Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Monthly Book Club
So I was...

So I was looking at old threads and came across this book club thread from Fidelity (May 2020): http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/blababoutbooks/node/436614

and thought it was such a good idea that it was such a pity to let it go... so here we are! I think maybe for this one (if enough ppl, let's say at least 5 (cuz that sounds good, no other reason) ppl join) we should have a list of ppl who just volunteer a book for each month, and two ppl do it every month so if you don't like one book, hopefully the second one will more fit your tastes (and if not, you can always sit out a round (or give the book a try anyways! I did that with York: the Shadow Cipher, and did NOT regret it)) so that way we don't take a long time deciding which book to read and everyone who wants to can have a chance. I think we'll have the list in order of who signs up first? Idk, everyone feel free to veto me on anything I say here, I have never been in a book club before (tho I would love to be in one! And I HAVE done one book battle if that counts). But anyways, maybe some rules/guidelines?:

1. Everything has to be CB appropriate (oc!) and try to be accessible for all ages

2. Be respectful of everyone's comments and choices (also oc!)

3. Be mindful of spoilers, some ppl just don't appreciate them! I think we'll meet on the last day of every month to talk about a book, that way hopefully everyone will have one or both books finished, and discussions don't have to be limited to the end of the month. That's when ppl can start posting spoilers, so be mindful of that! I'm also aware some ppl (like my friends) who like to read out of order, that's totally fine too! Just pls, as I said, be very mindful that you don't give anything away.

4. Take turns and if someone on the list doesn't give a book by the end of one week past the last day of the month (e.g. if the last day is Jan 31, deadline is by the end of Feb 7), then I'm afraid we'll have to skip you entirely until your next natural turn so ppl have time to get and finish a book

5. For the two ppl picking books per month, maybe try to have different books from each other each month so ppl have choices? And you can pick a book you've already read or haven't yet but it sounds good, it doesn't really matter. Just hopefully everyone can access it.

6. Pls try to label what ages you think the book would be and if it's idk scary or has death or something in any way for more sensitive readers? But try to without spoilers??

7. No limit/deadline for joining

8. I'm wondering if ppl are ok with poetry books too? I mean, I think definitely in-Verse and prose, but are you guys fine with just poetry collections? Just putting that out there.

Hope this was all clear enough and covered everything, thanks! And do you guys think a month is long enough? I'm not entirely sure what you guys' book speeds are and plus if you have busy schedules and lots of homework. I can read at least a book a day maybe(depending on schedule and hw) but idk you guys. We can switch to meet every two months if needed, or something else. Also, if everyone can't make the last day of a month, I think I'll just make the last seven days (or 5 days?) open for discussion/spoilers? Everyone pls correct me or tell me if I'm missing anything, thank you. And ACKK I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS IF PPL WANT TO DO IT!!

I'd love to join, but I'm really busy so maybe not every month. Cool idea though!

Name: Hex

What books do you like to read?: mostly fantasy or sci-fi, usually YA or adult stuff. I don't really like romance, but if it adds to the plot in a meaningful way I guess I'm okay with it.

What books will you be interested in reading?: I mean preferrably the kind of books I like to read but I'm open to other stuff.

Would you like to be in the list to suggest books?: sure

Time needed to finish an average book (estimated): uhhh again I'm really busy + it depends on how interesting the book is, but I'll say like a week just to be on the safe side.

Access to library/online sources?: Local library.

Other: I don't know if I'll be joining this month because high school's starting and all sorts of other crazy stuff + the book doesn't look super interesting to me (sorry to anyone who likes YA romance, but it just isn't my thing). I'll let you know if I do end up making time though! It's possible.

It's fine if you don't have enough time to read (if you decide to tho, remember discussion is still open after the month ends), we're glad that you decided to join here anyways, even if not for this month. Just updating, you can suggest a book in Dec with Parody! Love your location btw!

I requested Julieta and the Romeos from the library idk when it will get here

I might suggest Warriors: Into the Wild if any of you have read this before, as you probably know that it's my favorite series. It's basically about a housecat who ventures into the forest and discovers clans of cats living there.

This is a great idea, I'd love to try it out!

Name: Lupine

What books do you like to read?: I mostly read middle grade with a little YA. My favorite genres are fantasy and realistic fiction.

What books will you be interested in reading?: I really like graphic novels, anything set during the WWII time period, or books adapted from classics (like the Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy graphic novel)

Would you like to be in the list to suggest books?: Yes!

Time needed to finish an average book (estimated): a week and a half?

Access to library/online sources?: I have online and in-person library access.

Other: Also, if anyone is looking for more ebook/audiobook access, the Brooklyn
Public Library has a great program where they'll give an online library
card to any teen in the US (to fight book banning/general lack of
access to books; and because it's Brooklyn they of course have SO MANY
books!)

Name: Sylvazia

What books do you like to read?: Fantasy, Realistic fiction, I guess other stuff too, historical fiction maybe? @Celine I really like the idea of having poetry collections!

What books will you be interested in reading?: romance is fine although not all the time, fantasy, LGBTQ+ books, most kinds of fiction, I like weird fantasy books, like I have one called "The Eyes and the Impossible" from the POV of a dog in a park, who can run really fast (like faster than light)

Would you like to be in the list to suggest books?: YES!

Time needed to finish an average book (estimated): about a week, sometimes more or less. I usually am reading multiple books at a time, sometimes one for school, and sometimes multiple for my fun. I was reading 3 at one point this week :)

Access to library/online sources?: School library, public library, and friends with large collections of books

Other: This seems really fun! I'll try to do it when I can but I might not always be able to if I'm busy. Also, the captcha thing is "ugmug" which I find really funny for some reason.

I don't think I'm going to participate this month - high school's starting, and that's going to be really stressful, so I just want to make everything as easy as possible for myself. I'll try to participate next month, though! :)

Ok! Thanks for letting us know! Hope high school won't be too stressful for you! And @Moon Wolf, sorry, Ik this is pretty close to the start, but you are suggesting Warriors, right? Bc you said "might" so I wasn't so sure, but maybe (probably) I'm reading too much into one word...?

Hey everyone...

So I feel really terrible about this, because I basically suggested a book and then disappeared. Heh.

Anyway, so I sadly have to say that I can't continue with the book club at this present moment, because of the craziness with 8th grade--homework, sports, theater club, PSATS--i am just so overwhelmed and although I may have enough time to read a book, it's going to take forever and honestly just stressful, since I also have to talk about it as well. Usually I'd love this but I just can't rn.

I'm really sorry!!! I'll let you know when I can start reading in this book club again! :)

It's definitely fine! Join whenever you can, no pressure, and hope you don't get too stressed out! Thanks for letting you know and best of luck with that busy schedule! <3

Just confirming, we can still read your book, too? Or do you want to be in the discussion? I think ppl have already borrowed it though so...

Yeah that's fine I don't mind :) And obviously since people have already borrowed it I don't want it to be a hassle, you know?

Thanks for being chill about it!
