The dice clattered

The dice clattered on the table, Felix looking down at them lazily. The tavern around him was full of cheery laughter and talk, the lamps dim. It was midnight, and instead of sleeping, Felix was here, trying to make some extra cash.

"Doubles again, I guessed right!" Felix exclaimed, "Hand over the money!"

His opponent, a serious-looking young woman rolled her eyes and slid a pile of gold coins over. Felix grinned with satisfaction as he swept the gold coins into his purse with a pleasant clinking. "Pleasure!" he said, giving a small bow to the woman, before skipping out into the night.

Felix whistled to himself as he strolled through the streets of Paralia. The air was mild and warm, and Felix was perfectly happy to stay here and make some extra money while he figured out how to travel without getting shot by the Resistance or Catastrophe's army.

The quaint storefronts were mostly closed, with wooden boards covering the windows for the night. It wasn't quite safe anywhere anymore, but Felix could live with that, it was fine.

Felix turned a corner, and almost tripped over a tent stake.

Jumping up, Felix looked around curiously. A lime green tent was tacked to the ground, that had definitely not been there the day before. He looked up at the sign. It read 'Millie's Fortune Telling' in garishly painted rainbow letters.

Ooh! Fortune telling! Wonder how much it costs?

With not an ounce of hesitation, Felix ducked inside the tent.

Inside, it was dark, and Felix caught the strong scent of peppermint. Peculiar photos with bullet holes shot through them, and playing cards, and strange things hung from the velvet walls of the tent. A hooded figure sat at a lime green table, on which stood a single foggy crystal ball.

"Hey! What's that?" Felix greeted, pointing curiously at a certain photo, which seemed to be of a white flower, that looked unexplainably wrong.

"Nothing," the hooded figure said, "Why are you here?"

Felix shrugged. "You're a fortune teller, right?"

"Duh."

"Alright, can you tell me my fortune?!"

"It costs two coins."

Felix drew two coins from his purse, and flicked them at the fortune teller. He could've sworn that they rolled their eyes, if he could've seen their eyes.

"Alright," they said, leaning forward and placing their hands on the crystal ball, "look into the crystal ball and tell me what you see."

Felix stared into the white crystal ball. A speeding horse broke through the fog, dashing through the crystal ball, until suddenly, it keeled over, and was replaced with a white flower, sprouting from its body. The white flower swirled through the mist, growing larger and larger and larger, but then–a sudden gunshot rang out, and the crystal ball went blank.

"I saw a horse! And a white flower! And then I heard a gunshot! What does the gunshot mean?"

"The horse means you'll be traveling a lot. The white flower means regret. And the gunshot ..."

The hooded figure jumped up, and poked their head outside the tent. "The gunshot means it's time to leave."

With a swirl of green mist, Felix stumbled back, outside the tent, and watched as it folded itself up, into a tiny velvet package, and darted down an alleyway.

Felix got up, a little disorented, and looked around. People were running, and the clang of metal and sounds of fighting drifted towards him. Something had happened.

Definitely time to leave, Felix thought, pocketing the picture of the white flower he had stolen from the tent, and slipping down a side street. Paralia had fallen to fighting. It was time to do some traveling.

Dude, I have no idea where I'm going to take this, oh whale :p

It had been so long. So long since I'd seen the light of day through something other than a window. Since I'd encountered people who were not Machali or nurses or doctors. I had forgotten what it felt like.

Even now, I could barely remember.

Several months ago, Machali and I had escaped from Ron's circus, along with Whisper and Moonlight. But on the way out, one of Ron's bodyguards had cornered me, and attacked. Everyone else was too far away to do anything. Machali realized I had gone missing and went back for me.

When he found me, I didn't know who he was and panicked.

The bodyguard had landed a hard enough blow to the side of my head that I lost some of my memories. Especially the ones from the past year, the ones of meeting Moonlight, Machali, and Whisper. I could just barely remember my past, too. I remember screaming when I discovered I had a cybornetic right arm. I thought I'd lost it in the fight with the guard, but Machali told me I'd said I'd been born without it.

When the others learned of my amnesia, they too were distraught and bewildered. "How could she forget all that?" I remember Whisper saying.

Machali said Moonlight and Whisper should get as far as possible from Ron. That we'd find them later. Then he helped me find a hospital.

Along the way, he told me how I met him. He said I'd been a prisoner at Jokull.

I didn't know what Jokull was.

He told me it was a fortress, currently under Catastrophe's control. I didn't know who Catastrophe was, either.

And then he told me that we were in love.

But I didn't love him anymore.

I think that broke his heart.

But still he comforted me and told me it was okay, and he paid for all of my hopsital expenses and visited me every day. The doctors were able to use some kind of light magic to restore most my memories.

And I did remember some of Machali. I remember his kindness and charisma.

But I didn't remember the love I had once felt for him.

I couldn't stand to see the hurt on his face so, that night, I snuck out of the hospital. My wounds weren't fully healed, and most of my memories were still gone, but I was patched up enough to survive. And so I kept on running, away from the misery I had caused.

Finally, I'd reached Paralia, a city I heard some of the nurses talking about. They said it was beautiful.

But right now, it was a battle field.

