Ann and Mary

Ann and Mary Liz's Story!

Okay, Mary Liz, I think we should do fantasy. I had a good one about a girl trying to learn to ride dragons, griffins and phoenixes in this thing called Flightschool. To pass from 5th to 6th, they have to have their own Flightbeast, which they get from a place called the Firepool. It is a giant volcanic pool filled with Flightbeast eggs. The eggs chooose you, and no egg has chosen the girl yet, so she should be in 7th grade, but is still in 5th. On the trip that they take to the Firepool, she runs off into the woods because a girl is teasing her, and she finds a very small, ice-cold pool. In the pool is a single jet-black egg. She takes it in her bag and when it hatches she finds out that it is a dark magic little black griffin. Dark magic Flightbeasts are supposed to be excecuted, but it is actually very nice so she decides to run away so that they don't kill it.

I hope you like the  idea. Bye!

((I'm sorry! Feel free to throw virtual fruit at me. I'm horrid at responding in a timely fashion.))

//Shay//

Shay seethed.

She knew she should be happy for Lucille. There was a part in Shay that felt guilty she wasn't. It seemed that Lucille awakened in everyone an urge to adore everything about Lucille, and feel horrible upset with themselves when they didn't--- as though it was cruel of them not to worship this girl whom everyone else seemed to love so much. This girl who was so kind and did so much for others.

And then there was the part of Shay who knew that Lucille was really a weak, tacky, acting wannabe who put on airs and graces and hid her true self behind pounds of makeup.

Shay just wanted to be good at something, just once. But Lucille always beat her to it. And if not Lucille, someone else.

It was almost enough to make her believe Ophelia Dove when she started teasing Shay.

Lucille had just emerged from the pond, grinning and hugging a beautiful bronze egg to her chest. Everyone rushed over to her, that is, everyone except for Shay... And Ophelia. "Well, Shay, it looks like this just won't be your year.", said Ophelia with a horrible smile."It looks like Lety and Marsha are next!" Sure enough, the two girls had the same puzzled look on their faces that Lucille had had. "When will you get chosen, Shay?" Ophelia would not leave her alone. "Will you just stay until you're as old as Ms. Cole, and then say 'Oops! I must have made a mistake!'?" "What will you do then, Shay, when Flightschool can't keep you anymore? Run back to your rich parents?" Shay gasped. She felt a flush coming to her face, her fingers curling into fists. "I will NOT go back there! I WILL become a Flight Rider!", she yelled. Ophelia took the chance that Shay's anger gave her. "Oh yeah? I bet you can't wait to get back to wearing dresses and having a dinner that costs 400 gold every night!" Shay knew that she had lost. She had felt this way in every fight that she had gotten into outside the training arena. She stopped trying to control herself and let go. Shay's arm curved up in a perfect semicircle. It came down, right on Ophelia's wrist. Ophelia screamed in rage, even though Shay had not hit very hard. Ms. Cole came rushing over from where she was helping Lucille keep the egg warm in her backback, her eyes  narrowed and her lips pressed into a thin line. "Girls!" She screeched. Shay ran into the dense pine forest behind them.

((Whew! Just asking, have you ever had a moment where you feel like you're just watching something happen in your head, and when you look up, you've written an entire block of writing?))

*Nudges* I wrote more than I ever have before! (On this story, I mean)

((I dunno... Probably sometimes. Generally I have moments where I write really hard and try not to look at/think about it, though, so that I don't realize how bad it is and delete it all. :P))

//Shay//

Mrs. Cole soon fell behind, but Shay kept Ophelia's bouncing black curls in her view. Every now and then her peer would turn around and shout something spiteful, to fuel the fire that kept Shay's feet pounding against the forest floor.

A tree root sprawled across the ground. Shay saw it, but her instincts kicked in too late for her to jump over it.

She tripped, and it sent her flying a few feet ahead before she thumped painfully onto the ground, her ankle twisted at a scary angle and her ribs throbbing. She'd had her tongue clenched between her teeth, unconsciously, and now she tasted blood as the force of the fall made her bite down.

Shay exhaled unsteadily. Ophelia was right, Shay thought through the pain. She probably was better suited to returning to the comforts of life in Fairmonte. She clearly had no talents in this place.

((Ooohh, nice name. Fairmonte!))

Ow, Shay thought as she felt her ribs. She couldn't feel any broken bones, but she knew that she would have a lovely bruise the next morning. Her ankle was sprained, though, and it felt like it was being covered in ice. Ice? Shay looked behind her. Her foot was resting in a circular pool of water, maybe a meter across. It was freezing cold, but no ice had formed on the surface. Only on her foot. Shay pulled her leg out, dragging the painful foot on the ground. She crawled to the edge of the pool and looked in. It was very deep, almost like a well. Shay looked closer. There was a black stone at the bottom. A stone? No. An egg. Shay was confused at first, but soon she smiled and became calm. The egg was speaking to her. It was not using words, but that was okay, because she could understand it anyway. Dive. Come on, dive! You won't freeze. No, you aren't going crazy. And I'm not trying to trick you, either! Do you think I like it down here? Shay was drawn towards the egg, some sort of force was pulling her to it. She was crawling to the edge, putting her hands into the water, diving in. The water was warm, strangely enough. Light was shining into the bottom, light that was giving her strength, allowing her to breathe in the warm, wonderful water. She went downward even farther, pulling herself through the water. She reached the bottom, curled up around the egg. The floor was made of silt. It felt like velvet against her skin. She would have liked to stay down, to sleep on the velvet and breathe the light forever, but she knew she couldn't. She needed to take the egg out with her. Her fingers curled around the bottom. She became colder, less happy, as she swam out of the pool.

((Thank you. :) And plaudits to you for good writing.))

//Shay//

Shay coughed, half to clear her throat of any water and half to get the egg's attention. Or... something like that. "Hello?" she asked, feeling foolish.

She didn't sense words, exactly, but a warmth spread through her, from the egg, almost like a salutation. Or an acknowledgment, at least.

"What is going on?" whispered Shay.

The egg trembled.

Like a shrug, sort of.

((Oops, sorry for taking so long. And I probably won't be able to post all of next week, as I am going on vacation.))

Shay's knapsack was lying on the ground next to the pool. She bit her lip, thinking, and started to form a plan. Shay set to work collecting mosses, dry leaves, and bits of tree bark. Anything that would serve as insulation for the egg. She stuffed it into her sack, excavating a small cave for the egg to settle in. As she picked it up, she felt the same surge of happiness as she had at the bottom of the pond. She slid her fingers across the smooth, black surface and her fingers literally tingled with joy. ((Sorry for being so short.))

//Shay//

What to do now? Shay wondered.

She could go back to the rest of the girls. It would be wisest to ask Mrs. Cole about the strange egg. It could be dangerous, couldn't it?

But something told Shay that this egg couldn't be bad. It was too... too good, somehow. Nothing that gave such a feeling of bliss could be so bad.

They'd only laugh at her if she went back. Everyone else probably had their own eggs by this point. Her egg would seem different.

Then the egg began to tremble.

((I'm tired... Is that okay? Sorry this is short too.))
