Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

I don't think I've written a poem since I was in second grade, (it was about hand sanitizer, for anyone who's interested. XD) and I wrote this very late at night. And there is no specific mention of ghosts, although it is shadowed that Icarus is a ghost. Or something. But ta-ta! I wrote a poem about Icarus, even though it is completely cliché. And the rythm is off. And I really don't like the word 'twas. But it's pretty good for a first attempt, I think.

touching the sun

Was it only yesterday

we flew as one?

Skimming the ocean,

touching the sun?

Was it only yesterday

I warned him, "return?"

Come down my son,

the sun can burn.

Perhaps 'twas yesterday,

or years ago.

Years since I saw him last—

but no.

It was only yesterday

I saw my son,

skimming the ocean,

touching the sun.

Okay, fine, you got me. I like writing. Okay, here goes.
The stars are barely visible
All because of the fog that never lifts around me
like ghosts haunting my dreams
the bitterness of ice as it hits my fingers
the coldness of water, swirling around me
I can't take it anymore

cordelia

she heard the stories of haunting pasts

warn-torn minds with memories always sticking icy fingers down people's backs

the ones with no life in their eyes;

for her the ghosts were different.

little whisps and whispers came to her at night, too

but they weren't ghosts; they'd never lived.

they reminded her of all the things she never did

and lives she did not change

every time she could have strayed from the paved path and braved the wild, and didn't

they tugged at her heart and got into her veins and took little pieces from her the longer she ignored them

and, slowly, she began to decay

the same as those who had no chance of escape-

the demise she met was brought upon herself

and she, too, became a ghost.

*Bursts back into this thread*

Terribly sorry, friends and comrades! I have been whisked away by the whirlwind of life and school and have neglected this dear lovely thread, but I'm back! And now, for the judging...

First, I just wanted to say that each of these poems was amazing, and each had something special about it. I wish I could have chosen more winners, but alas, then it would not be a contest. Without further ado...

Honorable Mention goes to...  Spirit!

Your poem was short, but effective, and you managed to say a lot with very few words, something not many people can do. It was haunting and wintery and I especially liked the impact of the last line, "I can't take it anymore". *cue ghostly shivers*

In Third Place we have... Snazzycakes!

I loved the sense of atmosphere that you created. Every line had a sense of mystery and presence around it. You had a really cool take on the theme too! It's a really interesting idea to think about what if there really were ghosts all around us, haunting our words and empty spaces. I especially liked the imagery in the phrase "winter's wind on cracking ice".

In Second Place is... Jaybells!

Your writing throughout your entire poem is gorgeous. I love the image of the sunken ship - it made me think of a swirling storm of memories lost at sea. Your rhyming was really natural and fluid - I especially liked the combination of "Lost to the wind/Attentions rescind". What really drew it all to a close was the way that you asked and answered a question at the end. I thought that was a really nice and powerful way to say goodbye to the ghosts of memory.

AND in First Place (drrrrumroll please!)... Luna-Starr!

The best thing about your poem was the way you told a story. I could picture Cordelia in my mind, haunted by ghosts and by the past as she slowly became one herself. Every line is powerful and beautiful and I love how you weave in so many subtle details to each one. You can feel how trapped and regretful Cordelia is, and your ending was a very clever one indeed.

Great job and congratulations to everyone, and I can't wait to see what you write next!

*side note: I thought of this prompt back in September and didn't even realize that it would be spooky season by the time I was judging! So all of your poems fit perfectly within the vibes of October and Halloween and I appreciate it greatly :)