I stalked through the undergrowth, keeping my head low. It was a full moon tonight - a good time to travel for me, as the patches of silver light that shone through the tall grass camouflaged my white spots. I was on the outskirts of Paralia. Maybe this will be the place. Where I finally find home. Maybe... I kept going, towards a shadowy alley. It looked like a good place to watch, and wait. For what? I didn't know. But I'd know it when I saw it. A wall around the city was no challenge to my jumping skills. Soon I reached the alley. There was a stack of big crates, and bits and pieces of junk scattered around. Jumping to the top of the pile, I climbed onto the roof of a nearby shop. Come daytime, I'd have to find somewhere more hidden to rest, but this would do for now. I settled on the edge to watch. And wait.

~~~
So I'm new here and not entirely sure where to go... I put this character (Silverwhisker, a lynx with one claw of pure silver) on the Who's Here thread, too.
Goldenfeather~
I creep into Paralia. Night has officially fallen. I hear metal clanging, gunshots. I hiss angrily. Humans. So ignorant sometimes.
Well, it's time to get my rest. I dart into an alleyway and cover myself with some dust and cobwebs, then lie there, closed eyes, resting.
Until a rough hand touches me.
I roar and leap up, snarling. My emerald eyes gleam with anger.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!" I growl, anger clearly in my voice.
The person jumps back.
The next evening, I shake the dust off my fur and stalk out of the crate I'd been resting in. As I leap to the roofs, I hear what might be... a growl? Roar? Gunshot? It's too far away to be sure, but I head towards the sound anyway. The growl stops, but there are still voices. Soon I reach the alley that they're coming from. Cautiously, I peer down over the edge. I stifle a gasp. There's a huge golden creature glaring into the shadows. There's something moving there, but I focus on the dragon again. I've never seen one before now. It has feathers. Aren't dragons supposed to have scales? I could have stared at it all day, but it glances up. Heart pounding, I leap back. Did it see me? I back away, not sure what to do. I could run. It's what I've been doing all my life. But... I have a good feeling about this. Wait, what? I don't act on 'good feelings'. I survive. Still... I sigh and slink into the shadows. But on the same roof. What am I thinking? I don't know anything about this dragon. And what about the shadow person, whoever that is? But I stay.
~~~

(This is still Silverwhisker, and I am the one who created her, but decided I'd rather go by my CB name.) Also, Goldenfeather - is this okay? Maybe you didn't see me after all. But I'd love it if they could meet!

Sure, I'd love for her to meet! I'm Night/Spirit, by the way. Sorry this is super late!

Goldenfeather~

I whip around. I could have sworn I saw silver fur. The person uses this chance to lunge at my jewel, but I roar, a loud, earth-shaking roar, and zoom up towards the sky, flitting near the moon's glow. It is then I see some bright white spots.

Suspicious. I form into a streamline and dive down, to the lynx. I sense that she won't hurt me.

"Hi. I'm Goldenfeather. To clear your suspicions about me having feathers, I'm a phoenix-dragon hybrid, so I have feathers. And no, I can't mindread. I just have a very good sense of...whatever it is you call it." I say, bowing slightly to the lynx.

"I'm Silverwhisker." she says.

I dip my head. I still can't stop staring at the dragon - no, Goldenfeather. "Nice to meet you. Why are you here? I haven't been here very long myself, but Paralia doesn't seem like a very nice place right now. I've... been traveling," I say.

Goldenfeather~

"Oh, I've been traveling as well...I've been seeking a peaceful place. I though Paralia would be better than some of the other places, but I suppose not. No, it HAD to be WAR and PEOPLE TOUCHING ME and ME SEEKING REFUGE and PEOPLE STEALING MY STUFF!!!" I say angrily. "But it's not your fault, of course."

I nod. "Humans. What makes them think they can mess the world up for everyone?" I say in disgust. Then I take a deep breath. "Would you like to travel together?" I can't believe I just said that! What am I thinking?  "I don't know where I'm going next, but..." Trailing off, I looked at Goldenfeather questioningly.

Goldenfeather~

"I agree. They think they rule the world. And sure, I'd love to. Just keep in mind I will be VERY ALERT and DO NOT TRY ANY TRICKS ON ME."

I bow slightly, showing respect, and showing that I didn't mean to be super rude.

I blink, just a little surprised that she agreed. Then I nod. "Same. So... where should we go? I'm assuming you don't really have a home either. And we probably don't want to stick around here too much longer," I say as shots ring across the night.

I look around, and spot the uniform of a soldier.

"Talk later! We gotta get outta here as fast as I can go! Hop on, I think I can maneuver some tricks. Hold on tight, though!"

Silverwhisker obliges and I lift open my wings, letting the current catch them. Soon enough we are floating above the sky.

"Yes, I think we really need to get outta here~ Is that a human~ Oh my~ ACK~ what?~ Sorry, there was just a person who walked in a tent and then two people came out and then the tent shrunk and then~ AAAAAAAAAH IS THAT BLOOD? EW? HUMAN~ UGH SOMEBODY, I THINK TWO SOMEBODIES, ACTUALLY, GOT KILLED. And now there's another being trying to fix them? ANYWAYS LETS GET OUT OF HERE! ITS WAYYYY TO WAR-Y!" I howl, confused at what humans do.

I gaze down at the moonlit city. Even with blasts and shouts echoing across it, it doesn't mar the pleasure of flying for me. "Let's go to the edge of the city, near the woods. It should be quieter there," I say, and Goldenfeather nods. She banks and swoops to the west. I relish the wind swooshing through my fur.

After just a few minutes, we land under the cover of the trees. I sigh in relief. "Okay. This should be a safe place to stop for a while. Why are humans so weird, anyway? Way too obsessed with power." I keep muttering to myself as I try to remember the map of this area. Goldenfeather paces, probably thinking too.

~~~
The Varie Badlands are to the north of Paralia - has anyone explored there? It might be an interesting place for Goldenfeather and Silverwhisker to go. Or they could go west, to Sprocketville and the Labyrinth Lands. Or they could stay near Paralia for a while; meet the 'weird humans trying to fix the other humans'...
