The dice clattered

The dice clattered on the table, Felix looking down at them lazily. The tavern around him was full of cheery laughter and talk, the lamps dim. It was midnight, and instead of sleeping, Felix was here, trying to make some extra cash.

"Doubles again, I guessed right!" Felix exclaimed, "Hand over the money!"

His opponent, a serious-looking young woman rolled her eyes and slid a pile of gold coins over. Felix grinned with satisfaction as he swept the gold coins into his purse with a pleasant clinking. "Pleasure!" he said, giving a small bow to the woman, before skipping out into the night.

Felix whistled to himself as he strolled through the streets of Paralia. The air was mild and warm, and Felix was perfectly happy to stay here and make some extra money while he figured out how to travel without getting shot by the Resistance or Catastrophe's army.

The quaint storefronts were mostly closed, with wooden boards covering the windows for the night. It wasn't quite safe anywhere anymore, but Felix could live with that, it was fine.

Felix turned a corner, and almost tripped over a tent stake.

Jumping up, Felix looked around curiously. A lime green tent was tacked to the ground, that had definitely not been there the day before. He looked up at the sign. It read 'Millie's Fortune Telling' in garishly painted rainbow letters.

Ooh! Fortune telling! Wonder how much it costs?

With not an ounce of hesitation, Felix ducked inside the tent.

Inside, it was dark, and Felix caught the strong scent of peppermint. Peculiar photos with bullet holes shot through them, and playing cards, and strange things hung from the velvet walls of the tent. A hooded figure sat at a lime green table, on which stood a single foggy crystal ball.

"Hey! What's that?" Felix greeted, pointing curiously at a certain photo, which seemed to be of a white flower, that looked unexplainably wrong.

"Nothing," the hooded figure said, "Why are you here?"

Felix shrugged. "You're a fortune teller, right?"

"Duh."

"Alright, can you tell me my fortune?!"

"It costs two coins."

Felix drew two coins from his purse, and flicked them at the fortune teller. He could've sworn that they rolled their eyes, if he could've seen their eyes.

"Alright," they said, leaning forward and placing their hands on the crystal ball, "look into the crystal ball and tell me what you see."

Felix stared into the white crystal ball. A speeding horse broke through the fog, dashing through the crystal ball, until suddenly, it keeled over, and was replaced with a white flower, sprouting from its body. The white flower swirled through the mist, growing larger and larger and larger, but then–a sudden gunshot rang out, and the crystal ball went blank.

"I saw a horse! And a white flower! And then I heard a gunshot! What does the gunshot mean?"

"The horse means you'll be traveling a lot. The white flower means regret. And the gunshot ..."

The hooded figure jumped up, and poked their head outside the tent. "The gunshot means it's time to leave."

With a swirl of green mist, Felix stumbled back, outside the tent, and watched as it folded itself up, into a tiny velvet package, and darted down an alleyway.

Felix got up, a little disorented, and looked around. People were running, and the clang of metal and sounds of fighting drifted towards him. Something had happened.

Definitely time to leave, Felix thought, pocketing the picture of the white flower he had stolen from the tent, and slipping down a side street. Paralia had fallen to fighting. It was time to do some traveling.

I think the Labyrinth Lands could be interesting!

Goldenfeather~

I think. Ugh. It's been so long. I remember my pouches and sit down on my haunches for a bit, sorting the pouches, until I finally find a dark, midnight blue one.

"I found the map! Anyways, it's kinda old, it might not work. It was before...the war...."

I recount Ghost, who was lost in the war. She was a shapeshifter. Oh, my goodness, it's been so long...

I shake my head clear of the thoughts.

"Oh, look, the Labyrinth Lands! I've been meaning to explore those for awhile. D'ya want to go there, or shall we go to the Varie Badlands?"

-

Let's just pretend Ghost, my neglected character, has died in the war. WHELP on to the other stuff!

My back was pressed against the wooden crate, footsteps running by in the street adjacent to the alley I was in. Gunfire and explosions rang out across the night sky, and I pressed my knees closer to my chest. I had vague memories of being in battles like this before, but I didn't remember how I'd survived.

Hopefully, those memories would come back soon.

Before I'd fled the hospital, Machali had explained to me where all the different organisations were stationed. If I remembered correctly, Paralia had been a Resistance-occupied city. I wonder why Catastrophe had decided to attack it--maybe because it was so close to Mer? That was where the Resistance's main base was.

Guns fired just on the other side of my hiding spot and I covered my ears. There was the sound of something hitting the ground, and then a group moving away. Taking in a deep breath, I crawled out of my spot, my skirt dragging through the muddy puddles covering the street.

There were two bodies on the ground--one was unmoving, and a Catastrophe soldier. Next to them was a dagger and a pistol, and a bag. I grabbed the leather bag and checked its contents--there were a few food items and some bandages, but that was it. I tucked the dagger into the bag and slung it over my shoulder. I'd have taken the pistol as well, but if there had been a time when I knew how to use one I didn't remember it.

The other body groaned, catching my attention. This one was clad in a blood-soaked greyish green uniform--Resistance, then? I crept closer, hoping I was right.

The skies thundered above us and rain began to pour down from the clouds. Mud ran down my face and I could barely see, but as I searched for the soldier's wound, a memory clicked in my mind. I had done this before, but not with a human. With a...panther, of some sort? Moonlight. I swallowed back regret at abandoning her--apparently, I'd cared for her in my past.

Thankfully, the soldier's wound was not a bullet wound. It was a large cut--maybe from the dagger I'd taken? I'd thought the blade was covered in only mud, but...I grimaced and tried not to vomit.

I could tell the cut would need stitches, and also to be cleaned. I had some medical supplies I'd stolen from the hospital. I decided that I could do this, and with new resolve, began to fix the wound.

