Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Monthly Book Club
So I was...

So I was looking at old threads and came across this book club thread from Fidelity (May 2020): http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/blababoutbooks/node/436614

and thought it was such a good idea that it was such a pity to let it go... so here we are! I think maybe for this one (if enough ppl, let's say at least 5 (cuz that sounds good, no other reason) ppl join) we should have a list of ppl who just volunteer a book for each month, and two ppl do it every month so if you don't like one book, hopefully the second one will more fit your tastes (and if not, you can always sit out a round (or give the book a try anyways! I did that with York: the Shadow Cipher, and did NOT regret it)) so that way we don't take a long time deciding which book to read and everyone who wants to can have a chance. I think we'll have the list in order of who signs up first? Idk, everyone feel free to veto me on anything I say here, I have never been in a book club before (tho I would love to be in one! And I HAVE done one book battle if that counts). But anyways, maybe some rules/guidelines?:

1. Everything has to be CB appropriate (oc!) and try to be accessible for all ages

2. Be respectful of everyone's comments and choices (also oc!)

3. Be mindful of spoilers, some ppl just don't appreciate them! I think we'll meet on the last day of every month to talk about a book, that way hopefully everyone will have one or both books finished, and discussions don't have to be limited to the end of the month. That's when ppl can start posting spoilers, so be mindful of that! I'm also aware some ppl (like my friends) who like to read out of order, that's totally fine too! Just pls, as I said, be very mindful that you don't give anything away.

4. Take turns and if someone on the list doesn't give a book by the end of one week past the last day of the month (e.g. if the last day is Jan 31, deadline is by the end of Feb 7), then I'm afraid we'll have to skip you entirely until your next natural turn so ppl have time to get and finish a book

5. For the two ppl picking books per month, maybe try to have different books from each other each month so ppl have choices? And you can pick a book you've already read or haven't yet but it sounds good, it doesn't really matter. Just hopefully everyone can access it.

6. Pls try to label what ages you think the book would be and if it's idk scary or has death or something in any way for more sensitive readers? But try to without spoilers??

7. No limit/deadline for joining

8. I'm wondering if ppl are ok with poetry books too? I mean, I think definitely in-Verse and prose, but are you guys fine with just poetry collections? Just putting that out there.

Hope this was all clear enough and covered everything, thanks! And do you guys think a month is long enough? I'm not entirely sure what you guys' book speeds are and plus if you have busy schedules and lots of homework. I can read at least a book a day maybe(depending on schedule and hw) but idk you guys. We can switch to meet every two months if needed, or something else. Also, if everyone can't make the last day of a month, I think I'll just make the last seven days (or 5 days?) open for discussion/spoilers? Everyone pls correct me or tell me if I'm missing anything, thank you. And ACKK I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS IF PPL WANT TO DO IT!!

Oc you can join again! Glad to have you back! :) Also sorry for all those false promises, I was hoping they'd be true, but... yeah. Book progress still more or less the same. But Brown Girl Dreaming!! That's been on my need-to-read list for like forever!! Yay!! And hmm.. I don't think Sylver is active anymore... and it's their turn to pick.. I'm just gonna extend this month to Feb sorry bc of all this lag time or whatever it's called can't think rn... but anyways, if Sylver hasn't responded in a week, then it's your turn to pick (@Tsuki)!

Guys I wanna join the book club! I could probably find the books I am supposed to read at my local library. (Which is pretty much as big as a warehouse!!) So, I am pretty ready to commit myself to this book club!

@Hawkstar, thanks for telling us! And yeahh I still can't find lots of books cuz, as said before, the library I usually get books at is temporarily closed...

@Ayles C, I haven't seen you around for forever it feels like! Good to have you back (if I remember correctly, you drew a winged wolf for me? I have the screenshot on my phone)! :) And yay, glad to have you with us! Do you want to be added to the list to submit book requests? Let me know if you have any questions!

HI I kind of completely forgot this existed and I'm so sorry but I am back! I think January was me (?) and if I'm wrong you can ignore this but my pick is The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy by Anne Ursu. It is a feminist high fantasy about a girl who gets sent to a reformatory school and has to unravel a mystery about a monster. I just reread it so it's fresh in my mind to discuss when the time comes. (Also, Brown Girl Dreaming is amazing I wholeheartedly approve of that choice)

Hmm... @Lupine, good news and bad news?

