I sighed and snapped my briefcase shut. The london fog greeted me as I stepped out the door. I waved over a carriage and rode to my friend's business.

Emma's travel agency, the sign read.

The bell ringed as I stepped inside.

"Hello, there," said Emma. "What new bird are you looking for?"

"A phoenix."

"Ha ha! Good luck with that!"

"Not just any phoenix. A dead phoenix."

Emma stared at me. "You can't get feathers from ash, Thomas."

"You can give feathers to ash."

"What on earth are you talking about?"

I took the small metal box wrapped in padding from my briefcase and opened it to show her.

The phoenix feather.

Emma gasped. Phoenix feathers are usually rumpled, but this one was perfect. Emma already knew this from me, of course. She could have collected feathers for the museum if she wanted to, but she left the bird-hunting to me. However, her greatest wish was to see the day when humans could fly.

"How'd you get such a perfect one? And why's the box padded?"

"To protect my hands," I said grimly, and right on cue the feather shot out of the box and flew around the room, throwing sparks everywhere.

"What?!" Emma screamed. The feather flew out the open window and onto the street.

"After it!" I cried, and Emma and I ran into the road.

The ash stirred. I stared at it, wondering what to do. There was no wind.

Aylete.

I sprang back. Ingit's voice. The ash moved faintly as the deceased phoenix's voice sounded again.

Aylete I need your help.

"Ignit?" I whispered.

Yes, Aylete. I need your help. Do you know why I died?

"You couldn't get to the Fires fast enough."

Unfortunately. The only way to revive me is for one of my feathers to be buried in my ash.

"Obviously."

Oh stop being - Oh. you did know that. Anyway. One of my feathers was discovered by an explorer long ago. I need you to find him and guide him.

"Some simple job."

If you don't I will fade from existence, and so will the explorer. Therefore, I name you Emblem, for your actions will herald the life of a phoenix."

"That is very dramatic, Ingit, but my name is Emblem." I gasped. "My name is... Emblem." No matter how hard I tried, I could not say 'Aylete'.

See? It is your true name. You cannot escape it. Your name is Emblem, as it was meant to be.

~~

And so it begins.

XD No, that was me not attempting to make sense. I was kind of feeling out the idea of feathers blowing around to form shapes that mean something or other about the phoenix one.

OH. OKAY. THAT makes sense. :) Thanks for the translation, Viola? !

I stalk throught the forest, sniffing the air. The explorer has not entered the forest yet. I think of my new name and why I got it.

Stupid phoenix. Why do I have to be the one to bring him back?

I watch a gryfawn scamper by.

Why didn't he choose a gryfawn? They're the purest creatures in the universe... Oh. DANG IT IGNIT!!

So, this is a dirtier job than it seems...

~

*Snickers evilly* Gryfawns are adorable. I'm pretty sure I made them up... They have a normal gryphon's HEAD but the rest of them is like a deer's fawn's body. With butterfly wings. And minute horns, no matter the gender. They're the greatest.

"I want that feather."

"You do realize it's a feather."

"It's perfect. Now, you don't get paid if you don't find that feather. I don't care if someone owns it or not, or if anyone needs it. Just take it... Now, thief. Go fetch."
