Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Monthly Book Club
So I was...

So I was looking at old threads and came across this book club thread from Fidelity (May 2020): http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/blababoutbooks/node/436614

and thought it was such a good idea that it was such a pity to let it go... so here we are! I think maybe for this one (if enough ppl, let's say at least 5 (cuz that sounds good, no other reason) ppl join) we should have a list of ppl who just volunteer a book for each month, and two ppl do it every month so if you don't like one book, hopefully the second one will more fit your tastes (and if not, you can always sit out a round (or give the book a try anyways! I did that with York: the Shadow Cipher, and did NOT regret it)) so that way we don't take a long time deciding which book to read and everyone who wants to can have a chance. I think we'll have the list in order of who signs up first? Idk, everyone feel free to veto me on anything I say here, I have never been in a book club before (tho I would love to be in one! And I HAVE done one book battle if that counts). But anyways, maybe some rules/guidelines?:

1. Everything has to be CB appropriate (oc!) and try to be accessible for all ages

2. Be respectful of everyone's comments and choices (also oc!)

3. Be mindful of spoilers, some ppl just don't appreciate them! I think we'll meet on the last day of every month to talk about a book, that way hopefully everyone will have one or both books finished, and discussions don't have to be limited to the end of the month. That's when ppl can start posting spoilers, so be mindful of that! I'm also aware some ppl (like my friends) who like to read out of order, that's totally fine too! Just pls, as I said, be very mindful that you don't give anything away.

4. Take turns and if someone on the list doesn't give a book by the end of one week past the last day of the month (e.g. if the last day is Jan 31, deadline is by the end of Feb 7), then I'm afraid we'll have to skip you entirely until your next natural turn so ppl have time to get and finish a book

5. For the two ppl picking books per month, maybe try to have different books from each other each month so ppl have choices? And you can pick a book you've already read or haven't yet but it sounds good, it doesn't really matter. Just hopefully everyone can access it.

6. Pls try to label what ages you think the book would be and if it's idk scary or has death or something in any way for more sensitive readers? But try to without spoilers??

7. No limit/deadline for joining

8. I'm wondering if ppl are ok with poetry books too? I mean, I think definitely in-Verse and prose, but are you guys fine with just poetry collections? Just putting that out there.

Hope this was all clear enough and covered everything, thanks! And do you guys think a month is long enough? I'm not entirely sure what you guys' book speeds are and plus if you have busy schedules and lots of homework. I can read at least a book a day maybe(depending on schedule and hw) but idk you guys. We can switch to meet every two months if needed, or something else. Also, if everyone can't make the last day of a month, I think I'll just make the last seven days (or 5 days?) open for discussion/spoilers? Everyone pls correct me or tell me if I'm missing anything, thank you. And ACKK I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS IF PPL WANT TO DO IT!!

Sounds cool! School's starting soon but I'll do my best to participate.

Name: Pangolin

What books do you like to read?: anything, really! I like all sorts of fantasy - urban/contemporary fantasy especially. Historical fiction, sci-fi if it's well done, and realistic fiction are cool too. I've been reading a lot of nonfiction lately as well.

What books will you be interested in reading?: anything listed above! preferably with well-developed characters and lgbtq+ rep :)

Would you like to be in the list to suggest books?: yeah, sure!

Time needed to finish an average book (estimated): depends on how interesting the book is and how busy I am. Definitely no longer than a week. 1-4 days, I guess.

Access to library/online sources?: Library, but it's really slow and if I order popular books I'll be put on a queue, plus my library's under construction so I can only pick up books on Saturdays. ...so yeah it'd be helpful if the books were announced as soon as possible so I can have a fighting chance of getting them on time.

This sounds fun! I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks to everyone who've signed up so far! I didn't really anticipate that it would be so fast so I think that maybe Amarillis and Moon Wolf could start suggesting books now, taking into consideration what everyone likes? As I said, I don't know how this will go either, so... I should've probably asked the due date for Library books. In my experience, it's 3 weeks, and you can always renew for another 3 weeks, so I think it might be fine to borrow/put on hold now? And it seemed like 1 month will probably be enough, correct me if I'm wrong. Ig I might as well fill out my form too.

Name: CelineBurning Bright

What books do you like to read?: EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING!! My favorites are realistic fiction, fantasy, clever books, and just any type of fiction though. I also like horror, mystery, crime, short story, poetry, nonfiction, historical, scifi, classics, ultra-long books, short books... even picture books!

What books will you be interested in reading?: books with really diverse representation and books that make you think/think a different way.

Would you like to be in the list to suggest books?: sure!

Time needed to finish an average book (estimated): as I said, it depends on the schedule and homework, which is hard to estimate as I'm transferring so I'm not certain how things will be, maybe 2-3 days to be safe? Also depends on how interesting and length oc. Let's do 3-4.

Access to library/online sources?: I have access to three libraries: school, public, and public, so hopefully that'll help some. I also have access to three online libraries that my libraries provide.

Other: I'm excited for this and hope we can at least finish one book! :)

And just to make clear, this still hasn't started yet. Starts on the first day of Sep. You can start getting books though!

Other: I'm not sure how busy I'll be with school, so hopefully I'll be able to do this consistently...

Name: Endless_Parodies, but you can call me either Endless or Parody.

What books do you like to read?: I used to be obsessed (by obsessed, I mean I loved it so much it was all I'd talk about) with the Wings of Fire series. I love reading Greystone Secrets, too, I love Emma, too, and The Hunger Games (including TBoSS). If you mean the types of books, probably sci-fi/fantasy or realistic fiction.

What books will you be interested in reading?: Probably fantasy, a few classics, things that are PG-13, please. I don't love excessive gore, or anything nasty.

Would you like to be in the list to suggest books?: Yes, please! Just tell me when.

Time needed to finish an average book (estimated): Mm...It depends on my schedule. For an average book, a day or two. Probably a day, if I have nothing better to do. If I have stuff to do, then two-to-three days.

Access to library/online sources?: Yes, actually--both.

Other: I'm literally so excited for this. I haven't found a book club in a while.

Thank you to everyone (so so much) who's joined so far!!

Just making clear, this starts on Sep 1 (eek, why did I make the date SO FAR AWAY!!!), tho you can start placing books on hold/borrowing now. Amarillis just suggested the first book we'll be reading (thank you amarillis!!), Julieta and the Romeos, which I've actually been wanting to read bc of the various recommendations on here, AND my library has, so yayy!! Hope this works for everyone else too! Another reminder, pls suggest books by the end of the first week of the month you've been assigned, or else we may have to skip your turn. And because I feel like I'm doing a summary now, here's a list of everyone who has joined so far and when you can suggest books (tell me if I forgot someone!):

The month of September: amarillis (Julieta and the Romeos) and Moon Wolf

October: Pangolin and Me (CelineBurning Bright, and yes, Ik I should prob put myself last but I got impatient)

November: Hawkstar and Wafflecat

December: Endless_Parodies

Let's try to keep this going till at least Dec (and hopefully long after!!!)