Well, the good news is... you're on top of things. As in you have the right month. Yay, congrats! :D

Bad news is kinda funny in a sort of way... Troubled Girls was a November pick. So. And yes it's awesome and I still need to finish it ahhh. But also! Your month got moved to Feb bc I think it'll be better to have at least this round be a bit longer based on what's been happening so far to have a longer time to read the books? But anyone can totally veto me if they want!

If you can, it's be great if you and Sylver could pick a book for Feb still! In fact, @everyone, I just realized, you also can put in your book picks for your assigned month ahead of time if that makes things easier for you!

Anyways I'll return later with updated info thanks for reminding me... thank you again everyone! :)

LOL, that is funny. I saw that Endless_Parodies picked it based on something I said in another thread, so that makes me happy. My pick for February is Go With the Flow by Lily Williams and Laren Schneemann (I don't think it has been picked yet LOL). It's a feminist graphic novel about friendship.

Yayy, thank you @Lupine!! And everything about that book sounds great :0 :DD also, forgot to say, I started reading Dragomir even before Parody suggested it bc of you too, so tysm for the suggestion too!! :)

Alsoo, finally!!!

SPOILERS FOR DRAGOMIR AND PJO

Favorite character(s): I liked Katya a lot oddly. 1. Cat-ear buns 2. Awkward but not as quiet as she seems 3. Her name is awesome for reasons I can't describe. Just, so cute and cozy and comfy and warm and sounds like "cat" and totally fits her personality and doesn't sound like "Marya" at all (which is another name I love btw) though it should 4. The cover art of her is - and this sounds so weird - but is literally just, in my opinion, so cute!! :) oh, and Anton was cool too. I like goats. :)

Least favorite character(s): Elisabet. I'm sorry, I don't really remember much about here, which is kinda why I don't like her. And I wasn't too big a fan of Elana either for some reason... or, I've gotta say... Luka. I don't know why. I like his character. I really do. But my brain keeps telling me to put "Luka Luka Luka" and I seriously don't know why. I think it's bc his name's sorta related to Luke from PJO, who I seriously don't like XD

Character(s)/Situation(s) you can most relate to: Katya, other things

Favorite thing(s) about the book: the twists and the information plot and the cover and the names and the descriptions and just the whole concept of Dragomir Academy/worldbuilding and how the characters really get to speak out throughout, even if they're normally quiet

Least favorite thing(s) about the book: for some reason it felt a bit bland for a time, though I think it's prob bc I was getting back into reading it at the time. Also, it felt a bit predictable. Like, I didn't anticipate how we got to the end result and loved that, but also pretty much knew the end result from the start and which characters were good/bad. And sorry Lupine, but I didn't love Luka's character arc. It didn’t really feel, idk, like that much of a change/extreme to me?? But then again, might be because I was getting back into reading it again.

What did you think the book did well?: gradual reveal of info and making the readers really worry for the characters and making the characters make mistakes - I love love love that thing with the bell and when they came back down, DREAD - and the characters feelings about being troubled and stuff, plus the stuff I said in favorite things

What did you think the book could improve on? Already said.

First impression: LOVEEEEEE IT!!!!!!!!!!

1-10: 8.7?? May not be a fair judging though.

Other: thanks @Parody and @Lupine for recommending this book (I had actually first started it before Parody said bc of you Lupine XD, forgot to tell you. I'll move this up to the top actually)!!!! Sorry this took so long :/

Feiya says HOHXD. Hah, XD?

SPOILERS FOR DRAGOMIR

I loved Katya too! The cover art made her look kind of Asian, so that's how I pictured her and that might have made me like her more xD Elisabet really wasn't developed much as a character, but if there was a sequel (which I don't think there will be because of how it ended) it'd be interesting to see some of the secondary characters develop more. I also really want to know if Marya is a witch!! It was very unclear at the end, because she didn't exhibit any magical powers yet but she was still pretty young so they could manifest later. I think it's kind of cool that she didn't have any powers by the end, though. It kind of reverts the Super Powerful Chosen One stereotype. She was the protagonist because she was curious and intelligent, not because she was predestined or something.

It's true that Luka's switch was a little abrupt. If the book had been longer (which it absolutely could have been, some of those characters could have been developed so much more) it probably would have fleshed that arc out a little more.

I also really liked the mystery aspect. It didn't feel like a Sherlock Holmes-y type mystery where it's all fun and games and you're just looking for clues; everything tied into a bigger narrative that impacted the entire kingdom.

Also how it kept the action and figuring out info going toward the end and I got REALLY angry for a lot of characters and scenes and at the beginning cried, forgot to say :)