I look at Goldenfeather's map and shrug. "I don't think I've been to either of those," I say. "Let's go to the Labyrinth Lands."

Goldenfeather~

"That sounds cool. I think we should stop here for the night. My wings are getting tired."

Rolling my shoulders, I break down a few branches and make a makeshift tent. Not bad, but a little crude. Oh well, it'll do.

"Come in, it should be much better than having to stay out in the open. I speak from experience."

"You - oh. No, I'll stay on watch. I'm used to not having much sleep."

Goldenfeather shrugs and goes inside. "Suit yourself. But don't try anything," she warns. I pad around the clearing. I haven't eaten in hours. Pausing to sniff the air, I catch a whiff of rabbit and slink towards it. I crouch, tail twitching, then pounce. I bring it back to the tent, where Goldenfeather is still awake. We both eat some, and the dragon goes back to the tent.

I pace, thinking. What will the Labyrinth Lands be like? Is it still flooded? Will we go into the Labyrinth? What else is there, anyway? I hope I can get some sleep on Goldenfeather's back tomorrow.

Goldenfeather~

I thank Silverwhisker for the rabbit and carefully poke at it. I'm mostly a vegetarian, but I suppose I ought to eat the rabbit due to respect and the Dragon's Code.

I cautiously take a bite. Not bad, I think. I quickly eat the rest.

"I'll take watch now. You must be tired."

Even with Silverwhisker's protests, I step outside, then carefully shift my feathers into the tones of the jungle around me. I can't completely camoflauge with details, since I'm not very well trained, but I can shift into solid colors and a couple colors at a time.

What will the Labyrinth Lands be like? I remember some old history scrolls...is it safe?

I sigh and step into the tent. It's drier than I'm used to, sleeping in the open, but I feel closed in. Goldenfeather's keeping watch, I remind myself. It'll be fine. Curling up, I close my eyes and am instantly asleep.
I wake up just before dawn. I stretch, yawn, and amble outside, ears pricked. I frown when I don't see Goldenfeather, but when I look closer, I notice her outline camouflaged among the trees. She can do that? Wow.

Goldenfeather~

I see Silverwhisker emerge. A flash of surprise comes on her face when she realizes I can camouflage, but I simply turn the color of the skies, with a hint of white.

"When I'm flying, please tell me what color the sky changes. I don't want to be seen. People hunt me for my jewels and feathers." I snort. "Arrogant humans. Get on and let's fly."

Silverwhisker climbs on and I spread my wings, soaring above the clouds.

I close my eyes for a moment, enjoying the sensation of flying. Paralia is spread out under us like a patchwork quilt. It's still early, so there aren't many people awake. A stray gunshot echoes across the quiet city, making me jump slightly. Ahead is the ocean. The rock spires of Dagger Bay are shrouded in mist, but I can just make them out. I purr in contentment and start to wash the smell of the city off my fur.

By the way, Spirit, (sorry, that is your name, right?) do you care where Silverwhisker holds on on Goldenfeather's back? Like are there spines that she can fit between, or should she use her claws to hold on to the feathers, or... Just so I can write more descriptively :)

Yes, Spirit's my name :) *flips to the place* There are supposed to be pretty rocky spikes, so maybe Silverwhisker could hold onto those? Idk. Anyways!

Goldenfeather~

I scan the skies above, realizing it's now a light blue, and shift to that color. I scan the land, it looks flat, most people won't see us. I hiss, rocketing down and snatching up a rabbit.

"Would you like it? I mostly am vegan." I say, offering the rabbit to Silverwhisker.

Ok, thanks!

~Silverwhisker

I'm mostly full from last night's dinner, but I take the rabbit anyway, thanking Goldenfeather. You never know when there won't be a meal available. Eventually, we start flying over a sandy beach. I ask Goldenfeather to land, and she slowly spirals down after checking that no one's in sight. "Will you be able to go across the whole sea?" I ask. "We could rest here for a while if you want, or we could go the long way around, and go cross less water at a time."

Goldenfeather~

"One second. I'll be right back. We need to prepare, I mean, I think I can go over the sea. If things get to the worst, I'll land in the sea and hopefully catch some fish and rest a little."

I bound over to some leafy palm trees, sink my claws into it's trunk, and clamber up the tree, then slice off a couple of leaves and begin to stick them together using some sap I collected in one of my pouches.

"I think we're ready, I mean, uh, I have all the things we need, in my pouches." I say, "You're surprisingly light, because, uh, I haven't carried many animals."

I nod, and clamber up onto Goldenfeather's back. She takes off, and soon we're soaring over the sea. She explains to me that when we're over water, she can fly lower than she would otherwise, because there isn't anyone around to see us. She's still camouflaged, though. Just a few days ago, I was walking through the woods to Paralia on my own, I muse. Now I'm flying on the back of a dragon towards the Labyrinth. What will we find there?

Goldenfeather~

I twist around, carefully, so that Silverwhisker doesn't fall into the sea.

"The last sights of land. This is going to be a long journey, I can already tell." I murmur, then twist back and continue flapping.

I glide along the sea, dipping my talons in water. It feels better than ever. Ah, the sweet, sweet feeling of freedom.

I glance up.

"There's a storm coming our way, take the leaves and cover yourself. I'll be fine. I'm used to this." I say.

I nod, then awkwardly move the branches into position and crouch down.  "Remember to camouflage yourself," I remind Goldenfeather, but her feathers are already shifting to gray.

The rain comes. Thunder booms, and lightning flickers in the clouds above us. The leaves keep me mostly dry, and I try to sleep. I'm not very tired, but it's nice to have time to catnap.
