Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

My Treasure Chest

Once I sailed the seven seas

Pirates crying "Wait for me!"

Never a cloud in the sea-toned sky

Eagle's screech

Dolphin's cry

Boarded a ship with a "Yo-ho-ho!"

Found no friendships

Had to go

They told me "We have gold and jewels!"

They don't have that

Silly fools

They told me "We must find some more!

Come with us, find your score!"

I didn't want their coins and bracelets

Belts and glasses

Trinkets, cups

What I sought was far more precious

I'd once had some

They'd had nought

They asked me "How to find this treasure?

Tell us how, we be quite clever."

I told them they'd not find a map

A compass

Tip

For any of that

So they bid me farewell

I took my ship

I left

The Captain cried, in his harsh clip:

"Good luck, my friend! I hope you find

Your prize!"

I looked him in the eye

I paddled back

I asked, "You mean it?

Friend?"

He said he thought I'd known it

All along

I shook his hand

I said I'd stay

They cheered

When the sun set that day

I'd found my prize

My treasure chest

I'd had it all along

Perhaps you do too

This is a poem to my best friend that she'll probably never read (she's not on here and I'm too self conscious about sharing my writing... but maybe I'll give it to her for her birthday. Who knows?) so if you don't get some stuff it's referencing inside jokes.

~~

The Most Important Days

The day I waved Hello

back on the first day of kindergarten

and you looked at me like I was crazy

was one of the most important days of my life.

The day I waved Hello,

and-- shyly--

you waved back and sat down next to me

was one of the most important moments in my life.

The day I slept over at your house

for the first time ever

was the most important sleepover-

except maybe for the hundreds of ones that followed.

The day on my sixth birthday

when you were the only guest on my "party" list

was one of the best birthdays of my life.

(Though, Disneyland may have helped as well.)

The days we spent

secretly sharing food

under the lunch tables at school

were some of the best lunches.

(Along with Mr. and Mrs. pea,

eating trees, and when I said "disgustingsicle.")

The day in third grade

when I tried to scare you and you tried to scare me

but we ended up scaring each other.

The awful Friday in fourth grade

where I cried so much

and you cried with me.

The day when we were ten

and went to Disneyland

-again-

and discovered ear threes,

naming the ducks,

and being too scared to ride the roller coaster

is a memory I'll always remember.

The week of Camp Hollywoodland I

convinced you to do with me,

When we almost got hypothermia in the pool,

sang "Let It Go" at the top of our voices

just to annoy Cabin 5

And when we got top bunks right next to each other.

The day when you tried to teach me the renegade

and I gave up after the first minute

and we laughed,

will make me think of TikTok with better than awful thoughts.

The day we hid

and your mom thought we disappeared

into thin air

was the best "prank" I ever pulled.

All the days in distance learning

when we texted each other

and we probably should've been paying attention

but still somehow got good grades.

The day I waved Hello and you waved back

changed my life.

All the hugs, sleepovers, inside jokes--

thank you.

For everything.

Love always,

Lucy

Awwwww this is so amazing! I can perfectly see your friendship and this perfectly captures the feeling of a best friend. You should totally give this to her for her birthday.

Thank you so much!! That's exactly what I was going for. Rereading it, there's some stuff I would change (in the first stanza, I don't like the wording I chose) so I'll probably edit it a little bit before I give it to her, but I do overall really like this poem.

Agh it's been so long since I participated in this contest *facepalms* I'm glad to see it's still going though!

transfixed

if a friendship could ever feel akin to

a knife in the gut, slowly twisting,

you're the one with a hand at my back pulling me in

and the other on the blade's hilt, your pretty face masked in honesty

as my blood spills over your fingers,

as the steadiness you possess eases my soul out of my body,

my eyes fixed on yours til the end

close enough to kiss, but too far to make it

Wow. That's intense, and kind of a new twist on the theme. I like it.

Ok, sorry this is so late, guys!

Honarable mentions, in no particular order:

Nyx! Your poem was so creative, I love how you told a story with it as well as rhyming! I was a bit confused at parts, though.

Kitten! I especially like all the little aspects of friendship you included, and it has a really nice rhthym, good job!

Luminescence! Your poem was so sweet, it really makes me think of all the happy, bubbly feelings of having a good friend. I bet your BFF will love it!

3rd place- Snazzycakes! This poem I think we can all relate to- too often I meet people I would've loved to get to know, but never did, and your poem is a wonderful testament to that. I also love the repeating lines you included!

2nd place- WordSong! This one was just so relatable, I have so many friendships that feel exactly like this, and the way you wrote was shows how heartbreaking it can be. "Another crack in the perfect spiderweb dividing my heart." and "an invisible tear slips down your cheek./I catch it, and cradle it" are my favorite lines.

1st place- Leafy! I love how you took the theme to a darker place, because friendship can be very complicated and sometimes it hurts. The similes (they're similes, right?) you used conveyed the feeling of it so well, and the last line was just. so good.

ajebgzhh this was so hard, seriously!

Joining for fun, but because its been a year since Ive written poetry, this is going to be trash.

Already Gone

You say come back,

its hard without me,

You plead and beg,

weep and wail,

down on your knees,

but Im already gone.

The cold November air is cutting

through my dented heart,

the rain is washing

away my tears,

You call again,

but Im already gone.

Ive forgotton

the curve of your face

and the sound of your voice,

Although you still remember,

you're already gone.
