people are.

I scan it, and nobody interests me. They all look chosen for another job. But then I see a girl, an older teenager, maybe about 16 or 17. She sits in the middle of the room with her arms crossed, and almost a glare on her face.

Ooh, fun. I'll train a person with anger issues.

I walk up to the guy handing out the jobs like candy and slip him the piece of parchment paper.

Then I swiftly walk out to see how long it'll take for my new apprentice to get it.

Celestia~

Today has to be the worst day to be chosen. I won't be chosen, I already know that, but can't they at least pretend to give me a job?

One by one the people in my room get picked, and I'm left sitting there until a guy comes in and hands the man who gives us our jobs a slip of paper. What does it say?

Suddenly the man is beside me and gruffly hands me the paper. I cautiously take it and he spins away, to assign more jobs.

I carefully unfold the paper and read what it says:

See me in the Ranger Aisle.

Could this mean....

Well that was unexpected.

 Riddler, since Eric is in his final year, could he graduate at the Gathering we're going to?

 Eric~

 Eric nodded in satisfaction as his arrow struck the rabbit, killing it instantly.  He began to move toward it,  almost unconciously using his mottled cloak to camouflage into the trees.  He reached the rabbit, and picked it up, then whistled for Spark.  His horse immediately trotted toward him out of the group of the trees where he had been standing quiet and still for the last ten minutes. He slid onto Spark's back, and began the short ride back to the cabin.
 When he reached the cabin, he put away Spark and quickly skinned the rabbit before entering the cabin.  Leander, his mentor, was up and bending over the fire, where bacon and eggs were sizzling.  He barely glanced at Eric as  he entered, other than to say, "So you did finally wake up." Eric raised an eyebrow, "I don't believe you were awake when I left."  His mentor turned and regarded him steadily, "Did you check?"
Eric was unable to find a reply, and Leander snorted, then handed him a plate of bacon and eggs.  Taking it, he stopped to get a cup of coffee before heading out to the porch.  Before long, his mentor joined him, and they sat in companionable silence.
