The dice clattered

The dice clattered on the table, Felix looking down at them lazily. The tavern around him was full of cheery laughter and talk, the lamps dim. It was midnight, and instead of sleeping, Felix was here, trying to make some extra cash.

"Doubles again, I guessed right!" Felix exclaimed, "Hand over the money!"

His opponent, a serious-looking young woman rolled her eyes and slid a pile of gold coins over. Felix grinned with satisfaction as he swept the gold coins into his purse with a pleasant clinking. "Pleasure!" he said, giving a small bow to the woman, before skipping out into the night.

Felix whistled to himself as he strolled through the streets of Paralia. The air was mild and warm, and Felix was perfectly happy to stay here and make some extra money while he figured out how to travel without getting shot by the Resistance or Catastrophe's army.

The quaint storefronts were mostly closed, with wooden boards covering the windows for the night. It wasn't quite safe anywhere anymore, but Felix could live with that, it was fine.

Felix turned a corner, and almost tripped over a tent stake.

Jumping up, Felix looked around curiously. A lime green tent was tacked to the ground, that had definitely not been there the day before. He looked up at the sign. It read 'Millie's Fortune Telling' in garishly painted rainbow letters.

Ooh! Fortune telling! Wonder how much it costs?

With not an ounce of hesitation, Felix ducked inside the tent.

Inside, it was dark, and Felix caught the strong scent of peppermint. Peculiar photos with bullet holes shot through them, and playing cards, and strange things hung from the velvet walls of the tent. A hooded figure sat at a lime green table, on which stood a single foggy crystal ball.

"Hey! What's that?" Felix greeted, pointing curiously at a certain photo, which seemed to be of a white flower, that looked unexplainably wrong.

"Nothing," the hooded figure said, "Why are you here?"

Felix shrugged. "You're a fortune teller, right?"

"Duh."

"Alright, can you tell me my fortune?!"

"It costs two coins."

Felix drew two coins from his purse, and flicked them at the fortune teller. He could've sworn that they rolled their eyes, if he could've seen their eyes.

"Alright," they said, leaning forward and placing their hands on the crystal ball, "look into the crystal ball and tell me what you see."

Felix stared into the white crystal ball. A speeding horse broke through the fog, dashing through the crystal ball, until suddenly, it keeled over, and was replaced with a white flower, sprouting from its body. The white flower swirled through the mist, growing larger and larger and larger, but then–a sudden gunshot rang out, and the crystal ball went blank.

"I saw a horse! And a white flower! And then I heard a gunshot! What does the gunshot mean?"

"The horse means you'll be traveling a lot. The white flower means regret. And the gunshot ..."

The hooded figure jumped up, and poked their head outside the tent. "The gunshot means it's time to leave."

With a swirl of green mist, Felix stumbled back, outside the tent, and watched as it folded itself up, into a tiny velvet package, and darted down an alleyway.

Felix got up, a little disorented, and looked around. People were running, and the clang of metal and sounds of fighting drifted towards him. Something had happened.

Definitely time to leave, Felix thought, pocketing the picture of the white flower he had stolen from the tent, and slipping down a side street. Paralia had fallen to fighting. It was time to do some traveling.

"Ghost. Don't hurt him. We don't need a dead body here." The words are out of my mouth before I realise how heartless it sounds, and I wince. "Look, Ryann, yes, she did work for Catastrophe. But that was a long time ago, and she's changed. I, for one, can assure you that I am no friend to the child king." I spit the word out with venom in my voice. "We're just here to find a friend. Can you help us?" It takes a second before I realise that - duh - Ryann can't understand me without a Cypher. I glance at Chasm for help, who translates my weird little speech.

Ryann's gaze darts from me to Chasm to the shapeshifter at his throat.

"Ghost, can you take the gag out?" I ask her, and she shifts her glare to me before reluctantly taking the cloth off Ryann.

Then he says, "I... guess... I can work out something. You'll have to talk to the others at the Outpost..."

Knowing Ryann won't understand me, I ask, "Do you want to go or not? I'll go with you whatever you decide."

Ghost~

I think for a minute.

"I think we'll go. And Mr. Officer...if you try anything, you're dead. And definitely, mister bossy child is not my king- for I don't need a king, I'm my own queen."

I grin. This shall be fun.

To clarify, Chasm is part of the Resistance, right? So the Outpost people would know him?
~Silverwhisker
I give Ghost a slightly amused look before following Ryann towards the west. He has Chasm bring up the rear - probably to make sure we - well, Ghost - don't try anything, but I notice Ghost really trusts the fox-boy. The sun is coming up when we finally reach the Outpost, and I'm glad we're there because my fur is made for snow, not hot sand.
The base is wide, with thick wooden walls surrounding all but the front gate. Two sentries stand in front of the gate. One nods to Ryann and Chasm and asks, "Who are those two?"
The other is staring at Ghost like he might recognise her. I know we have to get through the gate fast.

Ghost~

Luckily, I'm still in a wolf's form, so I whisper to Silver, in wolf language.

"The one on the right's named Specklefeather. He's an owl-human hybrid. No idea how that happened. The one on the left's one of my captors. I think his name was Talons. Eagle-human hybrid. Again, no idea. We should be more aware of the left-sided one. Stick with Chasm at all times. Hide your face as much as possible. Be inconspicious. I probably need to hide more than you. THey're probably still hunting me down."

Chasm is talking right now.

"These are two friends, they're here to search for another friend, plus one of them comes from snowy places, and needs to get to shade quick. The other one is my old childhood friend, you know, back from the woods. She's a shapeshifter as well."

"Is she Ghost?"

"No."

I make my voice way higher than usual. "Who's Ghost? My name is Astra."

