Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Monthly Book Club
So I was...

So I was looking at old threads and came across this book club thread from Fidelity (May 2020): http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/blababoutbooks/node/436614

and thought it was such a good idea that it was such a pity to let it go... so here we are! I think maybe for this one (if enough ppl, let's say at least 5 (cuz that sounds good, no other reason) ppl join) we should have a list of ppl who just volunteer a book for each month, and two ppl do it every month so if you don't like one book, hopefully the second one will more fit your tastes (and if not, you can always sit out a round (or give the book a try anyways! I did that with York: the Shadow Cipher, and did NOT regret it)) so that way we don't take a long time deciding which book to read and everyone who wants to can have a chance. I think we'll have the list in order of who signs up first? Idk, everyone feel free to veto me on anything I say here, I have never been in a book club before (tho I would love to be in one! And I HAVE done one book battle if that counts). But anyways, maybe some rules/guidelines?:

1. Everything has to be CB appropriate (oc!) and try to be accessible for all ages

2. Be respectful of everyone's comments and choices (also oc!)

3. Be mindful of spoilers, some ppl just don't appreciate them! I think we'll meet on the last day of every month to talk about a book, that way hopefully everyone will have one or both books finished, and discussions don't have to be limited to the end of the month. That's when ppl can start posting spoilers, so be mindful of that! I'm also aware some ppl (like my friends) who like to read out of order, that's totally fine too! Just pls, as I said, be very mindful that you don't give anything away.

4. Take turns and if someone on the list doesn't give a book by the end of one week past the last day of the month (e.g. if the last day is Jan 31, deadline is by the end of Feb 7), then I'm afraid we'll have to skip you entirely until your next natural turn so ppl have time to get and finish a book

5. For the two ppl picking books per month, maybe try to have different books from each other each month so ppl have choices? And you can pick a book you've already read or haven't yet but it sounds good, it doesn't really matter. Just hopefully everyone can access it.

6. Pls try to label what ages you think the book would be and if it's idk scary or has death or something in any way for more sensitive readers? But try to without spoilers??

7. No limit/deadline for joining

8. I'm wondering if ppl are ok with poetry books too? I mean, I think definitely in-Verse and prose, but are you guys fine with just poetry collections? Just putting that out there.

Hope this was all clear enough and covered everything, thanks! And do you guys think a month is long enough? I'm not entirely sure what you guys' book speeds are and plus if you have busy schedules and lots of homework. I can read at least a book a day maybe(depending on schedule and hw) but idk you guys. We can switch to meet every two months if needed, or something else. Also, if everyone can't make the last day of a month, I think I'll just make the last seven days (or 5 days?) open for discussion/spoilers? Everyone pls correct me or tell me if I'm missing anything, thank you. And ACKK I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS IF PPL WANT TO DO IT!!

aah i didn't find juliet and the romeos in my library, unfortunately, so i can only do the warriors book, if that's okay

Favorite character(s)? Fireheart, Graystripe, Spottedleaf

Least favorite character(s)? Brokenstar, Tigerclaw

Character(s)/Situation(s) you can most relate to? the hard decision of choosing which of the double lives you want to live

Favorite thing(s) about the book? the characters and the plot

Least favorite thing(s) about the book? the cliffhanger

What did you think the book did well? setting and descriptions

What did you think the book could have done better on? maybe making things more clear

First impression on the book? slightly confusing but great

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being HORRIBLE I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE THIS BOOK (loathing, truly, deeply, loathing...) and 10 being THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD ACKKKKKK!!!!, what would you rate this book? 8.5

I am still reading Julieta and the Romeos (I have to wait till no one's watching till I take it out bc I don't usually read romance and don't want to answer any questions so it's slow going, sorry), but here's from when I read the first Warriors book about 1 year ago bc my friends LOVE it so I thought, why not!

CONTAINS SPOILERS

Favorite character(s)? Spottedleaf, Yellowfang (I think), Sandpaw

Least favorite character(s)? Maybe Fireheart? And that one cat when Graystripe was just Rusty?? I'm not making much sense nvm... but I recall lots were pretty annoying.

Character(s)/Situation(s) you can most relate to? Uhh

Favorite thing(s) about the book? I guess some things were interesting, and some of the descriptions were good

Least favorite thing(s) about the book? Lots, the beginning, honestly I didn't really understand the whole thing with Graypaw and Spotted Leaf (I think) but oh well. Also when some favorites died.

What did you think the book did well? See favorite things

What did you think the book could have done better on? As Moon Wolf said, making things clear. I was very confused on that first scene with the battle and stuff. The introduction with everyone/glossary or whatever was cool but also confusing.

First impression on the book? Confusing and I don't get it and not as great as my expectations, also I don't like the cover which is trivial but I judge greatly on covers. It started getting better as it went on though, but not enough for me to finish the series or even start the second book. It's great my friends can have whole discussions and what ifs with the series that are interesting to listen to and devour again and again the extra books and legends (it was like the only things they checked out were the same warrior books again and again) and basically the whole series though!

Eh. 5.5 ranging to 6

Other: but yay for you warriors fans!!

submitted by Nyxie
(September 22, 2023 - 7:18 pm)

It is not too late! The books chosen were:

Julieta and the Romeos (thank you amari!)

Warriors: Into The Wild (thank you Moon Wolf!)

enjoy! You may want to try to read a bit quicker though (oc, I'm only on like chp 3 of Julieta rn, so..)

Julieta and the Romeos! I recently finished the third Warriors book and didn't want to accidentally spoil anything about the later books (aka "wait, do you know about __ yet? ...oh, i guess you didn't")

BTW THIS HAS SO MANY SPOILERS SO BEWARE!!!!

Favorite character(s)? Julieta and Ivy, ofc :)

Least favorite character(s)? Calvin, because idk, he just rubbed me the wrong way

Character(s)/Situation(s) you can most relate to? I have literally no idea

Favorite thing(s) about the book? I loved wondering who the heck HappilyEverDrafter was, and then I loved the way it turned out and made you see things from a more minor character's pov :)

Least favorite thing(s) about the book? AAARGH SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO END UP WITH LUCAS NOOOOOO IT ENDED WRONG HUMPH. i shipped the wrong people

What did you think the book did well? Again, I really liked how it made me frantically wonder who HappilyEverDrafter was, and I did NOT anticipate how it would turn out. I loved it anyway though :) and wow, I'm using a lot of smilies today

What did you think the book could have done better on? The actual plot of the story Julieta was writing was kinda dull -- for me, anyway. I felt like there should have been more character development, and I felt like I didn't really care how the story would turn out.

First impression on the book? Can't remember...I may or may not have gotten my hands on this book in August and...kind of...finished it before September even started...

Hmm, maybe 7.5? I liked it but just didn't love it.

Other: nothing, I think? I know perfectly well though that the minute I submit this I'll think of something...alas. :D

PS Thanks amaryllis for choosing this!! I normally wouldn't read something like this but this was really good!