"Very well then. Come in."

The doors swing open, revealing the Outpost.

~

Yes, Chasm's part of the Resistance, so the Oupost people would know him.

I sigh in relief as we're ushered through the gates. We're not safe yet, but the first part is over. I regret my sigh of relief as soon as I see all the faces inside. Staring at us. Maybe not actually, but it feels like it. Ghost - in wolf form - is keeping her head down. I move to her side, next to her head, so I block their view of her mark.

There are tents to either side of us, and at the end of the row is a wooden house that quietly draws eyes to it. Chasm brings us straight there, probably directly to their leader. Maybe a good idea if we're looking for Golden, but I don't like drawing so much attention to ourselves. I hope Chasm knows what he's doing. If Ghost trusts him, so can I, right? No. Not really. I can't trust blindly like that.

Chasm knocks on the door. "Come in," says a high-pitched voice from inside, and Chasm pushes it open. I glance at Ghost before stalking in.

Ghost~

I whisper carefully in silver's ear, "You can trust Chasm. He and I were childhood friends."

I shift my fur color to gray with a white underside.

Chasm pushes open the door.

"My lord, these 2 wish to find an old friend.", he says, bowing.

I follow his example, my keys and pouches covering my silver mark. My eyes carefully shift to a blue, unlike the last time I went there- they were silver.

Silverwhisker looks nervous.

"Hello, my lord. Do you know of a dragon named Goldenfeather?" I say, my voice an octave higher than normal.

The man tilst his head. "Goldenfeather... Goldenfeather... yellow dragon with feathers? Green eyes?"

Ghost nods eagerly.

The man says, "Nope, never heard of her."

I bare my teeth in a snarl. "Yes, you have, and you will bring us to her. Now."

I check the door- it's closed. From experience, I know it's soundproof and that there are no guards inside the building.

I leap onto the man, claws outstretched, and pin him to the wall with several sharp daggers.

"Tell us where goldenfeather is. Or...let's just say, you'll have some trouble." I hiss, my blue catlike pupils dilating into thin stripes.

"O-okay. She came a few days ago. A patrol boat found her and recruited her. In less than twenty-four hours, when we did a background check, we discovered she'd been with Catastrophe." the man says nervously.

I squint at him. The claw on my left paw throbs. Did I stub it on the way here? But I know he's lying. I don't know how, but I know that's not the whole story. And Golden definitely wasn't with the child king. I shake my head ever so slightly at Ghost. Then I realise it doesn't matter. If he can bring us to Goldenfeather, we can figure it out then, right? Why would he lie, though? I have so many questions. They come out in a snarl. "Where is she now?"

He shifts nervously. The dagger cuts into his shoulder. "Did I tell you my name? I'm Adoni."

Ghost snarls. "You're dodging the question, and I'm losing patience."

"The dragon is in our dungeon."

I lunge towards him. "WHAT did you just say?"

Ghost~

Silverwhisker pins him to the wall completely, hurting his shoulder.

"Alright, listen up here Mister I'm so smart, we all know that Golden is with the child king. But I can convince her...TAKE US TO THE DUNGEONS OR I WILL KILL YOU." I screech.

"O-okay, p-please c-come w-with me.."

He leads us outside, and suddenly screams, "GUARDS! CATCH THESE THREE AND THROW THEM IN THE DUNGEONS!"

An army of guards- probably about 30- comes over.

"2v30, we can do this." I hiss, pulling out my weapons and shifting into the human form of me.

"SO MUCH FOR STAYING INCONSPICIOUS!"

I sprout feathery wings and take to the skies, flipping stars, daggers, and whatnot over the guards. Then I pull out my pistol and start shooting, before diving down, seeing Chasm and Silverwhisker fighting the remaining guards.

"CHASS!" I screech, "SHIFT INTO A BIRD, WE'RE TAKING TO THE SKIES! SILVER, HANG ON!"

I dive down, taking Silver with me, and the 3 of us fly into the skies, me dropping a fire bomb down below just in case.

"Didn't go exactly as planned," I comment as we soar back east, towards the Labyrinth.

Ghost snorts. "To say the least. Now what?"

There's a silence as we think.

Then Chasm says, "We'll have to sneak in. With two shapeshifters -"

"And a lynx specialising in stealth," I remind him.

"- Right. It shouldn't be a problem, right?"

"Nah, 'course it won't."

We land near the entrance of the labyrinth. I look up- apparently the night is coming soon...

I sigh, then start setting up camp.

"C'mon y'all. We're gonna have to say here...until I rip that damned leader's heart out of his body!" i hiss. "I'll go catch some rabbits or something."

Chasm nods nervously.

Heh I kept writing Golden instead of Ghost lol. Sorry for the late reply

~Silverwhisker

I hiss at Ghost's words. "Sorry. I'm a little annoyed. I mean we were So. Close." I start clawing the sand out of equal impatience and irritation. "Can I hunt with you? I need something to do."

Ghost nods, and we prowl together farther away from the Labyrinth entrance, leaving Chasm to set up camp.

Hey! SOrry for not replying for a long itme...

Ghost~

I'm currently pacing around a tree. I shift into a human and pull out my bow, aiming at the tree- then I realize a fox is right behind me.

I screech and scamper up the tree, my bow flying towards my hand. I catch it, and point it at the fox.

The tree is obviously going to tip over at any second, so I'm forced to jump to another tree- which I successfully pull off. I notch the arrow and release the string, and the fox falls, dead.

~Silverwhisker

"Nice catch!" I exclaim, padding out of the trees with a dead rabbit in my mouth. "You're a good shot."

Goldenfeather smiles and dips her head. I hesitate, but I'm really curious, so I ask, "So what's with you and Chasm?"
